Back in Nov. 2009 I wrote a quick piece on Danica Patrick, who at the time was considering her options to join NASCAR. Now, as we approach Memorial Day Weekend and the 100th Anniversary of the original “Great American Race” Danny will be starting from the back. Not all the way back but far enough back (25 of 33 ) to reflect on the steep climb facing her career if she has any hope of holding the checkered flag at Indy. In fact, she’s not the only girl on the grid. There are 3 others racing this year including Swiss racer Simona de Silvestro who has qualified 2 slots ahead of her. And not just this weekend’s climb either. She has reached the point in her career where she must decide to leave her dreams and passion of an Indy win and go for the career Gold in 2012 with a NASCAR contract. According to Jay Hart @ Yahoo Sports, both contracts will expire soon and her management team IMG has undoubtedly made note of her ‘ticking clock.’

So does she go for the Flag or put her dreams on hold and grab the Funds? If you haven’t gone back to read my first article, this may be a good time. There I said it was all about the money. Perhaps it shouldn’t be but one would be foolish to think otherwise. Most probably her inner circle of advisors will be working hard this weekend to come up with little one line zingers to remind her of this. She nearly missed qualifying for this year’s centennial celebration, and no matter what the outcome over at NASCAR, one things for sure.. The Danny Brand will Command ~ super high bucks. With that said, and for the love of the sport I sure hope she proves me wrong.

and let ‘em Parade. I can remember when I was kid certain holidays were always marked by a large procession of floats, marching bands, clowns, and lots of balloons. In our small Western New York town there was two every year:

Military Might

The Veterns Day Parade which was the smaller gathering but always had a good size group of smartly dressed and pressed soldiers. There was always one guy in the front corner calling out the cadence and you could hear their boots stomp as they made their way down the street. The much larger Fourth of July ~ Fireman’s Parade brought out the whole neighborhood. The weather was usually bright and sunny. Big Red Fire Trucks from all over the state would come. There were school marching bands and floats. Later in the year at Thanksgiving time, mom would put on the television and we’d gather around to watch The Macy’s Day Parade. This was a personal favorite of mine for its huge cartoon character floats. There was The Disney Parade on Christmas Day and then on New Years after we stayed up late to watch the glass ball drop in New York City we’d all gather around the RCA or “Boob Tube” as my father called it, to see The Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. That was by far the most colorful and had the best marching bands.

According to Wikipedia; Parades have been used over the years for many reasons; Military Parades were held to show force and capability. Ticker Tape Parades were used to celebrate national heroes and teams. Parades have also been used to bring recognition to certain organizations and groups. If your still looking for a New Years Resolution perhaps you would consider making a commitment to attend a parade this year. Take a youngster with you and I guarantee you’ll both find reason to smile. And if for some reason you just can’t find a youngster willing to go try calling the local “Boys and Girls Club” www.bgca.org

December; and the year 2010 are quickly coming to a close. An absolutely fantastic year for events held around the globe. We saw some of the biggest attendance events [World Cup Soccer, the NFL’s Super Bowl, and the Winter Olympics up in Vancouver] all successfully held without terrorist attack or similar disaster. And despite tremendous economic hardships we saw some events (The Red Bull Air Race in New York and the Albuquerque Balloon Festival) report near records in attendance. There were literally hundreds of new and smaller events [Harbin Ice Festival, World Ice Golf Championships, and The International Pillow Fight Day] all gaining in recognition and popularity. Perhaps Know2Go has played some small [yet growing] important part in the success of every event we cover. We look forward to the New Year with excited anticipation as “We Bring World Events” to YOU.
Decade; the first ten years of the century has few days remaining before its completion. In reality we’re about 3,635 days (plus or minus a few leap years) into the 21st Century. There’s been plenty for historians to study and plenty of comparisons yet made (expect a summary in various publications and newsprint sometime after the holidays. Like it or not, we’re making great progress toward a One World civilization and many would argue the internet is playing a tremendous role in bringing us all closer together as a civilization. With today’s smart phone technology and over 5 billion of the world’s population now carrying a “Personal Communicator” the gap will continue to close, crossing even the tightest of barriers and borders {Cuba + North Korea}. And speaking of history, one of the biggest (and perhaps least known) features of the Know2Go website is the option to include historical events. To access this feature, simply log in and then click the box found to the right of your “Speed Search” box. This can be most helpful when looking at bi-annual and quadrennial events such as next year’s World Cup Rugby challenge held in New Zealand or the Summer Olympics taking place in Great Britain.

