It’s always good practice to have good anchor text variation just to make thing look more natural. It also helps avoid any automatic filters that might drop the page/site back 50/100 places in the results.
Over the past while I’m increasingly seeing this as a major factor in building links into sites. Looking at a number of markets I’m seeing a definite correlation for having really good anchor text variation and how pages/sites are ranking.
Because of all the changes in the past few months in the search results when you start to analysis things you can see that site with a good mix of anchor text are really benefiting.
Mixing anchor text with brand name, target terms and random text is what you need to work on at all times. The more natural it looks the better.

]]>I get asked by a lot of people to take a look at their business websites to see if I can improve rankings. To be honest I’ll sometimes turned this work down for a number of reasons. I know it’s not easy in this current economic climate but if you are trying to build an online business you need to be passionate about it. This is the problem with many off-line businesses trying to get customers online they simply don’t have the time or willingness to ensure that their websites are kept up to date and contain information and content on them to help attract customers.
I’ll say it all the time that content on your website is absolutely important and vital to ensure that search engines can find it. For example recently I was approached by an E. commerce website and they wanted me to help them get more traffic. All of the content of their product pages was simply from the manufacturers website. They had about 100 different products and they could not understand why they were only getting a handful of visits per day from the search engine’s. The main reason for this is that they put no effort into rewriting the content for these products and informing customers in their own words what they were trying to sell.
Getting traffic to an e-commerce website is not that difficult if you take the time to write about this particular product you are trying to sell. Simply copying and pasting the manufacturers description is not going to work. It may work short-term but, in the long-term you’re traffic will disappear.
If you are considering setting up an e-commerce website to sell products you need to ensure when you are planning this that you need to incorporate content and rewrite as many pages as possible. I have done this in the past where I have taken a website to over 1 million visitors a year by simply writing informative product information. Yes it takes work and to beginning but as you add new products it becomes much easier to write. In the end this is exactly what your customers are looking for we are not really writing the content for search engines we are writing the content so that your customers can have a better understanding of the product you are selling. It’s important to keep the customer to the forefront of any writing you are doing. If they are going to come to your website they want to know as much detail on what you are selling as you can get them. It can help to also give them advantages and disadvantages of the product you are selling. Being informative will help them make a decision.

]]>I’ve always been a firm believer that content on your website is absolutely key. But, this is where many websites whether they are small or large fall down. The fact is that search engines have become more intelligent and how they read your content. Many years ago it was easy to manipulate this to enable you to gain high rankings and of course many people did.
Nowadays it’s important to theme your content so that it is relevant and not simply stuffed with keywords that you are trying to rank for. The way I write content is to ensure that there are many relevant phrases (or themed phrases) in this to ensure that your content reads well. The likes of Google who account for probably 90% of the Internet traffic in Ireland use something called Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) this is used to read your content on your page and associates words that are often used in the same context for example “apple” and “computers”
Let me give you a quick example of what I mean. If you had a website that talks about Cars and you wanted to specifically write an article about Jeep Tyres what words do you think would be associated with this.

Car
Michelin
These are words I just thought of off the top of my head. Now the reality is you need to do a little bit more analysis of the top ranking pages to ensure you are incorporating more of the words associated with buying tyres for your Jeep.
Using some software to analyze the top 10 results can bring up some interesting words that are found on almost all of the pages. The idea behind this is to ensure that the words that you are using on your pages are also used in the top pages of Google. Let’s have a look at the words I found by using some software that we have developed to help analyze the top 10 results.
buy, car, categories, cherokee, control, fact, help, hole, hot, jeep, land, machine, man, manufacturer, men, message, motor, online, product, products, real, rear, rope, search, size, sizes, spare, time, tire, tires, truck, tyre, tyres, unit, vehicle, year
it’s surprising that the majority of these words are used on 5 website or more ranking in the top 10 in the world. I bet some of these you would not even think of but generally if you’re writing about a subject that you are passionate about you would probably use most of them anyway and real idea of analyzing content like this is to ensure that you simply include these words in your content after you have written it.
It’s interesting I have many pages of content on the Internet that will receive traffic from the long tail keywords that you would never think of simply because I’m using themed keywords within that content.
I think over the next couple of weeks I’ll expand on this idea and maybe get more examples of how some companies could simply improve their themed words on their pages which in the long term with increased traffic to their websites.

