Long Island University President Kimberly R. Cline has been appointed as a commissioner of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), a nonprofit accrediting organization that evaluates universities and college campuses to make sure that they meet the standards of “educational quality and institutional integrity.”

Commissioner Chair Susan Looney says that they are “delighted” to welcome in Cline as their newest Commissioner and that she was selected because of her leadership experience and strong commitment to the quality of institutions and peer review for the benefit of students. The appointment is effective as of April 23.

Before becoming the president of Long Island University in July of 2013, Cline was the president of Mercy University, and she served as Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer for the State University of New York. There, she oversaw a $10 billion budget and played a crucial role in the financial planning across the university system. Cline holds degrees such as a Doctor of Educational Administration, a Juris Doctor degree, and a Master of Business Administration.

During Cline’s tenure as LIU’s 10th president, the university says that she has become a recognized leader in education both on and off campus. On campus, she has helped strengthen LIU’s national reputation by expanding academic offers and launching several significant initiatives that have resulted in LIU entering the top 7% of universities in the country for research. Off campus, she has been recognized by the Long Island Press’ Power List and City & State’s Long Island Power 50 for her dedication in positions of leadership.

Temple Beth-El of Great Neck’s Shema magazine won two awards from the Press Club of Long Island chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists at the 2026 PCLI Media Awards competition on Thursday, June 4. The wins bring the publication's total number of accolades from the organization to six over the past several years.

Designer Hallie ArbitalJacoby was awarded second place for Best Magazine Cover Design for the fall 2025 edition, which featured a watercolor of the chapel’s stained-glass windows. Managing Editor Sheri ArbitalJacoby won third place in the Narrative Neighborhood/Community category for “Inspired to Lead.” The article, which appeared in the same issue, profiled congregants who grew up at the temple and became rabbis, cantors and other Jewish professionals.

The cover design award marks the third consecutive year Hallie ArbitalJacoby has been recognized in the category, winning one for each year she designed the magazine. In previous competitions, she won for the fall 2024 and spring 2023 covers. She is currently taking a hiatus from freelance graphic design to focus on building a professional portfolio in strategic communications, design and live events while working full-time and pursuing a master’s degree at Cornell University.

Commenting on the writing award, the contest judge said: “I was indeed ‘inspired’ by the varied voices and stories of each person profiled, heartened to read of such good people and their paths to a profession often ignored in the media. It was also inspiring to see how one temple has generated so many leaders.”

In 2021, Shema won third place in the Best Magazine category for its winter and fall 2020 editions. That honor was awarded to Sheri ArbitalJacoby, Schiff, who served as editor, and Executive Director Stuart Botwinick.

Sheri ArbitalJacoby also won two other 2021 PCLI awards in the Health category for her work in The Well by Northwell, taking first place for "The Immunity Series" and third place for “Plant-Based Eating for Better Family Health.” She previously won two first-place PCLI awards for Best Travel Article and Best Health and Science Reporting in a Magazine.

North Shore University Hospital has become the first hospital on the East Coast to use a newly approved neurostimulation device designed to help critically ill patients come off mechanical ventilators more quickly.

The device, called AeroPace and developed by Pennsylvania-based Lungpacer, was recently used successfully on a patient at the Manhasset hospital. The FDA-approved technology uses neurostimulation to activate and strengthen the diaphragm, the primary muscle responsible for breathing.

Dr. Eric Gottesman, director of intensivist medicine at North Shore University Hospital, said prolonged use of mechanical ventilation can weaken the diaphragm because the ventilator performs much of the work required for breathing.

"When you inhale, more than 90 percent of the work comes from the diaphragm," Gottesman said. "The longer you are on a ventilator – the longer your recovery. Being on a ventilator for an extended period can lead to other medical complications. This innovative device can make an outsized impact on patient outcomes."

The AeroPace system uses a catheter with electrodes placed in either the subclavian artery or internal jugular vein to stimulate the phrenic nerves, causing the diaphragm to contract. The therapy is intended to prevent diaphragm atrophy in patients requiring extended mechanical ventilation.

According to Lungpacer, patients who spend more than 96 hours on a ventilator experienced a 43% faster recovery with the device. Gottesman said studies have shown the technology can reduce time on mechanical ventilation by about three days.

North Shore University Hospital, a Level I trauma center and teaching hospital, treats more than 90,000 patients annually and frequently cares for complex cases requiring advanced life support. Gottesman noted that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the challenges associated with prolonged ventilator use, as many patients struggled to regain independent breathing.

"We're excited to support our ICU leaders in applying the Lungpacer AeroPace device to patients under their care," said Dr. David Hirschwerk, the hospital's chief medical officer. "The goal is to reduce the length of time on the ventilator, which can diminish time in the hospital and improve overall outcomes, particularly for our most vulnerable patients."

Board members noted that the portfolios showcased strong teaching, meaningful relationships and dedication to students.

Interim Superintendent Catherine Fishman delivered a personal address, noting that her own daughter received tenure this year in another district.

"Tonight, I am not only looking at this through the eyes of a superintendent; I'm also looking at it through the eyes of a mother, and I know what this moment means," Fishman said. "In Mineola, tenure is earned. Our teachers do more than simply complete a probationary period. They are coached, they attend workshops, they try new instructional strategies, they reflect on their practices and they take risks. They show that they are not only capable teachers but also lifelong learners."

Fishman emphasized that tenure represents a long-term commitment between educators and the community.

"By the time teachers receive tenure in Mineola, we know that the teacher has become a part of who we are, part of our culture, part of our promise to students and families," Fishman said. "It means we have educators who have chosen to invest their talents, their energy and their hearts in this district, and it means Mineola has chosen to invest in them right back."

The celebration concluded with a tribute video featuring students sharing personal stories about how each educator has supported, inspired and guided them throughout their academic journeys.
