Through the woods

Walking to the supermarket, via brief detours to scale ~~mountains~~ quite steep hills and get all manner of splinters embedded in our hands. Converse are definitely not the shoes for impromptu hiking, I’ll tell you that. On the plus side, we did just watch all of the Lord Of The Rings extended edition (11 hours and 23 minutes!!!) back to back, so at least there were many jokes about how journeying to Mordor was a piece of cake compared to this etc etc.

Crimson / White

A while ago I saw The Crimson Petal and the White and made some screen caps as I went along, as I often do when watching something visually appealing. Fellow illustrators, do you do the same? I like to use them as references for sketches sometimes, you get some really nice lighting as well as great facial expressions and costumes. Anyway, I was cleaning up my hard drive, came upon these and in a moment of extreme procrastination edited them ye-olde-Victorian-stylee with a bit of help from Exposure.

The mini series was on last year and if you missed it, you’re missing out (but there is a DVD). The cinematography is gorgeous and atmospheric (the original was obviously in colour) and the casting is banging. If nothing else, you get a four hour jaunt through flawless Romola’s many hairdos, which is a treat in itself.

But let’s not start talking about how much I love Romola, or we’ll be here all day…

Fashion Week Faves: Ashish

Thank god for Ashish on the last day of LFW, a hit of sequins is exactly what your sleep deprived eyes need just then. Ashish is always a blast, what else is there to say? I want one of those multi coloured leopard sequined biker jackets pretty bad, that’s what. And a great big BE HAPPY jumper too. Fingers crossed for the Topshop range?

Fashion week faves: Meadham Kirchhoff

I spent most of London Fashion Week either going on about how much I was looking forward to Meadham Kirchhoff or beaming about how much I loved it. After seeing photos of last year’s all-dancing pastel extravaganza I was totally thrilled to be invited by Luisa Via Roma to come and illustrate my favourite looks from the show. The photo pit had the security of the average Presidential state visit, but I ended up getting a pretty great spot halfway down the runway. Happily, the girls stopped right there to fling glitter from their pockets and have a bit of disco dance, so it was perfect. Everyone’s faces were basically the human embodiment of the ^__________^ emoticon for the whole show (trust me, for day 5 when everyone is exhausted, that is basically unbridled joy right there). Anyway, there’s no point me gushing on, you can see way more of my photos here!

I don’t really do Valentine’s Day (other than having some quite festive raspberry cheesecake today actually), but I had this little lady waiting to be scanned since last month and today seemed like the perfect day. Watercolour and gouache on A3 paper, nice and simple.

Queen of the polka dots

On tuesday I went to the press viewing of the brilliant new Yayoi Kusama exhibition at Tate Modern. Showing over six decades of Kusama’s works across 14 rooms, there is a sampling of everything from painting, sculpture and collage to film and installation.

The standout rooms are definitely the “environments” I’m Here, but Nothing (a small furnished room covered in hundreds of glowing stickers under a black light) and the aptly named Infinity Mirrored Room – Filled with the Brilliance of life. At the risk of sounding incredibly overdramatic – it was beautiful, magical and made me feel like I wanted to have a small joyful cry. The photos and the short shaky video below don’t come close to showing how epic it is and I can’t seem to describe how it felt without making it sound like something from The Perks of Being a Wallflower. So if you can, go and experience it for yourself. The whole exhibition gives an excellent overview of Kusama’s prolific body of work and is definitely worth a visit (though if you have cluster phobia then you might want to take room 10 at some speed and with eyes averted!)

The exhibition opens today and runs until the 5th of June.

Totes Unique

Back in September I shot the Topshop Unique SS12 show for a magazine feature. Sadly the feature got killed, but now the pictures are un-embargoed I can at least show them to you! I shot the run-through and backstage preparations before the show, which is always my favourite bit to photograph and was a ton of fun. You can see the entire great big gallery in massive pictures over here. I’ll be running another live gallery for London Fashion Week this season, so look out for that in a few weeks time!
