Second Boeing 787 Dreamliner Completes Test Flight

The 787 Dreamliner is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines

The second Boeing 787 Dreamliner, ZA002, completed its first flight yesterday, just seven days after the very first 787 Dreamliner made its debut test flight.

The all-new plane, which features the livery of the Dreamliner's launch customer, ANA (All Nippon Airways) of Japan, took off from Paine Field in Everett, completed a two-hour flight, and landed at Boeing Field in Seattle.

“We are delighted that the second Dreamliner is in the livery of our launch customer, ANA,” said Scott Fancher, Vice President and General Manager of the 787 program. “We are honoured by the airline’s support and look forward to delivering ANA the first production airplane next year.”

Captain Randy Neville was at the controls for the flight, with Chief Pilot Mike Carriker operating as Co-pilot. Neville and Carriker took the plane to an altitude of 13,000 feet (3,962 m) and an airspeed of 200 knots, or about 230 miles (370 km) per hour.

The aircraft took off at 9:09 a.m. PST and landed at 11:10 a.m. PST.

This is the second of six 787s being used in the Dreamliner’s flight-test program. Each of these aeroplanes will be used for a specific set of tests, with this particular aeroplane focusing on systems performance.

“We would like to convey our sincere congratulations to the Boeing team for its achievement of this milestone, and we look forward to the delivery into our fleet next year,” said Shinichiro Ito, President and CEO of ANA.

In related news, Boeing has reported the acquisition of Alenia North America's half of Global Aeronautica, LLC, a South Carolina fuselage subassembly facility for Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, and is now the sole owner of that entity.

It is thought that Boeing will integrate the Global Aeronautica facility with the rest of Boeing's organization in North Charleston, S.C.

"The Boeing Charleston site is critical to the success of the 787 program," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Through this acquisition, Boeing benefits by joining together two solid operations - including their talented employees and state-of-the-art facilities - into one Boeing team. Ultimately, we believe integration of the site will increase productivity for the 787 program and allow us to maintain our long-term competitiveness."

Global Aeronautica's integration entails the joining of the mid-fuselage sections, the installation and testing of associated elements, and the application of surface finishes to more than 60 percent of the 787's fuselage. Global Aeronautica sits adjacent to the Boeing Charleston site and shares a 240-acre (97-hectare) campus.

70 Volunteers For LIMA 2009

LANGKAWI, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- Seventy volunteers will be on duty during the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (Lima 2009) exhibition on the legendary island from Dec 1 to 5, Langkawi Tourism Action Council facilities and services manager Suziana Wan Othman said on Saturday.

She said the volunteers would serve with the Lima 2009 organiser at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) in Padang Matsirat.

HW Lima Sdn Bhd is the sole organiser of this year's edition of Lima. Previously, the biennial event was hosted by two organisers, separately for the maritime and aerospace segments.

Suziana said the volunteers had to attend a special course held by the tourism council.

Up to 325 exhibitors from 25 countries are expected to take part in this year's Lima.

Suziana said that in conjunction with Lima 2009, various exhibitions, sales and performances would be held at the Awana Porto Malai Resort and Pekan Rabu in Kuah.

She said more than 50 types of traditional food of the various states would be on show, among them "rendang Tok" (Perak), "satay tulang" (Negeri Sembilan), "otak-otak" (Johor), "bubur lambuk" (Kuala Lumpur), "nasi dagang" (Terengganu), "nasi kerabu" (Kelantan), "laksa Perlis" (Perlis) and "asam pedas" (Melaka).

Lima, which was started in 1991, is a major destination for manufacturers of aerospace and maritime products who target the Asia Pacific market.

Malaysia Airlines Awarded 5-Star Airline And World's Best Cabin Staff

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- It was a double celebration for Malaysia Airlines recently when it was awarded the 5-Star Airline for the fifth consecutive year and the World's Best Cabin Staff for the seventh time by Skytrax, a UK-based organisation with 20 years experience in airline research.

