Alien Abduction – A tribute to the classic arcade shooter game Defender and inspired by Mutant Storm, this game is a sure hit with shoot-em-up game fans. It features three game modes – points battle, time attack and sharp shooter. The game offers 30 levels, three missions, two-player action, powerups, unlockable goodies and addictive gameplay.

Angband – This game lets you explore deep dungeons, fight monsters, and acquire weapons for your final confrontation against the game’s boos – Morgoth, the Lord of Darkness. It features three game modes, 30 levels spread over three missions, two player action, powerups, tactical depth, unlockable items, and more importantly addictive gameplay.

Argonaut – Who wouldn’t want to play the classic asteroids game on the Mac? This game offers the same excitement of blasting asteroids through your Argo spacecraft firing missiles, bombs, and other such weaponry.

Armagetron – This is a multiplayer, old school arcade game set in 3D arena reminiscent of Tron. It features a customizable playing arena, great graphics and AI bots.

Armand and the Foppish Hat – This short adventure game was patterned after the classic ZELDA games. The game is about a swashbuckler named Armand in his quest to track down the thief who stole his hat.

Battle for Wesnoth – This is a turn-based fantasy strategy game, which lets you build armies of humans, elves, orcs, trolls, dwarves and other races. It features various adventures and an overall game mission to reclaim the throne of Wesnoth.

Bullfrog – You play a bullfrog trying to save your home, which was infested by bugs. How do you this task? By eating them of course. The game features that addictive classic arcade gameplay, six unique bugs, unlimited rounds, and laptop friendly controls.

BZFlag – This is an online multiplayer cross-platform 3D tank battle game.

Chopper – This is a side-scrolling helicopter game featuring 72 missions and three difficulty levels. The game features beautiful landscapes, realistic weather and impressive explosions.

Crack Attack – Another Tetris-inspired game, this version for the Mac features sound, full-screen mode, some native Cocoa interfaces, one or two players, and automatic version checks.

Enigma – This puzzle game has you uncover pairs of identically colored Oxyd stones amidst hidden traps, vast mazes, and laser beams.

Foobillard – Although originally developed for the Linux platform, this game is equally stunning on Mac’s OS X. It features realistic physics, AI players, and various game types including pool, snooker, and more.

Freeciv – This is a free and open source empire-building strategy game, which is obviously inspired by Civilization. The game sets you on a quest to lead your tribe from the prehistoric ages to the space age. Sounds cool, right?

Frozen Bubble – This is the classic bubble game ported for the Mac OS X.

Glider Pro – This game is one of the most popular pre-OS X games. It combines the elements of puzzle and strategy games as you fly your paper airplane through a house, trying to avoid candles, and air drifts.

Ivory – Want to play Mahjong on your Mac? This game is your best bet. This is a solitaire tile matching game.

LinCity-NG – This is a city simulation game and an improved version of the earlier classic LinCity game. This game features a new ISO-3D graphics engine and a completely redone and modern GUI.

Lugaroo – Featuring a unique combat system, Lugaroo is a third-person action game in which you play a rebel bunny rabbit on a quest to fight the corrupt leader of Rabbit Republic and so on. Lugaru’s moves are basically logical and context sensitive.

Marble Arena – A free version of Marble Blast, this game lets you control your marble around 3D levels with slippery slopes, air vents, jump-pads, and vortexes.

Mineswept – This is basically a clone of Windows’ minesweeper with the following special features: one can create a custom minefield, highlight the neighbors of a square, show a safe square for the first move, and track the best time.

Nexuiz – This is a 3D deathmatch first-person shooter game featuring multiple weapons and game modes, including team deathmatch, capture the flag and domination. Graphics-wise, this game is simply awesome. Follow the link and see for yourself.

Oberin – Another fantasy-inspired MMORPG made specifically for the Mac, this game takes place in a persistent, ever evolving world. It includes several quests and a virtual community, allowing you to explore, interact, join dragon hunts, go fishing, play a game of chess with a friend or simply refine your skills.

Ogame – This is a strategic space simulation game featuring thousands of players worldwide competing online.

Oolite – This is a pretty straight-forward space simulation game inspired by Elite, and powered by Objective-C and OpenG. This simple game is easy to pick up, modify and expand upon. It’s a space simulation game featuring a retro feel and modern technology. You can fly from one planet to another, buy and sell goods, shoot pirates or be the pirate yourself.

