The Everyday Resolution ... [ 360 New Year's Post ]

The New Year is often equated with new beginnings and the execution of resolutions that have been merely considered yet not acted upon in the year or years prior. Why though? Why are fresh starts so often affiliated with benchmark time frames in our lives instead of living out our life strategies each day they are thought of?

I initially started by treating my birthday as a new year celebration of gaining a fresh start then I realized I was only substituting my New Year's resolution addiction. Then a trail of painful and difficult losses in various forms made me realize that each day a fresh idea enters my mind should become an immediate resolution.

It has been a wild continuous ride the past three years; however I feel like I am finally accepting living each day to the best possible without waiting on a certain time to come, for that certain individual to accept my thoughts, for that certain amount of money to come into my possession, or that certain ideal to come into fruition. This change of thought has not led to a perfect life [far from it]; however I wake up and rest without carrying the familiar feeling of regret that I should of acted on my thoughts sooner.You realize how valuable it is to act on resolutions when you truly understand the lack of a guarantee for your independence or existence beyond the right now.

With that being said my friends, I hope the transition into this New physical Year has made you consider adopting an everyday resolution philosophy as well. May you achieve all that you aspire to and beyond.

Paris, France 1 Week Birthday Vacation - Day 4 Recap [ Arc de Triomphe / Champs Elysées / Tour Eiffel / La Seine ]

All throughout Paris was the Nike "I Run Paris" advertisements and that is what my friends and I quite literally did in order to see everything we wanted to see within a 1 week span. Our Day 4 itinerary was to see the Arc de Triomphe via walking up Champs Elysées, check out the Eiffel Tower by day [I ended up walking 2 levels up the tower], and taking a boat ride down La Seine.

The moment that we got above the Metro station we were in front of a row of perfectly trimmed tries that provided a clear view up Champs Elysées to the Arc. Champs Elysées is the equivalency of walking down 5th Avenue here in New York City due to the row of high-end stores and venues that line both sides of the street. Louis Vuitton, Swarovski, LIDO, and Milady to name a few. We even passed a Virgin Megastore reminiscent of the former Times Square location that was playing Michael Jackson's Remember The Time on a row of flat screens facing the street. Like that of New York City though, we unfortunately also witnessed consumers leisurely stepping around a homeless woman in the middle of the sidewalk kneeling humbly on the ground for any coin that could be spared. Each of us continued forward thereafter and arrived at the Arc de Triomphe monument to fallen heroes. [All Pictured Below]

Natasha, Mikaela, and I then hopped back on the Metro and went to the Eiffel Tower by day. Vendors line the street leading up to the Eiffel Tower in hopes of selling trinkets to tourists. I was taking a picture of Mikaela in front of the Tower upon are arrival when Natasha yelled "there running". We all turned to the left and there were dozens of vendors running towards the stairs leading down towards La Seine while Natasha was getting it all on tape. That truly explained why all of the vendors have their trinkets on a giant ring or on a blanket [so that they can pull it up quickly and run if cops chase them with their bikes]. It was absolutely hilarious. I will let you guys know when she posts the video for the public. After that comic relief, the ladies and I walked under the Tower and noticed the low rate for admission tickets to walk up the stairs 2 levels. I decided I'd walk, especially since I was only eligible for a youth discount 1 more day [Parisian Youth are considered 18-24]. The walk was beautiful, even though I am pretty sure that I am the first American to walk the Tower in a leather mini skirt, cropped booties, a t-shirt, and blazer. I met workers who work on the inner framework of the Tower, a group of guys from Austria while walking up, and conversed with a set of young women from Germany [1 came to help her friend relocate who had attended Grad school in Paris]. The view from Level 1 and 2 provided breathtaking angles of the Parisian skyline. The landscape was so great it almost made me forget I walked dozens of flights of stairs to achieve that feat. Paris, France 1 Week Birthday Vacation - Day 3 [ Les Puces / Louvre / Notre Dame ]

After our Night 2 of exploration, the ladies and I mapped out a full day for Sunday inclusive of Les Puces de Saint-Ouen [The most famous flea market in Paris at Porte de Clignancourt], Day Trip to Musée du Louvre, followed by Notre Dame de Paris.

