We only have a couple Google Wave invites left, but I had to share this video that showcases lots of the features of Google Wave. Also, for people that got the invites, it may take as many as 7 days to receive them. I’m not sure why, but that’s what I’ve heard. Enjoy!

Google Wave Invites

FTP is a very useful application service and is of prime importance for bloggers and webserver admins for transferring files to and from servers. It is also necessary for general users to download files from FTP servers.

A good FTP application can make interactions with a server easy. Previously, we covered 5 great and free FTP clients. FileZilla was included on that list, and we like it so much here at LostInTechnology that we felt it deserved its own post.

Features

Some of the great features of FileZilla as an FTP client are:

Site Manager

Site-Manager

The site manager of FileZilla is very powerful and has a lot of features.

Under the General tab, we have option to provide host details which includes host address, connection port, server type selection and login with username and password. There are options to create bookmarks to selected folders on the site, which provides a direct login to the specified location from the Bookmarks drop down menu.

Under the Advanced tab, we can select the server architecture and the default server and local root locations to load when connecting to the site. Options to adjust server timezone offset is also available for a better synchronization.

The Transfer settings tab allows us to select between Active and Passive transfer modes. We can also limit the number of simultaneous connections to the server, managing bandwidth effectively.

The Charset tab allows us to select the character set of the server. This setting can be generally left at Autodetect.

Quick Connect

Quick Connect lets us connect to the site quickly by directly entering the host address, username, port and password. There are no other settings required for this. The quick connect also saves a history of your last visited sites. This makes it easy to reconnect later and eliminates the need for entering details over and over again. The quick-connect history can be cleaned as well if your computer is accessed by many people.

The View

The view is divided into two areas. On the left, we have the local disk, and on the right, we have the server storage. Any changes made to files on the left, prompt you to upload the file with the changes. Choosing yes, keeps data synchronized. The prompt can be safely ignored as well.

Queue Management

FileZilla also provides us with advanced queue management which lets us manage the files being uploaded in an easy way through the GUI. The application supports multi-threaded uploads which is a very useful feature and speeds up transfer of files to a huge extent.

Other Features

Else than the features listed above, there are one click buttons to

Break all connections and disconnect from the server.
Toggle file transfer and put the file processing queue on hold.
Search directories recursively.

Each frame shows extra details like

The queue area shows the current transfer speed and the number of files queued up. It also shows the failed transfers if any and the current transfer progress.
The files area shows the number of files, directories and the size of all the files under the current directory level.

Options for entering custom commands are also present. There is a drop-arrow which gives us access to the last used sites.

Conclusion

If you are watching a YouTube video or a movie and you need to do some important work at the same time, what would you do? You can’t do both at the same time. Or can you? Finding Your Video

Google Social Search is an experimental search tool recently introduced by Google. This tools lets you search for relevant public web content from people in your social circle. For example, I searched for “Google Docs” and got the following results from the web contents published by my contacts.

What the Search Finds

You will notice that this experimental search will show you the contact’s details, connection source (connected via Gmail, Twitter, Friendfeed, YouTube, RSS subscription in Google Reader, etc.), and results from all the web content generated by the contact.

According to Google, the following contacts will appear in your social search result:

People you’re connected to through social services, such as Twitter and FriendFeed, that you’ve listed in your Google profile
Gmail and Gtalk contacts
People in your Friends, Family, and Coworkers contact groups for Google

Apart from these contacts, blogs and feeds from your Google Reader subscriptions will also appear in the social search results.

So, you must create your Google profile and link all your social profiles and other user content generating websites with it.

How To Use Google Social Search

To start using Google Social Search,

Log-in to your Google account.
Create your Google Profile for better results.
Click the “Join this experiment” button on this page.

Once you completed these steps, you can see relevant results from your circle in Google’s search engine results page. If you want to see only social search results, click on the “Show options” link on the result page and then select “Social”.