Oops! – This classic board game of skill, cunning and regret pits you against three computer opponents or up to three people via network play. It built-in multiplayer chat, and a customizable taunting mechanism.

OpenLieroX – Based on the famous LieroX 2D shooter game, this unofficial sequel features online play, customizable weapons, levels and characters. The game features a deathmatch setting where players battle armed with five selected weapons. Players can move in any direction using a Ninja rope. Is Apple about to launch all-you-can-watch monthly iTunes subscriptions?

Interesting murmurs are emanating from Cupertino this week about Apple’s alleged plans to offer an all-you-can-watch television buffet for the princely sum of $30 a month. It’s about time. The days of the public buying a single song or downloading a single show for $2.99 are waning; they’d prefer to buy digital media the way they buy pens or Twizzlers from Staples, in bulk. With savvy senior citizens figuring out how to illegally download movies and music, it can be said with some confidence that iTunes has served for many as the “training wheels” for illegal Bit Torrent downloads. (It’s not a great leap — first step: download stuff from iTunes; a year later: download the same stuff for free). This alleged reasonably-priced Apple service would probably keep these folks within the paying fold. Why? Because the price is right and it’s convenient, and for no other reason.

2009 is the year when many cable customers (I’m one of them) cut the wire for good. With it being so easy to get the things they want for free online, why should consumers be obliged to spend $90 a month for 500 channels, 490 of them that are never, ever watched? Paying just $30 for the things you do want to watch is a no-brainer. You won’t need the DVR either, saving you an additional $12 a month.

And then there is what could be called the “Hulu problem” which should theoretically make this service more attractive for the networks (although it might take a while to get them there): Hulu execs make a big deal about selling out the advertising inventory for Hulu, but as CBS’s outgoing digital CEO Quincy Smith stated bluntly to All Things D, “You and I can say all day long, ‘We’re sold out on Web video. That’s going really well. It’s sold out.’ Well, no kidding, it’s sold out. It’s a $700-million market. The television market is $120 billion. And of that, $700 million, half of those [ad buyers] are spending 90% of their time doing Google keywords, not buying online video.”

There is a reason why Smith’s intelligence is valued at CBS (which is likely to become a client at his new digital consulting firm), and his pointed summation of where the marketplace is right now demonstrates this handily: “I don’t hate Hulu. Hulu’s world-class video viewing. What I don’t understand is, why license all that content to something that works that well, that seamlessly, yet – without the economic model around it?”

Clearly, Apple’s alleged plans would be a boon to the bottom line of the networks and turn the iTunes store into a pseudo cable and satellite TV operator. The spanner in the works, of course, is likely to be the cable and satellite carriers, which will have a lot to lose with this new equation. Serves ‘em right for charging me all those years for sports channels I never watched.

GIMPshop is the open source equivalent to Adobe Photoshop for Mac. Considering the price of Photoshop  ($999), many of you will find GIMPshop an incredible asset to your graphics warehouse of apps.

Installing GIMPshop is a delight, it comes in at a small download of 85MB, compared to 225MB for Adobe Photoshop. After installation GIMPshop took only 195MB compared to Photoshops 485

The original purpose for GIMPshop was to make the Gimp accessible to the many Adobe Photoshop users out there. GIMPshop is a hacked version of the GIMP by Scott Moschella called in which Scott has renamed and reorganized GIMP’s tools, options,windows, and menus to closely resemble Adobe Photoshop’s menu structure and naming conventions. Many of the menu options and even whole menus were recreated to faithfully reproduce a Photoshop-like experience.

If you’ve never used Photoshop before, you may not appreciate the GIMPshop hack, but you’ll like that it follows the long term research that has gone into Photoshops user interface. Items are just in logical places for the most part.

Longtime Photoshop users should feel very comfortable using GIMPshop.

GIMPshop is by no means a 1-to-1 copy of Photoshop and you may find some menu items that are not in perfect order. But GIMPshop’s pretty close, and I think it does the job. I’m getting lots of use out of it and I hope you do too.

Is it finally time to ditch Photoshop and go open source? Almost.

So Dave over at MacNutsAndBolts.com asked me how many FTP clients were out there for the Mac. I thought there were maybe 4 or 5, Dave thought there more. So I headed out on an expedition to find out just how many FTP clients there were. I was amazed at what I found.