Dimension; a simple measurement of an object’s length, width, and thickness. Stay tuned for great things from your friends at Know2Go as our dimensions expand. 2011 will include a roll out of mobile phone apps, great news if you have a [Android and Blackberry] smart phone. We have our events team working on the final stages of the largest and most comprehensive listing of events, which will be offered in 5 different languages. With help from our active membership group we will introduce video {3D?} coverage of various events and a few more exciting goodies. We look forward to having both your participation and your feedback ~ with a promise to read all that’s submitted.

Looking over this month’s calendar I came to realize a real limitation to the standard model. As you flip the page

Only month 2 month?

there’s usually a picture which helps us relate to the season or happenings of a particular month. This is all well and good. In fact some new digital models allow you to download your own photos. see: www.gizmodo.com But the limitation I am referring to is with regard to the depiction of calendar days. The standard choices are are 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. But that’s it! You don’t get to see the second half of June and the first half of July. This can be a real limitation in terms of planning for upcoming events. Especially if you know how to backwards plan. For instance, I just opened the calendar in my smart phone (Motorola Droid) as with most mobiles in use today this one allows you to instantly flip between June and July but it doesn’t show me half one and half of the other. Darn the technology! The people who program this stuff must be as old as the wall calendar itself. If I swipe my finger across the screen I move from page to page and I can use the same swiper to scroll down through my phone book. But why can’t I swipe or scroll through the days of a calendar allowing a look of 15 June to 15 July? Hmm.

Who wins the 4 year title?

Now, let me better explain what we’re missing with this limitation. Have you noticed the fourth of July weekend is fast approaching? It’s just 2 weeks away! Most of us are probably too busy preparing for this weekend’s US Open and Father’s Day celebration to even notice. With a look at the Know2Go calendar you’ll actually see more than 21 big happenings over the next 21 days. Some really good ones you might want to plan for. There’s the American Quarter Horse Summer Convention going on down in Texas. A Good Guys National show up in Iowa, The World UFO gig down in New Mexico (betcha’ didn’t know that was quickly approaching). In the category of on going events there is World Cup Soccer and The China World Expo. If you need speed there’s The RedBull Air Races in The Big Apple and 2 car events, Nascar at Daytona and Formula 1 over in Europe. Let’s see have I mentioned twenty one events yet? There’s a Jazz & Wine festival in the Rockies and another over in money town (Aspen). If you wait like most do and flip the calendar at month’s end (or like I do usually around the second or third of the new month) you are going to be really jammin’ to prepare for the Independence Day weekend. Calendar’s are made for planning. But I say the design is flawed. Note to self: call the programmers of Know2Go, let’s redesign the calendar!

It appears as if Australian “Olympic Gold Medal” snowboarder Torah Bright is flipping over Shaun White. She is planning on getting hitched this summer in Salt Lake City but not to Shaun’O. Too bad though, wouldn’t it be funny to see them name their son “Bright White” ? Just think of this kids school house conversations: Hey ‘Bright’ whats your dad do? Uh, he’s an Olympic Gold Medal winner with his very own half pipe and line of clothing: The White Collection. Whoa Dude, and what about that hot looking mom of yours? Oh, she’s packin’ her own hardware. She stole it from the American Ladies back in 2010. Vancouver I think it was..

Too bad Religon is gonna stand in the way of wedding bells for this ‘Dream Team.’ Ms. Bright is LDS and Shaun’O is Southern Californian.. not much in common off the pipe they both know how to smoke.. half pipe that is..

