My first encounter with the city of Manila greeted me like a good Filipino friend should; that is, loud and lovingly. Warm and tropical almost year-round, Manila is a teeming mass of life from landing to take-off, as all the sights, sounds and smells flood your senses immediately upon arrival. It’s no wonder that Manila is a top contender for the title of “Pearl of the Orient”.

To compliment the seemingly chaotic backdrop, try indulging in the cities’ finer sides of life, including award-winning kitchens, 5-star hotels and a vast array of entertainment options. My idea of a perfect vacation to the Philippines would have me landing on a Friday morning into Manila, with a full weekend here to enjoy the pulsing beat of the city’s restaurant and nightlife scene. After the partying subsides, this would be followed by taking off to one of their many amazing oceanside destinations.

With a welcoming staff, the menu is full of 20+ different set dining menus, complete from start to finish.

Corner Tree Cafe - For those seeking more healthy, animal-friendly options, be sure to stop by Corner Tree Cafe, tucked away on a quiet corner of Jupiter Street in Bel-Air, Makati. Truly the talk of the town in the vegan world, the cafe has expanded its clientele with a consistently creative menu that changes seasonally, allowing the establishment to continue being fresh and “new”.

Opus Restaurant & Lounge - Located in the Resorts World complex, Opus Restaurant and Lounge features an award-winning menu by day, and one of the best nightlife scenes in Manila by night. It’s about… TIME! Time in Manila has quickly become one of the hottest dance spots in the region, with world-class resident DJs and frequent guest DJs from around the globe. Intramuros - For a piece of “Old Manila”, head down to Intramus, the oldest area of the capital. Famous for its Spanish architecture, beautiful old colonial homes and for Fort Santiago, Intramuros literally means ‘within the walls’.

The Baywalk - The Baywalk is a two-kilometer stretch of waterfront, with a long promenade where you can sit and enjoy the view. The perfect way to take in the city, The Baywalk offers stunning views morning or night. It’s the perfect place to grab that romantic someone and enjoy the beautiful Manila sunset, as you sip on fresh coconut juice at one of the beautiful waterfront restaurants.

Amanpulo Resort - Stray slightly from the big city of Manila and hop on a chartered jet to the remote island resort of Amanpulo. The name appropriately derives from the Sanskrit word for peace, aman, combined with the local Tagolog word for island. yardbird – Opened by a group of young, passionate restaurateurs from Canada, yardbird has taken the Hong Kong restaurant scene by storm. Offering a delicious menu centred on their award-winning chicken yakitori, the yardbird kitchen promises to deliver mouth-watering dishes. Along with their signature chicken, make sure to try the KFC (Korean Fried Cauliflower) and the Brussels sprouts fried with garlic.

Ming Court – If you’re looking for more traditional Chinese fare, make sure to visit the award-winning Ming Court in Langham Place Hotel in Kowloon. If their extensive 16-page menu seems a little daunting, go with the tasting menu, a walk-through of some of the best from the kitchen.

Drink

Lily & Bloom – Situated six floors above the teeming masses of Lan Kwai Fong, Lily & Bloom offers a look-back at early 20th-Century glam. Don’t expect any molecular mixes or fruity fusions as this place sticks to the classics. It also has an equally impressive food menu available until 3am.

Quinary – This newly opened drinking den is located on Hollywood Road between the bar districts of Lan Kwai Fong and Soho, making it a great stopping point to sit and enjoy one of the expertly mixed drinks.

sky100 - Enjoy a drink at the world’s highest bar along with an unmatched view of the bustle of Hong Kong, Kowloon and the surrounding New Territories. Make sure to call ahead for availability.

Dance

Fly – With a great mixed crowd, bumping DJs and some of the friendliest staff in the city, Fly club offers patrons a look into the Hong Kong club scene without any snobbish membership or outrageous cover charge. Drinks are reasonably priced and themed parties happen throughout the week.

Dragon-i – Voted both as one of Hong Kong’s favourite nightspots and one of the most overrated, Dragon-i is a club to see and be seen. Rub shoulders with international models and local celebrities as you jive to the latest club anthems, expertly mixed by their world-class DJs.

Drop – Listed as one of Gwyneth Paltrow’s favourite nightspots in Hong Kong, Drop is the quintessential Hong Kong club. Located in a basement at the end of a seemingly empty alleyway, Drop promises a crowd of gorgeous party-goers, looking for a good beat and a great vibe.

