TripAdvisor travelers voted Ko Lanta a top destination

The 2012 TripAdvisor awards have been announced, and once again Koh Lanta is up there! The Island has been voted in 3rd place for the best beach in all of Asia, and 2nd place for the best beach in Thailand – only missing out on 1st place by a fraction to our neighbour – Koh Phi Phi Don. What’s more, Kantiang Bay has been voted one of the top three attractions in Koh Lanta!

That’s 3 years in the row Koh Lanta has been in the top 10 with TripAdvisor awards! But what with our pristine beaches, turquoise waters and untouched jungle – it’s also understandable!!! So if you’re not here now, we hope to see you here soon to enjoy Koh Lanta life with us.

Songkran Water Festival 2012

It’s going to be the year 2555 soon – no we’re not kidding! The Thai Buddhists use a lunisolar calendar, where the New Year (Songkran) is celebrated on the 13th April.

And wow do they celebrate! On 13th April, make sure you only take with you what you don’t mind getting wet as everyone will be armed with icy cold buckets of water, water pistols and talcum powder. Be prepared to get wet! With April being the hottest month of the year it’s often appreciated.

The festival originated from the idea that if you captured water after it has been poured over Buddhas for cleansing then it is blessed water. You would then pour the water on the shoulder of an elder or family member to pay respect. But over time this has now evolved into a nation wide water fight, with the festival lasting up to 1 week in some parts of the country.

Among the water fights there will of course be plenty of other activities going on around Kantiang which we will let you know about soon! So don’t forget to pack your water pistols if you’re joining us here over Songkran!

Japanese Night in Kantiang Bay!

This Monday (27th February 2012), Drunken Sailors, Nine Art Gallery and The Little Handmade Shop are collaborating to present a Japanese Night in Kantiang Bay.

There will be plenty of delicious treats including Teriyaki Salmon, Teriyaki Chicken, Miso Soup, Gyoza, Sushi and much much more starting from just 10 Thai Baht. They will also have Japanese alcohol for sale. The evening starts around 7pm, outside Nine Art Gallery (under the tamarind tree opposite 7-11), and will finish when the food runs out.

Of course, no theme would be complete without fancy dress – and there is a special prize for the best Japanese themed costume, so we look forward to seeing you there.

New Cafe/Restaurant/Bar in Kantiang

A new cafe, restaurant and bar has opened, all under one roof, in Kantiang Bay. You can’t miss the ultra chic looking Alama restaurant as you enter Kantiang Village from the North of the Island.

The cafe and restaurant on the ground floor serve a vast selection of moderately priced very tasty Thai food, along with a few Western alternatives such as pizza, pasta, and burgers. They also have a seafood BBQ. But you should remember to save a little bit of room for desert as they have great home-made ice-cream.

Upstairs in Alama is a lounge bar where you can treat yourself to a cold beer or three after a hard day on the beach! The bar area is casual-chiq.. which means it has the typical Thai-style relaxed vibe with cushions on the floor, but with the bonus of the trendy setting and the luxury of air conditioning.

The decking outside Alama is a great place for a spot of people watching as you let the day drift by. So whether you need a spot of coffee to wake you up in the morning, to eat some delicious food with friends, or to have a cheeky drink at the end of the day – it’s all on offer at the Alama!

New Year Celebrations

With Christmas now over, it’s time to put the Santa hats away and get ready to celebrate as the New Year arrives. As always, there’s plenty happening, so here’s a peak into a few of the events around Kantiang Bay.

Noon Bar & Restaurant will be kick-starting the New Years Eve celebrations with their ‘New Year Pre-Party’. The party will be from 12pm until 7pm, with DJ Whotfau putting everyone in the party mood from 2pm onwards. They will also have special offers on drinks.

Baan Lanta will be hosting the annual New Years Eve Gala Dinner. With a delicious dinner accompanied by plenty of entertainment throughout the evening – be sure to book ahead at the Baan Lanta reception to ensure a place.

Why Not Bar will be having one of their renowned parties on the beach, with live music from 2 bands – Why Not Band who play Rock & Roll and Indie music from 60′s to now; and Kun Shaun Band who play Thai Rock Music.

Aqua Bar are too having a big party. It’s called ‘Reggae till Psytrance’. They will start with a live band – Rasta Munkey Band who play, you guessed it, Reggae music! Followed by DJ M&M who will be playing Psytrance, House, Electro music into the New Year.

Wherever you go, it looks set to be a good one!

Christmas in Kantiang Bay

It’s the festive season in Kantiang Bay, and everyone here is gearing up for a white Christmas – by that we mean the beautiful white sand, of course!

There’s plenty to be excited about this year, the weather is wonderful and there is plenty going on. So, we have put together a little guide of some of the events that are happening around Kantiang Bay over Christmas…

• The annual Gala Dinner will be held at Bay Front Restaurant on 24th December from 7pm onwards. The delicious Thai buffet meal is accompanied by plenty of entertainment including traditional Thai dancing, fun games and fire shows. To make your booking you should either visit, or contact Baan Lanta Resort.

• Noon Bar & Restaurant will be hosting a ‘Scandinavian style’ Christmas Dinner on both 24th & 25th December from 5pm – 10pm. Additionally to this the A La Carte menu will be available all day both days. To book a table and a free transfer, please call +66 75 665 128.

• Top View Resort have arranged a traditional Swedish celebration. Starting at 3pm on 24th December, there will be plenty happening, including a visit from Santa, games, cartoons, a Swedish Dinner Buffet and more! Kantiang’s First Fine Art Exhibition

Kantiang bay is well known by many as the creative hub of Koh Lanta. Just take a stroll around the bay and you will easily find the locals displaying their talents.

Walking down the main street of Kantiang you will find little galleries tucked under mango trees, locals selling their handmade jewelry, clothes and accessories in or around the restaurants and bars. We have a number of talented tattoo artists who all have individual styles and can even create their own designs for you. Or have a wander around in the evening and you will often find musicians and bands playing in the bars, occasionally with a tourist or two contributing with their talents (for better or for worse!).

So considering all the creativity there is here, we are really excited to hear that one of the galleries, Nine Art Gallery, will be hosting the first ever fine art exhibition in Kantiang Bay.

The exhibition, ‘Virtue, Beauty & Truth’, by local artist Arthaniti Lapakorn, will open on 19th December and will run for ten days, finishing on 29th December at Nine Art Gallery which is opposite the 7-11 shop – look forward to seeing you there!
