2-PEOPLE and GROUP of PEOPLE (Board, comity…)

There are 3 sub-categories for people for Direct, Indirect, Reflexive Objects

Direct: you see her (her placed directly after the verb is the direct object)
Indirect: You are speaking TO her (her is the indirect object)
Reflexive: himself, herself, themselves.

However for these 3 subcategories, the first and the second persons are the same:

Me: me, m’
You: te, t’
Us: nous
You: vous

Examples:
I am talking to you: je te parle
You can see me: tu me vois
You are reading the book to us: tu nous lis un livre

3rd Person Direct Object:

him: le, l’
her: la, l’
them: les
Examples:
I invite them: je les invite
I see her: je la vois
I am calling him: je l’appelle

3rd Person Indirect Object:

Him, her: lui
Them: leur

Examples:
He is writing to them: il leur écrit
I am talking to her: je lui parle

3rd Person Reflexive Object:

Himself, herself, themselves: se, s’

Examples:
He kills himself: il se tue
He is sending the letters to himself: il s’envoie des lettres
He is washing his hands: il se lave les mains

I am sending the letter to Peter: I am sending it to him
J’envoie l’email à Pierre: je le lui envoie
J’envoie la fleur à Sophie: je la lui envoie

As you can see, the direct object is before the indirect one, however it only works with the 3r person, with the 1st and the 2nd it is the opposite:

Il m’envoie l’email: il me l’envoie
Il te lit le livre: il te le lit
Il s’envoie les lettres: il se les envoie

Chez:

Chez comes from a Latin word: Casa which means Home.

With Nouns:

Je vais chez Pierre: I am going to Pierre’s (home)
Je vais chez le docteur: I am going to the doctor’s (not his home but his office of course)
Je suis passé chez ma soeur: I dropped in on my sister
Elle a un sac de chez Vuitton: she has got a bag from Vuitton’s (Vuitton is the name of a person, so you can use “chez” in French)
For example with supermarkets:
I go to Morrisons: Je vais chez Morrisons (because Morrisons is the name of a person)
I go to Safeway: Je vais à Safeway (Safeway is a brand but not the name of a person)

With Pronouns:

Tu viens chez moi? Do you come to my place?
Oui, je viens chez toi: Yes, I come to your place
Fais comme chez toi: Make yourself at home
Chez nous, nous sommes 4: at home we are 4.

C’est mon chez moi: it is my home (better than c’est ma maison, because maison means home and house, chez moi means home)
C’est notre chez nous.
Tout le monde veut un chez soi: everybody wants a home. Chez soi is a general term.

Chez moi, chez toi, chez lui, chez elle, chez nous, chez vous, chez eux, chez elles.

For Countries and Regions:

Chez nous, au Canada, le français est différent: Here, in Canada, French language is different.

For People and Animals:

Chez les Français, c’est une habitude: for French people, it is an habit
Chez les lions, la femelle est plus petite: in lions, female is smaller.

Expression:

C’est nul de chez nul: it is completely rubbish

Modal verbs change the modality of your sentences.

A- Simple Tenses

1- Can, Could, May, Might:

We group these 4 verbs in French because they are related to one verb in French: Pouvoir

• Can (to be able to): I can= Je peux, You can= tu peux etc…
• May is also pouvoir: I may= Je peux; May I?= Puis-je?
  She may be watching television: Elle est peut-être en train de regarder la télévision
  To make is clearer in French, we add the word “maybe” = “peut-être”
  You can use the subjunctive mood: Il se peut qu’elle regarde la télé
  May can express the future: he may arrive late = Il arrivera peut-être en retard, il va peut-être arriver en retard or with the subjunctive mood: il se peut qu’il arrive en retard.
• Might= Peut-être or Could so the conditional form of Pouvoir:
  He might be right: il a peut-être raison
  I could come if…: je pourrais venir si…

2 – Must, Should:

• Must: Devoir, Falloir
  Devoir: je dois, tu dois, il doit, nous devons, vous devez, ils doivent
  Falloir: il faut (just one form)
  You must go = tu dois y aller or il faut que tu y ailles
  He must be wrong: il doit se tromper
• Should: the conditional form of the verb Devoir
  Je devrais, tu devrais, il devrait, nous devrions, vous devriez, ils devraient
  I should go: je devrais y aller

