How long has it been since I last went food hunting? I almost don’t remember. Nevertheless I do still keep an eye out for new food places popping up in Penang. And one of the new places I’ve noticed is Queensbay Mall’s new ‘food area’ – Queens Street, which is supposed to showcase international cuisines.

Kurtos Spiroll @ Queensbay Mall

And tucked in a corner of the new Queens Street at Level 3 of Queensbay Mall (this is where the old Kamay furniture store used to be) is Kurtos Spiroll. Definitely foreign sounding. But don’t let the weird name deter you. Kurtos Spiroll offers a Hungarian pastry – also known as Chimney cake. It is called a ‘chimney cake’ because once baked steam rises up from the cake much like a chimney.

Kurtos Spiroll is not a franchise at the moment, its started by local Malaysians who saw Kürt?skalács being made on TV and found it interesting. They then decided to do more research and finally brought in this unique pastry to Malaysia!

Kurtos Spiroll counter

A Kurtos starts with a carefully prepared dough. And it is essentially a yeast based dough rolled onto a specially imported wooden skewer, and left for 2 more stages of fermentation before being baked in a wooden spit over an open fire (but in the case of Kurtos Spiroll, they’re baked in a special oven)

The baking is relatively quick, just a few minutes and don’t let the small oven fool you, it’s really really hot!

The result is a sweet, “crispy on the outside, soft in the inside” pastry. Best eaten hot for maximum yumminess.

Kurtos Spiroll offers a variety of ‘toppings’ which are slathered on the outer rim. Or you can also opt for the ‘Original Hungarian’ and pair it with the 3 different home made dips - Garlic Cheese, Butterscotch or Chocolate.

Although I really enjoyed all 3 dips, the one that I liked the most was the Garlic Cheese. Mainly because it pairs really well with the slightly sweet Kurtos kalacs, giving it a salty sweet taste. The garlic taste was not too overpowering as well.

I also chose to try the premium flavour (and best seller) – Nutella Walnut (because I am a chocoholic at heart who can never quite say no to Nutella!)

Premium Chicken Floss Kurtos Kalacs in the making

Going on the same principle of salty sweet, I also chose to try the Premium Chicken Floss. This was also a winner in my books.

There are also other ‘toppings’ available ranging from Coconut Flakes, Sunflower Seeds, Cinnamon, Sesame Seeds to Peanut Butter Chocolate Chips (this sounds to die for, but since I’ve already had THREE of them I think it would be best to save that for another day…)

And finally here’s a lil tip on how to eat a Kurtos…

Overall I did enjoy the Kurtos kalacs. I had initially thought it would taste like a pretzel, but I find that its lighter and not as dense or chewy. Makes a good snack when you’re feeling peckish. My pick would be the Original Hungarian with Garlic Cheese dip (in the end I found the Nutella Walnut a bit too sweet for my liking – horrors! can it be true that I actually picked something else over Nutella?? lol) But do give it a go and see which one suits your tastes buds better.

I would like to go back and try the Sesame Seed and the Peanut Butter choc chip (or I could perhaps persuade the very nice Kurtos Spiroll people to make me one with Peanut Butter and Nutella! Now that would be AWESOME!) hehe

Kurtos Spiroll is located at Level 3, North Zone, Queens Street, Queensbay Mall (next to Seoul Garden & Habanero)

I am well aware that lingzie.com is primarily a food blog, but I do have other interests aside from food. And currently am toying with the idea of blogging about other things besides food (on fashion maybe? ) But we shall see how it goes as I do think that my blog should evolve with me.

So here to kick start my ‘diversification’ of lingzie.com is with a blog post about *ahem* lingerie!!

When I received the invitation to attend Wacoal’s launch of their new Autumn/Winter collection – Salute, I was ecstatic! Since I am currently wearing Wacoal bras, I thought it would be great to check out what the new collection had to offer.

The new collection is aptly named Salute – a celebration of femme vitality, a gesture of respect to women. It showcases European flair lingerie but tailored for the Asian woman. The Wacoal Salute’s usage of lace and ornate accessories results in a line of lingerie that is indulgent, opulent and luxurious, tailored for the cosmopolitan sophisticated woman! Perfect gift for the upcoming Christmas & New Year dontcha think?

