LG’s 3D Game Festival has kicked off, attracting throngs of excited, energetic gamers from across the world. Already, 50,000 spectators gathered in Seoul last June for the inaugural festival. LG’s 3D Game Festival used the first event in Seoul, Korea as a springboard for its overseas journey. The Seoul event in late June saw 50,000 visitors show up to experience LG 3D gaming.

The Festival features a LG booth, where visitors are encouraged to play 3D games on LG’s various 3D products, enabling visitors to experience first-hand LG’s immersive 3D world. Featured products spanned CINEMA 3D TVs, monitors, and projectors to Optimus 3D smartphones and 3D sound-equipped home theater systems. In particular, with the Optimus 3D, gamers worldwide were able to experience LG’s own 2D to 3D game conversion engine.

The types of venues selected for the Festival varied by country. In order to accommodate larger crowds, shopping malls were chosen for Russia, India and Chile. In order to give visitors a comfortable feel of how home entertainment should be, Festival visitors in Dubai interacted with various LG 3D products in Living Room Video Game Cafes. In Brazil and Germany, LG opted for a road show format, hoping to generate curiosity amongst the countries’ demanding consumers.

‘Gamescom’ is the biggest games and entertainment show in the world and was held in Colon, Germany from Aug.17-21. At the show, LG opened a booth and provided the full 3D gaming experience with its entire line-up of 3D products. Visitors were particularly fond of the lightweight glasses that functioned with all LG 3D screens.

At Germany’s Gamescom, the world’s largest gaming and entertainment exhibition, LG introduced an array of gaming and gaming-related devices which were used for 3D games produced by the likes of Blizzard Entertainment. LG’s 3D products were also hooked up to Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect.

In Russia, LG set up the Festival at Mega Khimki, one of the largest shopping malls in Moscow. Several celebrity Russian gamers and national broadcasting companies took part in the Festival which featured a gaming tournament called ‘1C SoftKlab.’ The glasses-free Optimus 3D proved to be a big hit among Russian visitors, a top of the line smartphone that previews the future of larger screen 3D TVs.

Meanwhile, the Festival in Dubai has been a pro-longed one. Having begun in late July, the Festival is expected to culminate in the Mega Championship on January 6 of next year. Leading up to the championship finale, LG will continue to host daily, weekly and monthly contests in Dubai. The contest winners have been awarded prizes, which has certainly contributed to generating popularity. So far, t-shirts have been handed out at smaller contests, while some of the larger ones have awarded 42-inch CINEMA 3D TVs and other LG 3D products.

Celebrities and entertainers were invited to LG’s 3D Game Festival in Russia. Various media events and performances demonstrated the potential that 3D could bring to gaming.

In Dubai, LG has jointly worked with ‘Living Rooms Video Games Cafés where users experience a true 3D gaming environment at home. The championships events have proven very popular, and organizers say the city is gaining more interest in home 3D gaming.

Overall, LG’s 3D Game Festival has served a meaningful purpose, exposing the latest industry-leading 3D products and technologies to users. In addition to LG’s immersive display panels and dazzling 3D visuals, visitors across the world were able to witness LG’s attempts to make 3D more convenient, as evidenced in LG’s 3D glasses. Life’s Good with Optimus 3D

On July 26, New York City’s Terminal 5 venue rocked to the sound of Jane’s Addiction, as 1,500 fans packed in to see the alt-rock heroes. Twenty-six years after they formed, the musical veterans put in a storming show that had the crowds whooping for more.

At this recent Jane’s Addiction concert, LG and the band selected 100 fans to film the gig in 3D using an Optimus 3D smartphone. Also, thanks to LG’s existing partnership with YouTube, fans all over the world got the chance to see the world’s first user-generated 3D concert on YouTube (www.youtube.com/comealive).

Held on a 360° stage that allowed for full surround sound and panoramic viewing, the concert was part of LG’s efforts to put 3D content creation in the hands of users and show just how far 3D entertainment has come.

Armed with the LG Optimus 3D devices, Jane’s Addiction’s fans enjoyed the band’s most famous songs while capturing 3D video of the concert that helped create a 60-minute documentary about the “World’s First 3D User-Generated Concert.”

Telling the tale of this technological advance, a documentary also aired on YouTube’s 3D channel on August 4 detailing how 3D is changing the way we can view, create and share life’s memorable moments.

Evidence of this shift has long been evident in the creative arts, where directors and artists have produced a growing canon of great 3D work. In Korea, a well-known movie director has taken a more experimental step with 3D content, creating a short film shot entirely with LG’s Optimus 3D smartphone.

Jang Jin, whose directing credits include the hits Someone Special and Guns and Talks, shot a seven-minute short entirely on the phone and debuted it at the recent Optimus 3D launch event in Seoul. The movie has since spread to the internet, where it has generated a good deal of positive buzz (http://optimus3d.lgmobile.co.kr).

“As the leader in 3D technology, LG has opened the door to a 3D world where we actually live,” Jang said in an interview. “I’ve discovered and experienced the potential of Optimus 3D to present a whole new dimension of entertainment to the audience: I mean 3D.”

Jang Jin filmed his seven-minute 3D short using only his Optimus 3D phone, some items from everyday life, and his fertile imagination. The move shows the full potential of 3D content, and has already created quite a stir with techies and 3D fans.

Jang’s unique movie attracted 30,000 hits in a single hour when it was released on July 7, and has drawn 90,000 hits in total since. Following the success of this venture, an LG spokesperson said the company has many more plans for events to show off the full potential of the Optimus 3D phone.

Portable gaming is another area where the Optimus 3D can really shine. With this in mind, LG has worked to develop numerous games while also installing features such as the “3D Game Converter,” which turns regular 2D games into thrilling 3D.

Working with Gameloft, a leading mobile game developer, LG has pre-installed LG Optimus 3D phones with three renowned Gameloft titles in 3D as well as an LG-developed 3D game.

LG has been also supporting future leaders at events such as the IndeCade Game Festival, known as "the Sundance of the video game industry.” Around 500 games and game developers participated in the most recent edition of this indie games festival; LG served as a major sponsor and its staff served on the festival’s judging panel.

On August 6 and 7, independent game developers took part in a two-day, LG-sponsored “game jam” in L.A. to help create games for LG’s 3D smartphone. Importance of Depth Perception in 3D

How full is FULL 3D?

How good is the 3D in movies like Avatar and Transformers: Dark of the Moon?

Why do some scenes jump out more than others?

Why do some people feel discomfort wearing 3D glasses and others don’t?