Malaysia Airlines has been accredited as a 5-Star airline by Skytrax since 2005 while its cabin crew has won the World's Best Cabin Staff award for 2001-2004, 2007, 2009-2010.

"This is great news, particularly in today's tough environment where all employees have been working very hard to deliver products and services that matter to the customer. What matters to them, matters to us," Malaysia Airlines' Managing Director and CEO Tengku Datuk Azmil Zahruddin.

Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said in awarding the 5-Star airline ranking to Malaysia Airlines, they recognised the consistent front-line performance of the airline during recent tough times for the industry.

"The 5-Star Airline status is awarded only to airlines achieving the very highest quality performance, and this top tier award for Malaysia Airlines pays respect to their ability to deliver the right combination of product and service," he said.

Malaysia Airlines was also recently voted as "Asia's Leading Airline" by over 180,000 industry professionals in a global poll conducted by the World Travel Awards.

Other recognitions that Malaysia Airlines received this year include Airline of the Year by Malaysia Airport Holding Bhd, finishing 3rd in Top Performing Company by Aviation Week and 8th in Top Airlines Worldwide Category by Smart Travel Asia.

AirAsia X Eyes Flights to Paris

AirAsia has said it is delighted about the announcement by Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak regarding the granting of landing rights in Paris by the French government.

Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib, who was on a four-day official visit to France, told reporters in Paris that French President Nicolas Sarkozy had conveyed approval of the landing rights in their meeting at the Elysee Palace.

“The French government’s approval places AirAsia in a significant position, in line with the plans by AirAsia X to expand our operations in Europe,” said AirAsia X CEO Azran. Currently, AirAsia X flies seven times a week to London-Stansted, the airline’s sole destination in Europe.

“AirAsia X had initially considered launching a route from Kuala Lumpur to Nice, France, next year but with this latest news, the airline will re-calibrate its strategy as we now have an opportunity to fly to Paris. We will work closely with the relevant authorities to make this flight a reality.”

“The date for the launch of our flights to Paris will be decided upon completion of further discussions with the relevant officials. We will provide more updates as further developments arise,” added Azran.

AirAsia X operates out of Kuala Lumpur. The airline extends AirAsia's short-haul success to the long-haul segment.

In addition to London, AirAsia X operates flights to cities in Australia and China as well as to Taipei, Taiwan. In November, the airline will operate its first route to the Middle East, with the inaugural flight to Abu Dhabi.

China Southern Airlines and Malaysia Airlines sign Codeshare Agreement

China Southern Airlines and Malaysia Airlines have signed a codeshare agreement which will give customers more choices and seamless travel to destinations served by the two airlines.

Starting today, customers of the two airlines will be able to benefit from 35 weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing.

This partnership complements the earlier signed agreement allowing Malaysia Airlines' customers to travel on China Southern flights to 90 destinations in China from Guangzhou and 38 from Beijing.

At the same time, China Southern Airlines' customers flying into Kuala Lumpur can connect to all domestic points served by Malaysia Airlines and MASwings, further strengthening Kuala Lumpur as the gateway for Chinese travelers into Malaysia. The two airlines will also be able to tap feeder traffic from the domestic routes of the respective countries.

Malaysia Airlines Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer, Dato' Sri Idris Jala said, "We are pleased to be a part of this strategic partnership which is in line with our customer value proposition to delight our customers. This agreement enables us to offer customers with more travel options, further strengthening our presence in Malaysia and China.

"This will further boost our hub-and-spoke network, and enable us to leverage on the strong growth of Chinese outbound travelers. We expect to see a 7% growth in passenger volume for our China-Malaysia bound flights."

Moving forward, Malaysia Airlines and China Southern customers' can expect to connect to more destinations through the two airlines. In addition, the carriers are looking into enhancing the codeshare agreement to enable their frequent flier members to earn and redeem miles when they travel on each other's services.