The Wacoal Salute Autumn/Winter 2012 Showcase was held at Parkson, Gurney Plaza (it’s an exclusive event for Parkson Elite Card Members) And guests received cash vouchers off the new Salute line as well as the Magic X line.

The Wacoal Salute lingerie… so pretty! Very lush and romantic with all the floral elements and lace. I like!

Some of the lingerie designs that caught my eye… these being my favourites!

Before the start of the fashion show, guests were treated to light refreshments catered by Little Cottage 2.

The dress code for the night was Glamour Gold/Black. And this was my outfit for the night… Dress from Dorothy Perkins, Necklace from Rare & Bare Fashion (and yes I need to get my roots colored! )

The runway… guests were right next to the runway so we could really see the lingerie up close!

And the fashion show begins!

I really liked how the lingerie were all modelled with cute tutu skirts, lace gloves and lots of floral elements. Romantic and sexy!

Being a lover of cheese, I jumped at the opportunity to try out G Hotel’s latest promotion – A Cheese & Wine night which happens every 2nd Thursday of the month.

Upon arrival at Malaysia’s Most Stylish Address, I was ushered to their G Lounge where a lovely spread of cheese and accompanying snacks lay waiting.

The Cheese & Wine promotion is priced at RM70++ which includes two glasses of wine (your choice of red or white) and free flow of international cheese selections. Also included are accompanying snacks such as French Baguette, cheese crackers, grapes, prunes, apricots, olives, vegetable crudites and various nuts (almonds and walnuts). On my visit, there were 6 different types of cheeses - Gouda, Cheddar, Parmesan, Brie, Emmental and Camembert.

Brie and Camembert both originate from France, and they are both soft cow’s cheese. And they do look rather similar. Both are soft, creamy and rich with subtle differences to their taste, being that Camembert has a much stronger flavour and odor. I personally prefer the Brie

Meanwhile the Cheddar cheese originates from England and is a relatively hard pale yellow cheese. The Gouda is a semi hard cheese made from cow’s milk but I didn’t really like it for it had a slight bitterness. Perhaps my palate had yet to adapt to the taste.

I enjoyed the Swiss Cheese – Emmental with its creamy nutty flavour. And finally there is also perhaps the most recognizable cheese to us non cheese connoisseurs would be the Parmesan cheese, for this is the cheese that pops up on pizzas and pastas.

My plate of cheese and snacks (one of many… )

I found the environment to be very relaxing at the lounge, perfect to unwind after a hard day’s work. It is also a great premise for entertaining important clients.

G Hotel’s Cheese & Wine Promotion (photo from the hotel)

Every 2nd Thursday of the month 7pm-9pm (Upcoming dates: 13 September 2012 and 11 October 2012)

RM70++ for Two glasses of wine (red or white) and free flow International cheese selections and accompanying snacks

After our Cheese & Wine session, we headed up to GSpot (Level 1) for some music and drinks. And got a chance to hear the amazing Kate Bowen from Canada – G Hotel’s new Jazz Singer (for August – October 2012). She oozed charm and allure during her performance. And her voice! Her voice was sultry and sensual… definitely worth catching her performances!

Kate Bowen performs daily at Gspot from August-October 2012 (except Wednesdays) Sun-Thurs from 9.30pm, Fri & Sat from 10.30pm

BeerBQ Bistro at Precinct 10 (located just next to Island Plaza) brings a unique concept to the Penang dining scene – pairing beers with food. Intrigued?

BeerBQ Bistro has a cozy ambience with high ceilings, and a small upstairs corner which is just perfect for private parties

Most of the food here is cooked with Beer to add flavour since beer is brewed from malted cereal grains like barley and flavoured with hops. I must admit that I’m not a big fan of beer, having only tried the more common beers available here like Carlsberg and Tiger. But there are a lot more Beer options available here at BeerBQ Bistro with beers from Germany,Belgium and more, so I think I’m bound to find something I like?

