Chelsea striker Drogba joined famous stars from cinema, music and fashion world in the UK to celebrate Kerala - 'God's own country', as one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

"Kerala is a dream place", said Drogba, who came to watch 'Your Moment is waiting,' an ad film of Kerala Tourism, premiered at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea.

"It's my area. I am here to support anything that happens in my area," said the Ivory Coast captain, whose team Chelsea's home ground Stamdford Bridge. Drogba was accompanied by his wife Alla.

'Your Moment is waiting,' which is directed by Vodaphone's ZooZoo ad-fame Prakash Varma for Kerala Tourism's new global publicity campaign, captured the imagination of a host of celebrities, including former England striker Gary Linekar, current 400 metres Olympic gold medalist Christine Ohuruogu and leading NRI industrialist, Lord Swraj Paul. Indian-origin British Labour MP Keith Vaz and "Slumdog Millionnaire" actor Dev Patel were among the guests.

"It's a great film. Now I feel I have to go back to Kerala to discover it again," said Malayalam megastar MohanLal, who posed for photographs with many members of the Indian community in London. Linekar, who won the Golden Boot at the 1986 Mexico World Cup, said his model-presenter wife Daniele has been persuading him to visit Kerala.

"It is brilliantly made film reflecting the true image of Kerala as place full of surprises," she said. "Kerala is the opposite of what you expect in India," said famous British photographer Seamus Murphy. "Kerala is slow, less crowded and unspoilt." Among the early guests at the premiere was Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger's daughter Jade Jagger, a former model and jewellery designer.

"Kerala is a very interesting place, very spiritual. It is a very special place in India," said Jade Jagger, who has visited Kerala several times. The guests were mesmerised by Kerala's classical dance forms 'Mohiniattam' and 'Ottamthullal' performed by Corinne Mathow from France and Hartmut Schmidt from Germany. Kerala Tourism Secretary Dr Venu V, who spearheaded the Incedible Indian campaign, explained that the film was about connecting with potential visitors.

"We are trying to be different from others by saying pretty pictures don't make a destination, but experiences make a destination." Kerala Tourism Director M Shivshankar said "something in Kerala appeals to the visitors. Many people who came to the state have come across a self-discovering experience."

A Kerala boy wins silver medal at Estonia world athlete meet

Class 11 student Binish K. Shaji Monday won silver medal at the World School Athletics championship held in Estonia in northern Europe.

Shaji, finished second in the 200 meter race in the international event.

As soon as the news came in, the town and St. George School Kothamangalam, about 60 km from Kochi, where he studies, began celebrating by distributing sweets.

Shaji was the national champion in 100 and 200 meters, and silver medallist in the long jump events at the inter-school meet held in Kochi this year. This is the first time that India is participating in the world school championship and has sent a 12-member group of which five are from Kerala.

Shaji and his parents are living in a rented house. While Shaji’s father is a mason, his mother Beena eke out a livelihood stitching clothes at the outhouse. “It is so gratifying to hear this wonderful news that my son has won a medal. We owe everything to god and all our well wishers who are helping us,” said Beena.

Shaji’s coach Raju Paul expressed confidence about the boy’s “immense talent” saying “he is certain to represent the country in the Olympics”.

Kerala Tourism has received a timely boost during the lean season, with UK based style magazine Vogue featuring visuals from Kerala in its latest issue. The magazine’s fashion crew opted to have the backwaters and paddy fields of the Kerala among other visuals as the backdrop to its "Indian summer shoot" that is featured in the June edition of the magazine.

According to a report in Economic Times, commenting on the latest recognition for brand Kerala Tourism, V Venu, Tourism Secretary of Kerala said that the fashion shoot in an exotic setting provides a sheen of importance and that it was the same sheen of importance that a person taking a vacation photo felt, chronicling themselves in a foreign place or next to a celebrity. The photo feature by master French photographer Patrick Demarchelier is expected to underline the brand image that Kerala tourism has built over the years of being an up market locale offering Experiential Tourism products.

