Windows Blue promises to build and improve upon these aspects of the OS, enhancing ease of use and the overall user experience on devices and PCs worldwide.

According to reports coming in, the next major update to Windows 8 ecosystem codenamed Windows Blue will be available for consumers towards the middle of this year. However, some people rumored about a possible release around the end of June 2013.

When contacted, Microsoft official spokesperson refused to either comment or disclose any information related to Windows Blue.

Microsoft is really fighting hard in its quest to compete with Apple and Google in both desktop and mobile technology space. Windows 8 PCs are not able to attain significant boost in sales due to complete change in its user interface which some people doesn’t like it very much.

Learnxpress feels that Microsoft has realized this situation and hence working on an update which increases the usability and productivity of consumers while working with Windows 8.

“Windows Blue could have a profound impact on the marketplace especially if it helps Microsoft finally get Windows 8 into more offices and homes,” said Don Reisinger, eweek.com

According to Don, Windows 8 isn’t appealing to consumers.

Learnxpress doesn’t agree completely to the above statement as different people will have different taste and preferences. Some people like it while some doesn’t. It’s purely a personal preference which we can’t judge completely unless a survey is conducted.

Consumers who attempt to try Windows 8 should have used previous versions of Windows which has the traditional Start button on the TaskBar. Windows 8 doesn’t include Start button. It remains to be seem whether Windows Blue will ship with an option to enable the Start menu although third party tools such as Pokki are currently available.

Don is of the opinion that corporate consumers will not like the new user interface and blue attempts to address that problem with some improvements that will appeal to enterprise users.

“Windows Blue will have better upgraded apps and will tweak the user experience by eliminating all of the extras in the interface that they don’t need,” mentions Don in his blog post.

The big rumor spreading across the web is that Windows Blue will ship with Bing search engine fully integrated into it. However, federal regulators will keep a close watch as it will possibly affect the consumer’s freedom in choosing their desired search engine.

According to reports, Blue will provide support for small tablet screen sizes such as 7 and 8 inch displays. Learnxpress feels that Microsoft will probably release a mini version of Surface tablet by the end of this year including a possibility of a Surface phone with Windows Phone 8.

According to reports, Microsoft will release Windows Blue as a free add-on to Windows 8 just like updates and service pack to its previous counterparts. However, industry experts feel that this will put pressure on Apple as they charge around $20 for its software updates.

Windows 8 generated publicity when it was released last year but some consumers are still happy with Windows 7. With the release of Windows Blue, consumers will have renewed interest to test drive Windows 8 to see what Blue has to offer.

“Windows Blue will follow the Office 365 subscription model. When your subscription is up, you are locked out from all internet access except to pay by credit card or Paypal at a Microsoft web site,” said Ben Myers.

According to Win8China.com, a public preview of Windows Blue is expected in June with the actual release scheduled for August. The site also claims that Windows Blue will be built on a new kernel with Internet Explorer 11.

Learnxpress : Do you think kids are smart enough to learn programming languages such as C#?

Definitely. I just had my 11 and 14 year old boys take the Teaching Kids Programming (TKP) in C# course and they had no issues.

The important thing is not so much the language you choose but rather “how” you choose to teach it. Lynn and Llewellyn use the intentional method of learning, where they ask children to translate English into code one line at a time. They ask the kids to make certain things happen (the intention) without explaining exactly how to do it and they guide the children in figuring it out.

It’s a very effective and compelling way of learning. The TKP courseware is also available in Java and Small Basic, but Pluralsight only has the C# course available right now. However, we do intend to cover many different languages, as illustrated by our Scratch programming course for kids.

The Scratch course is designed for kids to go through by themselves (independently) whereas the TKP course is designed for parents or teachers to do with the children (as the mentor).

Although guiding kids through the TKP course is most effective, kids can also go through the TKP course on their own, which is what my own son did last night. He finished the entire course in a few hours.

Follow the steps mentioned below to create a password reset disk.

You should format and insert either a new Pen Drive or a Floppy Disk before proceeding further.

When you forget the password, you simply need to insert the password reset disk which you created now during the booting phase and Windows will automatically prompt you to enter a new password.