A lot of it has to do with something the industry experts call “depth”.

Depth is a key part of the process of rendering 3D images in every scene. For instance, in a movie like the third Transformers installment, having massive robots moving around (and sometimes through!) tall buildings requires a lot of depth. On the other hand, in a scene with a close-up of two people having an intimate conversation, very little depth is needed.

3D filmmakers have to strike the right balance between the amount of depth and the actual depth being conveyed in the movie. They are also keenly aware that excessive depth in every scene will cause viewers to succumb to an effect known as “3D fatigue”. In other words, too much 3D isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Depth preferences are also very dependent on the individual. Fortunately, this is where LG’s technology excels.

Beyond Optimus: The Stories Behind The Success

With a name that means “the best” in Latin, it’s fitting that LG’s Optimus brand has seen some of the mobile team’s best ever work. Already, two of the smartphone line’s flagship models – the Optimus Black and the Optimus 2X – have shifted more than a million units each worldwide, and the Optimus 3D is shaping up to be another big hit, too.

Behind the success of LG’s latest offerings are stories of passionate engineers and designers who overcame enormous challenges while working on the Optimus line. LG placed top priority on the Optimus project, focusing tremendous resources and the company’s brightest minds on ensuring success.

Since LG jumped into the smartphone market, around 6,000 engineers at the headquarters of LG Mobile Communications (MC) have been working continuously on more than 10 projects. From 7am to midnight Monday to Friday (and more than a few weekends), the labs have been buzzing with activity. When deadlines have pressed, a few of the researchers have even spent a night or two sleeping at the lab.

LG’s cutting-edge Optimus Black is equipped with Nova Display technology, providing comfortable colors and outstanding outdoor visibility that outshines the competition.

Chief engineers and executives from LG gather in Gasan, Seoul, for an interview about the trials they faced developing the million-unit-selling Optimus Black.

“Our number one focus was to differentiate ourselves. The response from consumers has been even more positive than we expected,” said Eun-sook Cho, Vice President of the product platform division department at LG Mobile Communication Company. “Most of today’s smartphones are similar to one another; we saw the importance in standing apart from the crowd. So while we did engage in a lot of hardware development, which has already yielded the world’s first dual-core processor, we also spent a lot of time on the software side of things to give customers a completely new feel to the smartphone experience.”

With the Optimus Black, over 200 engineers were assigned to the team in Korea, aided by R&D, production and marketing staff from LG facilities in China, India, Brazil and Europe. One of the examples of this cooperation is the Optimus Black’s gesture control functions.

Engineers were just curious to know which basic functions could be controlled effectively through gesture commands such as shaking, leaning or flipping.

Over a period of six months, these rough ideas were modified, refined and worked into the phone. A big user favorite so far is the ability to answer calls just by shaking or flipping the phone, which comes in very handy when it’s too cold to take your gloves off, or when you’re holding a baby or groceries in one hand.

Behavioral patterns were also taken into account. LG used a team of experts to observe and study user preferences, particularly regarding how they move icons across the screen. This helped the software designers to produce an interface that felt intuitive and natural.

While the Optimus Black has garnered praise for its distinctive display and innovative features, the Optimus 2X has been turning heads as “the monster phone with two brains.” A charming and chic creature nonetheless, the Optimus 2X is the first phone to be equipped with a dual core processor that offers a multi-functional user experience.

Focusing on phones that would provide the smoothest experience with high-end software, LG produced the world’s first dual-core smartphone, as recognized by Guinness World Records, and its first 3D phone, the “Tri-Dual-Core” Optimus 3D.

The Optimus 2X is the world’s first dual core processor, and boasts a chic, slim-line design.

Optimus 2X users have responded very positively to the efficient functions and the phone’s chic, modern exterior. Yet this seemingly simple design took a great deal of effort to bring to life. LG design team had to find glass processing craftsmen to complete the modern exterior of the phone. However, the masters LG found were ill-equipped to take on the massive volume of extra work and weren’t willing to take challenges. In the end, LG was able to persuade a highly qualified group of craftsmen to join the design team.

The designers and engineers weren’t the only people involved who faced formidable challenges. For instance, component prototypes were often sent back to the subcontractors, in some cases seven or eight times, until the Optimus 2X’s engineers and design team were satisfied.

And while this meticulous drive for perfection was filled with headaches, dead ends, and countless hours of designing and redesigning, all of those involved knew that the Optimus would live up to the origins of its Latin name.

Seoul, Jun. 25, 2011 – LG Electronics’ (LG) 47LW5500-ZE and 47LW550T-ZE CINEMA 3D TVs have become the first TVs in Europe to receive the Carbon Reduction Label, a low carbon footprint labelling scheme managed by the Carbon Trust, a non-profit company set up in 2001 with the support of the UK Government.

“This certification marks an important step forward for us in terms of improving our environmental brand image in Europe,” said Il-geun Kwon, head of LG’s LCD TV R&D Lab. “Europe is the world’s largest TV market so it is important that LG be able to communicate to its European consumers our commitment to developing world-class products using the most responsible materials and manufacturing processes.”

The Carbon Reduction Label reflects LG’s pledge to reduce greenhouse gases. It also demonstrates the progress and commitment the Korean company made to reduce the amount of carbon associated with the entire lifespan of its products, from production to distribution to use. Equally important, the award reflects the changing priorities of LG’s customers -- both in Europe and elsewhere -- to put greater emphasis on environmentally-responsible manufacturing.

With climate change and the environment playing a more important role in consumers’ purchasing decisions, eco-friendly products have a clear competitive advantage. LG is focusing heavily on reducing the power consumption of its TVs and is also evaluating its supply and distribution chains and the way the company buys components. LG will continue to encourage contractors to utilize “low-coal” goods and more energy efficient manufacturing processes.

Through innovations such as Edge LED and the Local Dimming System, the 47LW5500-ZE and 47LW550T-ZE use more than 30 percent less energy compared to conventional models in the same class. And with Smart Energy Saving, LG’s own energy reduction technology, the LCD TVs further reduce power consumption by up to 70 percent. This translates into a reduction of 795kg of carbon dioxide emissions over the average lifespan of a TV in Europe (7.2 years). This is the equivalent of 250 liters of diesel fuel.

Thanks to their slim designs, LG’s certified CINEMA 3D TVs also use 37 percent less packing volume than other similar models. This reduction further helps reduce LG’s carbon footprint, particularly in terms of physical distribution costs per unit.

