rejuvenating a homemade wooden spoon

about 3 or 4 years ago I made a run of mahogany spoons for relatives as Christmas gifts.

Gave one to my wife and it is getting dried out. Today I put a generous coat of mineral oil. This is the result …
...

cutting a 60° /

I am trying to do the 3D cutting board and the plan shows cutting at 60° with the cut pieces being 1 1/2” wide, my question is do I just start cutting the pieces at the proper width and toss the scrap or do I slide the board in so the corner nearest me is in line with the blade and make this my first cut?

shop floor

ok so i wasn’t sure where to put this but i recently was offered some computer floor that i passed on. ruffly 1000sf of it with 1 foot risers.

well i guess i wasn’t thinking at the time or maybe i just need to think about it and get advice from the the jock on this.

OK here’s my situation my shop is a pole barn/ garage that i don’t use much in the winter cause it terrible expensive to heat due to a lack of insulation. and the floor is not level it sloped to the floor drain in the middle of the building.

here’s my thought i use the raised floor on half the building this will give me a place to chase all the ducting for a DC and i could possible put in floor heating not sure on that not to mention i was also thinking i could use parts of this dead space to store lumber.

given the height of the ceiling i dot foresee their to be any height concerns any thoughts on this idea would be helpful.

sharpening saw blades

First off it’s good to be back after my injury to my back which I twisted a little while ago. Thanks to those of you who asked after me God Bless all of you for being really wonderful friends to me over the last year or so,it means evrything to me as my shops are apart from my wonderful wife of almost forty years Bronwen and my sons Alistair Russell and Ewen and immediate family, including Lucie and Reuben Jay my darling wee grandson whom I adore.Alistair

My woodshop saw man has not been around for about a year .I live in the HIghlands of Scotland by the sea and my nearest big city is a car ferry ride and an hours drive just to get there through thick traffic. This is both time consuming and expensive when you add it up it’s becoming easier just to buy new blades when my expensive blades get dull.So I am saving them up.I recently saw a device for sharpening blades on ebay I have facilities to make a similar device myself and intend to.I just want to check what part of the blades get sharpened ? I know you never relieve the thickness of the teeth so that they always remain the same saw kerf when cutting.I just don’t know if you do underneath where the blade meets the wood or also on top.any advice or a site covering this would be helpful.Alistair

Yet Another Table Saw Thread

I have been looking at saws for quite some time, both new and used. There have been some pretty good deals on Uni-Saws. In fact I almost purchased a used Uni-Saw about 4 months back. I am glad I did not though. A cabinet maker friend of mine, who I buy my lumber through, is selling his old Powermatic 66, Extended table, Accu-fence, with a full size Jet dust collector. This saw is about 18 years old, no rust. He has taken very good care of it. When he opened up his new shop he got a 5 hp saw and hasn’t used this one. I do not have picts yet. I am afraid to post his price because based on my research, it is such a good deal that some one will swoop in a pick it up before I can. :) (He already told me it is mine when I have the cash.)

So, out of curiosity, how much do you guys think this setup would generally run for?

picture frame supplies

Hello all,

I am doing some research for the next projects which will be picture frames that will be given as Christmas gifts. Can anyone give any recommendations on the best/cheapest place to go to find picture frame supplies, such as glass, backing or clamps to hold the backing? Thanks in advance for any help.

Accurate and repeatable measurements - your methods reqested

OK, I admit it – I’m early in my woodworking skills development. But now that I have acquired a great tablesaw and superb blades for it, plus high quality routers and bits – I have noticed that my “parts” often come together with a variance from plan of 1/64” to 1/32”. This often leads to small gaps and misalignments. Don’t get me wrong, if I can cut the parts against the saw’s fence or use a jig or sled – they all come out the same size. But if I cut the two sides of a cabinet and then cut separately the top and bottom to fit into the rabbets – they can easily end up a small amount off in length. I realize that some of this can come down to doing things in the correct sequence – e.g. mill all the parts that share a dimension at the same time. That’s not always possible, though. But that’s not what I fear is my biggest problem: measurement. By that I mean when I go to measure a dimension I make my mark and work from it. But, how fine should the line/mark be? Does one always “take the line”, or do you “keep” the line? If, due to physical constraints you have to cut from the “part” side of the line or the “scrap” side of the line, how do you ensure accuracy/consistency? Do you always use the same measurement tool, rather than switching between multiple ones?

Perhaps I’m just being AR, but when you put together multiple parts these little measurement variances add up! Thanks in advance if you have some methods to share!

How about an Acronym dictionary

I’d like to see a dictionary of acronyms used at LJ. Sometimes after finding a post that seems to have my answer, the use of acronyms makes me unsure of the product or material being referenced. Especially in the finishing posts there could be safety issues for a novice not knowing the right definition.

For a current post, you could just ask, but for those several hundred days old posts the questions aren’t always made.

Pease leave out the humor acronyms. While I enjoy them, it wouldn’t help to go through them when doing a serious search to make sure that a post is understood. Coffee lounge is a great place for them when needing a break.

They don’t all have to be “industry” ones. Just need to be for LJ info useage.

The real dream would be tags or categories besides alphabetical. Some categories could be; finishing, cutting, turning, chemicals…

No idea on what is involved, but one of those “wiki” for the acronyms would work.

I am in awe of the designs of the boxes although perplexed how one goes about gluing up the wood to get the different wood designs, could someone explain this mystery?
Jim
