For “BCI-24_BLACK, I printed a completely black piece of paper and kept repeating this until the inkcartridge was empty and the printer gave some error stating that it could not continue anymore. After the printing I scanned every piece of paper back in to the computer and combined them in one long image that measures 20 cm by 255 cm.

Interrupt is an installation that takes Cambrian Explosion (another one of my projects, done together with Dennis de Bel) as a starting point. The conversation between the two computers is no longer limited to interacting between eachother, they have gained the the ability of sight.

When visitors walk in between the two screens they disturb the conversation by their presence. By showing that the computers know where the visitors are walking and changing the sound that is generated (read: changing the tone of their voice) they try to warn the visitors of. Like this the visitor becomes part of their conversation.

In this installation two computers are involved in an intricate evolutionary debate, creating a dynamic, ever-evolving collage of sound an image.

The piece consists of a beamer, a screen, two computers and audio speakers. The two computers communicate to each other using sound based on the visuals they create. One computer receives the sound of the other and creates a three dimensional entity based on this sound. The 3d image is then translated to sound again by the computers specific algorithm. This new sound is then send to the other computer which repeats the same process. Each iteration builds upon another, creating an ever evolving play of shape and sound.

Cambrian Explosion is a collaboration with Dennis de Bel and has been shown at the TESTnula Festival in Zagreb, Croatia and at the Counter Culture Festival in Holland

Artist Geert Mul and programmer Erik Overmeire developed the Baltan Tracker, a hardware / software combination for motion tracking of persons in a space. Normally this kind of motion tracking is being done using normal or near-infrared cameras. This is can be problematic due to the fact that any form of incoming light or any kind of object might be mistaken for a ‘person’. The Baltan Tracker uses a thermographic camera, which prevents a lot of these light related misinterpretations because the camera is heat-sensitive. In fact it does not see ‘light’ at all, only infrared radiation (heat).

The BaltanTrackerwas commisioned by Baltan Laboratories.

Erik Overmeire has lead a workshop on 21-10-2010 at BKKC in Tilburg, using the Baltan Tracker as a starting point to explore the use and possibilities of motion tracking for artists.
Erik will explain the basic components of any motion tracker and the max/msp library the participants will be using, and then invite the participants to make a simple work using the motion tracking tools and knowledge they have gained in the workshop.

From 13 february till 22 march I had an exhibition together with Dennis de Bel at Medialab Enchede titled Soundtrack. For this occasion we made 2 new works together which are:

Youback

This installation, made up of 2 mobile beamers and a camera, results in a very interesting interaction between beamer and visitor. The visitor sees himself getting trapped in a feedback reaction, he can escape this by moving towards the beamers. The beamers react to the presence of the visitor by moving away, like this the visitor can move the beamers phisically out of the view area of the camera and escape the feedback reaction.

∞

Two indepently developped software applications that feed eachother with a simple audio signal. The image of one applaction generates sound which result with the other application in image. This image then also generates sound and is send back to the first application which generates the image there.

The other works exhibited were the Scared Chair by Erik Overmeire and Fourgan by Dennis de Bel.