]]>There are many companies out there that will offer pay for performance or PFP or also PPC ads. Basically, if you are willing to pay you can have your website shown at the top of the Google results. This is done using Google performance advertising also called Adwords.
You could simply just go to Google and type in any keyword and perform a search you will see these advertisements under “sponsored links” these are paid links that can help get you traffic quickie bu use pay for every single click.
There are a number of different types of pay for performance services
PPC – Payperclick -generally, this is associated with Yahoo search marketing and Google Adwords. Essentially you pay them for every visitor they send you it basically comes down to costs per click and there are many export companies out there that specialize in this area. It’s not something I personally do but it’s definitely something you need to try to see how your site performs when the top of the search engine. Your main plan should be to also run on SEO campaign to get your website listed in the organic results where you will pick up similar traffic without incurring the costs per click.
Paid inclusion – these are websites where you pay to be included. They are generally big directories like Yahoo directory where you can get listed in your specific niche.
Paid sponsorship – there are not many search engines as we use here in Ireland to use is but basically this involves the advertiser paying a flat fee to a search engine which will allow their advertisements to appear alongside and the search results. If your market is outside Ireland their search engines like Exactseek that offer this service.
Over the next couple of weeks I will go into more detail about the various SEO services that are available to help create a campaign for you that is highly effective.

This is a good question and to be honest it really depends on the amount of SEO work that is required. Some websites simply need a few tweaks to help them to rank higher for their specific key phrases. Others require a lot more work so it can be difficult to put an exact figure on its until I see the website and speak to you about your requirements.
Of course it’s understandable to try and find out how much it’s going to cost and generally prices range from €250 – €700 per month. Some websites can rank very quickly and others which are in competitive markets can take a little bit longer.
This is just a rough idea and realistically you would want to contact me so you can get a more accurate quotation.
I’m sure you are well aware that ranking your website high in the search engine can make a big difference to your business and can really help to increase profitability by generating sales and leads.

]]>It’s important to try and understand how search engine optimisation works with the search engines. You need to try and understand what the relationship is between them, we know that they are the most popular tools that people use in order to find services and also find information on products and purchase them.
It is generally known that search engines will receive 400 million different queries every single day (on average) and that most people that use them will use key phrases (keywords) which will normally consist of 2-5 words.
The search engines will try and give you the most relevant results for any particular search query. Search engine optimisation is used to ensure that the structure of your website is targeted towards these keywords that are for your specific niche.
One thing that you really need to understand is that most search queries will not go past the first tree pages (30 positions) obviously the closer you are to the top position them more traffic you will receive.
The top search engine here in Ireland is Google but you will still get traffic from Yahoo and Bing and these 3 search engines probably receive around 97% of Internet traffic in Ireland. When choosing an SEO you need to ensure that they are following the guidelines of these particular search engines to ensure the service they offer is sticking to the best practices and guidelines from the search engines.
There are many things you can do to ensure that your website is positioned to help get some of this traffic. Over the next couple of weeks we will talk about on page content, basic things like title tags, meta-keywords, meta-descriptions, site structure and most importantly content on your pages.
It’s also important to know how to market your business online and this is done through building links from relevant websites with the appropriate anchor text (or a variant of this anchor text). We’ll go into more detail about this over the next couple of weeks to give you an understanding of how this works.

Anchor Text – to link back to your website should have hypertext which are keywords inserted. It’s important that these keywords vary.
The main aim is to get as many quality links as possible. Most people will link directly back to their home page. But, you must also consider other pages on your website that may also be optimized for the keywords that can still get you traffic.
