The level of the hurt and trauma of the event is as different as each person that has lived through it. The hurts and life effecting actions range from the death of parents, to sexual abuse, rejection, abandonment. Some have never experienced the love they so yearn for from their parents while others suffer from the guilt of being responsible for the death of a sibling. As with the different levels of hurt there are just that many different types of hurt.

There is nothing that can diminish the severity of this life altering event, nor is there anything that can take it away or remove it from your memory. It, in part, has made you who you are today. That leads me to this post. Who are you today?

Are you allowing that tragic event and hurt to control you today? Is it something that you live for instead of live with?

I know several people who are allowing an event they had no control over in their past control the events of their present. Instead of them taking control over the past event, they are allowing it to take control over them.

Some have allowed their past hurt to fester and control them so much that it has cause them to lose their marriage, caused them to become addicted to drugs or alcohol. It has caused them to be unable to hold a job, have anger issues, or hold such a since of isolation and sometimes superiority that they are unable to get along with or understand the hurts of others. Some put up a wall that is so high and so thick that they don’t allow anyone to get close to them and push away those who love them and they don’t allow themselves to get close to others.

They are allowing the trauma that they hate so much to control their life and lose out on what God wants to give them and that is true peace and enjoyment of life as it is now….today.

The past can not be changed, but you do have the power and control of your today and tomorrow.

You have the power through Christ Jesus to improve your life today by making peace with your yesterday. Living in the past hurt and trauma is giving control to that hurt as well as those that hurt you. Raise above it and them by making peace. If it is an individual who hurt you, forgive them and make peace.

If you kept record of our sins, no one could last long. But you forgive us, and so we will worship you. With all my heart, I am waiting, LORD, for you! I trust your promises. Psalm 130:3-5 CEV

Most important of all, you must sincerely love each other, because love wipes away many sins. 1 Peter 4:8 CEV

By doing so you are taking back control, it isn’t an easy thing to do and can only be d0ne, in my opinion, with Jesus Christ, but by doing so, you are changing your life from that moment forward. It will allow you to take control of who you are today. Just as the bad event molded your life from the past, making peace with it will change your life in the future. Taking control of today, living for today not what happened yesterday.

Open yourself up, break down your wall. You have survived what occurred prior so nothing can hurt you worse in your future. You are stronger than you realize. Taking control of your today allows for you to plan your tomorrow.

Plan your life for the future. Look forward not backward. Set goals. Goals are a way that says “I am in control.” Setting them means you have a plan. Some don’t set goals for fear of not meeting the goal, they feel that will make then a failure. Missing a goal does not make you a failure it makes you a success, because it shows you can try, you are focused on the future instead of living in the past.

Missing a goal is another way of learning. Personally I have many times learned more by missing a goal than by meeting a goal.

My purpose here is not to down play what has happened to you in the past, it was awful. My purpose here is to encourage you to accept your past and make peace with it, so you can become who God intents you to be today and tomorrow. Honor Him by moving forward, and taking control of your today and planning your tomorrow.

May God guide your steps as you heal, grow and move forward.

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. Jeremiah 33:3 NIV

They go on and on about the car, how it is just what they were looking for. They ask if you will come take a look at the car, take it for a test drive so you can give them your honest opinion about the great vehicle.

You are flattered that they value your opinion and are glad to take them up on the offer to help. You look at the car and even agree it is in great shape and the price isn’t bad and mention that with a little bit of negotiating they price would be perfect.

Now that they have you agreeing with them about the car they mention that they have the down payment, and remind you about that new job they just got five months ago so making the payments will be not problem. They finish that statement with a “but.” Even though they have the down payment, and can make the payments, they don’t qualify for a loan and they ask if you would be willing to co-sign for them. They give you every assurance that they can make the payments and that you would have nothing to worry about. Can you help them out and just “give them a signature?”

Now, lets take a look at this. They have the down payment, and income from a job of five months that will more than cover the monthly payments. Why would they need a co-signer? Simple, contrary to the surface indications that they can afford this car, the bank as proof that this person does not make payments on time or maybe not at all. The bank considers this person too high a risk to lend them money without the guarantee, in the form of a signature, from someone who has a proven track record of making regular on time payments. That way, when your friend or relative misses a payment or two, or three (and they will, otherwise they wouldn’t need the co-signer) the bank can and will count on you to cover the loan.