LG’S STYLISH HOM-BOT RECOGNIZED FOR INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY AND GREAT DESIGN

SEOUL, Jun. 23 2011 – LG Electronics’ (LG) HOM-BOT Smart Vacuum Cleaning Robot was recognized as a finalist at the 7th Annual Invention and Entrepreneurship Award in Robotics and Automation (IERA). Between the IERA recognition and a red dot design award, the HOM-BOT is the only robotic cleaner in the world to be honored by both prestigious organizations.

A co-sponsored activity between the International Federation of Robotics and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, the purpose of the IERA award is to highlight and honor the achievements of inventors with value creating ideas and entrepreneurs who propel those ideas into world-class products. The IERA underlines the determination of both the International Federation of Robotics and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society to promote stronger collaboration between robotics science and the robotics industry.

“We’re honored by this recognition because the HOM-BOT is all about using technol-ogy to make housework less inconvenient,” said Young-ha Lee, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “The right balance of technology and func-tionality is what makes LG products unique and HOM-BOT is a shining example.”

The HOM-BOT boasts an impressive array of cutting-edge features. The Dual Eye Camera Sensor is the first such device to be utilized in a vacuum cleaner and uses one lens on the top fascia and one on the bottom to provide more comprehensive visual data. The upper camera is also tasked with simultaneously mapping and remembering floor plans, while the lower camera is equipped with an Optical Flow Sensor that captures a myriad of surface images per second, providing distance information and plotting paths for the HOM-BOT to follow.

Ultrasonic and infrared sensors identify obstacles and work to prevent the redundant bump-and-retreat action. Failsafe systems are built in, so in the event that the HOM-BOT does run into an obstacle, the accelerometer and gyro sensor allow the cleaner to react accordingly. The result of this compilation of sensors and programming is a vac-uum that avoids the pitfalls rival systems often suffer from. Moreover, the HOM-BOT is pleasingly quiet, with noise levels reduced to just 60dB.

In addition to its technological achievement, HOM-BOT was named a winner of a red dot design award, one of the most prestigious in the industry. Since 1955, the Essen De-sign Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has annually selected outstanding design quality and paid official tribute to the award-winning products in an exhibition. The 2011 competi-tion received 4,433 products from 1,700 companies, entered from 60 different countries. The official award ceremony will be held in Essen, Germany on July 4.

Abu Dhabi, the rich and vibrant capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has developed into one of the most attractive destinations in the region. With some of the most iconic examples of modern architecture in the world, it was no easy task for LG to choose just one venue for its CINEMA 3D launch in the Middle East and Africa market.

LG hoped to celebrate its latest 3D technology with as many of its partners, customers and members of the media as possible, but the event had to be something special, something memorable. In the end, there was only one choice – LG would take over Ferrari World Abu Dhabi for a day.

As the world’s largest indoor theme park, Ferrari World was clearly the right choice for LG to reaffirm its commitment to cutting-edge innovation. Bold and dramatic from an architectural standpoint, the red mega-structure is gracefully situated on Yas Island, also home to the Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Both the building and the attractions inside reflect Ferrari’s brand values of passion, technical innovation and excellence, three values that LG itself is very familiar with.

And as if that weren’t enough, LG called upon one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars to help – ‘Transformers’ lead actress, Megan Fox.

Fox attended the launch with her husband, Brian Austin Green, perhaps best known for his roles in Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles and Desperate Housewives. With her stunning smile and chic style, Fox certainly had her fair share of admirers as she admired LG’s wares.

A series of CINEMA 3D experience zones were situated throughout the park to show off the system’s capabilities. The centerpiece was an epically big 500 inch LED 3D screen shipped in from Korea.

While Fox took in the impressive technical exhibitions, Green also showed an interest – as well as a quick sense of humor – when he remarked, “I'd watch [Megan] in 3D. It enhances the viewing.” After a quick laugh, he offered a few more insights. “I think what it would be great for is things like racing. I think sporting events would be amazing. Basketball, boxing."

In the afternoon, the charismatic actress changed into a cream-colored dress and mingled with the other guests as well as the media, commenting on the extent to which 3D had become a part of her life.

"I have one CINEMA 3D in my bedroom. We have a step-son who is obviously going to be into 3D in every way. It's a pretty impressive television. All of the apps it has are great. With YouTube and a web browser, it's sort of an all-in-one home entertainment system, and you don't have to have separate components. You hook it up and everything is there. It really is amazing."

The day was split into two sessions, with the morning devoted to a press conference where more than 150 journalists were introduced to the next generation CINEMA 3D TVs. In the evening, more than 3,500 invited guests were given entry into the park to enjoy the attractions and experience CINEMA 3D for themselves.

The morning press event saw media representatives from across the Middle East and Africa descend on Ferrari World for the CINEMA 3D unveiling. As a demonstrative tool, the journalists were encouraged to compare CINEMA 3D displays with existing technologies in side-by-side comparison zones that focused on both visual strengths as well as content management.

Early in the evening, Fox returned once more to perform a ceremonial ribbon cutting to open the experience zones. The invited guests then had free rein to enjoy all the theme park attractions, including a wide array of interactive exhibitions demonstrating the full range of CINEMA 3D’s capabilities.

More than 3,500 guests were treated to a visual spectacle, only possible due to CINEMA 3D’s Flexible Viewing Positions and Wide Viewing Angle features which create the perfect viewing experience for large groups. Also, LG’s lightweight, comfortable and inexpensive glasses are seen as a step up from the inconveniences presented by shutter-style glasses, and CINEMA 3D’s compatibility with a wide range of preferred content has also garnered praise.

“LG is opening a new chapter in the development of world TV by bringing CINEMA 3D to consumers in the region. It represents the absolute pinnacle of 3D TV entertainment using the very best of recent innovative technology from LG,” said Mr. Ki-wan Kim, President of LG Electronics, Middle East & Africa Region.

As the largest launching event that LG has ever held, the entire celebration was a daunting undertaken inside of the world’s largest theme park. That it turned out to be a resounding success was seen by many as a reflection of the priority LG has placed on dominating the home 3D TV market.

Champions of the Earth: UN Honors Eco-pioneers

On the evening of May 10, a huge electronic billboard on Broadway in New York displayed the smiling faces of eco-pioneers from around the world, along with a single, simple message: congratulations.

This was a super-sized thank you to the men and women being honored nearby at the one of the world’s most prestigious environmental award ceremonies, the Champions of the Earth, staged by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Gisele Bundchen, the Brazilian super model and UN Goodwill Ambassador, attended to the special ceremony at the Museum of Natural History in New York. The show commenced with a stirring performance by Angélique Kidjo, a Grammy Award-winning singer from Benin.

