A. Unlike beeswax, soy wax doesn’t have a powerful fragrance of its own, so it is a better “blank” base for all fragrances and essential oils.  You can also buy soy wax candles in lots of colours and shapes.

Q. Soy wax is described as having a “wonderful scent throw”.  What does this mean?

A. This means that scented soy wax candles fill the room with a strong, lasting fragrance.  Candles made from soy are also natural and clean burning and have a purer fragrance than say paraffin wax candles, which contain added chemicals and have been known to give people headaches.

Q. Paraffin wax scented candles are so much cheaper than soy wax scented candles – why should I pay more for soy?

A. In a nutshell, the atmospheric and sensual benefit of scented soy candles is far greater than any other type of candle.  To start with, they are made from a natural base that doesn’t conflict with the fragrance.  By comparison, paraffin wax scented candles are derived from petrol, which blots out the fragrance just an hour after lighting the candle.  Soy wax candles also last 50% longer than paraffin wax candles.  So, if you’re looking for a quality, long lasting candle with a great fragrance, soy candles are the best choice.

 Q. I have heard that inhaling the fumes from paraffin wax candles is just as bad for your health as breathing second hand cigarette smoke.  Is this true? 

A. Nothing has been proven on the health front, but it is true that the smoke from paraffin wax candles contains 11 toxins, two of which are carcinogenic.  Soy wax candles, by comparison, don’t produce any toxins – so you can be assured you are not breathing toxins as you relax in your candlelit bath. 

Q. But surely any candle that contains essential oils will have a positive effect on my health and wellbeing?

A.   Not if it contains paraffin wax.  Aside from the toxins, paraffin wax candles produce soot, which pollutes the air you breathe and leaves nasty black smears on walls and furnishings.  It’s true that essential oils have therapeutic effects, but using a paraffin candle as the carrier is a contradiction.  If you are going to pay a premium for aromatherapy candles and wish to enjoy the benefits, choose candles made from 100% natural products.

Melting fragrance melts or a wax tart in a tart warmer is a wonderful way to add fragrance to your surroundings. A Fragrance melt is made by adding fragrance oil to wax. At Essential Pleasures we have over 400 fragrances to choose from and use special waxes for maximum fragrance throw.

A tart warmer is designed to melt the wax tart at the correct temperature to release the fragrance. The amount of fragrance released is determined by the size of the wax pool. The wax used for making wax tarts is selected for its fragrance throw and it s ability to not stick to the container for easy cleanup and change-out. A large number of tart warmers Essential Pleasures carries a large variety of warmers, both tea light and electric come with separate bowls. The bowl, if used with the right kind of fragrance melt wax can be cleaned by placing the cooled bowl in a freezer for a few minutes. The frozen wax will pop right out of the bowl leaving it clean and ready for the next use. When a fragrance melt is used in an electric tart warmer, you end up with a strong fragrance similar to burning a candle without the flame. As mentioned above, Fragrance melts have the advantage of easily changing fragrances by placing the cooled bowl or entire warmer in the case of a one piece in a freezer for a few minutes to pop out the wax and reuse. In addition the popped out wax can be saved in a plastic baggy for future use.

The color of fragrance melt has nothing to do with the fragrance or amount of fragrance in a fragrance melt. Most fragrances are colorless or amber in color. Color is added to the wax at the time fragrance is added to make the melts similar to the fragrance they represent. If no color is added the melts would end up an off-white or amber color.
We carefully measure and add the same amount of fragrance to every melt to insure consistent quality. The amount of fragrance throw is mostly dependent on the fragrance chosen. Not all fragrances have the same throw. Different individuals have different tastes in fragrances. We are often asked what our favorite fragrance is. Our favorite fragrance is not always our best selling fragrance. Some individuals like a musk scent while others enjoy a flower smell. Some prefer a baked goods fragrance while others choose a fruity smell. For example, we offer a peach fragrance that I swear smells like you just bit into a fresh peach. We sell a carrot cake fragrance that smells like a carrot cake baking in the oven. One of our customers told us once that she was melting carrot cake in her warmer when her son stopped by for a visit. The son stayed and sat for a while finally he turned to her and asked when the cake would be finished baking. He honestly thought she had a carrot cake in the oven. We also have a fragrance called pikaki, which smells just like a Hawaiian Lai.

We offer our fragrance melts in three different sizes, a heart shaped melt, a tart shaped melts, which we call single melts and a breakaway bar that can be separated into six pieces. . For larger tart warmers we recommend using two heart shaped melts or one single melt which is equal to two heart melts. The fragrance throw is dependent on the fragrance and the size of the wax pool the wax should not be heated to a temperature over 180 degrees. As with any wax product do not leave wax melting unattended and keep out of the reach of children and pets.

What we call scent is made up of essential oils. These are volatile oils that evaporate in the air when they are warmed or exposed to sunlight. The tiny molecules of these essential oils fit into receptors in our nostrils. When they do that we smell fresh flowers, baking bread, pine trees, or whatever.

Essential oils like that make us feel good. They make us think if good things to eat or happy times on holiday. They lift our mood and make us think positive thoughts. This is the principle involved in aromatherapy and in perfume making.

Scents can also make us feel bad too. Some scents are intended to warn us that food has gone off and is not safe to eat. Other scents of which we are not aware, such as sex pheremones, have a powerful effect without us knowing anything about it. They attract us to our sexual partners. Babies recognize their mothers by their smell. There really is good chemistry between us and those we love.

Scent plays an enormous and usually unremarked part in our lives. Being surrounded all day by the scent of car fumes and chemicals, stressed and angry people can have a very negative effect on our psychological state. We need to consciously seek out good scents to lift out more and make us feel good. That is what perfume is all about.

In Medieval Europe people used to carry an orange stuck with garlic cloves or a pomander to counteract the bad smells that were all around them. We can do the same thing in a slightly more scientific way today.

You could just go to a store and buy some perfume. But making your own perfume out of natural scents will give you a greater understanding of how scents effect your mood and provide a lot of pleasure in the process. Scent has a powerful psychological effect. Using that effect is all part of the perfumier’s art.

Take a few simple ingredients that you might already have at home – a vanilla pod for example. Cut it up and smell it. Your mood is lighter immediately. Vanilla is a seductive scent that is very attractive and yet warm and comforting at the same time. There is nothing dangerous in this scent.

How can we use the scent of our vanilla pod in perfume? The task in creating a perfume is to capture that fresh scent before it dissipates into the air. It seems almost impossible, but it is perfectly possible.

What you need to do is to put the cut up vanilla pod in a glass jar with a lid. Add some sugar. A third of a teaspoonful should be enought. Then cover it in vodka. Close the lid and shake it. Leave it for as long you like. A month would be about right. When you open the jar you will smell your fresh vanilla scent again. You can add a few drops of this vanilla scent to all kinds of perfumes.

You can do the same thing with lavender, rose petals or other scented flowers. Herbs and spices can also be treated in the same way. If you are gathering fresh vegetable material try to do it at mid day when they are dry and their volatile oils are most concentrated.

You can dilute the scented alcohol with water to use as a perfume or add it to a carrier oil to use as body rub. All you need are a few drops if you use it without dilution. It can be used to perfume a room as well as you. A few drops of lavender added to beeswax makes a wonderful scented furniture polish that doubles as a room freshener.