In order to activate Windows Flip, you should select ALT+TAB key combination. As soon as you click on the keys, a live thumbnails of all the active windows will be displayed in the middle of the screen.

On the other hand, Windows Flip 3D creates a three dimensional view of all the open windows. In order to activate Windows Flip 3D, you need to press CTRL+START (With Windows Logo) +TAB key combination. You will view a three dimensional stack of all open windows as shown below

You can press TAB key to cycle through all the Windows. As you can observe from the above explanation, Windows Flip and Windows Flip 3D are completely different and you will know its difference only if you practically work with it once.

Windows 7 is designed to work faster and the above feature will be useful for all users if they understood the logic behind them.

You will have to empty the files from recycle bin once in a week to free up the accumulated disk space. Normally, you will find an icon named Recycle Bin on the desktop. But sometimes you will not be able to view an icon on the desktop with the label Recycle Bin.

Follow the steps given below to locate Recycle Bin and to empty the contents on it in Windows 7

(1) Right click on the Taskbar and select Toolbars | Desktop option.

With the help of Aero Taskbar Color Changer, you can easily modify the Taskbar color. The product is available free of cost as a single ZIP package. Inside the package, you will find an executable file named Aero Taskbar Color Changer.exe. You should just double click it in order to use the color changer. However, the color of the Taskbar will change only if you enabled Aero based Windows 7 theme.

Right click on an empty area of the desktop and select Personalize. You will view a pop up menu as shown below

You will be able to view a new screen with several options as shown in Figure 2.

As you can see there are lot of themes installed. The themes displayed under Aero Themes panel are installed by default. If you install a new theme available from other sources then they will appear under My Themes panel. You can modify Sounds and Screen Savers from the same window. Moreover, you can directly navigate to Control Panel and modify desktop icons, mouse pointers and account picture from the Personalize window.

Windows 7 completely changed the way in which users access the various options. I hope the upcoming Windows 8 will also provide new features, which will further simplify the usage of one of the most popular operating systems.

The author has examined the concepts in a comprehensive manner with tables, relevant code samples followed by a short description. Each chapter also includes set of exercises which will help learners especially students to brush up their skills.

The publisher provides free sample chapters, which you can read before making a purchase decision. You can also download code samples discussed on the book from the publishers website. Sometimes, you might have installed multiple devices but the Devices and Printers page will not list the devices upon opening it. This means that Devices and Printers Page is Not Loading in Windows 7. The problem is not with your devices but your computer is not able to properly communicate between your devices.

You can easily fix the problem by restarting the Print Spoller from the Services page as mentioned in the steps given below

(1) Click Start

(2) Enter Services on the Search box located on the bottom

(3) You will view Component Services page

(4) Click Services (Local)

(5) Scroll down and locate Print Spooler service

(6) Right click on Print Spooler and select Restart from the Popup menu.

Reload Devices and Printers page and you should now be able to view a list of all devices.

You can locate Windows Defender inside Control Panel. You will view a screen as shown below

Please note that time required to perform a scan varies depending upon the configuration of your computer. The scan time will be less in high end systems such as powered with Intel Corei7 Processor.

Sometimes, you will not be able to access the site even after few days. But visitors will be able to access your site without any problem from other locations.

The problem is with your PC’s local DNS as it might cache the old DNS info and prohibit you from accessing the site from new server.

In order to fix the problem, run the following command from the command (DOS) prompt

IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS  

To access command prompt, click the Start menu and enter cmd in the search box.

The above command will most likely resolve the problem. You can also clear the browser cache but it is not required in most instances.

Follow the steps mentioned below to uninstall an installed program

(1) Click Start menu icon

(2) Select the option – Control Panel

(3) You should view a list of items starting with Action Center

(4) Select the option – Programs and Features

(5) You will view a list of programs which are installed on your computer with the title – Uninstall or change a program

(6) Select a program name which needs to be uninstalled and select the link with the title – Uninstall

(7) Alternatively, you can also activate the menu option by selecting the drop down link with the title – Organize and selecting Menu bar from the Layout menu.

(8) You will view a menu bar on the top of the Control Panel screen as soon as you activate the menu bar.

