wheelbarrow

Got tired of dragging yard waste, mulch etc around on an old tarp, and too cheap to buy a wheelbarrow, so the pile of pine 1×4s in the basement got turned into this. The wheel was cut from a bit of scrap plywood. Maybe if the thing holds up I’ll make a wheel out of pine boards just to keep with the theme. The axle is made from an old piece of steel rod that was laying around, only because I did not have an appropriate sized wooden dowel. The box part does not overhang the handles at all as in most wheelbarrows, so it’s capacity is a bit small for a wheelbarrow, but it simplified construction. Very simple, designed on the fly, and just nailed together, but so far it’s serving it’s purpose.

Never really tried hand cut dovetails other than attempting a Gary Rogowski 5 minute one here and there. I’ve got lots of improvement needed but it was fun trying.

Sonus Faber Tribute Speakers

These are my tributes to the phenomenal Sonus Faber Cremonia Auditor stand mount speakers. I have been at these for a year now (have to include a cross country move) and the work has been very involved. Because my bandsaw has only 7” of cutting height I had to cut the bullet shape in two sections and then rasp, grind sand and sand some more to achieve this shape. The drivers (I have them) for each cabinet are true to what the factory specs are (they are a 6K pair of speakers) and most of the components for the crossovers too. These are being set aside right now as I am knee deep into getting ready for a run of dining tables that hopefully will allow me the money and time to finish the speakers and put them on a display floor too. These are made from off cuts from three different runs of oak kitchen cabinet doors, that’s why the interiors are a bit rough – I just cannot throw offcuts away ya know!! The next ones will be made from thicker maple that will be conditioned before staining – learned that lesson the hard way!!

Kalimbe Bench

This is my first post on lumberjacks so I guess I’ll go ahead and post my latest piece. This a bench that I built out of walnut and white oak. It was built for the Andre Christine art gallery in Mooresville NC and lucky for me, they already sold it.
The idea was to create the seat for the bench using a series of boards that have no curves on them, only hard angles but create the illusion of curves when all the boards are put together in a row. Each piece had to be made individually as no two were the same.
It was a challenging project but I was happy with the results.

It represents the Frank Lloyd Wright style. The plans came from an article in wood magazine. The wood is Padauk and maple. The finish is mylands sanding sealer,(#@$##%&**)=Indicates difficulty in brushing a smooth coating. Topcoat is Deft gloss lacquer. comments always welcome. Thanks for looking.

It is very simple. 2×6rails, 2×4 ledge and work bench casters she had on hand. Simple. All we had to purchase was a few bolts.

Hi Everyone, it has been awhile since I have had a new project!
Well this is a Bentwod ring made out of Greyed Maple, and Walnut Burl that I made for a very good friend of mine. He is a newer friend (Neighbor) but he can’t be beat, anytime my health will not let me do something he comes to my rescue. I have been in and out of the hospital the last couple of months, I think I have been home maybe a week or so in those two months and he has helped me with chores and cutting grass and things that just need to be done but I could not do. He has done all of this all the while he has a very lovely but very pregnant wife. They are expecting their second child any day now. The Greyed Maple came from Fellow LJ member and Master ring maker FrankLad. Thanks to him as well!!
I have a lot of rings and other little trinkets in the works, I hope I can stay out of the hospital to finish them.
Thank you all for looking and for any comments, I really enjoy reading the feedback Good or Bad!

I also want to say thanks to my daughter for using my light box to take the pictures. I think she did a great job.

Morning glory gate

I have made this gate for/with my wife. We have some aesthetic decoration on our church stage and my wife liked how our friend incorporated twine into the design. THis creative detail sparked some interest in my wife and wanted to know if I could build a gate to replace the ragged/haggard one that filled this spot. She had in mind a gate that could have this twine design in it that would have a potting trough at the bottom of the gate to house soil for the future morning glories that would vine and tangle their ways up the twine creating a much desired effect. Well, as you can plainly see the morning glories were just planted today. So, no pretty blue blooms just yet. I only post one pic because it was all butt joints and nothing special or too specific. I made it out of pine of differing species, so it is nice and light. I just hope the HOA people don’t get into a hizzie because this gate is a one of a kind and not one that is conforming to standards. Should you also enjoy this idea, feel free to copy away.

Cheers!

