ProFootballTalk.com's and NBC's Mike Florio joined me on the show on Wednesday morning, and he touched on a range of items, from Bill Parcells to Tim Tebow to Jeff Ireland. The highlights:

Is Parcells, at 71, going to be coaching the Saints? 'At first, I thought, 'No way.' ... But, what was very telling to me was [Tuesday] after he golfed with Sean Payton. They both clammed up about this, and that tells me that something's going on. ... The fact they were quiet about it [Tuesday] tells me there's something to this. I think he would be better off as a consultant, not as a head coach, but there's something going on, and I think that they decided out on that golf course [Tuesday] that they're not going to talk about it, at least for now. ... And if he comes in as a consultant, Joe, it doesn't reset that five-year clock ... If he comes back and coaches, whenever he's done, the five years [to be eligible] for the Hall of Fame starts all over again.'

I thought Tim Tebow was pretty damned good at that New York Jets press conference. What did you think? 'He's never going to change. I don't know what people expected in the New York media. He's not going to crack, he's not going to change. Whether it's real or whether it's phony, he never steps out of that character. He is always the same guy. Now, some people may not like that kind of Buddy the Elf demeanor, but that's who he is and that's how he is. ... The guy to watch is Mark Sanchez. That's the guy to watch. Because that's the guy who is going get yanked off the field and make a face and say something."

What is your assessment of the Miami Dolphins? 'What they need to do is accept the fact that 'we are where we are and we're going to try to make the most of what we have and we're going to make good decisions going forward and we're not going to do anything that would suggest that we're panicking or we're desperate. ... We're going to get to work on getting better, not by going out and getting one big-name guy, but by making a series of smart decision aimed at providing us with a young nucleus of talent that we'll help us become competitive again.' It's almost like trying to get out of quicksand. They're flailing their arms and kicking their feet to get out of the quicksand. They need to find a rope and they need to slowly pull themselves out, and they're just not willing to do it.'

Alex Marvez, senior NFL writer for FoxSports.com, joined me on the show on Thursday morning and went over the recently completed combine and offered opinions on Dolphins-related matters:

Q: Chad Hennes is going to get paid between $4 million and $5 million a year to go in, definitely as a backup , but have the chance to compete as a starter, Seattle, Kansas City, Denver... You think the Jets are in the mix?

A: Big-time with the Jets, but again, it's cost-prohibitive at this point and that's why the Jets are looking at some other options right now. ... At least with Chad Henne, there is upside. Only four NFL seasons under his belt by 31 starts already...

Q: I agree.

A: And the thing, too, is, if he goes up to New York and plays for Tony Sparano, Tony knows his strengths, his weaknesses. It's a guy who could help the Jets in general, even help Mark Sanchez, being able to integrate themselves better with this Dolphins-style offense that Sparano wants to put in. So I think Chad Henne is the guy, the No. 1 1A option in the NFL this offseason.

Q: Do you think there is something to the idea of Peyton Manning coming down here with Reggie Wayne?

A: I do think there's something to that. ... This one gets tricky. If you're Jeff Ireland, I think you're really in a tough spot as a general manager. By the way, Joe, I have got to give Jeff a lot of props. He came on the radio with me, and I have been bashing this guy non-stop, not a huge fan of his work, but he did have the professionalism to appear with me on the radio, and I do give him a lot of props for that. That being said, if you're Jeff, and you've got the owner breathing down your neck, saying, 'What about Peyton Manning? What about Peyton Manning?' So then at that point, how do you tell the owner no, or do you go ahead and make a half-hearted effort, what is it you do?

Q: I do what the owner wants.

A: Right. So if he's in, what do you tell Mike Sherman and Joe Philbin, West Coast Offense guys, who have a very set idea of what they want, how do they go ahead and put in their type of offense? You're basically going to go ahead and say, 'All right, Peyton, you do what you want to do., and you go ahead and you set up this offense.' It may lead to taking Ryan Tannehill and No. 8 and then being able to switch eventually back to the West Coast style system. The type of quarterback that has mobility [to run the offense]. ...

Miami Dolphins great Jason Taylor joined me on the show from his charity golf outing at Grande Oaks in Davie on Monday morning. Here are a couple highlights:

Q: What do you think are the Dolphins' greatest needs?

A: Well, this is a quarterback-driven league. Obviously, you see the way offenses have changed nowadays. The abundance of points being scored and yards being thrown for, when you have three guys break [Dan] Marino's record in one year, it shows the league has changed and the direction it's going in, so quarterback is the No. 1 position obviously in football right now. With that being said, Matt Moore did a really good job last year and I thought he grew over the course of the season and got better and better. Now, do you need to upgrade that position? Probably. And I think he understands they are going to do that, but I think he's earned the right to have a chance to compete for the starting job and let it play out the way it's going to play out. I think the things he was able to accomplish last year and direct us and guide us and play some pretty good football down the stretch, I think, has earned him a chance to do that. Competition breeds excellence.

Q: I think one of the top priorities is they have to find someone who can rush the passer.

A: Yeah, Cam Wake needs help. ... You can't have enough corners and pass rushers. That's how the game is nowadays. Everybody's spread out to get five receivers out in routes. You've got to cover them down and you have to pressure that passer.

Q: Is the sack overrated? I don't think pressures or batted passes get their due.