You can delete each bookmark one by one but it be an tedious operation especially if you need to delete 100′s of them. Hence, you need to find a simple way, which is navigating directly to the Favorite folder and deleting the bookmark entries. Follow the steps mentioned below

(1) Navigate to <YOUR_DRIVE_LETTER>:\Users\<YOUR_USER_NAME>\Favorites

Note: Replace YOUR_DRIVE_LETTER & YOUR_USER_NAME with appropriate values.

(2) You will find bookmark entries. If you had saved them by creating folders, you need to open the relevant folder

(3) Delete the required bookmark entries

Moreover, shortcuts to all major applications are attached to the  Taskbar. In Windows 7 parlance, the word attach means Pinned. You can easily modify the default settings of Taskbar from the Control Panel.

As you can see, it is possible to lock and Auto-hide the Taskbar. The Auto-hide feature will be very useful if you need to capture screenshots, videos etc. You can also convert the default icons to small icons by selecting Use small icons option.

It is also possible to change the location of Taskbar. The default is Bottom but you can change to Left, Right and Top if required.

By default, Taskbar buttons appear as icons with hidden labels. However, you can enable labels by selecting combine when taskbar is full option.

While shared hosting is recommended for small to medium sized websites, VPS are generally suitable for those who have high traffic sites. Normally, shared hosting providers will not allow you to consume more than allocated resource in terms of CPU but with VPS your website can consume the full allocated resource.

In order to install an operating system on your VPS you should have full rights to the remote web server. Generally, VPS providers provide numerous templates with which you can install your favourite operating system without using any complex shell commands.

You can access the templates by logging into SolusVM panel provided by your VPS provider. Please note that it is not possible to install Windows Operating System with SolusVM panel.

In order to install Windows Server, you should submit a request to your hosting provider who will reinstall Windows for you.

You can then login to remote server using Remote Desktop Terminal, which ships with Windows 7 and install SQL Server Express, Control Panel of your choice and much more.

Points to Note

A Windows VPS consumes more resources than a Linux VPS. Hence, you have to purchase a VPS with more RAM. It is not possible to burst RAM if the allocated memory exceeds the limit in Windows. If you want to host a site with ASP, ASP.NET combined with SQL Server then you should purchase a Windows VPS.

A Linux VPS is more resource friendly if you make use of CentOS and Lighttpd server. Apache consumes slightly more memory but will be suitable for sites with less traffic.   Linux VPS is cheaper than Windows VPS.

Follow the steps mentioned below to adjust the resolution of your screen

(1) Right click on the desktop and select Personalize

You have to delete all unncecessary pending posts regularly and can be done either using a plugin like Bulk Delete or manyally from PHPMyAdmin.

You can make use of Bulk Delete WordPress plugin if the total number of pending posts is less than 50. If there are more than 100 pending posts, it is better to make use of SQL Commands from within PHPMyAdmin.

1) Login to PHPMyAdmin

2) Select your database

DELETE FROM wp_posts WHERE post_status = "pending";

With the release of 2011.3 version the WebViewer component has greatly changed and has become almost like a brand new one. It has been completely rewritten starting with a super new menu, and ending with support for a wide range of interface themes. The new WebViewer was fully tested on all browsers and mobile platforms.

The StiWebViewer component also has a new panel of variables to request parameters. It has a convenient interface that allows the user to easily enter complex settings, such as lists, editable lists with a variable number of elements, and ranges of data types.

For the Date type a comfortable DatePicker (calendar) was implemented. Now there is no need to enter the date manually. When sending data from a panel of variables or resetting to the initial values, changes in the report occur without reloading the page. Also, a new panel of variables is made in accordance with the new design of the WebViewer.

The new version supports the Cross-tab component in Reports.Silverlight. The Cross-tab component is used for processing, grouping and summarizing data from a data source. The results are represented as a table.

Since the last release report-importing utilities have been revised. The developers of Stimulsoft dramatically improved their performance. Much work has been done on importing utilities such as Import.ActiveReports, Import.CrystalReports, Import.MicrosoftReportingServices.

The utility Report Checker, designed to check reports for errors, now provides detailed reports in German (earlier, it only supported Russian and English).

Support for Business Objects is added to all the report wizards used for report designing. This allows them to be used in full strength.

Very often the inbuilt numerical formatting in C# will be insufficent and you will want to apply the custom formatting for your numbers.