For the first time during our trip, we woke up in enough time to have breakfast and make it out of the hotel in the AM. Speaking of which, none of us will ever look at chocolate croissants the same way ever again. Those became an instant breakfast staple. After indulging we headed straight for the train station.

The site Paris Perfect recommended going to the markets prior to noon due to the fact that Les Puces is located in the 18th arrondissement, which becomes very crowded in the afternoon so we took heed. I am glad that we did because we arrived early enough to walk through the general vendor area without competing with crowds or ignoring leagues of hawkers. The market is interesting to navigate because it is not merely in one area. The market consists of a series of outdoor and indoor vendors across the span of 7 hectares.

My friends and I explored the general outdoor flea area for trinkets then walked to Marché Vernaison, 99 rue des Rosiers on the right side of the street. The general market is a great location to find keepsakes that distinctly scream I was in Paris from subtle pieces like Vintage prints up to select tourist pieces such as deconstructed miniature Eiffel Towers. Each of us acquired a variety of Parisian prints for ourselves and to gift. Natasha and I tried to negotiate a low price for 2 hookah sets at one vendor for 20 Euro and was denied only to find the same hookahs a few vendors down for 10 Euro each so it was a win win scenario. We also took the opportunity to view the accessories and bags available at 1 or 2 quality leather vendors in the area as well before venturing to rue des Rosiers.

Marché Vernaison is a winding antique and vintage market that we found by walking into a marked alleyway along the rue. The paintings, textiles, antiques, and vintage clothing are captivating. I fell in love with a make shift small gallery that had a painting of a woman's silhouette formed by a plume of smoke coming from a clear ash tray on top of a philosophy book on display. I also looked in wonder at the stunning silk dresses in one shop that was over 20 years my senior. The pricing was not in my budget; however it was more than appropriate for the items housed within those alleyways. I'd recommend this segment of the market whether able to shop there or not solely to experience the quality present. [Vernaison Pictured Below]

We made a quick savory crepe run for lunch then went to the Louvre. The Dollar to Euro ratio is pretty interesting so it is beautiful to say that the Louvre has Free admission on Sundays. We had previously had the opportunity to see the outside are of the museum the night before and it was even the more stunning by day. We encountered art work in the train station before even getting above ground. Then as approach the stairs to exit, we see a condom vending machine on the wall. The machines appear to be located at all of the major stations throughout central Paris."Paris is for lovers". Our cameras worked overtime from the very moment we stepped above ground. Inside and Out of Musée du Louvre as well as the surrounding area is absolutely breathtaking. The history encompassed immediately challenges you to re-live and gain clarity. No wonder the line for entry rivaled that of any concert I have ever attended. I am going to let the pictures speak for this visit from beginning to end. [Pictured Below]

From the fascinating Louvre stop, we then ventured back to the Metro to go to the Notre Dame Cathedral as our last stop before the end of the eve. A unique presence is felt when you are near and within the Cathedral that is beyond description. [Images Enclosed]

Paris, France 1 Week Birthday Vacation - Day 2 Recap + Pictures & Recommendations

After our late night on Day 1, we woke up on Day 2 in the early afternoon prepared to stay out throughout the day until the highly anticipated "Nuit Blanche [White Night]".

Unfortunately we missed breakfast so we walked down the Avenue to seek out a nice Saturday brunch. Along Avenue de France, we came across DuPont Cafe. The cafe had an interesting modern decor with red, yellow, and white hues throughout. You walk in past a strategically placed Foosball table in the center of the restaurant near the bar towards a plaid leather tufted couch alongside a red bookcase [pictured below].

Upon becoming situated, we ordered a round of fresh juices and brunch. I ordered a salmon bagel with salad, Natasha ordered a lasagna with salad, and Mikaela had fries. I took some time to go through the restaurants book collection while we waited on our orders. The bookcase housed French novels, Japanese literature, New York: The City That Never Sleeps, an Audrey Hepburn Biography, and everything in between [pictured below].

