History

Robert "Bob" Gilliland graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1949. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He has flown a variety of aircraft which includes the P-47 Thunderbolt, P-51 Mustang, F-84 Thunderjet, A-26 Invader, P-80 Shooting Star, F-104 Starfighter and more. In 1960, Bob joined Lockheed as a civilian test pilot flying the F-104. In 1962 he began to test pilot the A-11/A-12, and YF-12A. Bob was also chosen by C.L. Kelly Johnson (Head of Lockheed's Shunk Works) to be the Chief Test Pilot on the SR-71 Blackbird.

Using call sign "DUTCH 51", he made the first flight of the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird #17950 on December 22, 1964, taking the aircraft to Mach 1.5 and 50,000 feet altitude, and served as the principal test pilot. The first flight occurred in the prototype Blackbird referred to as "the Article" or "2001" as Kelly Johnson believed that no aircraft would exceed the Blackird's performance until well after the year 2000. Gilliland took off at 13:30 and landed at 14:26 with a total flight time of 56 minutes. Three F-104 chase planes participated in the first flight to assist as well as photograph the first flight of the Blackbird.

In August 1981, during the United States Sixth Fleet Freedom of Navigation exercises, Libyan fighter planes were assembled to fly patrols near the American ships. On August 19th (Gulf of Sidra Incident 1981) two Libyan Su-22 fighter-bombers were intercepted by two F-14 Tomcat fighters, "Fast Eagle 102" and "Fast Eagle 107" from the aircraft carrier Nimitz. During the engagement, one of the American planes was targeted by an air-to-air Atoll missile. After evading the missile, both Libyan planes were shot down with Sidewinder missiles launched by the Tomcats. The two Libyan pilots managed to eject and were rescued from the sea.