The Museum of Natural History in New York was transformed into a splendid ceremonial hall for the occasion.

Chosen by UNEP, the Champions of the Earth represent the most inspirational, innovative examples of people leading the battle against environmental degradation, and helping create a sustainable, green economy for the 21st century.

Winners are chosen in four categories – Policy Leadership, Science and Innovation, Entrepreneurial Vision, and Inspiration and Action – and have included such illustrious figures as Mikhail Gorbachev in 2006, Al Gore in 2007, and Monaco’s Prince Albert II in 2008.

This year’s laureates are also monuments to the power of inspirational leaders in helping resolve the big environmental issues of our time. At the ceremony, these environmental heroes were lauded in front of a crowd of more than 400, including 20 UN ambassadors, the presidents of NGOs, and executives and staff from LG Electronics.

The five winners, described by UNEP as “Environmental champions whose daily work, leadership and advocacy represent green innovation in action,” hailed from across the world and from all walks of life.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon won the Policy Leadership award for spearheading efforts to fight climate change; while Angélique Kidjo and Switzerland’s Louis Palmer were both awarded the Inspiration and Action award – Kidjo for her unwavering commitment to humanitarian and environmental issues; Palmer for leading a fleet of electric cars around the world in 80 days last year.

Dr. Olga Speranskaya, a Russian scientist, won the Science and Innovation Award for her work in reducing the harmful impact of toxic chemicals; and China’s Zhang Xue, chairman and founder of the BROAD Group, took the Entrepreneurial Vision prize for his innovative central air-conditioning systems, which use natural gas instead of electricity to cool buildings.

The laureate received a commemorative trophy, along with a cash prize of USD 40,000 per each category sponsored by LG Electronics, UNEP’s sole strategic partner. Besides its financial contribution, LG supports Champions of the Earth’s message by promoting innovations and products that help improve our environment.

Launched in 2005, Champions of the Earth has to date recognized 46 individuals and organizations for their leadership and vision on environmental issues.

LG has been a strategic partner of UNEP since 2009, when the company announced its global “Life’s Good When It’s Green” initiative. The initiative is the foundation of LG’s global sustainability program, which focuses on “Eco-Design & Eco-Products,” the reduction of hazardous materials, responsible recycling and addressing global climate change. As a leading corporate citizen, under the slogan “Hope for Life’s Good,” LG has been playing an active role in global efforts to provide sustainable solutions and help achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). By engaging with diverse stakeholders such as governments, academic institutions, NGOs and its employees, LG is helping to create and share common values based on creativity, sustainability and more fulfilling lives. “Something has to be done,” Kidjo said at the event. “We cannot just continue being blinded by the fact that climate change is a reality. It is not a fantasy. It has been proven.”

When the formalities were over, the ceremony turned into a big party soundtracked by live music from Kidjo herself. Bundchen was next to join her, and before long the stage was full of guests celebrating the night in style. It was a fittingly upbeat ending to a night that reminded everyone that for all the environmental problems we face, people like the Champions of the Earth ensure that the future is always a bright place.

LG: Designed to Win

In early March, swarms of top designers, manufacturers, and design-savvy spectators headed for Hannover, Germany, for the iF Design Awards, one of the top design awards in the world. Founded in 1953, iF has been spreading the design gospel ever since, becoming synonymous with smart, sophisticated industrial design in the process. iF Design Awards consists of Product Design Award, Communication Design Award, Material Design Award and Packing Design Award.

For the iF Product Design Award this year, iF’s distinguished judges evaluated 2,756 entries from 1,121 participants hailing from 43 different countries. Across 16 categories, the iF panel finally chose 993 winners, who will now be entitled to emblazon their products with the iF logo, the gold standard of outstanding design.

The gold trophy for the 50 top entries is the work of German designer Herbert Schultes, who created the sculpture in 1996 especially for the iF Awards.

The top 50 winners also received an iF gold award, along with a sculpture created by renowned German designer Herbert Schultes. The winners were presented with their trophies at a special ceremony at the Hannover Exhibition Center.

While innovative, the winning entries also encapsulated the spirit of their brands. They included everything from a container pool to a USB clip to traditional furniture, but were united in demonstrating how efficient design can turn mere products into works of art.

The container pool, for instance, is the first complete swimming pool to be built in a shipping container, making it both attractive and fun. Its quirky but practical design also includes LED lighting, portholes, and an access ladder. As their name suggests, the USB clips are both USB sticks and clips, providing a novel but convenient way of clipping important information to physical documents.

Calling the winners a “revival of brands,” the judges said: “In this year’s award, there were several extremely good examples of designs in which the brand philosophy of a company was communicated in a particularly successful fashion.”

One of those successes was LG’s PICO phone (the S100), a dinky cellphone designed by Hong-sik Kim and his team at LG. Along with the ELEGANCE, from Austrian firm emporia, and the iPhone 4, the PICO was one of only three phones to win a coveted iF Product Design Award.

The judges described the PICO as “A tiny cell phone that pays special attention to the interface between display, keyboard and speaker. This product has managed to develop an identity all its own [and] its sculptural appearance is particularly successful.”

LG’s PICO phone (the S100), one of the top 50 award winners, is a compact-sized phone with minimalist design and functions.

“We focused on compensating the shortcomings of current smart devices that have tendency to become bigger pursuing extensive information and powerful visual,” Kim said of his winning design. “We preferred to concentrate on network functions and hand-tight feeling of the portable device as a functional portable handset.”

3D Joins Cream of Indie Film-making Talent at Tribeca Festival

When two-time Academy Award winner Robert De Niro co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival 10 years ago, he was determined to have festival goers experience a unique celebration of the power and possibilities of film. This year’s event, which wrapped on May 1, was another successful celebration of that spirit, with a shower of quirky, challenging, and independent-minded productions from around the world.

Some 5,600 films and documentaries from more than 40 countries were on show at the New York event. Star turns included Cameron Crowe with “The Union,” his first film in six years, and Will Ferrell, who lent his comedic talents to the low-budget comedy “Everything Must Go

Just as exciting, however, was the vast selection of films from lesser-known talents, including productions from South Africa, Norway and across the United States that tackled everything from avant-garde poets to children with photographic memories.

Eager to help foster the adventurous talents of tomorrow, LG provided students from the Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, in Chicago, with equipment and technical support to help them produce a series of shorts with the company’s latest 3D technology, CINEMA 3D. The films also debuted at this year’s festival, on a series of CINEMA 3D TVs and Blu-ray™ players in venues throughout lower Manhattan.