The spread of the message in the UK market is particularly appealing to Kerala tourism, considering that the UK is Kerala’s largest source market, which accounted for 1.41 lakh tourists to the state in 2008, out of the 5.99 lakh international tourists who visited Kerala last year.

Floating retail store in the backwaters of Kuttanad region in Kerala

The God's own country, quite famous for the scenic backwaters and clean water bodies, now has started the program in the form of a floating retail store is set to ease the woes of almost a million people living in the vicinity of backwaters of Kuttanad region in Kerala.

The Kerala State Co-operative Consumers Federation Ltd, an apex body of consumer cooperatives in the state has started the program called "Triveni". Triveni will have the small shopping items that the locals require. In that way, the program comes as a blessing to the locals, who hitherto had to visit the nearest town to shop for the smallest of their needs.

In the many places of Kuttanad, there are not many road accesses for millions of people. They have to go to town and spend a lot of money for many facilities. The floating "Triveni" will go to their doorsteps and deliver good quality products at a reasonable price.

"Triveni" operates from eight in the morning till six in the evening, catering to numerous people, who are happy as the store will save them time and money for the shopping errands to the nearest towns. The store equipped with the Internet and powered by solar energy, will touch and anchor at almost 50 locations in the backwaters everyday.

Considering certain unique aspects related to "Triveni", the Consumerfed has approached the Guinness Book of World Records to endorse these facts in the next edition. Though small boats selling fruits and vegetables in the "floating markets" are a common sight in countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and Venezuela, "Triveni" seems to be the only full fledged retail store, the first of its kind.

Bollywood hitmaker Priyadarshan has a dream - an IPL team from Kerala! He is working religiously towards it, though he says it’s too early to divulge details.
It is not a secret that his second love is cricket.
An ardent follower, student and player of the game in his college days, this super director keeps a regular tab on the game.
IPL is set to add four more teams after two years and now Kerala can hope to be one among them. “Yes, it’s my dream. We have the talent, but not the exposure and world class training facilities.
The growth of the game and realisation of our IPL dream would depend a lot on the support of the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA), especially in providing state-of-the-art facilities,” he said on the sidelines of an interaction with players of ‘City Cricketers’, a leading club here that he has taken over as president. Dr Shashi Tharoor, the new Union Minister of State for External Affairs accepted chairmanship of the club a fortnight ago, while Malayalam superhero Mohanlal is patron of the club, adding to the filmy touch.
The Priyadarshan-Mohanlal duo came out with many Malayalam blockbusters before the former moved on to Bollywood and created superhits there. The duo is now coming together to create a ‘blockbuster’ of a different kind. Priyadarshan’s keen cricketing sense and Mohanlal’s star value could combine to produce another big cricketing brand.
Priyadarshan was instrumental in giving a handful of young Kerala cricketers a chance to attend the selection trials of the Kolkata Knight Riders. “They might not have made it to the first XI though all of them - N Niaz, Mohammed Sanuth, Rohan Prem, P Prashanth and teenage batting sensation Sanju V Samson - were shortlisted for the camp. Kalarippayatt

Kalarippayatt is a martial art originating and practiced in Kerala. It incorporates strikes, kicks, grappling, martial dance and weaponry as well as healing techniques. Regional variances of the Kalarippayattu are classified into Northern, Southern and Central styles.

The term Kalarippayatt is formed from the words “kalari” meaning school or gymnasium and payattu meaning to fight or to exercise.

Kalarippayatt may be one of the oldest martial arts in existence. Masters of Kalarippayattu are known as “Asaan or Gurukkal.

Northern Kalarippayatt (practiced mainly in the northern Malabar region of Kozhikode and Kannur) places comparatively more emphasis on weapons than on empty hands. Northern Kalarippayatt is distinguished by its meippayattu (physical training and use of full-body oil massage) to increase the practitioner’s flexibility and to treat muscle injuries incurred during practice. The term for such massages is thirummal and the massage specifically for physical flexibility chavutti thirummal (massage using feet pressure over the entire body).