Seemed like such a simple solution to a common problem. And it was. Congrats to Woodshaver. Thanks for the easy plan details.i used some reclaimed hard maple from old gym floor and some walnut for contrast. I book matched a rip of a small piece I had laying around. I used it on 3- 6” jointer blades, 220 grit wet/dry followed by 500grit. Fortunately I have a granite top table saw so a flat surface was easy to find. Worked like a charm. So easy, it’s almost comical. No reason to buy blades if you own one of these. Again thanks to LJ’s woodshaver who provided the details

Basically it is two pieces of 30” plywood with a 3/4” pipe stub, floor flange and six casters. It allows you to rotate the work as you are applying stain etc.

Shaper turned router table

So a year and a half ago I inherited via a chain of uncles my grandpa’s 1947 unisaw, lathe and a delta shaper. I took the shaper apart, cleaned it all up and built a mobile cart and drawers for it. I added new fences and a larger table to it as well as some dust collection. a year later and the motor went and died on me. I had never really used it for anything and frankly it kind of scared me. I checked the capacitor and the centrifugal switch and the problem was beyond my capabilities. Since the motor was a 3450 rpm I couldn’t find an easy replacement. I already have a nice router table so I put this up on craigslist. No bites.

I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away. The cart was cut down in height for a new 14” bandsaw but the cute little cast iron table was staring at me. I said they, that would make a cute heavy little portable router table. I turned it over and tried to figure a way to mount the router base to the underside of the table but the cast iron ribs get in the way and would not allow the router collet to rise nearly high enough. I decided to build a router lift. I thought about using a moving wedge to lift it which led me to the idea of using a bearing riding inside of and angled groove (see picture 2). The assembly which moves up and down (picture 4) slides up and down in dadoed rails. The side crank (picture 3) pushes/pulls the 3 sided box with the angled slots from side to side forcing the assembly up and down. It all moves surprisingly smoothly an I love the idea of the side crank. The whole unit with the heavy shaper fence on top weighs a good 50 pounds and stands about 14 inches high to the table top. The first picture is a little fuzzy but that is the whole unit sitting on my bench. Picture 5 and 6 show the original yet refurbished shaper before I really frankensteined it.

Mind you, I have no real use for a 2nd shaper table and this was more of a proof in concept for me. It was quick and dirty construction but didn’t cost me a cent. I haven’t put it through a torture test but I don’t believe there will be any height creep simply because the upward/downward force would have to change into a lateral force (angular?), I just sprained my noggin.

Thanks for looking.

Well, it arrived, and today I turned a small bowl, trying to use as much of the burl as I could. Although this thing is small… it is beautiful.

Painted with old time milk paint then sanded and dyed with russet amber dye and finished with a low gloss tung oil finish. The last two pics are what I call an 18th century dead bolt. Eddie Castelin to make this small finial out of walnut. I used his tip to turn a precise tenon diameter with a sharpened, open end wrench—it works like a charm.

I then used a collet chuck to hold this small piece of walnut securely for turning. I had no plan for the final shape but I let it just emerge. It turned out looking like the Eiffel tower to me. I quickly turned an oak base to stick it in for a little display piece. Not sure what I’ll do with it now but the techniques I learned were really fun to put into practice and I want to thank Capt. Eddie for his sense of humor, his skill and his willingness to pass that knowledge on to anyone that wants it.
Jon

It's not about the pen, well sort of...

It is about hubris. I’ve made literally hundreds of pens over the years but there was something about this one that felt perfect. I’d gotten a perfect fit at the mating surfaces with the metal, the finish was top notch and I really liked the resin color and the copper color of the metal. I showed it off to my wife and the next morning I picked it up to show it to some friends at work——-and it wouldn’t turn to extend the pen or come apart! I must have gotten a little to anxious to put it together before a glob of super glue dried and the thing was frozen solid.

I tried everything up to and including destroying the pen to get it to work but no go. I’m glad I’d taken a couple photos because that is all I have left to show for the effort. Pride goeth before the throwing away of the pen.

The practical moral of this story, I guess, is wait a day or so to assemble your pen if you use super glue. Also, I learned that craftsmanship and common sense don’t always go hand in hand.
Jon

Small Chest

Still enamored with box joints that I produce on my router jig, but thought I’d try something a little different by using the joints on an upper and lower wrapped frame. The lid panel wood came from the same pallet as the Acacia, so assume it is the same species only with a lot more character and color.

Pallet boards and flooring samples: Acacia, Cherry, Poplar, Walnut, Red Meranti, and Red Oak for the bottom boards.

11” wide, 17” long, 12 3/8” high

Natural Danish Oil & WB Polyurethane
