Surprisingly a major portion of Knowliz visitors voted for Ubuntu 9.10 (52%) whereas only 15% voted in favour of Windows 7.  Also if you consider the people voting for dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows 7 (33%) and split that amount equally then the actual percentage of people using Windows 7 vs Ubuntu 9.10 will look like this: (Windows 7 – 32% & Ubuntu 9.10 – 68%)

So as you know the majority of visitors on Knowliz use Windows as captured by Google Analytics and only a fraction use Linux OS.  Therefore you can safely assume that this poll is not biased at all.  Here is a screenshot for Knowliz visitor stats from Google Analytics:

Only thing it tells that the mindset of people is changing and they are migrating to cost effective alternatives of proprietary software and OS.  Earlier version of Windows – Windows Vista notoriety is also culprit of this decline in the loyalty for Microsoft products.  Obviously the open source community software are getting better and better with every release.

You may want to find out 25 reasons to try Ubuntu instead of Windows as well if you are still thinking why you should also migrate to Ubuntu.

If you use Wordpress, you know there are many plug-ins which allows official or unofficial version of Facebook Share count button.  Though the people using Blogger are out of luck because Blogger doesn’t support plug-ins.  Don’t worry, I have created an easy hack for you to include the OFFICIAL Facebook Share count button in your Blogger blogs.

Here is how to add Official Facebook Share Count Button to Blogger:

1. Go to your Blogger Dashboard.
2. Then go to Layout -> Edit HTML.
3. Check “Expand Widget Template”.
4. Search for the following section of code:
   

   <div class=’post-body’>  OR  <data:post.body/>

5. Now add the following code (just copy/paste) right after this line:
   

   <b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType != &quot;item&quot;’>
   <div style=’float:left; margin-right:10px;’><a expr:share_url=’data:post.url’ name=’fb_share’ type=’box_count’>Share</a><script src=’http://static.ak.fbcdn.net/connect.php/js/FB.Share’ type=’text/javascript’/></div></b:if>

6. Do a ‘Preview Template” if you want.  And if no error is shown, Save your template.
7. That’s it.  Visit your blog.  You should see a Facebook Share button on the left side of your post.
8. When readers click on this button, it will be able to fetch your blog post title and a little description.
9. The counter will keep increasing as more and more people share your articles.
10. Enjoy…!!!

Now if you want, you can change the location of this button wherever you want with a little CSS modification and the location where the above code is added.  Do a trial and error to find the best location for this button yourself.

Most probably, most of the users of Money and Office Accounting will migrate to Quicken.  Please note, Quicken has recently acquired Mint which will be replacing their Quicken Online Money management web application.  Other than that there is no major contender in this space.

Below is a list of 15 such Adobe Air applications for Social Media enthusiasts.  Just install Adobe Air on your computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) and then start installing the apps you want.  Here is the list:

1. DestroyTwitter: DestroyTwitter is a robust but compact Twitter application.  It consists of a series of canvases that constantly update to keep tweets current and up-to-date using notifications that appear immediately after a new tweet arrives.  DestroyTwitter support only one Twitter account at a time.
2. TweetDeck: Best Twitter & Facebook desktop client which helps you stay in touch with your twitter and Facebook followers.  You can see what’s happening right now and update your status on multiple twitter accounts.  TweetDeck shows you everything you want to see at once, so you can stay organised and up to date.
3. Seesmic Desktop: Seesmic makes it easy to reply to them and share text, links, photos and videos all in one screen.  Seesmic is another most popular Twitter client.
   Both TweetDeck and Seesmic are adding features with blazing speed.  It become really very tough to decide which one to choose.  It turns out to be a personal preference and not the features to pick any one of them.
4. DestroyFlickr: The coolest way to browse through Flickr photos.  You will never visit Flickr again after using DestroyFlickr.  If you are Flickr user, I will suggest you install it right away.
5. Facedesk: Facedesk is a standalone Facebook app which is just Facebook outside the browser that you can run separately on your desktop.  Something like Prism or Google Chrome application shortcuts.
6. Posty: Posty simplifies microblogging. All you have to do is writing the message and clicking a button. Posty will automatically deliver your message to the services you selected. Currently supported networks are: Twitter, Jaiku, Tumblr, Friendfeed and Identi.ca.
7. AlertThingy: AlertThingy brings the latest updates from your favorite social networks direct to your desktop. Send Tweets, update your Facebook status, upload photos to Flickr, post to Tumblr etc.  You also get the coolest looking RSS reader which makes it easy to share news items with your friends.
8. Plurker: If you love plurk and want to update your status on Plurk with this app.
9. MePing: MePing is simply a desktop replacement for Ping.fm on web.  You can update all your connected services (status, microblogs and blog) at the ease of your desktop with this app.  Just give it your Ping application key and you are all set to start.  Really a must have for people with multiple social profiles.
10. Feedalizer: Feedalizer makes it easy to share images, links etc, view and update status on Twitter, Facebook, Friendfeed and Flickr etc.  Very sleek design and very helpful if you don’t have too many social profiles to maintain.
11. Desktube: You can guess is a Youtube client for Desktop.  That’s why “Desktop + Youtube = Desktube”.  Allows Twitter and Facebook integration as well.
12. Tweetphoto uploader: If you use Tweetphoto to share photos on Twitter, then you may want to use Tweetphoto uploader.
13. Filesocial Uploader: If you share files (images, video, pdf, docs etc.) on twitter very frequently, then Filesocial uploader will come in very handy.  It makes sharing files on twitter damn easy.
14. Tumbleweed: You don’t need to run into a browser, if you are working on Tumblr alone.  Think of it as a replica of Tumblr web interface which you can run in a standalone window.
15. Twhirl: Twhirl is a social desktop client for services like Twitter, Seesmic, Friendfeed and identi.ca. It allows to connect to multiple account at the same time, keep up with your friends’ updates, and share what you are doing.  Twhirl is provided by Seesmic.

Depending on which social network you are member and what is your personal taste, you may choose different applications from this list.  But what ever you choose, they are sure to enhance your experience.  The fact about all Adobe Air apps is that they are very intuitive and good looking.

• Fixed duplicate trackbacks bug.  If you used this plugin earlier and have duplicate trackbacks/comments, you can delete them all at once.  Hopefully you will not get the duplicate trackbacks after Topsy syncs them again.
• Removed “Original tweet/Topsy page” links.
• Changed default settings so user must explicitly activate trackback comments.

With Release 1.0 Topsy becomes one of the must have plugin for all Wordpress users and in some way reduces the need to have a separate Tweetmeme plugin to allow retweeting of the blog post.

I am sure many of you use Facebook to share photos with your friends.  But do you know you don’t have to use Facebook interface always to upload photos to Facebook.  You may use various applications to do that.

For example, Facebook has very interactive applications for various mobile platforms – iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile etc.

However, nothing would be easier than sending an email, right….because emails are accessible everywhere.  They are not blocked in offices where most of the social networks are possibly blocked.  So how to do that?  Below are the easy steps to get started:

1. Login to your Facebook profile.
2. Click on this link – http://www.facebook.com/mobile.
3. As soon as you reach there while logged in, you will see your personalized email address, as shown.
4. That’s it.  Note down this email address in your phone address book.  And don’t share it with anyone.
   (Else they will be able to upload photos/videos to your profile without your knowledge.)
5. Now compose an email in your preferred program – Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail and send it to this address with your photos and videos attached in it.  Subject line will become the caption of these photos.
6. Your media files will be available on your profile soon.
7. Remember the photos and video you upload through this email address are public by default.  So make sure to go to Facebook settings if you want to change it.

Now you don’t have to wait to share your best shot with your friends.  If you have access to an email, you have access to Facebook, no matter where you are.

BTW, if you happen to be a Picasa fan too, then learn how you can upload photos to Facebook using Picasa Desktop.

First of all, Happy Halloween to all Knowliz readers and visitors.

As you might have noticed, Knowliz went through some changes in October. I migrated Knowliz from Blogger to self-hosted Wordpress platform, changed the theme and layout of the posts along with some other changes.

Theme selection was not an easy task and that’s why you might have noticed that the theme was changed several times during the migration.  Finally I got a decent looking, feature rich theme - Mainstream from WooThemes.  This is the theme you are reading Knowliz at the moment.  I must say, I am really happy with it so far.  But I would appreciate your feedback on the same.