“Our students and faculty are so happy to have had this opportunity to use the latest in digital film and 3D technology,” said Audrey Welling, a senior producer at the academy. “It certainly gave them an edge as they leave the classroom and start their careers.”

“As a student it’s important to be able to learn how to shoot 3D, how to edit 3D, how to master 3D, because it’s the way of the future,” said Stephen Fletcher, a student at the academy.

Of note among the submitted films, “The Flying Wallendas Highwire Family,” turned heads by successfully capturing the tension of live high wire performances in the 3D format. Viewers also enjoyed an animated short, “The Universe of 3D,” which showed how LG’s 2D logo could be transformed into a compelling visual experience.

By providing students with the skills they need to create 3D films of their own, the joint project with Tribeca is also aiming to push creation of the kind of inventive, daring content that can make 3D such a thrilling medium for home entertainment.

"We hope that our alliance with Tribeca and the Tribeca Flashpoint Academy will inspire more young filmmakers to create 3D content for consumers to enjoy," said John Weinstock, Vice President of Marketing for LG. "The 3D films created by these students already capture the exciting possibilities of the 3D experience."

At the ripe old age of 10, the Tribeca Festival has matured into one of the leading outlets for creative, leftfield filmmaking in the United States. CINEMA 3D Makes Record-Breaking Arrival in Europe

On April 21, LG held one of the most ambitious events in its history as it launched its new CINEMA 3D TVs in Europe. In the beautiful Grand Palais in Paris, LG invited 1,500 stars, media, retailers and customers to what would be the biggest ever screening of a 3D movie on the biggest ever 3D screen - facts now acknowledged by Guinness World of Records.

Paris, known for beautiful scenery and rich history, is one of the most visited cities in the world. Once the center of a sprawling empire, France’s capital now stands as a cultural marvel and a showcase of human endeavor.

Then, there is the Grand Palais, a magnificent structure built in 1900 for the World’s Fair. Used to stage everything from grand exhibitions to horse-riding contests, it is better known as a symbol of innovation and modernity.

Our France marketing team thought that such a symbolic place – which has inspired the public with art and technology for over 100 years – would be the perfect venue to launch our CINEMA 3D. And they were absolutely right!

With the venue secured, visualizing the event was exciting – overwhelming, even. With some big decisions and the full support of our top brass, we collaborated with six teams from LG HQ and the France office to plan the most ambitious event I’ve been part of in more than 10 years of marketing.

The challenges were many and daunting. Due to government regulations, booking the Grand Palais would ordinarily have to be done more than a year in advance – we had two months. In that time, we had to pull out all the stops to persuade the authorities to let us use the Grand Palais, while we simultaneously planned an event that would normally take at least six months to pull off.

Most galling of all, though, was ensuring the event befitted the stature of the venue. We originally pitched the event as the biggest ever 3D movie screening for the public – but we knew that even this wouldn’t be enough. The authorities in charge of Grand Palais are very strict about its events not being too “commercial,” so we had to come up with something really creative, but which also clearly communicated what makes CINEMA 3D so special.

Our solution was to turn the Grand Palais into a “total 3D playground.” As visitors wandered around with their CINEMA 3D glasses, they would pass an entire side of the Grand Palais set up as an “experience zone,” where they could see for themselves the difference between CINEMA 3D TVs and competing 3D sets. Nearby would be a section of 3D video games, 3D projectors and 3D computer monitors, while the halls inside were lined with the latest CINEMA 3D TVs broadcasting the entire event live in 3D.

At the “experience zone” at the Paris launch event, visitors had a chance to see for themselves the difference between CINEMA 3D and older technologies.

The other side of the Palais was transformed into a breathtaking 3D movie theater, with space for 1,500 viewers. LG in fact set two world records that night: the biggest ever 3D movie screening, and the largest 3D projection screen (27 meters by 11 meters).

In keeping with the theatrical atmosphere, we hired Isabelle Giordano, a prominent move critic, to host the show, and invited along actor Sophie Marceau, director Claude Lelouch, and a host of other top French celebrities. There were turns from French magician Dani Lary and Brazilian dance troupe Brasilian Ambience. And, of course, we screened the 3D animation blockbuster RIO, which had opened just a few weeks prior to the event.

Managing the entire event, which also included a daytime show for press and sales staff, was a formidable undertaking. Adding to the fun were the cultural differences between our teams from Korea and the French staff on the ground. In one nail-biting example, we encountered difficulties when testing the 3D videos before the main event.

With just two hours remaining in which to fix it, the technical staff went for lunch for a little over an hour. But when they came back, with 30 minutes to spare, they promptly fixed the equipment right up, and it worked perfectly. Among many other things, we learned that the French style of doing things – though very different from ours in Korea! – can work wonders.

To see a French national monument turned into a huge LG showcase, to see jaws dropping among our illustrious guests, and to see the pride on the faces of the LG staff, are things that will stay with me for a long time to come. One person told me she’d been to the Grand Palais many times, but had never imagined this “3D playground” could turn it into something even more spectacular. It was a fantastic effort from everyone involved, and I’d like to thank everyone – the France team, the teams from HQ, the wonderful media, sales staff and guests – for helping make a little piece of LG history.

Flickered Images vs. Flicker-free Images

3D TVs (SG Type; Shutter Glasses Type) continuously shut the left and right lenses of the 3D glasses to generate 3D images. The continuous shutting off and on of the left and right lenses subconsciously affects the vision and the viewers’ eyes may experience stress, or even dizziness and nausea. Also after the glasses shut off and back on, the left and right images overlap with each other, causing the crosstalk.

But, LG CINEMA 3D TV is free from flickering and crosstalk, and is so much easier on your eyes. Unlike conventional 3D TVs, LG CINEMA 3D TV uses an advanced technique that places a special polarized film on the TV panel itself rather than using the old shutter method. LG CINEMA 3D TVs have been certified by TÜV and Intertek as the world’s first Flicker-Free 3D TVs.

Heavy Glasses vs. Light & Comfortable Glasses

3D TV (SG Type) glasses were heavy for technical reasons. Because the glasses have to receive visual transmissions from the TV, they require a separate device to receive the signals. They also need batteries, which of course makes them significantly heavier. Even slightly weighty regular glasses are uncomfortable after a certain amount of time, and the 3D glasses weigh much more than those. Watching TV with such heavy glasses can get very uncomfortable after a long time, and who really wants that when watching TV?