We kicked things off with an appetizer (beer free one ) – the Smoked Salmon Salad (RM19.90). Thick juicy slices of smoked salmon rolled around a celery stick, served with a delicious homemade cheese sauce. The salad on the side has a vinaigrette with a surprising fruity and tangy twist which was most lovely. Suggested beer pairing for this appetizer is Budweiser.

Another appetizer we got to try was the Roast Pork (RM16.90) to be paired with another pale lager – Stella Artois. The roast pork was pretty decent, crispy skin and flavourful. And I quite like the Stella Artois, I find it not too bitter with a bit of sweet aftertaste

Next, we moved on to the mains…. we tried their BeerBQ Pork Burger (RM21.90) It’s quite hard to find pork burgers in Penang, but it seems to be slowly but surely making its presence in the Penang food scene. BeerBQ’s pork burger came looking very impressive. And I must say it tasted really good! The pork burger patty was nice and thick and juicy, with some bite to it. Plus it’s served with a flavourful hickory barbeque sauce and topped with gooey cheese. A definite must try!

Next, we tried the BeerBQ Pork Ribs (RM38.90) The pork ribs were well marinated and juicy, with the meat falling off easily from the bone. I liked their homemade barbeque sauce which was not too tangy. The amount of sauce coating the pork ribs were also the right proportion, to my liking. Suggested beer pairing for the Pork Ribs is a dark lager from Germany - Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel. And I must say this was one of my favourite beers so far!

BeerBQ also serves a beer battered Fish & Chips (RM21.90) served with tartar sauce and malt vinegar. To be paired with Hoegarden. I liked that that batter was nice and crispy but would have preferred a ‘meatier’ fish with more mouth feel.

Next up was another favourite dish of mine – the BeerBQ Seafood Platter (RM40.90) to be paired with Lowenbrau. Now it may look a bit messy, all covered in sauce… but it’s a good thing! Because the sauce is ah-ma-zing!!! Although it’s also a barbeque sauce but it’s different from the one used on the Pork Ribs. This sauce tastes richer (more buttery maybe?) and has a more distinct garlic taste. It goes really well with the platter of prawns, scallops, mussels and squids. I also like that this seafood platter offers something a bit different from the usual fried seafood platter. Oh, and underneath all the seafood is a generous portion of creamy mash potatoes!

BeerBQ also has a pretty decent Spaghetti Vongole (RM18.90) cooked with white wine. I’ve had this dish twice and I must say that the first time was rather disappointing. The second time round was much more improved as the dish had better. cleaner flavours.

Finally it’s time for dessert! And their signature dessert is the Stout Cake – a moist chocolate cake spiked with Guiness Stout. Served warm, with a dollop of whipped cream.

Other than beer, BeerBQ also serves up Beer Cocktails. And we got the chance to try a really unique beer cocktail – Chilli Beer (RM22.90) The Chilli beer is made with a dash of tabasco sauce, black pepper and cili padi! Yes you read that right – cili padi! It’s definitely one fiery drink! You can really smell the fragrant bird’s eye chilli before you drink the beer, and it’s got a hot burning aftertaste. Not a drink for the faint hearted!

Another cocktail is the Blue Ocean (RM22.90) – beer with blue curacao with some lemon.

For non beer drinkers, fret not, they do have a selection of juices and mocktails. We tried the BeerBQ Triple (RM9.90) – a combination of pineapple, orange and apples.

The owners of Morganfield’s spared little expense on creating a rustic ‘industrial’ look for the outlet. And I must say that it has certainly paid off.

My favourite seat in the house! Love the wooden feature wall. This particular outlet uses recycled wood that’s 40-60years old.

The bar…. the zinc wall adds on to Morganfield’s ‘industrial’ look

The beautiful outdoor seating area, overlooking Gurney Paragon’s St Jo’s

Also at the Alfresco dining area is this unique looking table, specially designed by Morganfield’s to make it easier for them to change up the seating arrangements.

