Everyone has been there…its humid and your hair is uncontrollable. You have straight hair that won’t stay curled or curly hair that won’t stay straight. You are having a BAD HAIR DAY. But you haven’t experienced a ‘bad hair day‘ until you have walked a mile in the shoes of a Black women.

Hair is our joy and pain. We plan our lives around our hair. I have a friend who told her perspective employer that she would accept the job under the condition that she could leave work early for her standing hair appointment. We spend thousands of dollars and even more time on our hair. All in order to have what is called “good hair” or long straight, more European-looking hair.

The Search For Good Hair

That is the premise of Chris Rock’s very funny documentary, Good Hair. In his own comic style, Rock examines the cultural and economic implications of our struggle to have the long straight hair we see on TV and movies.

Do Not Touch The Hair

Please don’t ask us to go swimming, camping or anything else that will endanger ‘The Do‘. It reminds me of the scene in Something New when that cutie Simon Baker asks Sanaa Lathan to go for a nature walk. Just as he was about to kiss her, it begins to rain. In any other movie, this would be a romantic moment, but the first thing she says is, MY HAIR!!!”. Rule #1: Do not get the hair wet. One thing you have to know about most Black women is that our hair is a semi-precious thing. It takes hours to prepare and large amounts of money to maintain. Therefore it is 100% hands off!

In Good Hair, Chris Rock interviews Maya Angelou, Eve Nia Long, Raven Simone, Tracy Thoms and Kerry Washington who reveal their own hair secrets, problems and anxieties. To relax or not to relax? It that a weave or your natural hair? And why do we obsess so much about our hair?

Rock visits neighborhood beauty salons, barber shops and the famous Bonner Hair Show in Atlanta to examine that question. A lot of time is spent talking about relaxers (chemical hair straighteners) and the reasons why some women endure the problems and pain, in order to have straight hair. Shirley ‘Peppa’ Riley even reveals the origin of her famous asymmetrical hair style was the result of a bad relaxer. It’s almost funny, I mean really who hasn’t had their hair burned off by a caustic chemical before? Is it a cultural thing or do they do it just to be fashionable? Who can say? I am too lazy to get up an hour early to mess with my hair, so I go natural.

He also travels to India, the source of a large percentage of the human hair used in weaves (extensions) in the United States. Little did we know that this much sought after and expensive hair is donated as a religious sacrifice to temples by poor women all over India. Do you think they have any idea that their hair is flowing down the backs of rock stars, teachers, doctors and sales clerks in this country?

Chris Rock makes Good Hair a funny and informative documentary and I think you will enjoy it.

October… A time for fall leaves, cooler weather, Oktoberfest & beer and scary movies. Starting with Paranormal Activity and Zombieland, there is no shortage of movies to frighten you and give me bad dreams. My fellow Filmgirl Force bloggers, Action Flick Chick and Film Gurl know a lot more about zombies and vampires than me. Sorry to be such a horror movie wimp, but I prefer ‘old-school’ scary. When movies left you on the edge of your seat and made you check all the locks in the house before you took a shower. Oh, you know you do it too. I am referring to the Master of Suspense, himself: Alfred Hitchcock.

One of the wonderful things about Hitchcock, is the way he featured women in his movies. Hitchcock’s women were always stunningly beautiful blonds who got involved in mysteries, murder and mayhem, all while remaining impeccable dressed. Even the most timid of his heroines steps ups to the challenge when needed. Well wouldn’t you if you were being attacked by a flock of birds? Here are two of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock movies.

Psycho

Janet Leigh starred as Marian Crane in Psycho, one of the scariest movies ever . Ok, yes Tony Perkins was extremely creepy too. It’s a simple story. In order to run away with her lover, Sam (played by John Gavin) Marian steals $40, 000 from her boss. That may not seem like much now, but in 1960 dollars, $40, 000 was a fortune. She runs off with the money and hides out in the seedy Bates Motel, run by Norman Bates and his invalid mother. This is not really a spoiler, since we already knows what happens at the Bates Motel. Poor Marian Crane. She will forever be remembered as the woman in the shower.

As frightening as the shower scene may be, the suspense grows when Marian’s determined sister, Lila (played by Vera Miles) enlists Sam to help her find Marian, return the money and avoid a jail sentence. Lila hires a private to detective to track down her sister and he follows her trail to the Bates Motel, where he also meets a tragic end. Note to self: Don’t go snooping around creepy old houses inhabited by 30 year old men who still live with their mother.