The Future of Google Social Search

Google Social Search may become your personal search engine in the future. The idea of searching your social circle for a movie review, rather than reading them on other websites is really cool. That’s the best part of Social Search. As Google implements real time data from sites like Twitter in their search results, Social Search will become even more impressive.

Recently we reviewed PHPanywhere, which is a free web based PHP IDE that enables you to develop and maintain your PHP applications online. I got an opportunity to get in touch with the team behind PHPanywhere to answer a few questions about this intriguing application.

Briefly About the PHPanywhere.net, Before the Q & A!

PHPanywhere is a web based free Integrated Development Environment or IDE for the PHP language, in other words it is an application that gives developers all the code editing capabilities they need to develop PHP applications online. It includes a real-time syntax code editor with support for all web formats and a powerful FTP editor.

The Team Behind PHPanywhere

Ivan Burazin is an IT entrepreneur and along with him is his colleague Vedran Jukic who is a Developer. Ivan and Vedran who are based on Split, Croatia launched PHPanywhere.net in September 2008.

Q&A

What is the motivation behind building PHPanywhere?

Well it all started in March 2008 while Vedran was working on a lot of freelance web projects and he found the need to work while away from his office. And so was born the idea behind PHPanywhere – Edit your web sites/applications while away from your computer. Vedran with that thought created the first version for his personal use.

Only later did Vedran bring me on board as the marketing manager and we then offered a new cleaned up version of PHPanywhere to the public, with the goal of becoming the de-facto standard for online web editing.

How is PHPanywhere better compared to other competitive web based code editors?

In our view it’s the best. It’s lightweight, easy to use, easy to learn, and fast. You can literally start coding in no time – just sign up, type in your ftp credentials and start code.

While other editors try to copy your desktop IDE in the browser we have designed an editor that is specifically made for the browser, evading the implementation of complicated features that will slow down or complicate your development online. Further more a lot of others have done what they thought was best whereas PHPanywhere has evolved in the directions that our community (forum, blog, twitter) has guided us.

Because of this I really do believe that we are on our way to become, as I said before the de-facto standard for online editing.

What all have you done in development for building this web application?

We basically did everything from scratch. From planing, coding to designing, except some publicly available libraries it’s more or less its all us.

Are there any other interesting projects you are working on?

Yes of course we have some ideas, but we are currently committed to PHPanywhere; adding new features, getting more users and focusing on making your life easier (in coding at least).

Getting Started with Issuu

To get registered, you must be at least 18 years of age. Once you are registered, there are two publishing options. One is free with restrictions ( your document is restricted to 500 pages and 100mb) and advertising. The other is called Issuu-Pro and its price is $19 per month.

What advantages do you get if you pay? The paid version gets you: free and unlimited upload, perfect display quality, all document formats support, oganization and control of your files, detailed statistics, social networks integration, RSS and friend recommendations.

Start Publishing Online

Once registered, you receive an email to confirm your account. Fortunately, Issuu is simple from the beginning, because there are very clear video tutorials which help the user start working with the software.

After you’ve watched the tutorials, all you have to do to get to publishing is just click on the upload document button. This allows you to upload a document from your computer or a URL. This is what your place at Issuu will look like:

As you can see in the picture, your place at Issuu will be neat and clean. On the right, there is a bookcase where you put the material you like on shelves. This material is organized according to tittle/description, author or date. On the left, you can see a “briefcase” where you keep your documents. You can have as many folders as you consider necessary.

Some other Interesting Options are that you can make your works: public , protected – only those friends selected and authorized by each User may use and access, and private. Private means that your work will not be listed in Google or Issuu. You can allow or not people to download your work. Your publication may be rated by others or not. You can classify the type of work you uploaded into book, article, essay, catalogue, journal, etc. Finally, you can add audio by linking to an audio file (e.g. MP3)

Remember: If you upload unsuitable material for children, you must make it clear.

It is very difficult to stop writing about Issuu because it is a huge virtual space to explore I hope you will enjoy the ride! What do you use to publish your work online?