Sorry, this crazy idea had to be put down.. just call it skiers revenge.

Well if its a Super Bowl Party, plan lots of extra and the left overs will usually keep. The Pro-Player stadium sat 75,129 last time the Pig Skin Party was held in Miami ~ while the Orange Bowl Stadium officially recorded 80,187 for Super Bowl X and last year’s number was 70,774 in Tampa.

Let’s Compare. According to Wiki: The “Un-Official number is 175,000 who showed up last year in Daytona to see Roush Racing’s ~ Matt Kenseth win the Big One while www.travelinbc.com is estimating 2.3 million attendees for the Winter Olympics plus another 29,000 in Media, Support Staff and Athletes. The Tokyo Marathon averages 30,000 runners and The Harbin Ice Festival comes in over 5 million ~ of course, it’s China!

Another week or so and the shortest calendar month of the year arrives! Horoscope signs: Aquarius followed by Pisces. I’ve got two daughters born under the sign of water. Funny thing, I can’t ever remember them once telling me they were bored. Looking on the Know2Go calendar I fully see why. Just for funzy’s I clicked on the “Date” bar found on the home page then selected February 1st from the calendar ~ over 460 events listed. WOW! On further search, here’s some of what’s going on: The Harbin International Ice Festival in China (fabulous), Nascar’s Daytona 500 “Superbowl” of Racing (start your engines), And speaking of Super Bowl ~ Location search “Miami” for that one. The Pro Am Bowling Tourney @ The Taj Mahal of Bowling Pins in Reno, There’s a Runners Marathon happening over in Tokyo (hey watch those elbows). On the business side of the calendar there’s ~ The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (hello, ma’ bell?) and The Grand Daddy of all Business Trip’s ~ The Winter Olympics is happening up in Vancouver (Ice Cream anybody?). And if none of this stuff interests you, there is one big holiday in February: Valentine’s Day on Sunday the 14th. Recommend you call for dinner reservations now and if ever get the chance you should see the hardware that flies in Aspen on that weekend… Cheers!

In a recent blog article on ESPN ( sports.espn.go.com/rpm/nascar/news/story?id=4548687 ) Michael Waltrip talks about Danika Patrick joining NASCAR and says her interests are not about the money. Come On Michael! Your kidding yourself. Your a Champion at Nascar and you deserve tremendous respect, but I think you’ve been hit, not by a tire iron but by the driver who welds a curling iron. Admit it Michael, she’s stunningly beautiful and you were mesmerized. Good thing they gotta put on a racing suits and helmets or there would be real trouble on the track.

You better hope you can't see her in the rear view mirror..

Michael, people don’t go to college for the money they make in school, its all about the money to be made with diploma in hand. Granted, she sat with you and never talked about money – that’s because she already knows there’s no money to be had in Nationwide Racing. She needs experience and your organization. Well if it’s all about the racing and not the money let’s just see how long she hangs around in the series. For that matter, why not send her down to the local Kart track.. that’s all about racing!

It’s not about the money… yeah, any more than movie theaters – are not about good buttered popcorn.

Allow me say what I have said previously, Danika is good for NASCAR, she’s great for racing, and with some oval track experience and a good organization behind her, I think she can win (frequently). But to say that she’s not in it for the money… is just plain goofy.

If you consider the benefits.. in logistics and global exposure this makes PERFECT sense. If you imagine the day when we watch young Ms Woods and Ms Mickelson dueling it out on the LPGA, while their respective brothers Charlie Axel and Evan chase each other over 72 holes on the PGA… during the same venue on the same weekend – this makes GOLF sense. If your a event sponsor this makes DOLLARS and CENTS. And if you could imagine the dinner / dance evenings at the Club House – it makes perfect CLUB Membership sense too? On that note: Just too bad Annika has retired..

Here’s one golf fan who will vote for this. I can’t see the short comings.. save for an in-climate weather nightmare. Any chance we could see a couple test events in 2010? Boys, I think the ladies could use some good ol’ chivalry about now..