This concept of co-signing isn’t a new one. For thousands of years people have been guaranteeing the loans of others and are then stuck holding the bag (paying off the loan)

It’s stupid to guarantee someone’s loan. Proverbs 17:18

So if the concept of co-signing or guaranteeing has been something so bad and common that God felt it necessary to put a warning in the Bible about it, why would any one co-sign a loan for anything? After all, we have been warned it is “stupid.”

So since the Bible is what I consider “Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth” and more importantly, God’s word, I would never co-sign a loan, regardless of amount, for anyone.

When a bank requires a co-signer they are stating “this person can’t manage money can’t be trusted with this money”

Are you mean, unloving or not a good friend if you don’t “help out” by co-signing? Actually you are just the opposite. You are a person who is not willing to enable your friend or loved one to continue to mis-manage their money as well as someone who is following Biblical guidance.

You are someone who just may be the person who helps your friend or family member begin a new journey in life. You can take this opportunity to sit with them and help them work a budget teach them how to handle their money so pay for a car on their own without the help of anyone else.

Give a man a fish feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.

How do you want to help your friend or loved one?

What to you think of when you here the word “economy?” As of late that word is usually prefaced by “in this” so put it together and your have “in this economy.”

The media is not using these three words in positive way. These words are usually in the same topic matter as foreclosure, unemployment rate, stock market is down, and the like.

When you hear these words, if you are like most people, you probably get a little scared. You are most likely feeling some uncertainty and fear.

All this negative media talk creates fear in most, fear causes people to make knee jerk decisions that many times would never be made with a calm positive attitude and after much research.

On April 23 of this year Dave Ramsey presented the Town Hall For Hope, it was a live even that originally thought would be aired in around 500 venues around the country. Well, the American people are so disparate to hear something positive, to hear a word of hope that over 6000 venues signed up to air this even. Over a million people attended in person. Response was so overwhelming, that Fox Business Network decided to air the event live. They didn’t just air the actual town hall, they aird an one hour pre-show as well as a 30-minute post show. That is 3 hours that Fox Business gave to this event.

On top of that Fox Business Network is re-airing all three hours on April 25 and again on April 26. Now, for a large network like Fox to take 9 total hours out of their normal programming to air a special event like this you know if must be hitting a topic matter that American’s want to hear.

Why? Why is this so popular? It is a sign that we, you and me, are tired of the doom and gloom. It is a sign that we want hope and need to hear something speak this hope and most importantly remind us that our hope is NOT in the government but in our Lord Jesus.

This economey can be turned around by you and me. I can be turned around by focusing on Christ, by doing the right thing which is spending if we have the means. We can return hope to ourselves by giving to others, if not financially, then by giving of our time.

It is time we took back our country. Take action and know who your Senators and House of Representatives are. Know how they are voting and if it is not how you agree, or acting in a way that you expeceted them to act when you voted for them, then contact them. If their voting record doesn’t change, take action and vote them out next term.

Whining provokes fear, prayer, faith and action creates hope.

Take back your country, choose hope!

Today was no exception. Have you ever really given thought to the power of hands?

Who’s Hands?

A basketball in my hands is worth about $19. A basketball in Michael Jordan’s hands is worth about $33 million. It depends whose hands it’s in.

A baseball in my hands is worth about $6. A baseball in Roger Clemens’ hands is worth $475 million. It depends on whose hands it’s in.

A tennis racket is useless in my hands. A tennis racket in Andre Agassi’s hands is worth millions. It depends whose hands it’s in.

A rod in my hands will keep away an angry dog. A rod in Moses’ hands will part the mighty sea. It depends whose hands it’s in.

A slingshot in my hands is a kid’s toy. A slingshot in David’s hand is a mighty weapon. It depends whose hands it’s in.

Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in my hands is a couple of fish sandwiches. Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in Jesus’ hands will feed thousands. It depends whose hands it’s in.

Nails in my hands might produce a birdhouse. Nails in Jesus Christ’s hands will Produce salvation for the entire world. It depends whose hands it’s in.

As you see now, it depends whose hands it’s in. So put your concerns, your worries, your fears, your hopes, your dreams, your families and your relationships in God’s hands because… It depends whose hands it’s in.

Now that you have read this, it is in YOUR hands. What will YOU do with it?

Let’s face it most of us don’t have a clue about what it takes to have a successful marriage which is evident by the divorce rate including my own. However, there is a big difference between having a marriage that failed in divorce for which you have attempted to learn from as well as stand for by praying for restoration and those who divorce only to remarry which statistics show second and third marriages have a higher divorce rate than first marriages. Meaning very few are willing to learn how to be in a successful marriage.