Upon grabbing the Audrey Hepburn book, our food arrived. It was absolutely delicious and a must go if you are ever in the Bibliothèque vicinity around brunch time. We were served by a young female waitress who appeared around our age so we asked her where she would recommend shopping and she directed us to go above ground at Châtelet. This came as a pleasant surprise since the train station for Châtelet is only a few stops away and a major transfer hub so we decided to go. While our waitress was talking to us, we noticed that a weird man was camped out on a bench towards the middle of the street staring through the restaurant window at us. We had noticed him pacing in front of the window earlier but thought he left. We were wrong. We waited until we walked away briefly and made a mad dash for the train station at top speed. Each of us made it past the turnstile safe and sound. Therefore, first and foremost wear comfortable shoes when venturing through a foreign country because you never know when you are going to have to break out into a sprint. Secondly, don't hesitate to ask familiar locals where they go to in their downtime.

The ladies and I took the train to Châtelet. Rue de Rivoli right above the Châtelet Metro is lined with boutiques, commercial retail stores, and familiar chain stores as well [Pictured Below].

Thankfully a variety of those stores had sales, including a large department store called Etam. We each stocked up with signature items that we felt we could not come back to America without and then some. I.E. Natasha's earth tone hooded cape, Mikaela's Avenue des Champs-Elysées tank, and my accented military jacket. [Candid Shopping Images Below]

We finished up our first round of shopping to make it back to the hotel to drop off the many bags we accumulated.

On to the anticipated Nuit Blanche. Nuit Blanche also known as White Night is a night in Paris where there are a variety of art installations and independent museums open throughout the city late night, therefore all train stations stay open an extra hour until 2AM and the 14 metro line remains open all night long. We had an interesting dining experience in Montparnasse followed by an explorative walk that started at Musée d'Orsay and ended on the other side of La Seine beyond Palais Royal Musée du Louvre. It was a beautiful journey that ended with 3 cups of hot chocolate in cafe near the Music Academy followed by long train ride to the hotel [Nuit Pictures Enclosed Below *Please note that the major museums are not open overnight*]

Paris, France 1 Week Birthday Vacation - Day 1 Recap + Pictures & Recommendations

After being in the works for months, two of my friends and I planned a one week vacation to Paris to coincide with the week of my birthday. Each day managed to be an adventure so I decided to share the details of the trip on a day by day basis. Day 1 was inclusive of exploring the area of Gd Bibliothèque (while looking for a converter), becoming familiar with the local lounge, then heading to see & dine near the infamous Eiffel Tower by night.

We arrived in Paris around 6 in the morning Parisian time 1October2010. The 3 of us had carry-ons so we were able to bypass baggage check and head straight to the Metro, which brings me to my first recommendation. Carry a carry-on regulation size suitcase, large pocketbook, and umbrella if you are venturing to Paris for less then a week. That way you don't have to waist time checking a bag or seeking it out on the tedious baggage check wheel upon arrival. Do not get me wrong, taking a carry-on each in the Fall for Paris for 3 women is a difficult feat but we made it happen. We dragged our bags through the airport to the shuttle train on these modern ramps enclosed in architecturally savvy clear tunnels [pictured below].

We then took the shuttle train to the Metro station. The very first thing we looked into were per ride rates versus unlimited day passes. The rate for the unlimited 5 day pass was merely 43 Euro instead of paying close to 2 Euro every time we want to hop on a train. It may seem costly; however I guarantee you that you will take the train well over 4 times a day during your trip to a city that offers so many things to do. Therefore, we chose the unlimited pass each and I would highly recommend that option to you as well since it pays for itself over the course of your adventure. Definitely grab a metro map though because it will become a permanent staple. My first genius moment of the trip was rubbing the back strip of the pass on the turnstile instead of putting it inside as if it was a magnetic strip. Once I got over my tourist error, we each walked passed the doors and took the B train to the 14 Train, which took us directly to Bibliothèque. The letter trains in Paris remind me of NJ Transit due to the scenic view points and relatively local station arrangements while the number trains remind me of MTA express number lines due to the modern stations, express stops, and quick schedules.

The moment we got above ground at Bibliothèque we were among office and residential buildings, quaint street architecture, boutique bakeries, a neighborhood lounge, and a number of commercial storefronts visible from Rue de Tolbiac and Avenue de France. We had been up for close to 16 hours straight at this point so our mission was to check in, locate breakfast, then get some rest. My friends were too tired to eat so I went out on Tolbiac to find a good quiche. Luckily La Grignote at the corner just pulled a few croissants and quiche lorraine's out of the oven [pictured below].