I have seen Psycho 100 times over the years. And I was scared every time. How does Alfred Hitchcock do that? To tell you anymore would ruin the suspense and the surprise ending.

Rear Window

Rear Window stars one of my favorite classic film stars, Jimmy Stewart. He is L.B. (Jeff) Jeffries, a wheelchair bound photojournalist with a broken leg. His gorgeous super model girlfriend, Lisa Fremont is played by Grace Kelly. There is also Thelma Ritter as the smart-mouthed nurse. Sounds pretty boring right? But Hitchcock like to show the terror next door and that’s just what Jeff finds while staring out his window into the courtyard below his apartment. OK…so what if your neighbor’s dog finds a femur bone in the flower bed. Gee, I wonder why Mr. Thorwald is taking those large trunks out of his house in the middle of the night? What ever happened to Mrs. Thorwald, I haven’t seen her in days?

Grace Kelly and Jimmy Stewart in Rear Window (1954)

Is Jeff just a bored invalid with a vivid imagination or has he stumbled upon a grisly murder? He enlists his nurse and girlfriend in his amateur investigation of the missing Mrs. Thorwald. I love how Grace Kelly’s character jumps right into the center of Jeff’s case. Did she lay around his place looking gorgeous? Yes, but when the time came for action she was ready to help her man out by breaking into the suspected murder’s apartment to look for clues.

Grace Kelly is the quintessential Hitchcock women. The cool, beautiful blond. She starred in two other Hitchcock movies, To Catch A Thief with Cary Grant and Dial M For Murder.

Released: 1940
Director: George Cukor
Screenplay: Donald Ogden Stewart (based on a play by Philip Barry)

The Perfect Cast

The great Kathryn Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart. The perfect cast for my all time favorite Classic Chick Flick, The Philadelphia Story. The movie was based on a Broadway play by Philip Barry, who wrote it specifically for Miss Hepburn. On Broadway, the play starred not only Kathryn Hepburn, but Joseph Cotten, Van Heflin, Shirley Booth and Anne Baxter played the younger sister. Before becoming a big hit in the play, Hepburn had a series of flops was labled “box office poison”. But her boyfriend at the time, Howard Hughes purchased the film rights to the play gave them to her as a gift. WOW! That’s what I called a great gift.

The Plot

Enough history. The story, like so many stories of this era involves wealthy high society people. In fact, the musical remake of The Philadelphia Story (starring Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly and Fred Astaire) was called High Society. The movie starts out with a great scene with wealthy Philadelphia heiress Tracy Lord (Kathryn Hepburn) throwing out her playboy husband C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant).

A few years later, Tracy is about to be remarried to respectable, although boring George Kittredge. In 1940, this would be their version of a celebrity wedding, complete with all the media’s frenzy. The problems arise when Dexter is coerced into getting the full story on his ex-wife’s wedding. So, after being thrown out on his ear, Dexter arrives at the Lord’s home the day before the wedding with a tabloid reporter, Mike Connor (Jimmy Stewert) and a photographer Liz Imbrie (Ruth Hussey) under the guise of their being friends of the family.

That is The Philadelphia Story in nutshell. But that is not what makes this movie great. It is the interaction and chemistry between the main Hepburn, Grant and Stewart, as well as some really excellent performances by the other actors. For instance the sassy younger sister Dinah Lord, played by child star Virginia Weidler. Dinah has a great line when her mother tells her that her dress is riding up in the back. Dinah looks back at her dress and says, ” no its me that does“. And there is Roland Young as the dirty old Uncle Willy. Doesn’t everybody have one in their family? The uncle who is always mixing the drinks and pinching the girls.

Kathryn Hepburn is delightful as the spirited heiress who married Cary Grant’s C.K. Dexter Haven for love and passion, but wants to marry the ‘right‘ man this time around. She kicked him out for what is called a “deep and abiding thirst“. Now she is marrying George Kittage, man of the people. A guy who worked his way up from the so-called lower class. There was a lot of talk about classes in those days. What makes The Philadelphia Story a great romantic comedy is the quick and witty banter between Hepburn and Grant as the battling exes. The chemistry between Grant and Hepburn is wonderful. They have great comic timing. Probably from working together on other movies like Bringing Up Baby and Holiday (also directed by George Cukor). Tracy Lord could have been just another spoiled rich girl, but in Kathryn Hepburn’s hands, she shows that even a hieress has depth and substance. Which should have been easy for Miss Hepburn, since she grew up in a wealthy Connecticut family herself.

