As part of the long term maintenance and improvement programme, Estates & Commercial Facilities and Lindum Construction will be carrying out works within the Main Administrative Building and the Media, Humanities and Technology Building between 22 June 2009 and 11 September 2009.

Colleagues and students within these buildings may experience some noise and disruption, although all efforts will be made to limit this to the minimum.

The project within the MAB will broadly consist of refurbishing the third floor north east and north west floor plates (Finance and Human Resources Departments), replacing lighting to the ground floor Student Services floor plate, replacement of chiller systems within the plant room, modifications to the ventilation system throughout the building, installation of a maintenance walkway to the roof, repairs to the roof mounted smoke vents and upgrade of finishes in the public areas.

Works to the MHT will consist of replacing roof mounted plant and renewing finishes to the ground floor corridor with the aim of creating a Learning Corridor.

Concurrent with this will be the replacement of the lift car within the MHT building.

Regular updates on the building works will be posted on this blog, by e-mail and on posters within the buildings.

You can subscribe to receive automatic updates from this blog by clicking the Subscribe via eMail button above and on the right.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these works, and thank you for your understanding.

Work will begin on Enterprise@Lincoln, the University of Lincoln’s newest building, in the week commencing 10 November 2008.

Located between Sparkhouse Studios and the GCW University Library, the new building will be a physical hub for the University’s enterprise and employer engagement activity.

This state of the art, sustainable building will:

provide a gateway for the University’s employer engagement services

support the creation of higher skilled jobs

increase the number of new start businesses in Lincolnshire

provide space for expanding ventures moving on from Sparkhouse

provide the facilities to increase and improve knowledge transfer from the University

The project, which has been funded by the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) and Lincolnshire Enterprise, is expected to take 46 weeks to construct.

The Lindum Group will be the contractors undertaking the work on behalf of the University.

The building has been designed by Stem Architects to:

efficiently use campus space by infilling and addressing the river frontage

maximise environmental sustainability in many ways including the use of a “green roof” and recycled materials

achieve a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) “Excellent” rating

exceed Building Regulations requirements for energy efficiency

The project is being delivered under the management of the University’s Estates Department.

At certain times during the construction process, staff and students will encounter disruption such as noise and dust. Every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum and staff and students will be supported through the works.

A full health and safety plan has been put in place and ongoing consultation with all stakeholders and neighbours is being carried out.

Enterprise@Lincoln opens in Autumn 2009.

Regular updates will be posted on these pages throughout the works period.

Despite a number of unexpected developments on the building’s systems, efforts have been doubled to ensure no time is lost and the works continue to progress well.

All of the new light fittings are now fitted and early indications are that they will provide a vast improvement on the previous arrangement.

The glazing to the new screen between two of the larger seminar rooms has been installed, as are the lower transparent panels to the wall which overlooks the Atrium. These two features, within the central area are already giving a feeling of greater openness and connection to the rest of the building.

The seminar rooms’ new doors with integrated glazing panels are being hung to each of the side floor plates. The aim of this improvement is to greatly reduce the number of disruptions experienced during seminars and to allow borrowed light into the corridors.

Carpeting has now commenced on the eastern floor plate; this will progress across the whole area as each room becomes available.

With the decorators starting on the eastern end this weekend the finishing line for the project is beginning to come into view.

Here are the latest progress shots from the site:

For this week’s update, we caught up with project manager Matthew Brewster:

Works are progressing per the programme.

The frames for the new glazed screens have been formed, with the lower solid panels in MB 1019 being removed in readiness for the new glazing, which is being cut off-site at the moment.

The new more energy efficient light fittings are being fitted. The lighting controls are in place which will ensure that the lights will be more responsive.

The plasterwork to the new partition has been completed and is currently drying out.

Next week, work on the heating and cooling controls will commence which will vastly improve the internal comfort of the seminar rooms.

Unfortunately, next week we will need to close the second floor balcony walkway to allow for cabling connection. Access to each end floorplate on the second floor will remain as present, but to the centre will only be available from the internal corridor from each of the end floorplates.

As with all Resources projects, this work is designed to minimise disruption to University activity. We’d like to thank our neighbours and colleagues for your patience and cooperation, and look forward to sharing the new spaces with you in September.

Here are the latest photos from the site:

Week 4 of the Learning Landscapes work has seen a continuation of the electrical refit, with the new seminar rooms receiving new lighting and air conditioning controls.

The biggest development is the new dividing wall which has been placed in the Learning Landscapes area. The wall is fitted with thick insulation to minimise sound transfer between neighbouring spaces and will feature a large windowed area which will be fitted in the next couple of weeks.

A new, high level services bulkhead has been constructed to span the full length of the Learning Landscapes area. It forms the services spine to the central areas and will carry all of the electrical supplies and control wiring to the air conditioning, lighting, small power and data.
