Certain head coaches and executives are obvious candidates to join the media once their football career is over (or on hiatus). Tony Dungy and Bill Parcells were always going to be good in front of the camera.

On the flip side, certain guys seem like they would melt if told they had to actually analyze freely in front of a camera. Parcells son-in-law Scott Pioli was always at the top of that second list, but now without a spot in the NFL he finds himself as a member of NBC Sports.

The former Kansas City Chiefs GM will contribute to NBC’s Sunday Night Football coverage and also appear on the NBC Sports Network’s “Pro Football Talk”. He will continue to serve as a contributor to Sirius XM.

For his part, Pioli acknowledged he had his shortcomings (to put in nicely) when it came to the media during his time with the New England Patriots and Chiefs.

“Evaluating in my old job the things I did well and the things I did not do well,” Pioli told SI. “I certainly believe understanding the media and what their job is was something I did not do a good job of. I thought this was a good opportunity to learn and grow, and get better in a lot of different areas.”

Someone like Pioli having what it takes to perform in front of the camera isn’t out of the question. One of his former coaches, Eric Mangini, had the same type of relationship with the media but was one of ESPN’s strongest analysts (though he didn’t get much attention due to a lack of flash) before taking a job this offseason with the San Francisco 49ers.

In order to follow in Mangini’s footsteps, Pioli will need to find a comfort level with criticizing people he worked with/for and could again in the future.

“I think there is a big difference between criticizing the performance and criticizing the performer. I am not going to be a person who criticizes people. Most of my background in the media is theoretical and academic so I have not entered the realm, but I think that is part of our obligation in the media is to try not to make it personal.”

After seeing only small parts of his thoughts on the game, it will be intriguing to watch Pioli every weekend. Both fans in Kansas City and New England know him well, but it can be argued we don’t know his personality at all.

The Kansas City Chiefs have claimed DE Austen Lane off waiver from the Jacksonville Jaguars and released DT Daniel Muir to make room on the roster.

Lane bring 17 career starts with him to Kansas City during his three-years in Jacksonville. After entering the NFL as a fifth-round pick in 2010, he racked up 64 tackles, three sacks and one forced fumble, but couldn’t make it to a fourth Jaguars training camp.

He will join a defensive line that is still looking for depth and especially pass rushers. LB Tamba Hali could be used less to get after the quarterback, but there will need to be pressure elsewhere for that to work and Lane showed that ability at Murray State where he set a school record for sacks.

Muir was the second player signed by new GM John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid. His career started as an undrafted free agent with Dorsey’s Green Bay Packers in 2007. Following one year in Green Bay, Muir moved on to the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets.

Though getting cut this early isn’t a sign you have a place with a team, Muir’s connection with Dorsey could help him get back to Kansas City if there’s an injury early in camp.

The NFL is rolling out a new security policy that will limit what fans are allowed to bring into stadiums next season. Though the league is identifying specific sized bags — and other items — that are not allowed, their statement made it clear it could include more (emphasis is mine).

“Prohibited items include, but are not limited to: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, seat cushions, luggage of any kind, computer bags and camera bags or any bag larger than the permissible size,” the league’s statement reads.

Putting nearly 80,000 people in one place always makes it prime for a wacko to try and make a statement. That means increased security is a necessity, but will also be a difficult transition for fans that are used to doing things a certain way.

It will be especially tough on fans that park far away from the stadium and don’t realize an item is illegal until they get to the gate. With kickoff moments away, do they then need to turn around a take the long trip back to their car? What if they don’t have a car to come back to?

With clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags smaller than 12″ x 6″ x 12″ (of course you can BUY team versions online now!) and one-gallon clear Ziploc bags allowed, hopefully the league helps subsidize the purchase of clear bags. This would allow teams to have something for fans that need to carry more items than will fit into bags “approximately the size of a hand”.

Chiefs President Mark Donovan said in a statement the team is trying to make Arrowhead “a safe and enjoyable environment for our fans. This new policy will enhance those efforts.

It should be noted that tailgating will not be changed in any way. These improvements will only apply to what fans can bring into the stadium.

As the families of Jovan Belcher and Kasandra Perkins battled over the custody of orphaned Zoey Belcher, there was also potentially millions of dollars at stake.

Following an announcement by Jackson County Probate Commissioner, it appears the focus will instead stay squarely where it remains: on Zoey. Both sides have dropped their petitions to serve as conservator of Jovan Belcher’s estate, agreeing to have a third party handle the finances.

Zoey Belcher is set to receive over $100,000 annually each of the next four years, then nearly $50,000 every year until the 9-month old turns 18, or 23 if she attends college

The three-day custody hearing kicked off on Tuesday with Belcher’s mother Cheryl Shepherd and Carrie Contey, a human development specialist, taking the stand.

Once this case is finally settled this week, Zoey can get the stability she deserves without the money coming her way being a detriment to her care.

The folks at The Star have a great rundown of the first day of testimony.

The darkest day for the Kansas City Chiefs last season had nothing to do with football. It was when LB Jovan Belcher murdered his girlfriend and killed himself, leaving his daughter, infant Zoey, an orphan.

Since that day in December, Zoey Belcher hasn’t placed in a single stable household as she deserves. Instead she has been the center of a custody fight that will finally head to court Tuesday in Missouri.

Jovan Belcher’s mother Cheryl Shepherd, who was in the house when the murder of Kasandra Perkins took place, had been given custody of Zoey. She is seeking to become guardian and conservator of Zoey’s estate, but is being challenged by Sophie Perkins, a cousin of Kasandra from Pflugerville, Texas.

Perkins also wants letters of guardianship and conservatorship for her parents and Angela Moore, Kasandra’s sister.

