Shrek Remains at No.1

DreamWorks Animation's Shrek Forever After topped the box office for a third straight weekend, earning an estimated $25.3 million to take its three-week total to $183 million. Overseas, the fourth and final installment has brought in $68.5 million, but it has yet to open in most of Europe and Latin America because of the World Cup which starts Friday, June 11. Shrek Forever After cost about $165 million to make.

Of the four newcomers, Universal's Get Him to the Greek performed best in second with an estimated $17.4 million from 2,697 theaters. Averaging $6,460 per theater, the Nick Stoller-directed comedy cost $40 million to produce. The Judd Apatow-produced film stars Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Rose Byrne, Sean Combs and Elisabeth Moss.

Lionsgate action comedy Killers, starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, opened in third place to $16.1 million from 2,859 theaters, an average of $5,631. Directed by Robert Luketic, the film was made for about $65 million.

Dropping a spot to fourth and 53.8% in ticket sales, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time added $13.9 million its second weekend for a total of $59.5 million. Overseas, the video game adaptation has earned $156.4 million for a worldwide total of $215.9 million.

New Line/Warner Bros.' Sex and the City 2 suffered a bigger 59.2% drop in sales its second weekend and slid to the fifth spot with $12.7 million. The $100 million-budgeted sequel has collected $74.4 million domestically so far. Internationally, the film took first place with $45 million and has earned $90 million to push its worldwide total to $164.4 million.

20th Century Fox's Marmaduke, an adaptation of the comic strip, debuted in sixth place with $11.3 million from 3,213 theaters. The film was made for about $50 million.

Paramount and Marvel Studios' Iron Man 2 dropped to the seventh spot and brought in another $7.8 million its fifth weekend for a domestic total of $291.3 million. Its overseas sum has reached $288.4 million for a worldwide total of $579.7 million.

Warner Bros. Pictures sci-fi thriller Splice opened in eighth place with $7.5 million from 2,450 theaters. The $30 million film stars Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley and Delphine Chaneac.

Universal's Robin Hood earned $5.1 million in ninth for a four-week total of $94.3 million, while its foreign gross has reached $172 million. That's a worldwide total of $266.3 million.

Christopher Nolan on Batman and Superman

Empire magazine talked to Christopher Nolan, whose new film Inception opens July 16, and got some great quotes from the helmer on the next Batman movie, coming July 20, 2012, and next Superman movie, targeted for a holiday 2012 release.

It was recently revealed that he would take on a mentor (or "godfather") role for the Superman movie, but he's not that comfortable with that title. "It's much more specific than that," he explained, "What it is, while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago - you know, thrashing out where we might move on from 'The Dark Knight' - we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said, ' By the way, I think I know how you approach Superman,' and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I had been able to conceive of how you would address Superman in a modern context. I thought it was a very exciting idea."

Nolan said he took that idea and pitched it to Warner Bros., and the studio got excited, too. "But it's not something for me to direct," he added. "It's something we were just trying to put together a vision for, and then find the right person to take it forward."

What's important to Nolan is finding the core of what makes the character so indelible; he favors the back-to-basics approach. "What you have to remember with both Batman and Superman," he told the magazine, "is that what makes those the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who those characters were when they were created and when they were first developed. And you can't ever move too far from that."

He still hasn't officially signed on to direct new Batman movie. "No I haven't. There is a point where you're just being precious about it and people get annoyed, but the God's honest truth is I work on one movie at a time. I'm only capable of doing that, so my head will continue to be firmly in ['Inception'] for another few months."

There are some things, though, that Nolan can confirm. "My brother is working on the screenplay. We came up with a story that we are very excited about. We particularly like where we are taking the characters and what the ending is... There are things for me to be very excited about in addressing the characters again. But ultimately it always comes down to the script, and can we make a great film from this? That's something I will firmly be turning my attention to figuring out fairly soon." It will be, he said, "the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story."

Empire asked whether the villain could be a returning (and recast) Joker. "No," said Nolan resisting to elaborate, "I just don't feel comfortable about it."

