Chelsea Fisher, a Stone Ridge resident, has competed in the sport of gymnastics since she was four years old. Now, her hard work appears to be paying off.

Fisher finished 2nd in Vegas.

Fisher, a senior from Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, earned a spot on the United States Tumbling Team. She and her teammates will compete at the World Age Group Games from Nov. 14 to Nov. 22 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

She was able to qualify for the event by finishing second in the national competition at Las Vegas.

Fisher will be able to bring a bit of additional experience to the mat – she finished 13th at the last World Age Group Games in 2007, hosted in Quebec.

At the risk of exposing myself as an aging fuddy-duddy, I will admit to you that I am among that dying group of bleary-eyed individuals who still read books. Not online, not on a handheld device, not excerpts and not filmed adaptations – I read actual books.

My wife is a library person. They don’t understand why anyone would want to buy a book that they could just as easily borrow. I have tried to explain to her the comfort and satisfaction I get from having my bound friends filling my bookshelves. But you’re either born a book store person or a library person, and there doesn’t seem to be any way to bridge that gap.

Chalk one up for the forlorn—and shrinking—newspaper industry: the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is sticking with print.

On Nov. 4, the board shot down a proposal that would have sought state permission for the county to stop advertising in newspapers, and rely instead on the Web and television to communicate with residents.

For years, Virginia law has required that localities advertise government events, like public hearings, in newspapers. But in early 2009, two bills were introduced in Virginia’s General Assembly that would have removed this requirement. Facing stiff opposition from the newspaper industry and from advocates of open government, both failed.

Through months of lifting, practice and playing, high school football players have their sites set on one beacon, one level, one stage – the high school playoffs. That time has come.

This Friday, Nov. 13, under the lights at many fields across the county, the playoffs will begin. Another year featuring the same old trends (Stone Bridge remains dominant) as well as some pleasant surprises (Broad Run goes undefeated) has passed – but anything can happen on Friday night.

The recent charity event and pie auction at the Ashburn Presbyterian church suffered no ill effects of the recent economic downturn. The event, which raises money for the Good Shepherd Alliance, raised over $13,000. Last year the event raised $7,500. "We are thrilled beyond words," Dawn Manausa reported, "we attribute our success to the Lord . . . his hand was evident in every aspect of the evening. He isn’t swayed by the economy but pours out his blessings on those who share with their neighbors in their time of need." Manausa's own pie took home the top bid at $150.

St. Theresa's Catholic Church has grown from 118 families in 1991 to nearly 3,500 families in 2009. The parish's brand new church building is to be dedicated by the Most Reverend Paul Loverde on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 4 p.m.

“It took a Parish,” Rev. Richard Guest told his parishioners at all of last Sunday’s masses as he thanked each congregation for their part in building the brand new church building for St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.

Stone Bridge High School's football team put up big numbers in the first and third quarters (17 and 21, respectively) to overwhelm visting South Lakes 45-22 on Nov. 6.

Stone Bridge Head Coach Mickey Thompson's offense was in running mode, as the Bulldogs tallied 300 yards rushing on 46 attempts and threw the ball just 10 times.

Stone Bridge junior Marcus Harris turned in another strong performance, notching four touchdowns (one from 49 yards) and trucking for 188 yards. He finished the season with 16 rushing touchdowns and 1,476 yards, averaging 6.3 yards a carry.

No Shortage of Customers at Leesburg Wegmans

The grand opening of the Leesburg Wegmans on Sunday, Nov. 8, brought enough customers to fill the store's large parking lot. The attached video was taken from around 6:40 a.m. until shortly after opening.

The popular grocery chain, which originated in New York, opened another location after expanding to Sterling just a few years ago. The doors opened at 7 a.m., but a large line had formed by 6:30 a.m.

Four women at the beginning of the line had been there since 4:30 a.m. Talk about love for Wegmans.