In southern styles of Kalarippayatt (practiced mainly in old Travancore including the present Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu), practice and fighting techniques emphasize empty hands and applications.

The central style (practiced mainly in Thrissur, Malappuram, Palakkad and certain parts of Ernakulam districts is a composite from both the northern and southern styles that includes northern meippayattu preliminary exercises, southern emphasis on empty-hand techniques and its own distinctive techniques.

Weapons used in Kalarippayatt are Long Staff, Medium Stick, Long Stick, Flexible Sword, Short Stick, Curved Stick, Club or

Mace, Knife or Dagger, Machete or Kukri, Short Sword, Long Sword, Round Shield Spear etc.

It is claimed that learned persons can disable or kill their opponents by a mere touch in a Marmam (vulnerable parts of the human body). Marmam is taught only to the promising and levelheaded persons to forbid misuse of the technique.

Influence of kalarippayatt can be seen in major classical art forms of Kerala, mainly Kathakali.

Koothu

Chakyar Koothu is a performing art form of Kerala. It is a solo narrative performance interspersed with mime and comic interludes. However, unlike the stand-up comic, the performer has a wider leeway in that he can heckle the audience. This highly refined art form narrating stories from Hindu epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas ( belonging to ancient times), combined with prevailing socio-political events, were originally performed in temples by members of Chakyar community along with Ambalavasi Nambiars. Chakyar narrates the story based on Sanskrit “champu prabandha” - mixture of prose and poetry. The medium used is refined Malayalam along with the original Sanskrit text.

In Chakyar koothu, facial expressions are important rather than choreography. Traditionally it was performed in Koothambalam, a place specially designed to perform Kutiyattam and Chakyar Koothu, inside a Hindu temple. The performer begins with a prayer to the deity of the temple. He then goes on to narrate a verse in Sanskrit before explaining it in Malayalam. The narration that follows touches upon social factors and various current events with great wit and humor.

A mizhav (A big percussion instrument made of copper) and a pair of cymbals are the only instruments accompany the performance.

Chakyar Koothu was performed only in Koothambalams of Hindu temples. Natyacharya Vidushakaratnam Padma Shri Guru Maani Madhava Chakyar a visionary and virtuoso of this art took Koothu and Koodiyattam outside the temples to the common people. He is considered as the greatest Chakyar Koothu and Kutiyattam artist of modern times.

He performed Chakyar Koothu for All India Radio and Doordarshan for the first time, which popularized this traditional art form among the common man.

Nangyar Koothu is a traditional art form performed by the women of the Ambalavasi Nambiar community of Kerala, known as Nangyaramma. Nangiarkoothu, an offshoot of Kutiyattam, is a solo performance with an antiquity of 1500 years. Nangiar koothu is the sole domain of female artistes.

The stories for the performance are taken from the text Sree Krishna Charitam, depicting the life of Hindu God Krishna. During the performance the actress presents the long-winded stories of Lord Krishna through facial expressions, hand gestures and body movements with the accompaniment of holy drum Mizhavu.

Koodiyattam or Kutiyattam

Koodiyattam, a Traditional art form of Kerala, performed in the Sanskrit language in Hindu temples, it is believed to be at 2000 years old. It is officially recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The meaning of Koodiyattam is combined acting, a combined performance of Chakyar (a community in Kerala) and Nangyar (the women of Ambalavasi Nambiar Caste). The main actor is a Chakyar who performs the ritualistic Koothu and Kutiyattam inside the temple or in the Koothambalam. The female roles are played by Nangyar.

Traditionally the main musical instruments used in Koodiyattam are Mizhavu, Kuzhitalam, Etakka, Kurumkuzhal and Sankhu.Mizhavu, the most prominent of these is a percussion instrument which is played by a person of the Ambalavas Nambiar caste accompanied by Nangyaramma playing the kuzhithalam (a type of cymbal).

In 1955 Guru Maani Madhava Chakyar performed Koodiyattam outside the temple for the first time. For performing the art forms outside the temples he faced lot of problems from the Chakyar community.

