From the Google ‘zipper’ Doodle it is easy to determine that the logo has something to do with clothing or with the zipper itself.

This is indeed the case and today the Google Doodle is commemorating Gideon Sundback’s achievement.

Gideon Sundback (24/04/1880 – 21/06/1954), was a Swedish-American electrical engineer. One of his most famous inventions that have stood the test of time is the ‘zipper’ which he redesigned in December 1913.

(Elias Howe, the inventor of the sewing machine, was first to receive a patent for an “Automatic Continuous Clothing Closure).

Sundback increased the number of fastening elements from four per inch to ten or eleven, introduced two facing rows of teeth that pulled into a single piece by the slider, and increased the opening for the teeth guided by the slider.

The patent for the “Separable Fastener” was issued in 1917. Gideon Sundback also created the manufacturing machine for the new device. The “S-L” or “scrapless” machine took a special Y-shaped wire and cut scoops from it, then punched the scoop dimple and nib, and clamped each scoop on a cloth tape to produce a continuous zipper chain. Within the first year of operation, Sundback’s machinery was producing a few hundred feet of fastener per day.

In the 1930s, a sales campaign began for children’s clothing featuring zippers. The campaign praised zippers for promoting self-reliance in young children by making it possible for them to dress in self-help clothing. The zipper beat the button in 1937 in the “Battle of the Fly”, after French fashion designers raved over zippers in men’s trousers. Esquire declared the zipper the “Newest Tailoring Idea for Men” and among the zippered fly’s many virtues was that it would exclude “The Possibility of Unintentional and Embarrassing Disarray.

The most recent innovation in the zipper’s design was the introduction of models that could open on both ends, as on jackets. According to Kovacs, this is where the OS will initially launch, as its reliance on HTML5 and open web standards will be a practical way to get smartphone features on low-end devices.

Mozilla has partnered with Telefónica to release the unannounced devices which, thanks to Brazilian law, will be unlocked when they go retail.

Mozilla's Boot to Gecko mobile OS is basically a Linux kernel with device drivers, and doesn't feature any additional layers of software. Jay Sullivan, vice president of products at Mozilla, recently said in an interview that the equivalent on Google's popular android OS would be that there is no Dalvik, and there is no Java machine.

"It's just the Gecko rendering engine," he said. "It's a Linux kernel and uses the same device drivers that Android uses. So if you're an OEM, you can get this thing set up in a few days, because it's using all the same drivers and stuff. All we wanted was the smallest possible kernel because we wanted the whole thing to be powered by JavaScript interfaces."

Mozilla's plan is to offer complete ownership and control of apps to the device owner. Unlike "silo" platforms that only allow the user to access their apps on a specific platform, Mozilla wants users to have the ability to access them on their smartphone, PC, tablet and more. This is where the Mozilla Marketplace comes in.

"The apps on B2G are normal HTML5 apps or sites that have been wrapped up with a little metadata information that says, 'Hey, I'm an app. Here's my icon. Here's my name,'" he said in the interview. " So what we're trying to do is make it so that users have choice and that developers can just freely develop whatever they want without worrying about stores and gatekeepers."

"We're going to have a market because people want ratings and discoverability," he added. "But what's unique about our system is that anyone can have a market for web apps, and also, you can self-publish them and the browser can help [the user] discover those web apps."

So far there's no word on when Boot to Gecko will be launched on devices in other territories. Even more, phone makers have yet to reveal the first Boot to Gecko devices that are slated to arrive in Brazil. However they're expected to be sold at feature phone prices.

Jetman “Yves Rossy” Breathtaking Fly Over The Swiss Alps

2012-04-20T23:33:00.006+03:00

Man has dreamt of flying since the rise of civilization, starting from Abbas Ibn Firnas of Andalucia (810–887 A.D.), who attempted flying using a pair of wings up till the American Wright Brothers who invented a glider biplane in the end of the 19th century.

