John Pomp, founder and principal of john pomp studios, is from a small steel town in western pennsylvania. his father is a carpenter and for many years worked in the steel mills in the area. being surrounded by fine craftsmanship, he found his way to glassblowing through his art teacher/sculptor and good friend whom he studied with for many years. after being schooled in the venetian art of glassblowing by maestros from murano italy, pomp spent most of his early career in nyc where he gained most of his notoriety with his blown glass and lighting. a move to the city of brotherly love/invention this past year has spawned a new furniture, lighting, and accessories collection created primarily from steel, that was inspired by his personal history and ties to his home town. each piece of furniture and lighting is meticulously crafted by hand in our multi-disciplinary studios in philadelphia. john pomp studios work exemplifies the purity of natural materials while embracing their inherent historical and elemental qualities, yielding a simple, classic modern aesthetic.

“Kinetic Rain” is composed of two parts, each consisting of 608 rain droplets made of lightweight aluminum covered with copper. Suspended from thin steel ropes above the two opposing escalators, each droplet is moved precisely and seemingly floating by a computer-controlled motor hidden in the halls ceiling. The drops follow a 15-minute, computationally designed choreography where the two parts move together in unison, sometimes mirroring, sometimes complementing, and sometimes responding to each other. On August 27, 2011, the Billabong Pro Tahiti event on surfing's World Tour was placed on hold due to a massive swell bearing down on the famed big-wave spot, Teahupoo. With forecasts calling for unprecedented surf, some of the greatest surfers in the world descended on the island to be in the water, despite a "Code Red" called by the Tahitian Coast Guard, which sought to keep everyone on shore. See the historic day through the eyes of two surfers -- the young gun Laurie Towner and the veteran Dylan Longbottom -- as they catch some of the biggest, most dangerous surf ever recorded, much of it captured with the super slow motion Phantom Camera for never-before-seen imagery.