I vow to not to be a part of that cycle. I married one man and will stand for restoration of that relationship til death, as I promised to him as well as to God.

So what does it take to have a successful marriage?

Love and respect. Really, this concept holds true for any relationship but especially in marriage.

Let’s look at Ephesians 5:22-33 NIV

Wives and Husbands

22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body. 31“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[b] 32This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

How can we go past what the Bible says about how to relate to our spouse? How can good Christian men and women, who committed themselves in marriage to the man or women they love get so messed up? Simple, we live in a broken world and are not focused on Christ.

Without a total and complete focus on our Creator Jesus Christ, on a daily basis women fall very short of properly respecting their husband and men fall very short of properly loving their wife.

We are too selfish. We are too self centered. It isn’t the fault of the husband and it isn’t the fault of the wife. It is the fault of both. Now I don’t want to get into how one spouse cheated or emotionally disconnected while the other spouse was faithful and trying. The bottom line is, if you are two people living in one house each of you have some portion of responsibility of the success and/or failure of the marriage, period.

So what do you do to fix what is broken, or make better what you have?

First, Pray! Without prayer, individually and together as a couple you are setting yourselves up for a problem if not failure. Asking Jesus Christ into your marriage on a daily basis is a must. Are there some successful marriage that don’t have Christ as the foundation? Well, I believe there marriages that continue to exist without Christ, but doubt they are successful, meaning are they are filled with love & respect for each other and treat each other as such? Without Christ there is something missing.

Second, marriage takes work, you must first commit to work on the relationship together. One person can’t keep the marriage a float, it takes two. Work isn’t just physical labor of maintaining the household such as taking out the trash, mowing the lawn or doing the laundry. Work includes a conscience effort to make quality time with your spouse. Open communication is part of work. Can you share anything with your spouse without fear of being ridiculed or having them “roll their eyes” at you? You must have total trust in that person to do that. Trust is built on open, transparent communication and actions.

You must be able to know that your spouse is trustworthy. Be open and honest with each other. As noted above, there may be some marriages that survive without Christ as a foundation but many times in those marriages there is a level of deception. Once spouse is hiding something from the other. Maybe it is a financial issue, maybe they are talking to a person of the opposite sex or surfing undesirable sites on the internet. Bottom line if there is deception in a marriage there is a level of dis-trust and that is like an infection that festers for a lifetime.

This circles us right back around to Love & Respect. With Christ as your foundation, and daily prayer there will be a natural desire to show Love & Respect to your spouse which will make it easier to work on the relationship and in turn create an environment of total transparency and openness.

I know that is what God intends for us in a marriage a relationship, it should be a little heaven on earth.

On a closing note, I highly recommend the book “Love & Respect” by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs as it goes into detail about how to truly love and respect your spouse. It is a wonderful read for both men and women and something that can be done together to bring you both closer together.

We all do it. Take on more and more until we are spread too thin. Women especially are guilty of this. We think we can do it all. But can we? Can we really do it all?

Sadly, no we cannot. As we take on more and more responsibility we reach a point where things get missed, time lines slip, or are only done halfway.

In recent months I have found myself in this particular situation. With a major move, on top of an unplanned life changing event, intertwined with a full time job. In that mix I have been providing financial coaching, running a forum and trying to blog on three separate sites. All this while maintaining a house inside and out, and looking out for my elderly parents. Whew, I am lucky I only have three furry felines to worry about instead of kids.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying my life is busier than anyone else, on the contrary, I know there are those of you out there who are single parents who, on top of much that was mentioned above, are carting kids to ball games and music lessons.

Face it, we are all busy, and we all think “I can do it all“, but deep down we know we are just spread too thin. We get tired and look for short cuts. Instead of grocery shopping maybe we go through the drive through to save time. It may save time but is costs money, much more than a planned grocery shopping trip.

Spreading ourselves too thin in the long run will cost more money as well as missed quality time with family.

Family units are under attack by the enemy, and one of his schemes is to get us to spread ourselves too thin with all the things of this world. He does this to get us to take our focus off family time and off worship time. If you are too busy to spend quality time with the family, how do you find quite time to spend with your Lord in worship? When was the last time you sat alone, in the quite for 15 minutes and read the Bible and prayed? When was the last time you prayed with you spouse, your kids, or the family unit as a whole?

