St. Theresa's Catholic Church has grown from 118 families in 1991 to nearly 3,500 families in 2009. The parish's brand new church building is to be dedicated by the Most Reverend Paul Loverde on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 4 p.m.

“It took a Parish,” Rev. Richard Guest told his parishioners at all of last Sunday’s masses as he thanked each congregation for their part in building the brand new church building for St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.

The recent charity event and pie auction at the Ashburn Presbyterian church suffered no ill effects of the recent economic downturn. The event, which raises money for the Good Shepherd Alliance, raised over $13,000. Last year the event raised $7,500. "We are thrilled beyond words," Dawn Manausa reported, "we attribute our success to the Lord . . . his hand was evident in every aspect of the evening. He isn’t swayed by the economy but pours out his blessings on those who share with their neighbors in their time of need." Manausa's own pie took home the top bid at $150.

Potomac Falls High School's production of Macbeth promises to be a highlight of next weekend's local entertainment scene.

“Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.”

In Shakespeare’s "Macbeth," the three witches incant these infamous words and curse the man that they had predicted would one day become the King of Scotland. Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most powerful plays. It was first performed as early as 1611 at the Globe Theatre and published in folio form a decade later in 1623.

The honorable Andrew Bird, former Loudoun County Supervisor for the Sterling District in the 1980s, died on Oct. 29, 2009.

The funeral service was held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon, on Friday, Nov. 6, followed by a burial service at Quantico National Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Bird was a former member of Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, representing Sterling District. Bird was an active member of the community through the JayCees. At one time, Bird was also at regular fixture in theatrical productions with the Blue Ridge Alliance of the Performing Arts. He is warmly remembered by those who knew him for his sense of humor and dedication to the community.

So, I’ve just got to vent. I went over to the hardware store the other day to pick up an item or two. Other than some extortionary prices, everything was fine until I tried to check out.

To begin with, I was a little anxious about my purchase anyway. I’m not exactly “handy” around the house. I can do the basics, but only if I have very clear-cut instructions. In this way, I’m different from my father, who had a tendency to dive into a project before really sketching it out. Ask me about how he tried to cut the wires that makes the car beep when you don’t have your seatbelt on. When he was done, the car still beeped, and it didn’t have heat.

On Nov. 2, Seneca Ridge Middle School Band Director Laurel Naumann Philip visited the Sterling Rotary Club, where she outlined the school’s D.R.E.A.M. Program.

D.R.E.A.M., which is an acronym for “Dare, Reach, And Encourage All with Music, is a program that provides private music lessons for talented music students at Seneca Ridge whose families might otherwise not be able to afford them.

The lessons are given at the school by professional musicians, military band members, and freelance musicians.

Charles Edward “Butch” Hammersley, 66, of Aldie, died Nov. 1, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina.

“Butch” was a devoted life member of Little River Baptist Church in Aldie, where he served Pastor Jesse Parker and the church congregation as deacon, and headed several of the church’s committees throughout the years.
