Name: Möbius Hi

What do shoes, love, and architecture, have in common? Without a firm foundation, it won’t last.

Rem D. Koolhaas knows this.  Reeling and heartbroken from a recent breakup, Koolhaas threw his energies into making a shoe with the aesthetic inspiration taken from his design background and upbringing by father, famed architect, of the same name.  Attempting to “down[size] architecture to its smallest and most vulnerable scale…of a woman’s foot,” the Möbius Hi by United Nude was born.  The minimalist sandal owes its name to the geometric surface, the möbius.  A möbius strip is a simple closed band that can be twisted to create a variety of loops.  It is often used throughout art and architecture, it could have even inspired Koolhaas Sr. in his Educatorium building in Utrecht, Netherlands.

The heel, foot-bed, and upper of the Möbius Hi shoe is comprised conceptually of a single strip of leather and despite its open and simplistic design, the fiber glass foundation ensures its structural soundness.  The Möbius Hi was Koolhaas’s first foray into footwear, and it earned him the 2003 Rotterdam Design Award.  Since then, he and partner, Galahad Clark, formed United Nude.  They just celebrated their 10-Year Anniversary last week in their flagship New York SoHo store, and even decade later, the pair continue to push boundaries of design and turn the world of wearable art and design on its er, feet.