Victoria Harbour via the Star Ferry – With roots dating back to the 1880s, the Star Ferry was one of the only connections between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon for almost 100 years. Make sure to ride on the Upper Deck of the ferry for optimal viewing opportunities.

Crystal Car to Big Buddha – One of China’s five “Big Buddhas”, the Tian Tan Buddha statue (informally known as the Big Buddha) on Lantau Island is one of the largest Buddhist monuments in the world, and the largest seated bronze Buddha anywhere. Buy your tickets ahead of time online to avoid long queues for the newly constructed cable cars., and make sure to experience the Crystal Cabin — it’s worth the extra price!

Victoria Peak Tram – Take a ride up the Victoria Peak Tram and enjoy a step into history. One of the first forms of public transportation in Hong Kong, the Peak Tram, and Victoria Peak itself, remain  some of the best views of Hong Kong.

I love that the gallery is inciting a future generation of homegrown Picassos by providing workshops and outreach programs for youths from kindergarten through grade twelve. The art programs are available through the gallery’s in-house school and throughout the community. By raising money, the gallery hopes to provide transportation for schools that can’t afford access to the gallery.

The ACAD Wearable Art class, lead by the vibrant  jeweler, artist and instructor Dee Fontans kicked off the runway by first showcasing the student work. Seeing the students’ ideas executed through wearable art was probably my favourite part of the evening. Local designers and boutiques that participated this year included Paul Hardy,  Lara Presber,  Coco + Violet,  Leo Boutique, Echo Evenings,  Henry Singer, and  BCBG.

At home you know your way around the kitchen and you are generally very familiar with the growling stomachs awaiting in your living-room. Walking into a commercial kitchen felt a bit like being 10 years old at Toys “R” Us but at the same time overwhelming to be on different turf, with the added pressure to not screwup. For a minute we felt like we were in an episode of Hell’s Kitchen or IronChef, it was a lot of fun. Once the starter and the main had been served we found the time to sit and meet with everyone for dessert and some wine. The guest were gracious and seemed to be having a pleasant evening, we definitely enjoyed everyones company. Interactive Monday is exactly that, interactive, with good food, great wine and lovely company.

It was definitely a lot of fun especially with Joel Goralski topping off our wineglasses.

“I am a student at the university of fine arts, hungary. at one of the descriptive geometry classes we had a task to find and draw theperspective and horizon lines of renaissance and other pictures with significant perspective space. I thought it is not that interesting to just draw lines, so I decided to erase all the characters from them and examine how the painter really created the perspective spaceand how it actually looks.I saw this could be something exciting and continued thinking and working on it. after a while I found myself interested in the new atmosphere and the new thoughts the retouched pieces generated without their main subjects.”

The lights dim and a deeply smooth operatic voice envelopes the room. Bearded, black and squeezed into a teensy, weensy lycra catsuit , La Gateau Chocolat emerges on to stage. Over the top, fabulous, tremendously talented and most certainly not like anything you’ll have ever seen before.

Strolling about a stage strewn in sequins, tulle and of course his signature lycra he is every bit the seasoned professional in his recent one man show at the Menier Chocolate Factory. Bellowing out a captivating opera rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares to You” the audience is absolutely breathless and it is clear that behind all the smoke and mirrors it’s this incredible vocal talent and raw charm that is leading him so quickly to the top.

With a list of star studded performances behind him ranging from the London sell-out cabaret La Soiree/La Clique and their  Australian tour, to various television appearances on the BBC, to singing with the Basement Jaxx and even performing at both Katie Price and  David Shwimmer’s  weddings, its hard to believe he’s still fairly new on the scene!

With another solo show in the works, and talks about a debut at Syndey Opera House it seems that life could not be sweeter for the London Drag Diva who has become one of the hottest tickets  in town.

TK:Where were you or when was it that you first discovered you could sing?

LGC: I always wanted to sing from as far back as I can remember. I’m still not a fan of my voice but I absolutely “j’adore” the storytelling and connecting you capture with strangers through music.

TK: What was your first song you performed on stage/ where?

LGC: Oh god, I don’t remember. It must have been singing about a blooming rainbow in primary school aged 7? I think I was colour red?!

TK: What would you like to be your last?

LGC: Jesus, your questions are full on! I’m still discovering my repertoire so I don’t have a definitive but if it were tomorrow- it would be “When I Have Sung My Songs To You” by Ernest Charles. Simple and beautiful.