The performance of the maestro Maani Maadhava Chakyar made great impact on the people and art critics so that Koodiyattam and Mani Madhava Chakyar became famous outside Kerala also. He performed Koodiyattam all over India and popularized the traditional art form.

Theyyam

The Theyyam or Theyyattam is a popular ritual art form of north Kerala particularly presented in the Kannur and Kasargod districts. As a living cult with centuries old traditions, ritual and custom, it embraces all castes and classes of Hindu religion. The term Theyyam is a corrupt form of Daivam (God). It is a rare combination of dance and music and reflects important features of a tribal culture. People here consider Theyyam as a God and they seek blessings from Theyyam.

The Theyyam dance is generally performed in front of the village shrines. It is also performed in the houses as ancestor worship.

Theyyam performs with elaborate make-up and costumes. There are different patterns of face painting for different types of theyyams. All dancers take a shield and sword in their hands.

Theyyam Dancer performs different steps repeated systematically, circumambulates the shrine and runs in the courtyard dances. Theyyam is accompanied by folk musical instruments like chenda, tudi, kuzhal and veekni are played with rhythm and recitation of the ritual songs describes the myths and legends of the particular diety.

Bekal is a tourist place located on the shores of the Arabian Sea in Kasargod district of Kerala. Extremely scenic landscape, extensive beaches and backwaters and unspoilt environment qualified Bekkal as a potential site for an International standard beach destination.

Kasaragod, the northern end of Kerala, is a magical land of forts, rivers, beaches, backwaters, lush green forests, hills and plantations.

The important tourist attractions here are the magnificent 300 year old Bekal Fort and the Bekal beach surrounding the fort.

Bekal fort is the largest and best preserved fort in Kerala. The Fort is built by the Jeheri Nayak dynasty and completed during the period of Sivappa Nayak. Bekal subsequently fell into the hands of the Mysore Sultans. The Tipu Sulthan who died fighting against the British and subsequently the Bekal fort came under the British East India Company.

There is an old mosque nearby said to have been built by the Tipu Sultan of Mysore.

In 1992, the Government of India declared Bekal as a Special Tourism Area. Bekal Resorts Development Corporation Ltd (BRDC) was formed in 1995 with the Chief Secretary to Government of Kerala as Chairman, senior Government officials as Directors and Managing Director to develop Bekal as an international standard Beach Tourist Destination. BRDC focuses on planned, environment-friendly and ecologically viable methods of development. Comprehensive infrastructure development at the Bekal Project site includes water supply scheme, roads, street lighting, sanitation, solid waste disposal systems, public amenities, communication systems and basic tourist facilities.

Bekal is a favourite shooting location for the film makers.

Kozhikode also known as Calicut is the third largest city in Kerala and the headquarters of Kozhikode district.

In 1498 Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed at Kappad, about 25 km away from Calicut city. Discovery of the sea route from Europe to India gave the Portuguese a significant advantage in the control of international trade that lasted for almost a century and changed the political scenario of India ultimately ending with its colonization by the British.

Kozhikode was an independent kingdom in 14th century, whose ruler was Samoothirippadu ( anglicised as Zamorin). Thus Calicut came to be called the City of Zamorins.

There are many numbers of rivers and lakes in the district. Kallayi Puzha, Chaliyar puzha, Korapuzha, Poonoor puzha, and Iravanjhi puzha are some amongst them.

Kozhikode is the most important coastal city of the north region of state of Kerala.
Kozhikode is the birth place of one of the top Malayalam dailies "Mathrubhumi".

Kappad Beach

Vasco Da Gama landed in Kappad Beach on 27th May 1498 with three vessels and 170 men. This beach of historical importance is 16 km north of Kozhikode. A monument is here to memorialize the historical landing of Vasco Da Gama. An ancient temple on a hill facing the sea is an added attraction.