Ok, Ok, now before you wonder if this post is gonna feature any food…. yes it is! (will show you more photos of the beautiful place after that )

Various drinks we tried on that day – Ice Cold Lemonade – a refreshing drink of fresh lemons and soda (RM9.90), Virgin Apple Mojito made with fresh apples, limes and mint leaves (RM13.90), Mango & Lime Lassi made with mango puree, yoghurt, lime and lemon (RM14.90) and the very interesting Lipstick – a blend of strawberry banana and cream of coconut (RM14.90). I loved my Ice Cold Lemonade – simple yet refreshing especially on a hot day!

To kick start our meal, we had the opportunity to try some appetizers, the first of which being the Sauteed Mushrooms (RM14.90) I was very pleased to find that its made up of Eryngii Mushrooms! The mushrooms were buttery, juicy and fragrant with a hint of smokiness. Garnished with some parmesan cheese, this was near perfection.

Next up was the Pork Sausage Platter (RM32.90) – four different sausages including a Spicy Hungarian, Cheese sausage, German Bratwurst and Smoked sausage. I particularly liked the Smoked sausage and Cheese sausage. The platter comes with a side of coleslaw (cold and crunchy!) with two dipping sauces – Dijon mustard and house Garlic Aioli. I adore the Garlic Aioli sauce. It is rich, creamy and garlicky and pairs really well with the sausages. With a bit of heat from the mustard to cut through the richness of the garlic aioli and the saltiness from the sausages – indeed a perfect bite!

Next appetizer was the Chicken Wings (RM16.90) with a smoky BBQ sauce and served with ranch sour cream dressing. These were delicious to snack on!

Next up was the Appetizer Platter (RM34.90) which features the chicken wings, baked potato skins with cheese & bacon bits and a big serving of nachos – with either a crabmeat spinach dip OR chilli concarne.

Choices of dip for the Appetizer Platter – Chilli Concarne (minced pork sauce with tomatoes and various herbs) OR Crabmeat Spinach dip (a creamy cheesy dip, best eaten when served hot) Out of the two, I would personally prefer the Chilli Concarne.

Next, we had some veggies to ‘lighten up’ the meal – Chicken Caesar Salad (RM19.90) This was a classic caesar salad with crunchy romaine lettuce, tossed with a home made egg yolk dressing. I especially loved the grilled chicken – it was tender and flavourful, making this a possible meal on its own (if that’s the way you roll )

Then came Morganfield’s best seller – their trademarked Sticky Bones! Half rack of smoky, succulent, tender, meat falling off the bone Spare ribs!! Porky goodness to the max! I couldn’t wait to get down and dirty and enjoy the ribs with my hands! We had the half rack Hickory BBQ version – look at the size of it! (RM38.90), Full slab at RM68.90. Morganfield’s sources their pork ribs from Holland, Spain, Belgium and Germany to ensure its quality.

Two other flavours available including Tuscan Baked Spicy Spare Ribs and Smoked Peppercorn Spare Ribs.

Another look at the Hickory BBQ Sticky Bones…. ~drools~ comes served with a side of coleslaw and fries (PS: they taste great with the garlic aioli dip from the Pork Sausage Platter! )

For chicken lovers, Morganfield’s also offers a delectable Chicken Roulade (RM32.90). Strips of chicken thigh is stuffed with a mince pork & sausage stuffing and then wrapped with bacon (~heart~) and served with a creamy mustard sauce. Served with veggies and potato mash (made from red skinned potatoes that taste sweeter than regular potatoes). I loved the rustic style potato mash and the mince pork stuffing in the chicken roulade was excellent. Definitely a good alternative if you’re not feeling like pork for that meal.

And finally… there is dessert! Now I know, judging from the portion sizes on the appetizers and the mains, you might not have much room left for dessert. BUT! Please do leave room for dessert because… they are A-MA-ZING! Normally at outlets like these you would find their desserts rather lack lustre. But not at Morganfield’s. Their Chocolate Lava (RM14.90) is a must try! (and they only make them at limited quantities too) Look at how dark the chocolate cake is – made from semi sweet dark chocolate, it is indeed a chocolate lover’s dream. And wait! there’s the molten lava of chocolate inside too!