The String.Format method is very flexible and can be used to apply custom formatting rules. The # character informs the Format method how to format the numerical value, for example to forma the number 12000.12 as 12,000.12 use can use the format “#,#.##” as in the below code:

In this example the , character is used to denote the thousand separator and the ## after the decimal place denotes that a maximum of 2 numbers should appear after the decimal place. Therefore the double 12000.1 would be formatted as 12,000.1, if you wish two decimals places always to be shown (ie 12,100.10 in this case) you should use the ’0′ character after the decimal place:

You can also add additional characters before and after the formatting string. Thus to format the value as $ 12,000.12 use the format string “$ #,#.##” , or even “#,#.## US Dollars” would output “12,000.12 US Dollars”.

The % character will multiply the value by 100 and then add % character to the end of the string. Thus for the double value 12 the format string “{0:0.00 %}” will output “1200.00 %”. Note that you can use the # character in place of the 0 character as per the formatting rules above and so “#,#.## %” in this case would output “1,200 %”.

How fast is ultra-high speed? The project looks to bring speeds up to 1Gbps to these areas. At speeds this fast, an entire high-definition movie could be downloaded in mere seconds. With this type of bandwidth, Gig.U has implications for other data intensive applications.

Who Does It Benefit?

Not only will universities benefit from internet providers offering ultra-high speed internet, but energy, healthcare and telecommunications sectors may all benefit from increased speeds for research, collaboration and sending high resolution images. Currently, 29 universities have decided to participate in this project.

Universities such as Arizona State University, University of Kentucky, University of Chicago, University of Montana, Indiana University, University of New Mexico and West Virginia University are participating. The results of the project will be used to apply for capital and attract investors. The creators will also use the data gathered to design a better business model.

Why Start with Universities?

Universities are the breeding ground for young and sharp minds that are eager to learn new technology. Introducing this type of technology in a university environment will allow the leaders in research to test the network for its viability in the public and private sector. Many of the best companies have their roots from a university research lab or dorm room. University communities are often the building blocks for economic growth in America.

Though many universities also have ultra-high speed access on campus, many faculty and students do not have comparable networks when they need to accomplish tasks at home. This presents some logistical challenges for faculty trying to balance work and home life. Gig.U hopes to examine how to bridge the gap between the community and the university.

Is Gig.U a Valuable Service?

Experts are still researching the implications for Gig U’s high speed internet access in start-ups as well as other locations across the nation. Many argue that the services are redundant and overlap existing networks in more convenient areas. Because researchers still do not know the full extent of the effects of Gig.U, they continue to collaborate to determine how it can affect the workplace, community and university environments.

Medical diagnosing over the internet was one of the major developments made possible by increased bandwidth, and Gig.U hopes to build upon these efforts. Physicians even direct doctors during surgery via conferencing software with the highly reliable internet transfer.

Many students are also pleased to realize the implications of the Gig.U project in the gaming world and in other arenas as well. While the driving force behind the initiative is not to have students become expert gamers, stress relief brought out by smooth, interactive gameplay can be helpful. Gaming may also have rehabilitative notions in terms of improving hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

Students without ultra-high speed internet may find themselves at a disadvantage when compared with their fast-access counterparts. Slower connections mean added time for downloads, web browsing, file sharing, and academic research. Very realistically, assignments may take longer to finish, and fatigue may occur more frequently when the connection is slower and frustration levels rise. The quality of work could diminish as a result.

Conclusion

High speed internet is essential to the success of students and universities. Gig.U is gaining in popularity. With further progress, more universities will participate to improve the workplace and educational environment for more people. The more data points and fresh feedback that Gig.U obtains, the more beneficial the internet project will become for present and future generations.