Take a look at how long you are spending at work. Yes, work is important as well as maintaining a job. It is so easy to get wrapped up in work, spending just an extra 30 minutes or an hour there. But at what cost to the family unit? Is that extra hour at work worth running around when you get home to catch up? Or worse by the time you get home you are so tired from work you just veg on the couch.

Why not sit down, take a deep breath and look at all you are doing. Take a look at just two things you could cut out of your busy schedule that would enhance time spent as a family. Perhaps you take the kids out of dance for a quarter or two, that would be a great opportunity for the family to spend that two or three hours together, preparing dinner together and actually eating together at the table instead of in front of the TV.

Are you spending your time in the right places or are you spread to thin?

Some people go from year to year thinking “I hope this year will be different” but yet they don’t do anything to make the year different. Your life will not change for the good if you don’t put some effort into it. One definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.” In other words, this year will be no different for you if you do the same thing you did last year.

Joel Osteen had a great message this week about continually learning to improve ourselves. In that message he said the average person is in their car 300 hours a year commuting from place to place. 300 hours! That is a lot of time trapped in one small location. What are you doing with that time? Are you talking on your cell phone? Listing to the “goober and gomer” show on the radio? Or worse, just sitting there complaining about traffic, which is the least productive thing you can do.

Why not set a goal for yourself this year that anytime you are in the car you will use that time to listen to an inspirational learning CD? Think how many CD’s you could listen too in 300 hours. I started this last year by listen to Joel’s “Become A Better You” CDs, it was so good that I must have listened to it seven times or more and each time I took something new from it. I even bought it for a couple of friends this year for Christmas. Anyway, my point is, I spent that time in my car listening to something that I could learn from, I used the time in my car to improve myself and grow both spiritually and emotionally.

So what if you have small children, it is hard to listen to something like that with kids in the car you say. Well, I don’t have kids, but can only imagine what it is like being in a car with them for a while. Why not play a game with the kids, have them look for things in nature that is unique, like a special cloud formation, are even seeing a deer or cow back in the woods off the road. Then say a prayer with them out loud in the car thanking God for the wonderful cloud formation or what ever the creation from God they may have seen. It will teach them to appreciate what God has created, and isn’t that better then them playing a video game?

Sometimes, if you are alone in the car, tired from the day, needing some peace and quite, take that time to converse with your Lord. Talk out loud to Him. Tell Him about your day, what upset you, thank Him for something that may have happened. Listen to Him, he will speak to you in ways you may not realize, even by giving you are extra stop light to insure you are not in that accident that just happened up the road a bit.

Time in the car alone is also a good time to pray for others. Intercede on their behalf. I pray daily for my covenant husband on my way to work and on the way home as well (I pray for him when I am not in the car too). Anytime I see a rescue vehicle flying by with lights and sirens on, I say a prayer for not only the drivers in the rescue vehicle but for the person they are on their way to rescue, as it usually means someone is hurting or not feeling well. I pray for individuals I see a car accident on the side of the road as their day and possibly their life and the lives of their families has changed sometimes dramatically in an instant.

This morning I had switched vehicles and my teaching CD was in the other car so I was listening to the local Christian music station, when I made a turn I was directly into the most beautiful sunrise I have seen in a long time. I took that moment to thank God for letting me see that, and showing me that He lives and will be guiding me though my day. Sadly, I admit that in the past I have not taken in the beauty of what our Lord presents us through His creations. But just seeing that sunrise was a reminder, a small learning experience that I must always stay focused on the “Son.”

How is praying a learning or growth experience? It puts others first rather than yourself, and we all need to learn that. It teaches us to be a little less selfish and self-centered and more selfless.

So for this 2009, what will you do to become a better you? What will you do to “make this year different than last year?”

Make a goal to change what you do while you are in your car. Take that travel time of 300 hours this year and make it more than just getting from point A to point B. Make it a self improvement journey!

May God Bless you this new year of 2009!

The movie is fantastic and a must see for everyone who is married, separated or divorced.

Ladies – Have you ever felt like your husband just doesn’t understand you. That they have no clue about all the hard work you do? Have you ever felt bitter or angry that you work all day and then are expected to clean the house, do the laundry, take care of the kids, go shopping, etc, and it still isn’t enough?

Gentlemen – Do you think that all your hard work is not appreciated and that you are not respected? After all, you work hard all day only to come home to a house that isn’t like YOU think it should be, right?