C. K. Dexter Haven: Sometimes, for your own sake, Red, I think you should’ve stuck to me longer.
Tracy Lord : I thought it was for life, but the nice judge gave me a full pardon.

Gary Grant is charming, of course. What else would you expect from Cary? But as C.K. Dexter Haven (Dext for short), he is a reformed drunk trying to earn a somewhat honest living as a journalist for a sleazy tabloid. But don’t get mad with Dext. He had good reasons for bringing tabloid reporters to his ex-wife’s wedding. Ask her philandering father. Dexter’s publisher had some incriminating photos of the father. So he is not the bad guy we thought he was.

Then there is Jimmy Stewart’s Macaulay Connor, the failed writer begrudgingly working at Spy Magazine (the sleazy tabloid). Jimmy Stewart is at his easy going best in this movie, for which he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Mac has a certain disdain for the upper classes that causes him to bump heads with Tracy at first. But eventually he comes to realize that despite her wealth, Tracy Lord is a not the snob he thinks she is.

The prettiest sight in this fine pretty world is the privileged class enjoying its privileges. –Macaulay Connor

Unsure about her upcoming wedding and a bit flustered by the sudden appearance of her ex-husband, Tracy flirts a bit with Mac. And after a bit too much (well a lot too much) champagne at her engagement party and a midnight flirtation at the pool, Tracy and Mac start tongue a-waggin’. Even little Dinah gets the wrong message. But as in most classic romantic comedies, everyone ends up with the right person at the end.

Champagne’s funny stuff. I’m used to whiskey. Whiskey is a slap on the back, and champagne’s heavy mist before my eyes.–Macaulay Connor

The Philadelphia Story is one of my all time favorites, with three of my favorite actors doing what they do best. It is a classic romantic comedy, full of witty dialogue. If you have not seen this wonderful, I encourage your to watch it. I am sure you will love it as much as I do.

You guys know I like Kung Fu movies. Come on…don’t hate. These movies actually qualify as chick flicks. Actresses like Michelle Yeoh are also martial arts experts who know how to handle sword. But why ‘just chick flicks’? I love all types of movies; science fiction, mysteries, action. I will watch almost anything, except horror.

When I think of chick flicks, I think not only about today’s quirky love stories, but about the movies that old Hollywood moguls used to call “women’s movies“. They were talking about movies that appealed to women. These movies touched my emotions, made me laugh, inspired me and sometimes, they even made me cry. They were not always love stories, but there was always a strong female lead.

Great actresses like Kathryn Hepburn, Barbara Stanwick, Bette Davis and Judy Holliday were stars who played women who could handle their business. They wanted love, but on their own terms. These movies were made in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s and they are classics. Many of these movies, like Stella Dallas and The Women have even been remade to appeal to our modern tastes, but the originals are still the best. Let’s consider these your basic education in Chick Flicks 101.

Where The Wild Things Are

Like most people, I have been looking forward to Where the Wild Things Are since I first saw the trailer months ago (after which I listened to the Arcade Fire’s song “Wake Up” on repeat for weeks). I am pleased to report that Screenwriter Dave Eggers and Director Spike Jonze do not disappoint. Where the Wild Things full-length feature film is a timeless tale of childhood acceptance, adventure, and imagination that will undoubtedly become a classic, much like Maurice Sendak’s picture book did before it.

The film is truly a work of art, composed by a number of talented individuals, including Eggers, who turned a ten-sentence children’s book into a 300-page novel (called “Wild Things”), and Spike Jonze, who co-wrote and directed the film. Jonze opted to use a handheld camera for many of the scenes, which added a convincingly adventurous feel to the Wild Things world.

For those unfamiliar with the story, it follows a young, imaginative boy, Max (ironically played by a boy named Max Records), who puts on a wolf suit, and makes mischief around his home. When his mother becomes furious with his shenanigans, she sends him to his room without dinner, where he then imagines that he is king on an island of wild creatures.

Eggers’ version elaborates on Max’s loneliness and rebellion, throwing in an older sister who is becoming “too cool” to hang out, and a divorced mother who has invited her new boyfriend into their family’s home. Max becomes angry and bites his mother (Catherine Keener), then runs away in to the night, eventually finding a boat (obviously imagined) that takes him to the Wild Things island.