B – Compound Tenses:

1-  Can, Could, May, Might

You need to know the past participle of pouvoir: pu
The modal verbs act like auxiliary verbs in English, not in French

He could have come but: il aurait pu venir (as you can see, could becomes the past participle and have the auxiliary verb)
She can’t have seen you: Elle n’a pas pu te voir
I may have forgotten it: J’ai pu l’oublier or je l’ai peut-être oublié
You might have told me: tu aurais pu me dire

2- Should:

You need to know the past participle of devoir: dû

He should have come: Il aurait dû venir
You should have been a doctore: tu aurais dû être docteur

3- Exercises:

a-It may rain later
b-I may not have time to do it
c-I might not go
d-It might rain this afternoon
e-He should go to a doctor
f-He should have got there by now
g-He must have left
h-He might have left
i-He could have left
j-He should have left

Answers:

a-Il pleuvra peut-être plus tard, il va peut-être pleuvoir plus tard, il se peut qu’il pleuve plus tard
b-Je n’aurai (future) peut-être pas le le temps de le faire , je ne vais peut-être pas avoir le temps, il se peut que je n’aie pas le temps de la faire
c-Je pourrais (conditional) peut-être ne pas y aller, il se pourrait que je n’y aille pas
d- il se pourrait qu’il pleuve cet après-midi, il pourrait peut-être pleuvoir…
e- il devrait aller chez le docteur
f- Il devrait y être maintenant
g- il a du partir, however because the verb partir needs the auxiliary verb “to be” you can also say: il doit être parti, il faut qu’il soit parti
h- il aurait peut-être pu partir; peut-être qu’il aurait pu partir
i-  Il aurait pu partir
j- Il aurait dû partir or because of to be: Il devrait être parti

As you can see, many possibilities, try to focus on the crossing verbs rule first.

Present Perfect Continuous or Progressive in French:

You know that in English, we use this tense to speak about continuous facts or activities which have started in the past and either are continuing in the present or have just ended.
In French, we do not have such a tense, to translate the Present Perfect Continuous we need 2 tenses.

1- Present Perfect Continuous in French: le Passé Composé

the Passé Composé is only for things in the past, so if you want to translate “I have been working all day”, first you need to express if you are still working or not.

You have stopped: J’ai travaillé toute la journée
You are still working: J’ai travaillé toute la journée et ça continue (you need to make clear that you are still working)

It has been snowing all week:
It has stopped: Il a neigé toute la semaine
It is still snowing: Il a neigé toute la semaine et ça continue

2- Present Perfect Continuous in sentences with “for” or “since”: le Présent

It has been snowing since Monday: Il neige depuis lundi

It has been snowing for 5 days:

1. Il neige depuis 5 jours
2. ça fait 5 jours qu’il neige
3. Il y a 5 jours qu’il neige

I have been learning French since 2001: j’apprends le français depuis 2001


I have been learning French for 9 years:

1. J’apprends le français depuis 9 ans
2. ça fait 9 ans que j’apprends le français
3. Il y a 9 ans que j’apprends le français

I have been working since 8am: je travaille depuis 8 heures ce matin

I have been working for 8 hours:

1. ça fait 8 heures que je travaille
2. il y a 8 heures que je travaille
3. we do not say je travaille depuis 8 heures, it is too confusing, see the video.

Il y a can be the translation of “there is” and “there are”, also about duration “ago” and “for” and the translation of “how far” in French.

1 There is, There are:

There is a cat on the table: Il y a un chat sur la table (we say: ya un chat sur la table)
There are 2 books in my bag:  Il y a 2 livres dans mon sac (ya 2 livres…)

NO PLURAL FORM FOR IL Y A!

-Negative form:

There si no cat: Il n’y a pas de chat (we need “de” before the noun for singular sentence, but il n’y a pas trois chats)

-Question form:

Is there a cat on the table? Y a-t-il un chat sur la table ( a “t” for the pronunciation) or
Est-ce qu’il y a un chat sur la table?

How many books are there in your bag: Combien de livres y a-t-il dans votre sac? or Combien y a-t-il de livres dans votre sac?

