Get Started with Quantcast Tracking

Quantcast is one of the Web’s best sources for tracking, not only web site traffic, but also who those visitors are. For example, check out this Quantcast audience profile for Lunarpages. You can see that in the US, 54% of the visitors are men, and 46% are female. Details like this can really help you target your content to the audience that is viewing it – or perhaps target your data to reach those who are not checking out your site, for one reason or another.

Now the information your can gather without signing up for Quantcast is limited. Where you can get a real advantage is signing up, pasting the embed code on your own sites, and then start really learning about who is visiting your web site.

Create an Account – You must sign up for a free account at Quantcast to be able to gather even more information about your web site traffic and users. Click the “Create Account” link at the top of the web page to get started with the process.

Add Your Web Site – Now, you will want to get started with the “quantification” process. Click the “Add a Site” button to grab the tracking code you will need.

Copy/Paste Code – Next, you will want to copy the tracking code from the Quantcast web site, and embed it into all of your web pages. It you are using something like WordPress, Joomla or some other content management system – you can often copy and paste this code into the “footer” of your web site’s web design template files.

Scan the Site – Now you want to put in the domain name (www.yourdomainname.com) into the site scanner, so that Quantcast can scan for the code you embedded in all of your web pages.

Your last step in this process is to wait. It will take a few days before you are able to gather enough information for your traffic to become useful to you.

Here are a few more things to remember:

Traffic data will appear in 4-6 days. Until then your profile will be marked as “Quantification in Progress.”
Demographic data takes around 10 days to populate. Note that Quantcast generally cannot provide demographic data on websites with less than 1,000 US visitors per month.
Business and Geographic data will populate after 30 days of being Quantified.

Now you will be able to find even more data out about the people who visit your web site. This provides you with one more way to quickly measure what people are doing on your web site, who they are and how many visitors are there too. Quantcast is currently used by 9 of the top 10 media agencies, more than half of the top publishers (by ad revenue), and marketers from every major vertical use them to define, buy, or sell the audiences that matters to them most.

ID vs Class in CSS Web Design

For anybody who has spent any time working with CSS (cascading style sheets), you have to know there is a lot of confusion when it comes to using an id or a class when compiling your web site layout. Both are selectors, but how should they be used?

What is the ID selector?

The general syntax for an ID selector is:

#idselector {property:value;}

This should really only be used once per web page. For example if I was designing a standard site with the body of the page on one side and the sidebar on the other side, I would use two different ID selectors, one for the body and one for the sidebar. I wouldn’t use the body one twice, because it already covers everything it needs to cover (as far as styling goes) the first time I used it. You can use it to cover a lot of things in one clean sweep, all at once.

What is the Class selector?

The general syntax for a Class selector is:

.classselector {property:value;}

The Class selector is to be used for defining smaller elements within the ID selector. Going back to my earlier example, lets say I wanted to define how my headline tags looked – and my links for that section of the web page. I would then turn around and use a Class selector for each of those. Think of this as the “picky” selector, allowing you to tweak things within the ID selector.

In a nutshell, you should use the ID selector when there is only one occurrence per web page, and the Class selector when there are more than one occurrence per web page. What happens if you do it the “wrong way”, well nothing really – of course learning how to use your web design tools the right way, rather than just to hack it all together, will help with troubleshooting error sand problems down the road.

Mind Maps for Webmasters

When it comes to planning out a brand new web site, organizing your thoughts can be rather difficult. You might know that you want to design a web site about a specific topic, but can’t decide what else you might need in that web site to help it become successful. Mind maps are one great way to get your jumbled thoughts about your site organized.

What is a Mind Map? A mind map (or the process of mind mapping) is when you create a diagram using specific words, ideas or tasks and arrange them around a central theme or idea. By doing this, you can visualize, structure and classify ideas based around your central theme.

For an example, take a look at this mind map of my breakfast:

The centralized idea here is what I had for breakfast. You can see I had a slice of toast,a bowl of cereal and a glass of orange juice. To take it a step further, we could branch out even further with the idea of toast, like so:

What made up the toast? Well, it was a toasted slice of bread, with butter on it. So off the idea of toast, I listed bread and butter. See how easy taking one idea like breakfast and coming up with ways to visualize how it came to be?