Nolan reiterated that you won't be seeing a Batman/Superman crossover in his movies. "Marvel are doing what they do and people will respond to that really well, or they won't," said Nolan. "It's not something I ever really applied a blanket rule to, but Marvel characters are very different to DC characters, and the key DC characters are very different to the minor DC characters. You've got to go back to that element of, 'What do I see when I close my eyes and think of Batman? What do I see when I close my eyes and think of Superman?' And for me a big part of that is their individuality. They are extraordinary beings in an ordinary world. And the reason I think the two are fascinating is because Superman is very specifically superpowered and obviously otherworldly; Batman is very human and flawed. They're two very different characters, but there's an elemental feeling of power in the iconography of those characters. To me that's originally because they stood alone. I need to hang on to that in my imagining of them."

Jeremy Renner to Play Hawkeye in The Avengers?

Jeremy Renner may be close to locking a deal to star as Clint Barton, AKA Hawkeye, in Joss Whedon's The Avengers, reports Heat Vision.

Since last year, rumors have persisted that Marvel has been after the star of The Hurt Locker to play the character, though official sources would not confirm that Hawkeye even has a role in the upcoming summer blockbuster, much less actor selection.

Renner talked exclusively with SuperHeroHype late last year, indicating that, while he'd love to join the Marvel Universe in some capacity, the film was too far off and, at the time, didn't even have a director. It appears that, with Joss Whedon now on board and pre-production moving forward, Renner may become an official member of the team yet.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today the studio will release Sherlock Holmes 2 on December 16, 2011. That happens to be the same day as Paramount's Mission: Impossible IV and Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D are scheduled to hit theaters.

Sherlock Holmes 2 will again be directed by Guy Ritchie and star Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson.

The first film, made for about $90 million, earned an impressive $516.8 million at the worldwide box office. Domestically, the movie took in $209 million and the international sum was $307.7 million.

Director Michael Bay's official website has confirmed that Victoria's Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has landed the lead female role in Transformers 3. Huntington-Whiteley has worked with Bay before on his Victoria's Secret "A Thousand Fantasies" ad.

She joins Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Kevin Dunn, Julie White, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Ken Jeong, Patrick Dempsey and Alan Tudyk in the third film scheduled for release on July 1, 2011.

The DreamWorks/Paramount Pictures production has been shooting on a sound stage at the former Spruce Goose Howard Hughes hangar at Playa Vista and will film exterior shots throughout the L.A. area over the next several weeks, including Long Beach, West Hollywood, Century City and Malibu.

"Mike, [producer] Lorenzo [di Bonaventura] and I are all big fans of trying to keep as much of our production in L.A. as possible," said Bay's producing partner, Ian Bryce. "It's a big movie. All our stage work is being done here."

In all, six weeks of the 4 1/2 months of shooting will occur in the L.A. area, with the rest of the filming spread across Chicago, Detroit, Washington and Cape Canaveral, Fla., and a few foreign locales, including Russia and an undisclosed African country, Bryce said.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released this new internet trailer for Vincenzo Natali's Splice, hitting theaters this Friday, June 4th.

Legendary Pictures Making Mass Effect Movie

Way back in September of 2008, Avi Arad, ex-CEO of Marvel studios, optioned the movie rights to the 2007 hit game Mass Effect. Being one of my all-time favorite games, I was both happy and concerned.

Mass Effect told a wonderful story, in a brand new and original sci-fi universe with lovable and well thought-out characters. The way the game was presented, notably during conversations and cutscenes, was very cinematic with a clear emphasis on showcasing the beautifully rendered graphics and character animations as if it were a film.

This would definitely make for one amazing film franchise, except for the fact that all video game movies suck. Legendary Pictures looks to change that by optioning the rights to EA and BioWare’s Mass Effect, with Warner Bros. set to distribute the film. They’re already looking at a writer to pen the script.
As I always say, video games based on movies suck and movies based on video games suck. Why? Money doesn’t seem to be an issue so in the case of movies based on video games, it must come down to those in creative control. In nearly every instance of someone adapting a video game into a feature film, they (for whatever unknown reason) continue to miss the absolute key ingredients in what made the game successful. Sometimes they abandon or completely change key parts of the story or characters, sometimes they change action sequences for the worse and sometimes they don’t seem to understand what people liked about the games in the first place.

I have high hopes for what could be the Mass Effect movie but only if the source material is respected. There’s been plenty of interest in putting the Mass Effect movie into production, especially since the success and critical acclaim surrounding the release of Mass Effect 2 earlier this year, and the folks at Legendary understand the potential of the property.