Warm chocolate lava paired with cold vanilla ice cream and a lil drizzle of caramel sauce – heaven! If you love chocolate, then you have to try the Chocolate Lava! Be warned – it is RICH!

Now when I heard that we were having Bread Pudding (RM12.90) for the next dessert, I wasn’t too impressed. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good bread pudding, but I was silently wondering if a filling bread pudding would be worth the stomach space since there were so many other goodies to try at Morganfield’s (not to mention the calories! ) But after the first bite, I was SOLD. Totally and wholeheartedly SOLD. Why? Because this Bread Pudding has a ‘secret’ – whiskey sauce! Which totally brings this simple dessert to a whole new level. If I have to nit pick, I would say an added crunchy element would make this perfect! But then again, I would be nit picking Served with vanilla ice cream, this dessert again plays with the hot/cold sensation. I actually found myself eating more of the Bread Pudding than the Chocolate Lava (and that says A LOT, given how big a chocoholic I am!)

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the meal at Morganfield’s and have been back two more times since then

After a long grueling day at work, we decided to pop by Bauernstube Cafe. I had seen some food photos on Erina’s Facebook and thought it looked interesting. I didn’t bring along my camera with me unfortunately. Hence, all photos are taken with my phone so do forgive the photo quality.

Bauernstube Cafe (just 2 weeks old) is housed within The Boutique Residence Hotel which is a new boutique hotel located along Pitt Street (opposite Masjid Kapitan Keling, just before Yap Temple)

The Boutique Residence Hotel – spanning 6 shoplots, located within the Georgetown UNESCO World Heritage site. By the way, speaking of UNESCO World Heritage sites, the annual Georgetown Festival is back in July!! lots of exciting programmes this year! I can’t wait!

Cozy interior… rather limited seating for bigger groups though. We sat outside, which suited me fine cos I wanted the light for photography!

Condiments… I heart Heinz!!

While we waited for our food, we had the good fortune of being shown around the hotel by the very affable Swiss owner. I love poking my nose into new hotel rooms, don’t you? hehehe

I love that there are boutique hotels mushrooming around Penang! It feels much more personal and adds a lot of character to our lil Pearl of the Orient

We were told that room rates start from RM160 for the deluxe rooms, and RM320 for the suites. Not bad eh? Plus the heritage trails are all right outside their door! No breakfast included, but there is a ‘chill out’ corner of sorts by the pool which serves free flow drinks/cereal/cookies etc ALL DAY LONG. I’m sure that beats breakfast!

The pool

One of the Boutique Suites… I so love the cute teddy bear on the bed! A nice touch indeed! The rooms look very comfortable and chic.

OK, back to the food!

We started things off with the Vienna Pork Sausage (RM16). It came served with hot fries and a side salad. I loved the hot dog bun and the pork sausage. There are also a few other pork sausages on the menu that we look forward to trying in the future.

Next, we had their Beef Burger with bacon (RM23). A good size home made burger patty with spices (I don’t think I could finish it on my own!) The burger patty was very flavorful but a tad too salty for our liking.

A look at the beef burger with bacon (with the top half of the bun removed) They also have the option of having the beef burger sans the bacon, or with other extras like egg and cheese.

Alpine Fried Chicken (RM21) came in the form of chicken wings, fried with a combination of spices, with a lil spicy after taste. It was again a tad too salty for us, but I liked the spice marinade.

Lastly, we had a hearty portion of Swiss Rosti with bacon, RM23 (yep, we love our bacon! ). There was an option of 3 different types of sauces to go with the Rosti, and we chose the Mince Meat cream sauce. The Rosti was lovely! Not overly oily, and the mince meat cream sauce paired very well with the Rosti. I look forward to trying it with the other 2 sauce options!