How to Mind Map Your Site! Now that you are familiar with what a mind map is and how to use it, it is time to look at web site organization. You just got a Basic hosting plan from Lunarpages, and you want to start up a web site about super heroes. So with the super heroes topic, how could you divide it up? How about you split it into two for now, DC Comics and Marvel Comics – the two biggest comic book brands.

Now you have at least two pages planned out. Under DC Comics, you could list heroes like the Green Lantern, Batman and Superman because they all come from the DC Comics brand. For Marvel Comics, you could list super heroes like Spiderman, Iron Man, and Wolverine.

So that should be a good start as far as content goes. So what other specific pages does a web site need? What about a page that tells about the web site? Maybe, you could add a page with your contact information too.

See how organizing ideas in a mind map is helpful when it comes to organizing your web site? Much like a tree, you start at the trunk, and then break your web site into branches, and then those branches have branches, and then those branches have leaves.

What Tools and Software Can You Use for Mind Maps? Ok, so you know what to do and how to do it, now you’re probably just needing a way to get it done. You really don’t need anything too fancy to get this accomplished. For years, I just used notebook paper and pencil to sketch out my ideas into a mind map. There are some online solutions as well as software solutions you might want to check out to bring mind mapping into the digital age.

Bubbl.us is what I have been using for my screenshots above. It is an online tool that lets you drag and drop your ideas around on the mind map a very simple task. It might be a little confusing at first, but hover over anything you have a question about and you can get more information about it in the help pane in the browser. Wikipedia also has a long list of mind mapping software solutions worth checking into.

Importance of Permalinks in WordPress

Any search engine optimization expert will tell you that having a good permalink structure for your web site is key to its success. Now, within WordPress you are given several different methods for getting this done.

What are Permalinks, and How Should I Use Them?

Permalinks are, in a nutshell, how your links are formatted after your domain name in the browser’s address bar. The URL to each post you create should be permanent, and never change. The default way WordPress handles permalinks is attaching a number to the address, like this:

http://example.com/?p=N

That isn’t very pretty or useful to us at all. In your own WordPress admin section, go to Settings > Permalinks to change how they appear. Using mod_rewrite you can easily make them more functional. WordPress gives you the choice of:

Date and Name
Month and Name
Numeric
or Custom

I find the Day and Name the most useful, since I might do multiple posts in one day, however if you want to shorten it – the Month and Name option also does well in the search engines. Also, using the “custom” option, you can setup your own format you want the link to be shown as. For example, if you just used:

yourdomain.com/%postname%/

Then all of your links would use the title of the article or post as the link. While this might be short and sweet, it makes it to where you can’t use the same title twice. As you can see, there is a lot of freedom with these options.

Changing Your Permalinks?

Last, but not least – if you chance your permalinks, and how they are setup, after using another method for a long period of time – all is not lost. All you need to do is pick up the Permalinks Moved Permanently plugin.

What does this plugin do?

Right before the old permalink generates a 404, this simple plugin grabs the slug from the end of the request and checks if there’s a post with this slug living somewhere else on your blog. If so, it will generate a “301 Moved Permanently” error, and forward your user to the new location of your post. It’s simple, but effective.

Now, I am not sure if I would recommend this, because it might take a while for your permalinks to change over. However, if you must then this will provide a better way to get the job done.

So, as you can see permalinks are a very important part to any web site, and WordPress gives you the power to get these setup right the first time, or any time after that. Now it is time to take a look at your own web site links to make sure they are both relative and optimized for better rankings in the search engines out there.

Since it is October, the scariest month of the year – I thought there would be no better time than to pick the brains, like my zombie forefathers before me, and find out what everybody’s favorite scary movie is at Lunarpages. So prepare to be scared.

Mike – “Dawn of the Dead – Directed by George Romero back in 1978 scared the crud out of me. I was 13 yrs old and I had nightmares for weeks. The movies of today have great special affects but they lack certain aspects that just make them scary. And if you want to know something funny there was a song that was popular that year called “Magnet & Steel” by Walter Egan the night I saw Dawn of the Dead, I had to sing the chorus in my head just so I could go to sleep. Now every time I hear the song I think of Dawn of the Dead.”
Hugo – “Quarantine – It’s so dark most of the movie you don’t know what’s gonna pop out at you next! And it’s not at all predictable which is great in horror movies. It’s a must for zombie fans!”