Expressions using il y a:

There are 12 months in one year: il y a 12 mois dans une année
What’s up, what’s wrong: qu’est-ce qu’il y a?
I am not happy: Il y a que je ne suis pas content
You are not the only one: il n’y a pas que toi
Some people go too far: il y en a qui exagèrent
Just tell him: il n’y a qu’à lui dire
There is a storm brewing: Il y a de l’orage dans l’air.

The shop opened 2 years ago: le magasin a ouvert il y a 2 ans or il y a 2 ans que le magasin a ouvert.
I got back 10 minutes ago: je suis arrivé il y a 10 minutes or il y a 10 minutes que je suis arrivé.

For

I have not seen him for a long time: il y a longtemps que je ne l’ai pas vu
I have been living here for 10 years: il y a 10 ans que j’habite or que je vis ici.

3 -Distance: How Far:

How far is it from Paris to Lyon? Il y a combien de km de Paris à Lyon?
It is about 400 km: Il y a environ 400 km.
How far is it from here to your home? Il y a combien d’ici à chez toi?
It is 2 km: Il y a 2 km.

Vamos a ver los dos futuros: el futuro próximo y el tiempo futuro.

1- Futuro Próximo:

Para decir “voy a comer” en Francés, es el futuro próximo.
Se usa como en español el verbo ir y el infinitivo del verbo siguiente.

• Voy a comer: je vais manger
• Vas a comer: tu vas manger
• Va a comer: il va manger
• Vamos a comer: nous allons manger
• Vais a comer: vous allez manger
• Van a comer: ils vont manger

2- el Futuro:


En francés como en español, se necesita como raiz el infinitivo del verbo (hasta la ultima “r”) mas la terminación del futuro que es el verbo haber:

asi que comer es manger:

• comeré: je mangerai
• comeras: tu mangeras
• comera: il mangera
• comeremos: nous mangerons
• comereis: vous mangerez
• comerán: ils mangeront

Con tomar o prendre en francés, se usa todas las letras hasta la r final:

• je prendrai
• tu prendras

Despues de la palabra si condicional en francés se usa el imperfecto modo indicativo y no el subjuntivo como en español:

Si viniera contigo, tomaría un abrigo:  si je venais avec toi, je prendrais un manteau

French Past Subjunctive: Video Link

1- When to use it: For the same reasons as the ones seen in the lesson about present subjunctive, when the first part of the sentence (the part before “que”) expresses a will, a wish, an obligation or a doubt.

2- It looks like the “Passé Composé”, because it needs an auxiliary verb following with a past participle, the difference is that the auxiliary verb is in subjunctive mood, so you need to know the subjunctive forms of the two auxiliary verbs in French: avoir and être.

Passé Composé: Tu es venu (you came or you have come)
Subjonctif Passé: Que tu sois venu
Passé Composé: Il a mangé
Subjonctif Passé: Qu’il ait mangé


3- Why do we need this tense?

the structure of the sentence is like this: First Part QUE Second Part
If the first part and the second part take place at the same time, we use the present subjunctive to translate the second part.
If the second part takes place before the first one, we use the past subjunctive to translate it.

4- Examples:

I am afraid he is coming: j’ai peur qu’il vienne (present)
I am afraid he came: j’ai peur qu’il soit venu (past)
I was afraid that he came: j’ai eu peur qu’il vienne (present)
Iwas afraid he had come: j’ai eu peur qu’il soit venu (past)

I am happy that he is leaving: Je suis heureux qu’il parte
I am happy he left: je suis heureux qu’il soit parti
I was happy he left: J’étais heureux qu’il parte
I was happy he had left: j’étais heureux qu’il soit parti

There are some rules to know to better your pronunciation in Spanish:

1. Spanish words ending with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u, y):
The accent or stress is on the next to last syllable.
Example:
- Turista (tourist), pronunciation: tuRISta
- Mano (hand), MAno
- Botella (bottle), boTElla

2. Words ending with a “s” or a “n”:
Same rule, the accent is on the next to last syllable:
Example:
- Joven (young), JOven
- Turistas (plural), tuRIStas


3. Words ending with a consonant (except “n” and “s”, to remember these letters you can say N S for No Stress)
The accent is on the last syllable:
Example:
- Arroz (rice), arROZ

4. All the other words have a written accent with the sign ” ´ ”

- Estación (station), all the words en ción have the accent on the last syllable, estaCION