Beypore

Beypore is a port city situated 10 km south of Kozhikode at the mouth of Chaliyar River. Beypore is famous for its ancient shipbuilding industry, which constructed Uru, the traditional trading vessels. The place was formerly known as Vaypura and Vadaparappanad. Tippu Sultan named the town “Sultan Pattanam”. It is one of the important ports of Kerala and naturally an important trading centre. It is the major fishing harbour of Kerala. Vadakara

This ancient place is now the headquarters of the taluk as well as the municipality of that name. There is a ruined fort in the town. Vadakara was the scene of many exploits of 'Thacholi Othenan', the hero of the ballads of north Malabar (Vadakkan Pattukal). Five km South-East of Vadakara is the Lokanarkavu (Temple) which has three rock-cut caves in its vicinity. Annual ceremonies are conducted in memory of Thacholi Othenan, whose birth place is Manikkoth near Meppayil.

Mananchira Square

Mananchira Maithan, in the heart of the city is the sublimation of the concept of a planned modern city. The historic maithan, adjacent to Manachira has been converted into an arcadia with beautiful trees and plants, artificial hill, shrubs, sculpture, an open air theatre and above all a musical fountain. Locals and tourists seekings leisure and relief from the mad rush outside find shelter here. Mananchira Maithan is managed by the Corporation of Kozhikode.

Art Gallery and Krishna Menon Museum

It is situated adjacent to the Pazhassi Raja Museum, the art gallery houses paintings of Raja Ravi Varma and other collections. The museum has a section dedicated to V.K. Krishna Menon exhibiting the personal belonging of the late leader.

Thiruvananthapuram (formerly known as Trivandrum), the largest and most populous City in Kerala, is the capital of Kerala State. Thiruvananthapuram District is situated at the southern most end of Kerala, sandwiched between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats.

Kochi (Formerly Cochin) known as the Queen of Arabian Sea, is the top metropolitan city of Kerala in Ernakulam District . Kochi was the place of first European colonial settlement in India.

Mattanchery Palace

Edakkal Cave

Edakkal Cave is an important tourist attraction, three kilometres away from Ambalavayal which is 25 kilometres from Kalpetta. Edakkal cave is in the Ambukuthy mountain.It is only a cleft about 96ft. long and 22ft wide in the rock. It is a fissure made by a corner of rock splitting off from the main body due to some natural causes. The rock wall contains some interesting carvings, which represent human and animal figures and objects of human use and symbols. These carvings speak of a highly civilized people of pre-historic age.

Muthanga Wild Life Sanctuary

Muthanga is 16 kms. east of Sulthan Bathery, is located near to Karnadaka border. Wild forests covering an area of 345 sq kms form the Muthanga wild life sanctuary, the biggest abode of wild animals in Malabar. Elephant, tiger, cheeta, spotted deer, bison wild bear, etc. are found in this sanctuary. The forest Department has facilities for providing elephant rides to tourists.

Lakkidi

The entry-point to Wayanad, about 58 kms away from Kozhikode, receives one of the highest rainfalls in India. One of the highest locations in Wayanad, Lakkidi also commands a picturesque scenery. The 12 kms.long journey from Adivaram to Lakkidi through ghat road with nine hairpin bends through thick forests is a fascinating experience.

Pookot Lake

Pookode Lake is a famous tourist centre near Lakkidi. It is a natural fresh water lake, has an area of 8.5ha and the maximum water depth is 6.5m located at three kms.south of Vythiri. There is an aquarium and a green house here. Boating facilities are also available here. Spices and handicraft items are arranged here for sale. The lake has an area of 8.5ha and the maximum water depth is 6.5mtrs.

Chembra peak, the highest hill in Wayanad near Meppady town. Trekking to the top of this hill takes almost a day. Tourists can also stay one or two days at the top of the peak in temporary camps. The scenic beauty of Wayanad, which is visible from the top of Chambra Peak is very exhilarating.

The deep rock caves, formed among the thick blocks of rocks at the northern top end of the Brahmagiri, are the abode of various birds and wild beasts. District Tourism Promotion Council arranges vehicle, guides, camping equipments, etc. for the tourists on hire.

