Before he was in high school, Chase Lewis was saving other children.

Lewis, the prodigious winner of the Smithsonian Invent It challenge prototyped a device that would help victims of the Somali famine transport their children to safe grounds. “It can be assembled easily with just visual instructions,” he told LEGO Education in a recent interview. “Guess where I got the idea for using simple visual instructions? Yes, you are right – those wonderful LEGO instructions with which we all are familiar.”

LEGO Education lauded the 13-year-old inventor, and asked him to attend the 2013 FIRST World Championship as their “man on the street.”

At this year’s championship, Lewis spent some time with National Instruments engineer and Waterloo Labs’ founder Hunter Smith. The two discussed how NI is helping to create the next generation of engineers, and how LEGO Education and NI’s partnership is helping to make it a reality.