To set some standards I decided that a basic FTP client should at a minimum support FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and should have managerial features like FTP bookmarks, and be able to easily edit file permissions on a remote server. These are the basic things any FTP user would use in a normal day.

So I found not just 4 or 5, but 11 Mac FTP Clients that would handle any users everyday use. Some better than others, but nevertheless there are 11 Mac FTP Clients out there that met my criteria.

Now just so I don’t go around repeating the same thing over and over again, I’m going to use a legend to denote features present in the app.

• A – Basic FTP, including SFTP and SSH and also includes things like bookmarks and drag-and-drop support
• A+ – Basic FTP as well as Amazon S3 and iDisk support
• E – Edit remote files using local clients such as BBEdit and TextMate
• S – AppleScript support

Transmit

(Supports A+, E, S)
The old bus chugs along, but it chugs along just fine. Nearing the end of its life cycle, Transmit from Panic is still a favourite among many. Why? Because it’s got everything! Amazon S3, iDisk, Syncing favourites across Macs, live edit, and a whole lot more. The user interface is fluid and fast, so your Mac isn’t bogged down by animations.

The only thing that looks dated is the user interface, which has carried over its look from Panther (Transmit 3 was released in ‘05). Transmit 4 is just round the corner, so watch out for this one taking off in a few. If you want a full featured FTP client, Transmit is as good as it gets.

Flow

(Supports A+, E)
Without a doubt, the best looking FTP client I’ve seen on the Mac (which effectively means on any platform). ExtendMac has definitely paid a lot of attention while designing Flow. As an FTP manager it’s got all the features required, while leaving you with a fluid interface. You can store bookmarks of your favourite locations in the sidebar, get a good view of your transfers in the downloads window, and zip through folders with some stunning core animation effects. It’s even got Quick Look support and a neat feature called ‘droplets’ which allows you to quickly upload files to specific locations without opening the Flow interface. For instance, I could easily drop in podcast episodes to our FTP server without bothering about connecting, navigating, etc.

Flow also has a built in editor that will allow you to edit any file within the application, including code syntax colouring, tabs, and previews. You can also open the file in an external editor and have it synced over to the server if you want.

The only thing that’s stopping me from giving this the No. 1 award, is the crashes. Flow has been unstable right from the time it was launched as a beta, and the developers have still not managed to get it on its feet. Costs $29 for a license, and is well worth it if it stays stable during your trial run.

Filezilla

(Supports A)
The Open Source contribution from the Mozilla Corp., FileZilla is your average ‘do it all’ ugly FTP client. It’s got support for all the FTP protocols (not Amazon or iDisk though). It’s also got bookmarks and a few other features that make it possible to use this as your FTP client. But why would you!

It’s a cross platform ultra ugly FTP client. Look at the toolbar buttons for instance. Tiny as they are, they’ve got black borders around them! Throughout the UI you can feel the Linux-ness, complete with altered folder icons, bad spacing and typography. If it’s free you’re looking for, there’s a far better client out there, and it’s called Cyberduck.

Fetch

(Supports A, E, S)
If minimalism is your kind of thing, Fetch will appeal to you. The window can be as large as you want it, but it’s built to be small and manageable. It does this partly by using smaller fonts, and ridding itself of the second pane (requiring you to use a Finder window to transfer to and fro). It doesn’t weigh in a lot on the features side of things, omitting any support for Amazon S3, iDisk, nor does it have any of the ‘cool’ features we used to with other FTP software. I do like the cute running-dog animation that pops up whenever it’s ‘fetching’ something (get it?!).

As for recommending it, I’d say there’s far better FTP clients on the Mac market, that you should settle for something that’s stripped of most features. At $25 a piece, Fetch isn’t attractive on the price front either.

CyberDuck

(Supports A+, E, S)
Everyone’s favourite free FTP client, Cyberduck is also one of the most powerful clients on the Mac. It supports almost all of the features requred without compromising on quality. The user interface is decent (not bad, but not wow), and using it couldn’t be easier. You can do quick one-time connections or save FTP locations as bookmarks. Cyberduck also has History and integrates well with the system with Quick look, Keychain, Growl, and support for external editors. It’s also the only client to support Mosso Cloud Files (which is we host our podcast episodes and other large files).