The Things are all spitting images of Sendak’s drawings (Eggers and Jonze did work closely with Sendak, now 81 years old, throughout production), and they are the mastermind creation of none other than Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Even more breathtaking than the beast’s attire was the island scenery (filmed in Australia, of course) where all of the wild rumpus takes place. Upon arrival, Max convinces the Wild Things that he is their king and he will bring peace to their broken community.

At first, I wondered how these beasts could be so angry and violent, and I was a bit disappointed that they were not exactly as my youthful mind imagined. But soon I reasoned that, like the many moods of Max himself, each Thing has a distinct personality; Judith (Catherine O’Hara) is unpleasant, but in love with Ira (Forest Whitaker) who reciprocates her feelings, Douglas (Chris Cooper) is reserved, Alexander (Paul Dano) is often ignored, and Carol (James Gandolfini) has a short temper and an intense longing for attention from the motherly KW (Lauren Ambrose).

The characters are serious and heartfelt, yet they don’t lose any of their magic. Where the Wild Things will charm audiences as one of the most real and universal fantasy films they have ever seen. Kids and adults alike will relate to Max’s anger and isolation, as well as to the Wild Things all-too-common social problems.

Backed by an impeccably appropriate soundtrack (Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, along with a children’s choir), and two surprise creatures, Bob and Terry, who stole the movie for me (you’ll have to watch, then let me know if you agree!), Where the Wild Things Are is an ageless classic, not to be missed. The wild rumpus starts October 16 in theaters everywhere.

Typically, the fall and winter releases are a bit more serious and will contain more dramas. This is also the time of year that many film makers like to release their Oscar hopefuls. So let’s take a look at some of the movies due out in October.

Fall Chick Flicks

Whip It

I was really upset that I missed Drew Barrymore last week on her visit to Dallas. She was here to promote Whip It, her directorial debut. Whip It stars Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, and Kristen Wiig in a movie about a all-girl roller derby team

Set in a small town in Texas, where a misfit called Bliss Cavendar (played by Ellen Page) deals with the boredom of living in ‘smallville’ by joining an Austin roller derby team.

Motherhood

Katherine Dieckmann directs Uma Thurman and Minnie Driver in Motherhood. Uma plays a stay at home mom living in New York City. She is a mommy-blogger desperately trying to bring some balance to her life. But between the plans for her daughter’s birthday party and trying to write an essay that could land her a new job, she is a seriously overwhelmed.

The Boys Are Back

Now we have a movie about fatherhood. Clive Owen, who has played so many bad guys stars in The Boys Are Back, a witty and moving story about a sportswriter who finds himself a single father after the sudden and tragic death of his wife. His solution to the problems of parenthood–‘just say yes’. You can only imagine what adventures can ensue while raising two boys in a house with any kind of feminine influence and lack of rules.

Amelia

Mira Nair directs Academy Award winner Hilary Swank, Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor in Amelia. The movie looks at the life of aviator Amelia Earhart, who mysterious disappeared in 1937 during her history-making flight around the world. An adventure story featuring a woman. Now that’s what I call a Chick Flick. [Release date: October 23]

New York, I Love You

The previews for this one look really good and it stars some of today’s hottest young stars, like Bradley Cooper, Shia LaBeouf, Robin Wright Penn, Orlando Bloom Natalie Portman, Ethan Hawke and Christina Ricci. Talk about star-studded. New York, I Love You takes place in (do I even have to say it?) the Big Apple and tells a variety of stories about the surprising, sexy, funny and touching relationships that happen the city that never sleeps.

Make Me Laugh

A Serious Man

Directors Ethan and Joel Coen are back with another quirky movie. I am a big fan of the Coen Brothers. Raisin Arizona, O’ Brother Where Art Thou…hilarious They always make movies filled with interesting characters. This one stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind and Sari Lennick. It is a black comedy set in 1967 about a college professor with marriage problems and a lazy brother won’t move out of the house. It is bound to be funny. [Release date: October 2]

The Invention of Lying

The British comedian and creater of the popular sitcom, Ricky Gervais wrote, directs and stars in The Invention of Lying. A comedy about a world where no one tells lies (not even the little white ones). Well at least not until Gervais starts telling whoppers.

Just Plain Spooky

Zombieland

When I last saw Woody Harrelson he was pouring beers and Cheers. But it looks like he has a new profession-Zombie Killer. In Zombieland, the world overrun by zombies. A band of humans go on a cross-country pilgrimage to an amusement park where they think they’ll be safe. I am no expert on Zombies, but the Action Flick Chick really knows her Zombies. See her review of Zombieland.