LG CINEMA 3D TV glasses, however, weigh less than half the weight of conventional 3D TV glasses. The main difference is that, with the FPR, there is no longer any need for signals to be sent back and forth from the TV to the glasses, meaning that the glasses are completely free of electrical parts or batteries. On top of that, LG even developed clip-on lenses for consumers who wear prescription glasses. In this way, LG CINEMA 3D TV enables perfectly comfortable viewing experience, which is of course what watching TV should really be like.

Darkened 3D Images vs. Bright 3D Images

Most of you may have experienced that sometimes when watching 3D images, the same content may seem darker compared to 2D images. This happens in conventional 3D TVs (SG Type) that use constantly flickering shutter glasses, which also have black panels to resolve image blurring. In conclusion, both the 3D TV monitor and the glasses make the original image darker than it really is.

But, LG CINEMA 3D TV shows brighter 3D pictures. Furthermore, with 3D Light Boost, which is a thin film that is attached to the panel, the light from the backlight unit is maximized, delivering images that are almost 2 times brighter than conventional 3D TVs.

And unlike conventional 3D TVs, which only generate 50 frames (50Hz) of 3D images, the LG CINEMA 3D TV can generate up to 200 frames (200Hz) per second. Thus, CINEMA 3D TV generates four times as many images compared to conventional 3D TVs, realizing smoother, better, and higher quality 3D images.

Restricted Viewing Position vs. Flexible Viewing Position

Another downside of conventional 3D TVs is that when people watch, they have to sit in an upright position. Because the TV and glasses had to constantly communicate with each other, turning the angle of the glasses would interrupt the signal and that would affect the 3D images.

On the other hand, CINEMA 3D TV with FPR technology does not require the TV monitor and glasses to send signals back and forth, so you can enjoy watching 3D content lying down or leaning back on the couch! The flexible viewing positions in other words mean that you can comfortably enjoy watching 3D TVs in any angle or position. For example when you’re watching 3D TV with your friends on conventional 3D TVs, everyone had to gather around the center to watch properly. But with LG CINEMA 3D TV, everyone can relax and experience pleasant 3D TV viewing.

On a typical weekday, Linda Gomez, a 33-year-old working mother of two, gets up at 6:30 a.m. She wanders down to the kitchen and checks the food management display on her smart refrigerators to look over the day’s breakfast options. The readout shows her where she can find leftovers, which foods are nearing their expiry dates, and even suggests healthy meal combinations.

At 2:40pm, after lunching with a friend, Linda goes grocery shopping. While out at the store, she realizes that she clean forgot her shopping list. But that’s no problem: all she has to do is bring out her smartphone, open up her Smart Manager app and the fridge will tell her what she’s got and what she needs.

This story may sound like science fiction, but it is in fact already possible. Starting with the Korean launch of its smart refrigerator, the first of its kind in the industry, on April 19, LG will be rolling out a full spectrum of smart appliances including the smart refrigerator, smart robotic vacuum cleaner and smart oven. Smart refrigerator and smart washing machine will also be released globally within the end of this year, including in the U.S., where official Smart Grid policies should be up and running.

The smart life of smart appliances was first unveiled at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where the LG display showed that these ultra-intelligent home appliances are set to become a part of our lives sooner than we think.

LG had an impressive showing at CES 2011, with appliances that put it at the forefront of the drive to make homes more intelligent. The company used CES to re-emphasize its vision of the “total smart solution.”

LG has utilized its THINQ^TM technology as the backbone of its smart appliance networking system. It works with Wi-Fi and ZigBee to link each device into a manageable control structure. This lets users monitor their appliances and designate tasks from their portable smart devices such as smartphones or tablets.

The THINQ^TM management framework is comprised of five interconnected features: Smart Grid, Smart Access, Smart Diagnosis, Smart Adapt, and Smart Manager.

Smart Grid, the smartest way to save energy

The Smart Grid takes advantage of time-varying energy rates, using more power when energy rates are at their lowest, and powering down the appliance when rates go up. The system also runs energy cycles more efficiently to reduce the time needed for each task, further helping the appliance to use less energy than conventional appliances. This means that Smart Grid appliances aren’t just budget-friendly, they’re eco-friendly, too.

For example, using “Recommend Time” and “Lowest Rate” options, LG’s Smart Grid can program washing machines to do the washing at the most cost-effective times. LG’s ovens also tap into the Smart Grid to offer varying cost options that take into account the duration and electrical cost of the cooking. Similarly, LG’s refrigerators can adjust their functions to save on energy bills at peak times, or ramp up cooling power when energy rates are low.

Smart Diagnosis, a smart problem solver

LG’s Smart Diagnosis function was developed based on findings that non-technical problems – which can be solved through a few simple instructions – account for between 30 and 50 percent of all requests to service centers.

LG’s Smart Diagnosis provides two immediate benefits: First, when small problems appear, it alerts the owner and suggests courses of action to get the appliance back up and running as quickly as possible. Second, if a bigger problem occurs, the smart appliance sends data to a call center, where staff can identify the problem over the phone. Oftentimes, this will mean they can fix the problem remotely, so they won’t have to bother you with repeat visits from a technician.

All told, Smart Diagnosis gives real benefits to consumers, saving them huge amounts of time and the hassle of fixing their schedule around repairs or home visits.

Smart Access, empowering the consumer

Smart Access links users to home appliances via mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Tasks like washing machine or dryer cycles can all be started remotely, and information such as refrigerator inventories can be accessed while at the grocery store or local market, meaning no more paper shopping lists or accidental double-purchases.

Smart Adapt, the ultimate update provider

Smart Adapt lets consumers update appliance software and download applications to keep the system up-to-date without having to buy a new machine. The downloads include everything from important software additions to recipes to new spin cycle programs.

Smart Manager, easier fridge control

Consumer insight studies show that up to 30 percent of consumers have to throw away bad or out-of-date food on a regular basis, a result of our ultra-busy lifestyles that leave no time to properly take care of what’s in the kitchen. Worse, consumers are grocery shopping less frequently, so the food they have is more likely to go bad or pass its expiry date.

To address all these problems, Smart Manager, LG’s food management system, lets users know what is in their fridge, where it is and when it expires. This information is accessible via smartphones or tablets through Smart Access, so users can have it at their fingertips when they are out grocery shopping or eating at a restaurant, figuring out how to copy the chef’s specialty. Smart Manager can even recommend healthy recipes based on what foods you’ve got left in the fridge.

