Freedom High School took a first-quarter lead over rival Loudoun County and extended it throughout for a 52-33 win in AA Dulles District girls’ basketball action Dec. 14 in South Riding.

Each side endured a turnover-plagued beginning to the contest, which was within three points after one period. The Eagles (2-0 in district play, 4-1 overall) expanded the margin to 10 by halftime and 19 by the dawn of the fourth quarter.

Freedom senior forward DiDi Scott, an All-Region II performer a year ago, was dominant with 17 points, 17 rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocked shots.

Briar Woods High School senior running back Michael Brownlee has successfully returned to playing at a high level after breaking his leg in the Falcons' 2010 season opener against Millbrook.

In the Falcons' first-ever home playoff game Nov. 12 against Orange County, Brownlee took a direct snap on the game's first play from scrimmage and broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run that set the tone in a 53-7 victory.

Six Loudoun schools — Briar Woods, Broad Run, Dominion, Loudoun Valley, Park View and Stone Bridge — would qualify for the football playoffs if the postseason started today, based on the latest Virginia High School League ratings.

Each district champion qualifies for the playoffs, while the VHSL ratings determine the remainder of the postseason field.

Eight teams qualify for the playoffs in each division of Region II, along with Division 5 of the Northern Region. Six teams advance to the postseason from Division 5 of the Northwest Region.
