Local Gymnast to Tumble for United States

Chelsea Fisher, a Stone Ridge resident, has competed in the sport of gymnastics since she was four years old. Now, her hard work appears to be paying off.

Fisher finished 2nd in Vegas.

Fisher, a senior from Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, earned a spot on the United States Tumbling Team. She and her teammates will compete at the World Age Group Games from Nov. 14 to Nov. 22 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

She was able to qualify for the event by finishing second in the national competition at Las Vegas.

Fisher will be able to bring a bit of additional experience to the mat – she finished 13th at the last World Age Group Games in 2007, hosted in Quebec.

Through months of lifting, practice and playing, high school football players have their sites set on one beacon, one level, one stage – the high school playoffs. That time has come.

This Friday, Nov. 13, under the lights at many fields across the county, the playoffs will begin. Another year featuring the same old trends (Stone Bridge remains dominant) as well as some pleasant surprises (Broad Run goes undefeated) has passed – but anything can happen on Friday night.

Without further ado, here is the list of the area's first round games:

Stone Bridge High School's football team put up big numbers in the first and third quarters (17 and 21, respectively) to overwhelm visting South Lakes 45-22 on Nov. 6.

Stone Bridge Head Coach Mickey Thompson's offense was in running mode, as the Bulldogs tallied 300 yards rushing on 46 attempts and threw the ball just 10 times.

Stone Bridge junior Marcus Harris turned in another strong performance, notching four touchdowns (one from 49 yards) and trucking for 188 yards. He finished the season with 16 rushing touchdowns and 1,476 yards, averaging 6.3 yards a carry.

After squeaking out a 17-14 victory last week against the Langley Saxons, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs looked to continue their Liberty District dominance against the McLean Highlanders.

Despite a decent offensive showing by the Highlanders led by their senior running back Joseph Beiro, the Bulldogs were simply too much, and left McLean with a 38-21 win.

Last year, the Broad Run High School Spartans dominated the Potomac Falls High School Panthers twice.

The first time was in a battle for first place in the Dulles District, where the Spartans had a decisive win, 38-0. The second time was in November 2008 in the Region II Final, as Broad Run beat the Panthers once again, this time by a score of 36-6. They later went on to win the AA State Championship.

After falling to the Madison Warhawks on Monday night, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs had only three days to prepare for the Langley Saxons, who were on a three-game winning streak.

The Saxons gave the Bulldogs all they could handle, but the Bulldogs were able to hold off for a 17-14 win, thanks largely in part to a blocked field goal with just five seconds remaining in the game.