TK: You are well known for your love of performing in head to toe Lycra costumes. When was the first time you put one on, was it love at first “try”?

LGC: My first lycra costume was handed down to me from a performer friend of mine named Dolly Rocket. I looked like a complete asshole and I “j’adored” every second of it!

TK: What is your favourite song to perform?

LGC: The songs in my show are the soundtrack to my life. Literally jumping from Radiohead to Pucinni to Showboat  to Prince- like my ipod. They represent particular moments and require different technical approaches, so I love them all for different reasons.

TK: Your one man show was so intimate and revealing and incredibly funny, did you feel a lot of pressure or more nerves performing as a solo show?

LGC: The opening lyrics, words in my show are “I don’t know why i’m frightened, I know my way around here… ” and it couldn’t be truer. Just before I come on especially in a new city, my heart rate’s up, the blood’s racing, I sometimes feel sick and then I whisper those words that acknowledge how i’m feeling, exhale and then I’m off! The adreneline and nerves are such a love/hate relationship because in the the end tehy really become the most addictive part!

TK: Did you plan the show very long in advance? What elements of the show were most important to you?

LGC: The most important thing for me was to show the audience the man behind the mask; the maquillage, lycra, lashes… what some might consider to be a masquerade.  Undercut the hyper-visual, and all the things you might consider as making us different with honesty and humanity- to discover those are the things that make us all the same!

TK: You say in your performance that you once auditioned for a big musical company and were rejected, do you think that has been a blessing to your career?

LGC: It was actually the Royal Academy of Music in London; A conservatoire, to train as an opera singer. So far it has worked out to be a blessing indeed! I got rejected in 2010 and it motivated me to write my show and here I am on the brink of debuting at the Sydney Opera House after just finishing my London season at the Menier Chocolate Factory. Touch wood this surreal journey continues in this vein.

TK: Who has been your biggest inspiration?

LGC: Many incredible artists. From Boogaloo Stu for unshackled levels of assholism, Renee Fleming/Jessye Norman/Leontyne Price – Voice, Paul Capsis/Adrian Howells/Jonny Woo- Drag artistry and performance, Dolly Rocket- Make up, My mum, My close friends, The Cast and Creative team of La Soiree/La Clique… The list is endless.

I’m very much still in a state of evolution and as there’s no school of cabaret but I pick up tips and tricks of the craft everywhere I go!

You were one of the most memorable, stand out performances of the popular and highly acclaimed LaClique/La Soiree, when were you first approached to perform with them? Were you excited to be part of the tour?

LGC: When I first joined them,  I didn’t really know who they were or the impact they’d have on my performance trajectory or the incredible things we would do together. They have become my surrogate family since the first performing with them in January 2009 at the London hippodrome.

What can we expect to see from you next? Perhaps an opera?

LGC: I would love love love to write an opera or perform an opera as myself- Le Gateau Chocolat is Madame Butterfly… Genius!
I’m already working on the next piece,  “Noir” Dark Chocolate.
TK: Lastly if someone was coming to London for one day only what’s one thing you would tell them they have to do?

LGC: To not have an itinerary but be open to falling in love with this crazy city. Eat at Princi or Dean Street Townhouse in Soho, see a show in the west end. Go east- get lost, walk into a crazy house party filled with drag queens. Go south and meet my disco family at Horsemeat Disco on a sunday…etc. The possibilities are endless!

Crowds of snap happy bloggers and style spotters lined the entrance of Somerset House where stylists, fashion editors, and all creatures great and small eagerly entered the main court…some giving masterclasses in style and faultless grooming while others looked as though they put on a piece from every Halloween costume they ever owned!

The designers likewise pulled out all the stops. There were live streams from nearly every catwalk, fashion films,installations, pre parties, after parties, political statements and at the heart of it all that undeniable edge and talent that only the British do best!

Leading London lads Christopher Kane, Giles, Henry Holland, Ashish and Meadham Kirchhoff filled the headlines with their polished, playful and innovative collections while other Brits like megabrand Burberry showcased David Bailey’s fearless nature to push boundaries and put on a fabulous show along with Mulberry who housed the most star studded front row of the entire fashion week including Olivia Palermo, Lana Del Rey, Anna Wintour and Kate Moss!