From a user point of view, I don’t know why you wouldn’t use Cyberduck as your preferred client. Oh, and it’s free and open source.

Interarchy

(Supports A+, E, S)
Designed to be used by network and server admins, Interarchy is an interesting twist to the FTP game. The user interface is pleasant, featuring tabs at the top so you can switch between connections. You can also drag and drop between tabs. In addition to FTP, Amazon S3, WebDAV and such, Interarchy can also connect to an HTTP location. I entered our web url in the field, and it listed out the entire directory structure of our site (PHP rendered) so I could effectively browse through different ‘posts’ and download images if I chose to. I didn’t try these, but Interarchy is said to have some good site mirroring support, transferring files across servers, and even mounting an FTP location on your desktop.

Interarchy is also very well settled into the Mac OS environment, with support for AppleScript, Growl, Bonjour, Spotlight (no support for Quick Look though). However, at $60 for a single license, it kind of goes way past the standard.

Yummy

(Supports A, E, S)
Another favourite among Mac users, Yummy features a very simple and clean approach to FTP. Once you’re connected, all you get is two panes, and a status bar at the bottom. In addition to the standard list view, you can also view either pane in Column view, which is great for navigating around different folders.

That is however the extent to which Yummy goes, as it does not feature iDisk or Amazon S3, neither does it have any features like Quick Look (it does have quick look support though). The user interface is also bland (and for some reason the fonts look non-standard). At $25, it’s a good client, but not good enough I’m afraid.

Hybrid FTP clients

In this age of convergence, doing one thing is not enough. To have one application do more than one thing is definitely more appealing than littering your Dock with one for each. Of course, as it goes, the hybrid clients usually don’t feature every feature you would expect in a dedicated client, but they get the job done.

Espresso

(Supports A+)
I’ve only used Espresso for a while now, but it’s got one of the better FTP managers while working with your web documents. It won’t replace a dedicated FTP client in terms of functionality, but its merge/update/replace features are very powerful especially if you’re working with lots of files in different places. Espresso is also a very good HTML editor, loved by many.

Costs $80 for a license, it’s for serious use only. You can check out our video review of Espresso to know how it all works out.

Coda

(Supports A, E)
My personal favourite Mac app, Coda from Panic includes everything you would require in a web development tool, in one single window. With a simple workflow to organise your ‘sites’, to accessing local and remote files while working with your documents, Coda does it all. If you look at its FTP tool itself, I would say it’s way underpowered. You can’t get a good idea of your transfers, drag and drop support is limited, and it doesn’t give you a lot of file info.

When it comes to the web workflow however, Coda’s manager is just perfect. Double click a file to open it up in a tabbed window. You can also easily tell between local and remote files, which is really handy. At $100 for a license, it’s not a cheap client, but it’s got everything you need.

Forklift

(Supports A+, E)
This finder replacement includes a powerful FTP manager right within the main interface. You can connect to FTP, SFTP, Amazon S3, iDisk, Bluetooth, you name it! The fact that the servers mount right in your sidebar means you can easily transfer local files to remote servers as if they were part of the system.

Forklift is also a very nifty Finder replacement featuring an uninstaller, tabbed browsing, and some other features. Check out our review of Forklift, or download a trial. It costs $45 for a license, and it’s got a lot more than FTP under the hood.

Speed Download

(Supports A+)
The download manager of choice, Speed download now includes an FTP manager for connecting to remote servers. It’s a fairly capable FTP client, adding iDisk support to the boot (no Amazon S3 though). Servers are listed out in your sidebar from there you can download or upload files with ease. The FTP mode splits into two panes, with remote and local files showing at the same time. Navigation is easy with the list view coupled with the path bar.

Don’t forget that Speed Download is also a fully featured download manager for all your web files. It integrates with Safari and Firefox allowing you seamless 100% resumable downloads. At $25, there’s a lot of value for money especially if you have good use for both the main features.

So there you go, 11 Mac FT Clients for you to check out. I hope you find the one that suites your specific needs. Two FTP clients I didn’t mention here are, 1. the one that is built into Adobe Dreamweaver which I use everyday; 2. the FTP Manager built into cPanel (a web hosting control panel) that is web based and also comes with a WISIWYG editor built in.