Has this anger, bitterness and resentment that you have been harboring over the years started to affect your communication and affection toward your spouse? Has it affected your desire to care about your spouse? Have you even started to doubt your love for your spouse? Are you starting to think you would have more peace if you just “got out?”

Catherine & Caleb, the main characters in the movie felt the same. Neither one had taken the time over their seven year marriage to understand or learn about each other. They lived their own lives, they grew farther and farther apart. They were both tempted, and those temptations lead to thoughts and desires of just giving up on their marriage.

As you watch the movie you will find yourself saying “I thought I was the only one going through this.” Rest assured, you are not and this movie is a testament to that. Most marriages go through this to some extent, sadly from the divorce statistics, it seems only half survive. As one line in the movie says “when most people promise ‘for better or for worse’ they only mean for the better” and give up or run away when it gets worse.

Caleb was talking to his dad about the fact that he and Catherine were headed for divorce. His dad asked him to hold off, just for 40 days and offered him the book “The Love Dare”. Caleb had enough desire in him to save his marriage that he decided to give it a try, but it was a half hearted try at best. After a few weeks of trying The Love Dare, Caleb was ready to give up until his dad explains what love is all about, and what it takes to be able to give unconditional love.

This movie has a little bit of everything, it will make you laugh and cry as it touches on nearly every area of life, including work, your parents, even the neighbors. It is a great reminder of several things:

God expects us to love our spouse as He loves the church.

God’s love for us is unconditional, that is the example we are to follow with our spouse by loving them unconditionally as well.

Love is not a feeling, it is a commitment.

Marriage is not a contract, it is a covenant for a lifetime.

With Jesus Christ as our foundation all marriages can succeed, be healed, and restored.

This movie is worth seeing, and I would see it again in a heartbeat. Please pray it will touch couples nationwide and show that marriage and love is not a fight, but it is something worth fighting for, regardless of the circumstances.

Today, I received one of those emails from my uncle. It is was titled “The Duck & the Devil.” I couldn’t even imagine what this could possible be about so I read in full…and Wow, it hit home.

It is a good reminder that no matter what we have done in the past or what we are doing now, God was and is there watching our every move. No matter the lye, if you cheated, in debt, scared, holding a grudge, have feelings of anger, hatred, bitterness, guilt or shame, no matter what you have done, God was there then and is there now, waiting for you to reach up to Him, ready to forgive – all you have to do is ask Him.

You may be surprised to know that the person you wronged, your friends, parents, spouse, whoever it is will also forgive you, if they haven’t already.

It is the evil one making you think that you can’t change your past, correct a wrong, go home. Whatever the issue, satan will make you feel through pride, guilt and shame that you are such a louse you could never go back to correct your wrong. That is so far from the truth!

The truth is, ask God for forgiveness and all wrongs will be washed away, give Him a chance and then give your family and friends the same chance, take a risk, you have nothing to lose and so much to gain.

Please read “The Duck & the Devil” – think about it, pray about it, live it.

There was a little boy visiting his grandparents on their farm. He was given a slingshot to play with out in the woods. He practiced in the woods; but he could never hit the target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back home for dinner. As he was walking back he saw Grandma’s pet duck. Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly, hit the duck square in the head and killed it. He was shocked and grieved!

In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the wood pile; only to see his sister watching! Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing.

After lunch the next day Grandma said, ‘Sally, let’s wash the dishes’ But Sally said, ‘Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.’ Then she whispered to him, ‘Remember the duck?’ So Johnny did the dishes.

Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing and Grandma said, ‘I’m sorry but I need Sally to help make supper.’ Sally just smiled and said, ‘Well that’s all right because Johnny told me he wanted to help.’ She whispered again, ‘Remember the duck?’ So Sally went fishing and Johnny stayed to help.

After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally’s; he finally couldn’t stand it any longer.

He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck.

Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said, ‘Sweetheart, I know. You see, I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing, but because I love you, I forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make a slave of you.’

Whatever is in your past, whatever you have done the devil keeps throwing it up in your face (lying, cheating, debt, fear, bad habits,
hatred, anger, bitterness, etc.)…whatever it is…You need to know that God was standing at the window and He saw the whole thing.

He has seen your whole life. He wants you to know that He loves you and that you are forgiven. He’s just wondering how long you will let the devil make a slave of you.

The great thing about God is that when you ask for forgiveness; He not only forgives you, but He forgets.

It is by God’s grace and mercy that we are saved.

Reach up to Him today, ask forgiveness, go to those you have wronged. Start living a life free from guilt and shame.
