Memorable Moments

As stated in my previous blog post, Ho Ho Ho!, I made lots of photos of Lewisville’s 32nd Annual Christmas Parade (held on Sunday, December 11, 2016). Although it took longer than I’d hoped to process all the photos — I confess I’m a bit picky — they’re finally ready to be shared.

Fire vehicles and a marching band make their way through Lewisville as a child with a Santa cap rushes to pick up candy in the street.

I began photographing where the parade started, in front of Lewisville United Methodist Church, and I eventually made my way to Shallowford Square, where I remained until Santa Claus passed by.

While it’s true that I didn’t actually want to walk any further than that, I mainly realized that Shallowford Square, with its border of lighted trees, could provide a really nice photographic backdrop. But enough of this chatter — let’s get to the photos!

This red beauty with the blue “Merry Christmas” decoration was one of many classic and antique cars riding in the parade.

Reagan High School’s Marching Band was decked out in a variety of Christmas sweaters.

The Lewisville Area Arts Council (LAAC) continues to play a significant role in promoting Lewisville’s Annual Christmas Parade.

Santa Claus returns to Lewisville’s Christmas Parade.

Lewisville’s 32nd Annual Christmas Parade

The Lewisville Civic Club hosted its 32nd Annual Christmas Parade on Sunday, December 11, 2016.

Directed by Maureen Barton, the parade featured lots of floats, several local high school marching bands, dance and drill teams, veterans, horses, dogs, fire trucks, military vehicles and classic and antique automobiles.

Lewisville’s main thoroughfare was packed with people — children, parents and adults of all ages. (Many folks had staked out their parade spot more than an hour ahead of time.)

With Christmas music playing at Shallowford Square prior to the parade’s start, anticipation was building as the three o’clock hour approached. And once the parade got underway, children — and many adults — just couldn’t get enough of the candy that parade participants tossed their way.

Without a doubt, in a little over an hour, Lewisville’s Christmas Parade was everything that makes a community parade a special experience.

Beautiful morning light bathes an old spruced-up tobacco barn along Shallowford Road in Lewisville, North Carolina.

Rapturous Light

Although cloudy, overcast days possess their own kind of beauty, for me, it’s the brilliant light of early morning and late evening that stirs my soul and my imagination. I long to capture what such rapturous light evokes within me. Although that quest seems nearly impossible, still I try.

One recent morning, light was working its magic seemingly everywhere I looked. As I rounded a wide curve on Shallowford Road, not far from NC Highway 421, this old, now-spruced-up tobacco barn caught my eye. So I pulled over and began photographing it.

From a distance, I crouched down to take a low-angle shot of the old tobacco barn.

“No Trespassing”

I had actually photographed this barn several years ago, but there was just one problem now: a “No Trespassing” sign was staring me in the face. “I guess I just can’t freely walk up to the barn like I did before, huh?”

I confess that, for a few moments, I considered officially “breaking the law” — just so I could capture some closeups of that rustic old barn, the horse-drawn carriage out front and whatever other visual delights might be waiting there.

I pondered trespassing, and almost gave way to the gnawing urge.

Imagination

But my vivid imagination already had me envisioning myself sitting in jail if I dared to step foot onto forbidden territory. So, reluctantly, I remained on the property’s edge and relied on my wide-angle and long lenses to capture, from a distance, the essence of the place and the moment.

Isn’t that interplay of light and shadows captivating?

The weather-beaten boards add texture, while the red tin roof creates an artful accent.

The U.S. flag adds a patriotic touch.

Who Knows?

Perhaps one day I’ll venture closer, either with all-out abandon — or maybe even permission! Till then, I hope you’ve enjoyed these few photos of an intriguing old tobacco barn bathed in glorious morning light.