Soochippara waterfalls, Kanthanpara waterfalls and Sentinel Rock waterfalls are waterfalls in the Meppadi - Ambalavayal region. This water falls and its surroundings are spectacular and tranquillising.

Sulthan Bathery is famous for its fort built by Tipu Sultan. The tomb of Pazhassi Raja, who fought the British with the help of Kurichiya warriors, is in Mananthavady.

Ottamthullal is a performing art of Kerala. The great malayalam poet Kunjan Nambiar created Ottamthullal as an alternative of Chakyar koothu (performing art of Kerala) and is known as poor man's Kathakali.

Ottam thullal is replete with humour, sarcasm and social criticism. The actor establishes powerful communication with spectators through verbal acting which is interspersed with humour and social references. Ottamthullal became popular because of its simplicity and it is easily understandable comparing to Kathakali for ordinary people. The stories from hindu epics are retold in simple malayalam poetry.

Ottamthullal is a solo performance. The performer will act and dance while singing thullal poems. Simple costumes similar to Kathakali and percussion instruments like Mizhav(a big drum made of copper) and cymbal are used.

Kerala kalamandalam, founded by the great poet vallathol narayana menon, intended to promote kerala arts offers course in Ottamthullal.

Mohiniyattam

Mohiniyattam is the classical dance form of Kerala, performed by women. Literarily, Mohiniyattam means the dance of enchantress. The slow, soft and graceful movements, expressions, the traditional costumes etc. of this classical dance, really enchants the spectators.

Mohiniyattam has the influences and elements from other dance forms like koothu, koodiyattam, Bharatanatyam, Kathakali etc.

In Mohiniyattam, more importance is given for gestural and facial expressions. The hand gestures used are almost same as in Kathakali.

The costumes used by Mohiniyattam artists are cream or off-white colour sari with golden borders, Gold ornaments and a traditonal hairstyle includes white colour floweres.

The song of mohiniyattam are based on carnatic music and the language used is Manipravalam (a mix of Malayalam and Sanskrit). Instruments used are veena, flute, maddalam, edakka etc.

Nelliyampathy is an amazing hill station on the western ghats mountain ranges in Palakkad district of Kerala, 60km from Palakkad town, is one of the best places for ecotourism in Kerala. The green lush forests covering the whole hill area, coffee, tea, cardamom, vegetable and orange plantations, water falls and the misty and cool climate of Nelliyampathi offering a delightful vacation for the tourists.

Nelliyampathy is situated at a height of 467 m to 1572 m above sea level. Journey to Nelliyampathy itself thrilling. There are about ten hairpin curves on the way. The road is narrow and it is recommended that one who drives the vehicle should be experienced to drive in such roads.

Pothundi Dam is one important picnic spot near, in a distance of 21 km away from Nelliyampathy. Pothundi Dam is an irrigation Dam. The speciality of this Dam is that, it is built without cement or concrete. A mixture of jaggery and quick lime is used in place of cement to construct this dam. This Dam, built in late 1800 AD is a real wonder for the new technology. Boat services are there in the reservoir of Pothundy Dam. The sight of Nelliyampathi mountains from here is quite spectacular.

Seetharkundu is one important spot of attraction in Nelliyampathy. There is a waterfall about 100m in height. It offers a fantastic sight of the valley below. We can see one-third of the entire Palakkad area from here.

Nelliyampathy is the paradise for nature lovers and trekkers. Several species of birds and animals including some rare species are found here. The tea plantation and coffee plantations of Nelliyampathy are famous.

Malampuzha is one of the important tourist places in Kerala, located in Palakkad district just 12kms away from Palakkad town. Malampuzha is situated on the lower hills of Western ghats. Other species of snakes in the park are Indian Rock Python, Trinket snake, Kraits, Monocled Cobra, Common Cobra, Spectacled Cobra, Rock pit Viper, Wolf snake and a variety of Vipers like Saw scaled viper, Humb nosed pit viper, Rock pit Viper and Russel viper. Some varieties of water snakes, American Green Iguana (Only one in Kerala) and crocodiles are also housed here.