There are primarily two main methods for measuring the memory usage of a .NET Framework application, using the GC class or using System.Diagnostics

The .NET Framework’s GC class contains many useful memory-related methods, including GetTotalMemory(), which returns the amount of memory the garbage collector believes is allocated to your app. The number not be exact right since some objects may not have been garbage collected yet. This, however does have the advantage of being able to inform you of the amount of memory a certain part of your app uses, as opposed to the entire process:

In the above example MyMethod takes two parameters – a Student object and an Integer. Note the difference between the passing a Value Type (such as an Integer) and a Reference Type (such as any class such as a ‘Student’ object in the above example). Any operations performed on a value type will no be reflected in the original variable whereas operations performed on a reference type are reflected in the original variable. For example, assuming calling the above MyMethod method note the below code (note the comment explanation at the end of the code block):

By default all paramteres are passed by value – i.e. only the value of the variable is passed to method and the object itself is not passed. Thus operations within the method can only operate on the value of the parameter it receives and cannot make changes to the original variable (do note that this only applies to Value Types as noted above since Reference Types will have their state changes when they are passed to methods).

Alternatively, parameters can be passed by Reference using the ref keyword and their values will be changed by the method:

In the above code the aNumber parameter in MyMethod now has the ref keyword, note that the ref keyword is always required when calling the method. The integer which is passed to the method now has its value changed by the method.

The out keyword has a similar impact to the ref keyword as the parameters that are passed to it can have their values changed. The primary difference is that when using the out keyword the objects do not need to be initialized. In the above example of passing by reference there would be a compile-time error if the integer had simply been declared by not initialized with a value as below:

C# ships with several inbuilt formatting specifies which can be used to quickly format a number, for example the ‘c’ specifier will format the number as a currency:

double dbl1 = 7777777.7777777;
outputStr = string.Format(“This is the currency format {0:c}”, dbl1);

This will output the numerical value as a currency based on the user’s current currency setting. In my case this will output:

This is the currency format $10,000,000.00

Note firstly that String.Format is a static method – ie you can not use it from an instance of a string object so the below code will generate a compile error:

You must always use it at the class level (ie String.Format)

Below are the inbuilt formatting specifiers:
c – Currency
d – Decimal
e – Exponential notation
f – Fixed point formatting
n – Numerical formatting (with commas)
x – Hexidecimal

The below code shows an implementation of the n formatting speficier:

Note that there will be compile errors if you attempt to format a double using the decimal format. Also, note that hexidecimal expects an integer type.

The first thing to note about strings in .NET is that they are Reference Types. Reference types are live on the managed heap in .NET and so they are managed by the .NET Garbage Collector and unlike Value types they are not automatically destroyed when they are out of scope.

Strings can be easily instantiated using the below syntax:

Note that there is no default value for a string, thus you need to assign a value to the string before attempting to access it:

string s1;

C# offers a convenient method for concatenating a string using ‘+’ :

string s1 = “New”;

Whilst this method is convenient it is not efficient for performing a large number of concatenations (since strings are immutable and are refenece types created on the managed heap each concatenation results in the creation of an extra string which is not automatically destroyed and stays in memory until the Garbage Collector destroys it).

To get around this limitation the .NET Framework provides the StringBuilder class which can efficiently concatenate strings using its Append() method:

sb.Append(“New”);

sb.Append(“Delhi”);

This is by way of demonstration since there would not be any memory saving from concatentating two strings (in fact this can consume more memory since the StringBuilder consumes memory). In general concatenating more than four strings is normally when a StringBuilder should be used.

In common with other C-based languages, C# strings may contain escape characters which qualify how the string should be output.
Escape characters begin with a backslash followed by a specific character.

Below are listed the various escape characters and their output:

\’ Inserts a single quote
\” Inserts a double quote
\\ Inserts a backslash
\a Triggers a system alert
\n Inserts a new line (on Windows systems)
\r Inserts a carriage return

Custom Error configuration:

Every piece of information an attacker receives about a targeted system or application is a valuable weapon. If the configuration is not set then in event of an unhandled exception the application returns details of that error to the end user which might reveal critical information about the underlying application/system.

Two most common misconfigurations:

Custom error message mode is turned off. An ASP.NET error message with detailed stack trace and platform versions will be returned.

Custom error message mode for remote user only. No defaultRedirect error page specified. The local user on the web server will see a detailed stack trace. For remote users, an ASP.NET error message with the server configuration setting and the platform version will be returned.

Secure configuration:

This will redirect the user to a custom error page when error occurs.

If ASP.NET debugging is enabled and customError is not set then in the event of an exception, applications will include not only the server information, a detailed exception message, and a stack trace, but also the actual source code of the page where the error occurred.