Newcomers  like shoe designer Sophia Webster and award winner Haizhen Wang very nearly stole the show with their seamless collections and beautifully designed lines that were sure to have filled the order books throughout their time at Somerset House. While second time presenters Sister by Sibling put together one of the most talked about and photographed collections proving why the brand is rapidly growing from strength to strength!

Wild child’s Louise Gray, Vivienne Westwood, knitwear king Mark Fast, KTZ, and JW Anderson produced equally creative and colorful collections to wide critical acclaim. But none perhaps were as over the top, triumphant and jaw dropping as the catwalk presentation from master milliner Philip Treacy who not only filled his catwalk with all black models for the first time in history but with sky high hats in a collection entirely supported and inspired by Michael Jackson’s wardrobe and introduced by Lady Gaga!

Harold Tillman chairman of The British Fashion Council passed down his reign at the end of the week to Net-A-Porter founder and billionaire Natalie Massenet who commented  ”This London Fashion Week has once again been phenomenal; the British fashion industry today is a globally recognised power house.” Power aside, one thing for sure the British designers certainly left a lot to live up to for next season.

Named for the Spanish translation for “butterfly,” Mariposa celebrates the Monarch butterfly that is indigenous to the Tequila region of Mexico. The artisanal liqueur is enhanced with hints of rose oil and gardenia which creates delicate layers of complex flavour and aroma.

Agave nectar comes from the same plant as tequila and is a substitute for simple syrup and sugar in your cocktails. Below are two delicious cocktail recipes.

Mariposa Agave Nectar Liqueur

RECIPE 1

The Great Migration

1.5 oz London Dry gin
.75 oz Mariposa Liquor
.75 oz lemon juice
.25 oz simple syrup
Raw sugar coated rim
Lemon zest

Combine liquid ingredients in a shaker, rim stemmed cocktail glass with sugar. Shake ingredients and pour into rimmed cocktail glass, express lemon over top.

RECIPE 2

Blueberry Morpho

Bartender Matt Biancaniello of the Library Bar at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles created the Blueberry Morpho using Mariposa liqueur.

2.0 oz  Mariposa
.75 oz fresh lime juice
1.0 oz  fresh blueberry juice

Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker, fill with ice. Shake and strain into an old fashioned glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with fresh blueberries and a slice of lime. (Alternative options: pomegranate or grape juice would also work well with the floral notes in the Mariposa.)

Her last collection for Autumn/Winter 2012 turned heads with models strutting down the catwalk wearing elaborate fan headresses, and sky-high beehives, draped in multi-layered print, electrifying accents, and style clashes that only the brave Louise Gray can seem to execute.

This week she’s about to pass on her eccentric style to her adoring London fans in her debut collection for Topshop which will feature a glittering collection of sequin dresses, t-shirts, trousers and evening jackets alongside a makeup line inspired by Gray’s colorful signature look.

Effortlessly cool, eternally daring and completely in tune with what’s on trend, Louise Gray was a perfect match for Topshop when they sponsored her as part of NEWGEN and Fashion East in 2010. “I’m so happy to be working on a range of party dresses and t-shirts with Topshop. I have been working with the team since they first sponsored my collection through NEWGEN a few years ago, and it was great to create this collection with them. The dresses and tops are all totally covered in sequins and I made them to go dancing in. My mainline collections have always been about pushing optimism, colour and fun and I wanted to bring that to the Topshop collection as well. I want the Topshop girl to stay out all night in it!” said Louise Gray.

Louise Gray’s collection hits the floor this week and will no doubt be an instant sell-out, similar to Topshop’s previous collections with influential “it” designers such as Christopher Kane, Ashish and textile maven Mary Katranatzou.

Refreshingly laid back, effortlessly cool, and full of class, it was no surprise that from the very start London Collections: Men would be a tremendous success. The dedicated menswear event created by GQ’s Dylan Jones and the British Fashion Council was the first time running and left a lot to live up to in the future years to come, not only for its outstanding show line-up and orgainization but for the pure and simple vibe throughout.

Showcasing fashion through a man’s eyes, with no attitude or style posing attached, proved a success at making the clothes and designers shine. People celebrated the industry without any pretense — quite different from London Fashion Week when all the female claws seem to come out!

Lack of snobbery, however, did not take away from the scene-stealing style the men put forth daily. The gents consistently pulled out all the stops with impeccable tailoring, expert layering, and colour popping accessories, confirming London’s place as a worldwide fashion destination for both sexes. Us women will have to watch out.