I highly recommend La Grignote since they made the best Quiche Lorraine I ever had and the owner's were the friendliest couple I have ever encountered. I took the quiche back to the hotel and we all rested up to enjoy the rest of our first day in Paris.

After getting some much needed rest, we all went to get converters and explore our new local neighborhood. We found converters at a local electronics store then decided to have an impromptu street shoot along one of the side streets [pictures of each of us below (from top to bottom - Mikaela, Natasha, Lisa Marie)]

Curiosity settled in regarding the local lounge after I went to La Grignote once again [for Flan though], so Mikaela and I went for a quick break at Frog Tolbiac [The Frog & British Library][Pictured Below]

Frog Tolbiac is a quaint lounge with vintage chairs and cafe tables alongside brown leather couches and cozy booths that plays an eclectic American/French blend of R&B, hip hop, alternative, and rock music. We listened to everything from Lenny Kravitz to Earth, Wind, & Fire while drinking happy hour cocktails and dinning on bar food. It has a mellow scene full of a young after-work crowd and college students that I'd definitely recommend to any young or young at heart traveler.

Afterward, we all linked back up at the hotel to dress up and hop on the train to have dinner near the Eiffel Tower at night. From the moment the train nears the station, you can see the tower in all her beauty. Though it was a rainy evening, words can not compare how stunning the tower was as we walked closer. You become so memorized that the vendors echoing practiced yet comical hello's to you become a blur. We each began to take out our camera's when the tower immediately lit up in a sea of flickering lights [pictured below].

We took tons of pictures of the majestic tower from every angle imaginable then I ventured across the street from the Tower to take a picture of the Seine river at night [pictured below].

With camera's now tucked away and umbrella's high, we walked to Le Pont de Seine, which is a divine restaurant not to far away from the tower. Mikaela recommended having mulled wine as a beverage so we both ordered one while Natasha had a fruit nectar cocktail [as a replacement to her strong Mojito, which seems to be very popular in Paris]. I loved the mulled wine. It is warm Bordeaux with a touch of ground cinnamon. For the dinner segment I had Veal Milanese while the ladies also had 2 dinner platters. The restaurant definitely gave tasty yet ample servings that I would highly recommend [Pictures of us at the table below].

The food was so delicious that all we could think about was sleep so we ventured straight back to the hotel to turn in for the night. A word to the wise, please know that all trains stop running at 1AM on the dot. We found this out the almost hard way because we left the restaurant a quarter after 12 and the station was prepping for closure. Thankfully, we made it on both of our needed trains to get back to the hotel. All and All, a successful Day 1. [Next Post -> Day 2]

One of my favorite parts is when Cee-Lo soulfully sings "Yeah I'm sorry, i can't afford a ferrari, But that don't mean i can't get you there. [Pre Finale Highlight Gallery] Abdi Farah "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" is my favorite to win The Brooklyn Museum Exhibit

As many of you know, I write a monthly post entitled Night at the Museum which covers my favorite exhibits in Brooklyn Museum. My most recent coverage has been on the current Andy Warhol exhibit and the American High Fashion exhibit. Hopefully the next write up will be on the up and coming contemporary artist Abdi Farah. After 9 interesting episodes of the 1st season of "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist", I am convinced that the artist Abdi should win the coveted exhibit at The Brooklyn Museum as well as the $10,000 prize during the season finale. The final episode is scheduled to air tomorrow 11Aug2010 at 10PM EST on BRAVO.

I believe that Abdi should win because each work of art illustrates a unique storyline that forces you to read between the strokes, it also manages to showcase his progression and growth as an individual which is the embodiment of a true artist. The work that moved me most is the piece that he created in episode 9 entitled "Baptism". The challenge was to create a work of art inspired by nature. Reflecting in front of water in the nature reserve inspired Abdi to sketch an elevated image of himself using dark stones. During elimination, he explained that the water was an awakening to his spirit and to him as an artist similar to that of a baptism. Upon viewing "Baptism", I wanted to see some of Abdi's earlier work prior to so that it can shine light on his artistic roots. I am thankful that BRAVO posted the image of a stirring piece he did in 2006 entitled "Slaveship". In addition to an image of that work being enclosed with his official website and contact information, I have enclosed images of the works that I've considered favorites throughout the season. Enjoy and hopefully we will get to view his body of work in the museum soon.