It’s not too often that home appliances grab this much attention, but LG’s smart appliances have been doing just that with a vision of homes that do almost everything for you. Though the smart appliance market is only just beginning, Pike Research predicts it will account for USD 509 million in 2011, growing to USD 6.2 billion by 2015. With smart appliances expected to completely replace traditional machines by 2020, soon enough, we may all be living like Linda.

LG’s Hope for Japan

At 2:46 p.m. local time on March 11, 2011, seawater crashed through the seaside village of Kesennuma, Miyagi prefecture, sweeping rows of cars away in its destructive path. As sirens wailed to warn locals to evacuate, rising waves smashed into warehouses and homes, leveling them as they went. In just five minutes this small and once peaceful village was completely swallowed up by a tsunami borne of Japan’s catastrophic earthquake, which registered 8.9 on the Richter scale

Its tip was severely bent in the earthquake.

The tsunami reached a staggering 37.9 meters, the highest since 38.2-meter waves devastated Ofunato in Iwate prefecture in 1896. This time, the disaster left tens of thousands dead or missing and hundreds of thousands displaced.

According to the Japanese Maritime Safety Agency, the earthquake shifted the ocean floor near the epicenter by 24 meters, and raised the ocean bed off the coast of Miyagi prefecture by 3 meters. Experts estimate the catastrophe could shave 1 percent off Japan’s GDP this year, while the World Bank thinks it will cost as much as USD 235 billion to rebuild the country.

In a great outpouring of public sympathy, countries from around the world immediately sent their sympathy and assistance – from close friends like the United States, to the Afghan city of Kandahar, to China, with whom Japan has sometimes had strained relations. All told, some 133 countries and 33 international bodies had pledged help by March 24, with many more set to join them.

Numerous companies also helped out with the relief efforts, with LG playing its part, too. From March 21 to 31, LG staff joined forces to raise funds for the earthquake victims under the banner of “Hope for Japan.”

Looking to lend a helping hand, LG staff held a number of events to raise funds. At LG premises throughout Korea, they held “one-day cafes” in staff canteens where they sold “Coffee for Hope for Japan.” They wrote messages of support on big banners in Korean, English and Japanese, which they sent to LG’s partners in Japan along with the money the workers had raised.

Hundreds of LG workers contributed to relief funds to help Japan, its closest neighbor, which is still reeling from the effects of a devastating earthquake.

On a corporate level, LG is also working closely with its partners in Japan to ensure that disruptions to all their businesses are kept to a minimum, and they can return to full production as soon as possible. LG Group also joined forces to donate 100 million yen to relief operations in Japan

The whole world is sending messages of encouragement to Japan.

When a disaster of this magnitude strikes, not even a country as developed as Japan can cope without help. But as much as the food aid, the blankets and the aid are appreciated, the prayers and good wishes mean so much too. As Japan continues its long road to recovery, please keep its people in mind and continue to donate and pray for Japan.

Cameron Sees the Future in 3D

In the global movie industry, James Cameron is Mr. 3D. In 2009, the director of such megahits as Aliens and Terminator turned his attention to this under-used form and revolutionized it with his sci-fi smash Avatar. Telling the story of a clash between resource-hungry humans and blue aliens on the far-off planet of Pandora, Avatar redefined 3D technology, and surpassed Titanic – another Cameron movie – to become the highest grossing film of all time.

Cameron has been a staunch advocate of 3D home entertainment too, predicting it will become a standard feature on TV sets around the world. During a keynote speech at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), held in Las Vegas from April 9 to 14, Cameron said he believed less expensive polarized glasses would accelerate the adoption of 3D technology into the home.

Cameron’s remarks came at a critical time in the nascent 3D TV market. Since the initial launch of 3D TVs early last year, the market has been dominated by SG-type technology, a position that is only now being challenged by what is widely known as “polarized” or “passive” technology.

LG is among the pioneers in this newer form of 3D, with a range of TVs called CINEMA 3D, which use LG’s own Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology. LG unveiled its next generation CINEMA 3D TVs for the first time at CES 2011, held in Las Vegas from January 6 to 9.

LG’s FPR technology addresses the major shortcomings of SG-type sets. The picture practically eliminates the flicker and crosstalk that could cause discomfort or even nausea on previous 3D TVs, while the comfortable, lightweight glasses won’t get tiresome even for epics like Avatar. CINEMA 3D glasses also typically run to about USD 10 per pair, a fraction of the cost of SG-type eyewear.

In his speech, Cameron predicted a world in which 3D is standard, and where viewers demand 3D in the way they “used to demand color.” As 3D does become a more standard feature on TVs in the years ahead, technology such as LG’s will be key in helping it get there, with a 3D experience that is as smooth, comfortable and accessible as it is spectacular.

Beside the launch of our new LG Optimus 2X and Optimus Black at the 2011 MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX RACE held from 8th - 10th April, we also showcased our latest 3D technology.

In order to put the theory to test, we set up a Cinema 3D comparison booth whereby consumers can experience the 3D Technology for themselves. Both the TV sets were sealed so that consumers won’t be able to tell the difference. Then after, consumers who have tested both the TV were required to fill out a short survey indicating which TV is better in terms of its features.

Short interviews were done with some of the consumers who have tested the TV and most of their responses were that our LG Cinema 3D was better in terms of the 3D picture quality and its lightweight glasses.

Ms. Chen, one of the consumers that was interviewed, after viewing both the TV immediately felt that “B” was better in terms of the 3D quality. The 3D element seems more realistic and asked when will it be out in the market?

Husband and Wife, Mr & Mrs Tilly from the UK (a couple that I’ve personally interviewed) had a go at both the TVs and found that there were distinct difference in terms of the 3D picture quality on TV “B”. Also, they felt that the LG glasses were more comfortable & lighter in comparison with our competitor.

Encik Zul, when putting on the competitor’s glasses, one of our LG staff asked him to tilt his head and he found that the picture on TV "A" black out for a bit and could no longer see the 3D effect. When he put on LG’s glasses, he did the same thing but this time the 3D picture on TV 'B" was not affected. Encik Zul agreed that LG had a better flexible viewing angle.

In total, there were 340 survey forms filled out by consumers and 82% said that LG 3D Cinema TV is better. Questions asked were:

1. Which TV is FLICKER FREE?
100% answered TV B, which is LG's 3D Cinema TV

2. Which 3D glasses are more lighter and comfortable?
100% answered TV B, which is LG's 3D Cinema TV

3. Which 3D TV Image is brighter and clearer?

12% answered TV A, which is our competitor's 3D TV, while 88% answered TV B, which is LG's 3D Cinema TV

4. Which TV has a Flexible viewing angle?
5% answered TV A, which is our competitor's 3D TV, while 95% answered TV B, which is LG's 3D Cinema TV

Optimus Family Wows CTIA 2011

At CTIA 2011 in warm Orlando, Florida, the LG booth was the place to be. The gorgeous red and white displays and brilliant lighting set the booth apart from the rest, but the real standouts were the new devices and technologies on display. There wasn’t a dull moment with Diane, our infamous DJ, keeping the energy up and attendees rocking out as they checked out everything LG has to offer.