Today this has been made possible to do individually; Swiss pilot Yves Rossy is filmed in the following video soaring the skies over the Swiss alps appearing to be fully in-control over his Jet, he’s considered to be the first man to have the performances of an airplane with only his body movements to steer, an imagination coming to life really.

The ultimate dream of flight – soaring through the air, with total freedom in all three dimensions, not within a heavy and complicated machine but with only one’s body and sensations – a dream everybody had at least once in their life.

JETMAN made it real.

The YouTube upgraded

2012-04-19T23:57:00.003+03:00

The graphical environment of the service is much improved

So far we have come to hear about the efforts being made by Google to add new functionality to Google +. Unfortunately, more and more false-review reviews are scattered with no eradication.

Google wants to find a solution to that problem, so Google has helped to fund a study at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The problem, identifying false-review review it is not easy, according to the researchers, the main difficulty is to determine the algorithm. However, the research team has menemukann possible solutions in the form of an algorithm called GSRank, where to find out the purpose behind the review is deceptive. This algorithm identifies behaviors such as the review was posted, the similarity review / rating is given, the size of the group, and of course the distance of the reviews were provided after the release of an application, because if the review is given too rapidly it is likely that the review is a fake review.

Of course, this algorithm can be used also for other markets in addition to Google's Play Store, but because the study was funded by Google, the current algorithm is only exclusive to Google. Surely with the investigation and action to eliminate false reviews-review can prevent us to be deceived and may find content that is really nice.

source

THE SOLAR SYSTEM: EXPLORE YOUR BACKYARD.

2012-04-19T21:37:00.004+03:00

The solar system in the palm of your hand!

The solar system will be closer to us than ever, as a new application provides a detailed picture of our universe.

The unemployed video game designer, Christopher Albeluhn, originally created the application «The Solar System: Explore your Backyard» to strengthen his wallet.

However, when he began to plan the implementation, the simulation took astronomical proportions.

A video with duration of six minutes, which he published in his roommate YouTube designer, brings the digital masterpiece in all its glory. You are able to go over and take a photo mentally and ask: 'Does this match?'," Mr Brierley said.

"And when you say, 'No', you keep on going and going and going."

To narrow down the search, he calculated the distance the train would have travelled using the speed of Indian trains and the time he was on the train – 14 hours. He eventually came up with a distance of 1,200km.

He drew a circle around a satellite map of Calcutta and eventually he found where his family had lived in a place called Khandwa.

"When I found it, I zoomed down and bang, it just came up," he said.

"I navigated it all the way from the waterfall where I used to play."

Mr Brierley travelled back to India. He found his family had moved on but neighbours remembered his mother and they arranged for him to see her.

He was overwhelmed to find her. Speaking about the reunion he said: "The last time I saw her she was 34 years old and a pretty lady, I had forgotten that age would get the better of her.

"But the facial structure was still there and I recognised her and I said, 'Yes, you are my mother.'

"She grabbed my hand and took me to her house. I think she was as numb as I was.

"She had a bit of trouble grasping that her son, after 25 years, had just reappeared like a ghost."

Film makers have taken an interest in Mr Brierley’s story and are considering making his story into a film.

Watch This iPhone Screen Protector Shrug Off a Hammer Blow

2012-04-19T00:25:00.003+03:00

You may never have to use your iPhone as a nutcracker, but it's good to know that Buff Labs' screen protectors will keep your iPhone's display intact if you happen to crush almonds with a hammer on it.

The secret to their Tonka-toughness is that each protector is actually composed of four layers including a "shock-absorptive cushioning layer" on top, which absorbs most of the energy from an impact, and a "shock-dispersive cushioning layer" which helps spread any remaining forces out so there's less chance they'll crack your screen. And like most screen protectors available today, it also uses a silicon adhesive layer which makes it easy to remove and re-position, and also helps to release any bubbles trapped during installation.

Buff Labs appears to be based in Japan, or South Korea, but it doesn't look like they sell the screen protectors directly from their website.
