...to receive updates and share experience in response to the H1N1 “swine flu” pandemic.
Among the critical issues discussed were the ever-increasing number of cases reported in Northern Virginia, the apparent shortage of the H1N1 flu vaccine, and how clinics and hospitals are determining who gets the vaccine first.
Of great concern is the threat to children posed by the disease, which appears to affect the young more severely than older people, which is reflected in mortality rates.

In a controversial move to save money, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors may consolidate some of the operations that Loudoun’s public school system and the county government now both perform, giving supervisors control over some school functions.

At their Nov. 4 meeting in Leesburg, supervisors unanimously agreed to ask state lawmakers for permission to combine duplicated tasks like land acquisition and capital construction, matters that have divided supervisors and school board members of late. Virginia’s General Assembly next meets starting in January.

Supervisors stressed the measure is not an attempt to take power away from the school board, but a change that would cut spending.

A trailer and bobcat were stolen from a construction site at the 23670 block of Overland Dr. in Sterling.

Burglary
Nov. 8, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Unknown persons entered an unoccupied home at the 11690 block of Dutchmans Creed Rd. in Lovettsville, stealing a washing machine, wood stove, toilet, medicine cabinet, light fixtures and a sewage pump.

Destruction of Property
Nov. 6-9
Playground equipment located near the intersection of Freeport Way and Stukely Dr. in Sterling was damaged by unknown persons.

With swine flu dominating the news, it’s little surprise a mass of people turned out for flu vaccinations in Leesburg Nov. 7.

According to Loudoun County health officials, 900 people received vaccinations for the H1N1 virus at Smart’s Mill Middle School on North King Street Saturday. Those most at-risk, such as pregnant women and children and teens, were invited to take part, as the county had enough vaccines available for only 2,000 people.

Loudoun County Health Department director Dr. David Goodfriend said all of the nasal mist versions of the vaccine were dispensed by the end of the day, while some injectable doses were still available.

One charity is breathing easier, as county leaders recently approved a $500,000 grant to keep several local Habitat for Humanity projects, including the renovation of foreclosed homes in eastern Loudoun County, up and running.

A majority of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors decided Nov. 4 to give a portion of the county’s $3 million Housing Trust Fund to Loudoun Habitat for Humanity so the nonprofit can build homes for the needy in western Loudoun and purchase a half-dozen bank-owned homes in Sterling to be fixed up and sold to low- and moderate-income families.