Unfortunately, it’s safe to say not everyone involved in this case is looking out for the best interests of Zoey. Instead some could see this as a chance to control the potential millions that will be going to the estate, led by a trust fund established by the Hunt family.

Zoey will also get more than $1 million under terms of the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement. The estate is set to receive over $100,000 annually over the next four years, then nearly $50,000 every year until the 9-month old turns 18, or 23 if she attends college.

Here’s hoping whatever the outcome of this custody case that Zoey will be with someone that cares for her and not just the money due to her estate.

Agnew was a teammate of Chiefs No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher at Central Michigan and first entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2011. He hung on with the Dolphins practice squad as a rookie before moving onto the Dallas Cowboys last season.

The former Chippewa made his NFL debut with the Cowboys, playing in four games without recording a tackle.

During his time at Central Michigan, Agnew appeared in 47 games and had 161 tackles, 14 passes defensed and one interception. He also was a standout on special teams with three blocked kicks.

Though he’s coming to the Chiefs later than the rest of his teammates, he spent this past week in Kansas City as part of their minicamp on a tryout basis. Agnew clearly showed enough in just a few days to earn a roster spot and a chance to turn heads in training camp.

The Kansas City Chiefs, like every team in the NFL, are bubbling with optimism right now. To a man, the players are excited about new head coach Andy Reid’s approach and are ready to go after an AFC West title.

Like his players, owner Clark Hunt feels good about the man running things on the field. But after watching one of the final practices of the offseason program Tuesday, Hunt wanted to make it clear he’s not clearing space for a trophy with his father’s name on it yet.

“I always have very high expectations,” Hunt said, “but you try to temper those expectations. We do have a new staff. We have a lot of new players. I don’t know how quickly it will come together once we get to September, but I’m very excited about what I’m seeing this spring.”

Way back in April, LB Derrick Johnson pointed out the Chiefs were reloading, not rebuilding. That’s something Hunt echoed after practice.

“I wouldn’t use the term ‘rebuilding.’”, the owner told the gathered reporters. “We came into 2013 with a lot of talented football players on the team. John Dorsey has done a great job in adding some people who I think will help us both this year and down the road.”

During a time when everyone is in first place and the talk of championships goes beyond just a handful of contenders, it’s a little curious to see Hunt already try to slow down talk of a big year. This is a team built to win now and anything short of making a run in the playoffs needs to be seen as a failure.

The star of today’s Kansas City Chiefs practice won’t be making any plays on the field, but instead will be found standing on the sidelines with head coach Andy Reid. That’s where former Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil will be today when he returns to Kansas City.

Vermeil isn’t new to Reid’s practices. He lives near Philadelphia and has made a point of seeing the new Chiefs head coach go to work up close in the past.

“I’ve been on his practice field and watched him coach,” Vermeil told The Star at the Trent Green Golf Classic. “I’ve been in meetings and watched him coach. I’m just impressed with how he does things. It’s more the old-fashioned way to coach. He works them hard and makes them better.”

Vermeil isn’t worried about the former Eagles coach having any carry over from his ugly last few years in Philadelphia.

“It’s refreshing to him. This is a great football city. Philadelphia is great, too, but it’s tough. In Philadelphia, they’re passionate and intense. In Kansas City, people are just as passionate but not quite as intense.”

If Reid’s offense can be half as exciting as the one Vermeil brought to Kansas City was, he will see plenty of passion and intensity from Chiefs fans.

The Kansas City Chiefs have gone out of their way to address fullback this offseason. In addition to trading for Anthony Sherman from the Arizona Cardinals, they drafted Braden Wilson out of Kansas State.

Those two moves made the holdovers at the position vulnerable and led to Patrick DiMarco being cut on May 2. He had played in five games for the Chiefs last season including four starts.

It took a few weeks, but the fullback is back in the NFL after signing with the Atlanta Falcons. He’ll replace the recently released Deon Goggins, an undrafted rookie that was attempting to make the switch from defensive tackle.

DiMarco has a chance to catch on in Atlanta as the backup fullback and join Tony Gonzalez as the second former Chiefs player with the Falcons.

Admit it, you have worked out in your mind what your touchdown celebration would be if you ever got a chance to score six in an NFL game. Unfortunately, most of us will never get to show off those moves.

It’s not just regular folks that have to keep their special dance to themselves. Plenty of NFL players don’t cross the goal line, but that doesn’t stop them from being prepared. So it should be no surprise that 350-pound Dontari Poe was ready to party when he returned a tipped pass for a touchdown during Wednesday’s practice.

“I dreamed about it, so I did it,” Poe said about his celebration.

Sure, it’s just practice — and Poe admitted he had a pick-six in high school — but there’s no guarantee the big man would get another chance to show his teammates what he could do. Once he corralled the pass, his eyes went right to the end zone.

“That was just my first thought,” Poe told reporters. “As soon as we came in here, they talked to us about being a defense that can score touchdowns, to be a great defense; so, it was my first thought, to just take off with it.”

Last year’s first-round pick isn’t just impressing with his dance moves. His freakish athletic ability have been enough to wow veteran Mike DeVito.

“You think it’s a DB running but then you see a 350-pound man, taking off down the field,” DeVito said about Poe. “It’s exciting to see somebody so big and so athletic and the way Dontari’s been playing, he just continues to grow. I can’t imagine anything less than the Pro Bowl for him in the future.”

Poe finished his rookie season strong, averaging nearly four tackles a game over the final four games. Included in that stretch was a season-high five against the Oakland Raiders Week 15. He wasn’t officially credited with any sacks, but he easily could have claimed at least half of a handful down the stretch.