Held from March 22 to 24, CTIA 2011 attracted tech heads and mobile geeks from all around the world.

LG’s eye-catching red and white booth was a big hit at CITA 2011.

While it did share the stage with other amazing devices, 3D technology was one of the highlights of the LG booth this year. On one side of the booth was the LG Optimus 3D (now also known as the LG Thrill 4G with AT&T) which allows for 720p HD 3D video capture and 3D playback. The kicker? No 3D glasses are necessary to watch 3D content on this device, thanks to a little thing called the Parallax Barrier. You've gotta try this out, it's insane. The LG Thrill 4G has many more features, like dual core processing, dual memory and dual channel capabilities.

Another amazing device LG showcased at CTIA 2011 was the T-Mobile G-Slate with Google, one of the world's first 4G Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablets. The T-Mobile G-Slate is capable of shooting and playing back its own 3D content. This device comes with a free pair of anaglyph glasses to easily view self-captured content right on the device itself – or on any HD TV! You can also watch that same content with stereoscopic glasses on compatible TVs. Not looking to shoot in 3D? Don't worry – you can also shoot in full 1080p HD.

Attendees could even see themselves in 3D on the many 42-inch LG TVs throughout the booth as they interacted with the various first-to-market LG products.

Now, let's talk dual-core. The T-Mobile G-Slate with Google by LG is packing the 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, as is the all new T-Mobile G2x with Google by LG. This fantastic device was also one of the stars of the show this year because of its sleek exterior and superior features - it has a gorgeous 4” screen and allows for 1080p full HD recording and playback. It also has an 8 megapixel rear camera with flash to capture beautiful still shots.

How about the 4G LTE LG Revolution? You might have seen this at CES this year, but here at CTIA we were able to see this device up close and in action. This Verizon Wireless device has a huge 4.3-inch WVGA TFT screen and runs on a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. It has 16GB of internal memory, expandable up to 32GB, and on top of that, the LG Revolution is a complete 720p HD solution allowing for 720p HD video recording and playback.

Visitors finally get the chance to see and touch the LG Revolution for themselves.

All of the above devices were showcased during live product demonstrations in a one-on-one setting with an LG product trainer, as well as on the LG stage surrounded by 10 65-inch LG high definition rotating TVs. I gave these presentations throughout the show, alongside Martin Valdez, a product expert from LG Mobile's US headquarters in San Diego, California.

It seems that I'm not the only one who was excited about LG product at this year’s CTIA. LG-focused news articles have already appeared in top media outlets such as Cnet, the LA Times, USA Today, Consumer Reports Online, Bloomberg Online, Laptop Magazine, PC World, PC Magazine, TWICE Magazine, Huffington Post Online, Gizmodo Online, CNBC, Business Week, and MarketWatch.

Other devices on display included the full line of original Optimus devices and the Windows Phone 7 LG Quantum. Bluetooth accessories like the LG HBS-700, a headset that comfortably fits around your neck, rounded out our product line up.

This year is shaping up to be an amazing one for LG Mobile and it was great to celebrate at CTIA 2011. Upcoming months will bring new devices and continued innovation. LG Launches Optimus 2X and Introduces LG Optimus Black during the 2011 FORMULA ONE™ MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX RACE

In conjunction with the Formula One race at Sepang International Circuit last weekend, LG Malaysia officially launched the Optimus 2X, the world's first and fastest smartphone with a dual-core processor and at the same time unveiled the Optimus Black, the world's brightest 4-inch NOVA display in an ultra-slim 9.2 mm mobile device and creating a one-of-a-kind user experience unlike anything before.

The LG Optimus 2X offers 1080p HD video playback and recording with HDMI mirroring that expands content on external displays to full HD quality. The LG Optimus 2X can connect wirelessly to any DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatible digital device such as HD TVs for a console-like gaming experience taking full advantage of the phone’s content mirroring through HDMI, accelerometer and gyro sensor. The smartphone also includes rear and front-facing cameras, micro-SD memory expandability, Micro-USB port and a hefty 1500mAh battery.

LG worked with one of our local designer, Michael Ong to design an outfit that brings out the Optimus Black personality.

Besides its NOVA display, the LG Optimus Black also offers a set of smarter features designed for easy and faster access to important apps and content. Optimus UI 2.0 lets users directly access messages, emails and missed calls from the locked screen with just one single finger tap. The Gesture UI offers more intuitive commands, including lifting, shaking and tapping, for taking calls, entering camera mode, or enjoying music. LG Optimus Black also includes Wi-FI Direct for quick and high-quality data transfer between mobile devices and adopts the world's first 2MP front-facing camera.

2011 Formula 1 Season Gets Underway!

The Formula 1 season kicked off last weekend, and things couldn’t have started better for Red Bull driver and current world champion Sebastian Vettel. Leading throughout the race, Vettel took the checkered flag in the Australian Grand Prix to claim the first win of the season.

The German, the youngest ever Formula 1 champion, held off the challenge of Britain’s Lewis Hamilton, who took second place. Driving for Renault, Vitaly Petrov made history when his third place finish made him the first Russian to ever take a spot on the Formula 1 winners’ podium. With Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso coming fourth, the top four spots were taken by four different teams.

Tires had been a big source of debate prior to the race, as pundits and fans wondered how the new Pirelli tires would hold up in the world’s premier motor racing competition. The worries proved largely unfounded, however, with rookie Sergio Perez managing to complete the race with just a single tire change, rather than the four that some had been predicting.

LG-partner Team Lotus didn’t fare as well unfortunately; Jarno Trulli finished second-before-last while team-mate Heikki Kovalainen retired after 19 of the 58-lap race with a water leak.

With one race gone, Vettel leads the drivers’ championship on 25, followed by Hamilton on 18, Petrov on 15 and Alonso on 12. Red Bull is also top in the constructors, championship with 35 points, with McLaren, Ferrari and Renault rounding out the top four.

For the third season in a row, commentators and fans could watch the action unfold on LG monitors positioned around the course. LG is once again an official global partner for Formula 1 this year, and the company had a big presence in the F1 media center and commentary booths.
