Holiday Presents: wine bottle balancers, candle holders, menorah

This being my first holiday season as a somewhat established woodworker, its fitting that i mass produced a set of gifts for friends and family. The wine bottle balancers (14) and candle holders (23) are based on popular designs i saw in others’ projects. The menorah (just 1 for my folks) is just an extension of the candle holders, of course. A set of heart-shaped ornaments (12) made of the same 5-ply stock will follow, with pics i hope.

Details: wood is cherry, oak (either a light red or dark white), and mahogany (reclaimed!). I used the quarter-sawn faces of the oak and mahogany for the wine balancers and menorah. Much of the cherry is also the quarter-sawn face, although that wasnt intentional. Finish is 3 coats Minwax Antique oil (wiping oil-varnish blend), followed by rubbing in paste wax with 0000 steel wool. I rushed the wax coating on after only 2 days of drying the last finish coat, which made some of the finish look odd in spots – hardly noticable, but nothing to be proud of.

This was my first time using each of these woods. Notes: I like the look and feel of the cherry more than i expected to. It’s almost buttery – almost like walnut, but with less fragrance. The oak is much nicer than the red oak i used previously, especially quarter sawn, and especially on the end-grain parts. I like how its reminiscent of bamboo. I did NOT like working the mahogany. Even that sparkly quarter sawn face to me felt very lifeless. Also, it didnt machine well – it was slightly furry feeling even at its best.

In terms of tools, this project required the purchase of a set of forstner bits (the Grizzly H6334) which worked out quite nicely, and drill press (those 2” bits have a lot of throw!). That worked out well for me, wouldnt you say? ;-)

Strapped 3 Birdhouse

Yet another birdhouse. The back corners were drilled and filled with oak dowels. The roof was cut from heavy rusted straps I found beside a set of railroad tracks. I dressed up the entry with a spalted maple ring I cut out. The hinged front is kept closed with twisted copper wire pins. Finished it off with some poly on the outside.

shaker inspired, double drawer night table

Hi all

Just completed this second piece of a bedroom set for my little girl. The first piece was a writing desk. Next piece will be a 6 drawer dresser which I already have all the parts rough milled.

I used machines for milling and hand tools for the rest, no sandpaper. Side hung drawers.

Hard maple with curly drawer fronts, 3 coats of “Tried and True” finish (blo and natural resin varnish) top was waxed afterwards.

sorry for the so-so quality pictures, it is suprising the difference when the flash is on, the piece gets darker and yellow

Tall mic stand

Taking a needed break from the sideboard for a quickie: My real gig is music and I needed a tall microphone stand to record a pipe organ. This one stretches up 20 feet (6m) and collapses down to fit in my car. I’ve got another section that would take it up to 25, but that actually turned out to be overkill for this gig. PVC certainly isn’t the most elegant of materials but I had to work fast. At least there’s some wood (albeit scrap framing lumber) in there.

Total cost: $8

Arts & Crafts Coffee Table - Two Flavours

These coffee tables are almost identical except for a few details and the wood species. One is made out of solid cherry. The other is white oak. Built in the Arts & Crafts style. The square holes in the top are echoed in the main stretcher below. Breadboard ends add stability and the five-facet tips add visual interest. In keeping with the philosophy behind the Arts & Crafts’ movement this piece is built with 48 mortise and tenon joints, four of which are through tenons connecting the arched stretchers to the legs. Ebony plugs on the cherry version have slightly rounded edges and protrude slightly from the adjacent surface. They are housed in shallow mortises. On the white oak version the plugs have been shaped like a pyramid, a detail that was reproduces in the main stretcher. The plugs on the cherry version actually hide screws that connect the breadboard end to the main piece of the top. Screws don’t hold very strongly in end grain so wooden plugs were glued in the top’s tenons to provide side grain for the screws to bite into. See last picture. On the white oak version I used wooden pegs driven from the underside to keep the breadboards and top tightly together. Finish for the cherry version is a wipe on satin polyurethane over a tinted Danish oil. For the white oak version I used aniline dye, followed by gel stain, followed by wipe on poly. Inspiration for this table came from a similar piece by Kevin Rodel featured in Fine Woodworking magazine #178.
