A warm, windy October morning on the Indiana Shore of Lake Michigan was the perfect day for kitesurfing. At least ten kitesurfers gathered on Michigan City’s Washington Beach to take advantage of the wind and waves.

In kitesurfing, the primary pull that the surfer gets comes from a kite which is being pulled by the wind. While it may be extremely enjoyable, kitesurfing is a sport that is a summation of all the difficult adventure sports. Hence, as is logical, it is one of the most difficult adventure sports to master. However, if you pay attention to certain basics and follow a lot of recommendations and tips from seasoned kitesurfers, there is no reason why you cannot crack the art of kitesurfing. The following are some tips that will stand you in good stead when you are riding the wave with a kite.

1.  One of the most important things to note when you are on the wave and get rolled is that you should let the bar out instead of trying to manage the kite while you are disoriented yourself. This would allow you to recover your orientation quicker and in an easier fashion.

2.  A common mistake amongst novice kitesurfers is that they try to steer with their boards leading. This is a mistake because kitesurfing is largely about the kite. Hence, if you are changing directions then you should do so with the kite leading as against doing so with the board leading.

3.  Kitesurfing involves a lot of stunts and jumps. These stunts and jumps are usually done while the kitesurfer is on the wave because it is easier for the kite to get its head this way. However, if you want to ride the wave without any stunts or jumps, you should keep the kite as low as possible.

4.  Often, kitesurfers tend to have trouble and wash out because the lines lose tension. Losing tension in the lines can result in you being unable to guide your movement. When this happens you can regain control by simply grabbing the front lines above the bar and pulling strongly.

5.  One of the best ways of mastering and conquering a wave is to pick it out early. Going for a wave once it’s already formed would not result in you maintaining your seat for long. Therefore, you should pick a wave early and get the sense of it early on.

6.  Getting the sense of the wave is important because it would allow you to visualize its movements and antics. Once you can do this, then half the battle with the wave is over and you can focus on beating the wind.

7.  When you start dropping into a wave it is wise to lower your center of gravity by bending your knees. As is logical, a lowered center of gravity means greater balance and even better control.

First, and of course, you need to have the right gear. Safety is always key. Make sure that before you perform any water sport, that you have the right flotation and safety devices in place. It’s probable that you will fall into the water, especially at first while you are learning to gain balance and strength. It’s highly recommended that you purchase a training kitesurf, so that you can learn how to maneuver it, and so that you can gain confidence to use it. To this end, you should probably work with a trainer at first. Don’t attempt to just jump into the ocean with your kitesurf on your first try. Again, keep safety in mind first.

When you have the right equipment, then you would start out at a level of water that comes up to your waist. Put on your helmet. and make sure that if the kitesurf has a leash, that the leash is attached to the harness. Then, you can start to unleash your kite. Your kite, rather, the air that catches the kite, will lead you out to deep waters. Make sure that your feet have proper placement in their compartments, and that you lean back, as you are being led into deeper waters. You will be able to gain balance as the kite pulls against the currents of the water. If you need to gain balance on the kitesurf, simply bend your knees to gain your balance back.

When you get the feel, and the confidence of staying on your kiteboard, then you can practice steering the kiteboard. You move your weight against the wind, to move towards where you’d like to go. Again, once you get the hang of things, it’s not hard to learn this sport at all. But you will need a bit of practice. And, it can’t be stated enough that because this is a deep water activity, you need to be very safe, and work with someone for a time.

Kitesurfing is one of the most complex sports to master because it requires the individual to not only have knowledge of kitesurfing and surfing but to also learn to navigate the seas and air simultaneously. This is why most beginning kitesurfers are required to try on trainer kites before they actually go for the real thing. Even after training with a trainer kite, a kitesurfer has to make some tough decisions while buying the kitesurf kite. Here are some questions that you should be asking yourself before you purchase a kitesurf kite.

What types of kite do you want?

When choosing the type of kite, you would face three options. These are the C shaped kites, the Bow kites or the Hybrid kites. As the sport has progressed, the quality and control of these kites has improved. The C shaped kites are the oldest and provide the minimal control which is why they are considered to be dangerous. Bow kites are easiest to relaunch in the water, park and ride because of their flat shape. The Hybrid kite is the most advanced of the lot and offers 100 percent depower which also makes it the safest.

What size should your kite be?

There are three sizes of kitesurfer kites in the market and they all correspond to different wind speeds. These sizes are small which corresponds to 20 to 25 mph, the medium which plays at 15 to 20 mph and the large which feels at home at 8 to 15 mph. For a beginner, the medium sized kite is recommended because when these are combined with large kiteboards they create the safest and the most comfortable combination. Furthermore, the combination of medium sized kites and large sized kiteboards is also applicable to the widest wind range, making the combination more useful than any other configuration.

Should you go for power kites?

It is also worth considering whether you want power kites or not. Power kites are the most advanced type of kites in the market as they contain added features like zippers, bladders, safety release systems and a slew of other knick knacks. While added features may make it easier to control the kite, they would also require you to learn more new things.

Do you want two lines or four lines?

The decision between two line and four line kites is a fairly easy one. A four line kite would offer you greater control and increased performance while a two line kite would be much easier to set up. Hence, you can select either one of these options depending upon what you value more, the performance of the kite or the convenience.

People always want to know how much time it will take to start kitesurfing. For example, if they go through some training, how many hours does it take to learn and be able to kitesurf solo? Well, it really depends on the person, but estimates range from 8 to 16 hours.