And oh! they have soft serve ice cream too!!! But we were too stuffed for ice cream (I know right, how can I say no to dessert??? Nevermind, this gives me an excuse to come back another day…hehe)

Overall, we enjoyed the food at Bauernstube Bistro Cafe. It’s fuss free, tasty food with hearty portion sizes. We did give our feedback to the very friendly chef regarding the salt, and he took it very constructively

~dusts cobwebs from this lil cyber space~

Hi! I’m back! So where have I disappeared to for the past year or so, you may ask? Well, basically, juggling my day job and my other ‘night’ job (where I’ve sold my soul to cupcakes) left me with practically no time to sleep, let alone food hunting and blogging. But I’ve always wanted to come back to food blogging one day, and didn’t have the heart to delete my blog just like that.

So anyways, in the spirit of striking a balance in my life and inching my way back to food blogging, I said yes when I received an invitation from Agua at Straits Quay to attend their Paella Cookout! (and also because I adore paella!)

Us food bloggers and media were seated at this beautiful sturdy wooden long table which is meant to be a ‘community table’ of sorts, where people can dine and get to know the person sitting next to you. So if you’re in the mood to make some new friends (don’t be shy now!), just ask to be seated there! After all, to quote the lovely editor at Expressions Magazine - ‘strangers are just friends you’ve not yet met’

Ingredients for the paella – butter beans, corguettes, french beans, tomatoes etc…

The Paella Cookout starts off with a cooking demonstration of the Paella by Agua’s chef. We would be served two different types of paella that night – a seafood one, and a chicken paella.

According to the chef, Paella is about the family & community. It is usually cooked on weekends and each Spanish cook will have their own version of the recipe, each claiming theirs to be the best. Chef says you can basically put anything you want in your paella, but key ingredients are the olive oil and saffron spice (more on that later).

More Paella ingredients – arborio rice, olive oil, smoked paprika (which gives the Paella a wonderful smoky flavour!) and saffron (the world’s most expensive spice!)

And the cooking demo starts! Ingredients are cooked in a large shallow pan over low fire.

Cooked until the ingredients are coated with a nice shiny sheen from the olive oil

The rice is added…

Add the stock and let it simmer….

Seafood paella… almost done!

Ta-dah! Seafood paella!

After the cooking demo, we started our dinner with a Paysanne salad – a traditional Spanish salad with aubergines, avocados, some white asparagus and other greens. It came with a light oil based dressing. And I must say that the salad was indeed very refreshing! Also a healthy dish too since Mediterranean cooking is widely known for its health benefits

Along with the salad, we were served some Garlic Bread (no complaints here)

And finally, both the Chicken and the Seafood Paella. The paella rice had a comforting starchy quality to it without being mushy, and both had distinct flavours. But I must say that while I thoroughly enjoyed both, the Seafood Paella stands out between the two as the flavour was richer and smokier.

The Paella cookout dinner also comes with a glass of Sangria (which I really really liked, I was drinking it like a fish really…) Do excuse the blurry shot of the Sangria (taken with my phone). The lovely drink and the wonderful company caused me to temporarily toss my ‘food blog duties’ aside and I promptly forgot to take a shot of the Sangria with my camera.

The traditional red Sangria is made of red wine with slices of fruit. A non alcoholic White version is also available (made from Grape juice)

I had no more room for dessert (though I’m told that Agua serves a really mean Triffle) Must come back again another day for that!

Paella Cookout happens every 3rd Wednesday of the month (a welcome midweek pick-me-up-er, I must say!). Purchase tickets for the cookout online (in advance) at a very reasonable RM38++. Walk ins on that night will have to pay RM50++. Purchase your tickets online HERE.

We spied a new restaurant opening up at the busy Burmah Road (just a lil further down from the Pulau Tikus police station) where the old Strada
Restaurant was located. (Strada has now moved to Codrington Avenue)

And so one fine afternoon we drove past Sukhothai and decided to drop in. We were lucky enough to get a parking spot in front of the restaurant

We were seated promptly and shown the menu which surprisingly enough only has 4 items to choose from! How’s that for niche and simplified? (guess I’ve been watching too much restaurant makeovers on tv where there’s images of them slashing off items on the menu in efforts to keep it simple and not try to serve everything under the sun!) Lol

There’s the Thai beef noodles (option of original noodles, glass noodles and instant noodles), Pad Thai, Fried Rice and…. Shoot! I forgot the fourth item!! (my bad, so sue me!)

Thai beef noodles RM12.90 (with original thai flat noodles which are silky smooth!) and condiments to add on your own (chilli powder, chilli paste etc)
The beef noodles come served with a side of raw bean sprouts (good thing it’s on the side cos my grandpa doesn’t like them.. To each his own)
Grandpa thoroughly enjoyed his beef noodles. I stole a few bites and found the broth to be hearty and flavourful. The beef was generous, tender and succulent.

Meanwhile, I had the Pad Thai (RM12.90) It was sweet (as is characteristic of pad thais) and a good squeeze of lime lends it a lovely sweet and tangy flavour.

We ended the meal with Durian sticky rice (RM8.90)

It was really rich, creamy, sweet and had a not too overpowering durian flavour.

My roselle juice (RM4.90) which was refreshing (their drinks list is longer than their food list! Lol)

We found service to be very prompt and friendly. And the food was pretty good too!

With so many commitments and demands of my time lately, food hunting is now a luxury. Therefore I do look forward to the precious few moments where I can actually go out to town and enjoy a good meal. (So it really does piss me off when I get to go out for dinner to try a new place and get served crap food, which unfortunately happens one time to many lately, with a few of the new-er cafe style places in Penang!)

But amongst the haystack of mediocre lacklustre places, shines a brilliant diamond in the rough – Sumi-ka Yakitori! (unfortunately, it’s not located in Penang, but in SS15 Subang Jaya) Nonetheless I just have to rave about this place.

It’s an unassuming, blink-and-you’ll-miss it kinda place. In fact I don’t really know how to get there myself (but there are some directions and the address at the end of this post). The black sign board of Sumi-ka overshadowed by the big, bright White Bubble Dobi sign. Sumi-ka is not new, but it definitely has a loyal following judging from the labelled bottles of wine and sake along the wall…

Sumi-ka is not a big place. Tables are limited and they serve a small but varied grilled menu. The Japanese big boss himself helms the grill and is a jolly and loud character. Every now and then, you’ll hear an energetic chorus of ‘HAI!’ (Yes in Japanese) from the staff, in response to something their boss shouts in Japanese. The staff are efficient and quick. They pick up succulent sticks of meat from the grill and serves them in a flash.

The menu is a simple two page menu – no photos. Just a list of different meats and vegetables for you to choose from.

First you get serve a bowl of cabbage salad that’s free flow (just some fibre to balance up all that charcoal grilled meats later on.. hehe) Okay.. here goes… photos galore!

Salmon and Mushrooms (which had a lovely delicate smoky flavour, slightly crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside!)

Squids (no rubbery squids here, yay~) and Quail Egg

Meatballs coated with a sweet sauce

My absolute favourite meat on a stick here at Sumi-ka – the Miso Beef Ribs… tender flavourful meat.. one stick is simply not enough! (though your wallet may protest a lil cos its about RM9 a stick?)

Grilled sweet potato – buttery and sweet, another must try! Be careful not to burn yourself while opening up the foil though!

Grilled prawns – these come in S, M, L size. lol I think we had the M.

Onigiri <3 They also do a toasted onigiri basted with a lil teriyaki sauce which is equally yummy

Pork Bacon rolls!! One with cheese and the other with Mentaiko, both I like

Grilled chicken wings with course salt sprinkled on top. This may be a lil salty for some, but I do find that the salt lends much flavour to the wings.

And finally a lil something sweet to end the meal – pudding or Creme Caramel.

Prices per stick ranges from RM4-6, with some pricier items at RM9 for the beef. Sumi-ka also serves grilled fish like saba and there are also items from the specials board (written in japanese though so you’d have to ask the staff to translate )

The place is small so best to call to book a table. Service was prompt on both my visits thus far. A word of caution though, its really easy to rake up a rather huge bill munching on these nifty lil sticks of yummi-ness. But nonetheless, I’m definitely a fan!