A: Sacks are sexy. It's like in baseball: Chicks dig the long ball. Chicks did the sack. The sacks are cool. If you look at the numbers ... a team may pass the ball against you 500-600 times in a season. If you get 15 sacks out of 600 attempts, you are an All-Pro. You are the best in the league. That's how crazy it is, how difficult it is to get a sack. So, there's so much you can do to affect a game, whether it is pressuring a quarterback or knocking the ball down, forcing the ball to throw the ball quickly, or forcing the quarterback to throw it to somebody he really didn't want to because you were there too quick. There's so much that goes into the game as a pass rusher. I think Cam Wake had a really good year last year, people will say he only had eight and a half sacks. Well, don't look at the numbers. Stats are fans and stats will deceive you and lie to you a lot. People always say, you are what you are. You are what your record says you are. Or you look at the standings and defensively you are 14th against the run and first against the pass. That doesn't matter. I don't buy into all that stuff. ... I look for guys who are going to affect the game, change the game in a positive way, someone like Cam Wake. Someone like Koa Misi does that, too. He doesn't have the numbers to show, but I think they do a real good job of doing it.

Q: Importance of the right tackle, a guy that got as criticized as much was a veteran for the Dolphins last year. Where does go on your priority list?

A: Yeah, I'm not sure what Marc Colombo's going to do, is he coming back or what? Every spot on that offensive line is important. You have to protect that quarterback and give that quarterback a chance to throw the ball, and you have to open holes long enough to let your running backs hit it, and, obviously, the Dolphins have guys who will hit it. Reggie Bush played his tail off last year, and I think Daniel Thomas is going to be a pretty good one. The right tackle probably needs to be upgraded and we all understand that.

Q: Who's your MVP from last year's team? Mine was Matt Moore.

A: Probably. He played so well down the stretch. Yeah, probably Matt Moore. I know Reggie had a really good year. I think Reggie helped take some pressure off Matt at times, but Matt was dishing the ball. It wasn't always running plays with Reggie, either. It was getting Reggie out in space, it was hitting Brandon Marshall for touchdowns, and Brian Hartline had a great year, and I thought Matt Moore had a lot to do with all those guys.

Q: There are a lot of guys who have had great careers that haven't won championships, Danny, and they throw you out there first all the time when they're talking about players who haven't won it. Does the stuff bother you when you hear that?

A: It doesn't bother me as much, but there's no doubt that that's the one thing in my life and in sports, just feeling what that would be like. There's no doubt that there's sometimes I think about that, even today. When I'm watching the Super Bowl, that's going to be coming into my mind for sure. That's just part of life, man. I never had that feeling, and that's the feeling you want to have as a player as you've worked your whole life.

Ireland on QB: 'We've got to get the execution to take another jump'

Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland joined me on the show on Friday morning and addressed a number of questions:

Q: How do we upgrade this quarterback position? Do you have a game plan on it right now, or do you have to wait and see how things play out?

A: Right now, Joe, we're kind of in the preliminary stages of how we do that. Obviously, you look at every avenue that's available to you. You know, obviously, we have some in-house candidates that certainly are capable. As I said at the Senior Bowl, this quarterback position has to execute week in and week out, and we've got to get the execution to take another jump. I'm very proud of Chad Henne and certainly Matt Moore, who came in that and did a great job for us, but we've got to take that to the next level, whether that's Chad or Matt or a free agent or a draft choice, we're going to look at all avenues to upgrade.

Q: There's a perception out there about the owner, Stephen Ross. I tell people I think he really, really wants to win, and he really wants to get this thing turned around, but sometimes the way he goes about things leaves people scratching their heads. What's he been like to work with?

A: Well, there's one thing that's perception, and there's one thing that's reality. And the reality of the situation--and I work with facts and reality--is the guy wants to win in a really bad way. He's committed to winning, I think he's a great guy. I have personally spent a ton of time with him over the last five or six weeks ... the guy's committed to winning. He's certainly a successful person, a successful businessman. He likes to attribute some of the success he has had in the business world to football. He would make no bones about it: he doesn't know a lot about the game of football, but he understands the business of football very well. And he's passionate and he's committed and he's tough-minded, and I think those are great qualities when you have an owner. He wants a winner in a bad way. But, he is a young owner, he's still learning the business trade, and we're going to go about trying to teach him everything he needs to know about the game of football. But I'm excited to work with him, because you can't have a more committed owner that wants to win, and certainly is going to give us the resources to do that.

Q: Does the Carl Peterson stuff bother you?

A: It has not bothered me, to be honest with you. I mean, Carl Peterson hired me 15-16 years ago, so I have a good relationship with him. I know him personally. I know exactly what the vision is that Steve has for Carl. It's an adviser. It's someone that Steve can bounce ideas off of, a football mind that's been in the trenches before. So, he's actually been a very good advocate for Steve. I'd rather him have a football guy than some other guy who doesn't know anything about football trying give him some advice. He's given me some good advice. To be honest with you, it's been a good situation.

Q: Does the thought of drafting a 'sexy' name player such as Robert Griffin III, a difference-maker on either side of the ball--a big sack guy or stuff, does it change the way you draft or not, knowing that. Because obviously you can get a lineman or something and they can be real good for a long time but it doesn't get the fan base juiced up. Do you have to be aware of that or do you have to stay away from that?

A: Certainly, it's my job to be aware of pretty much everything, and so certainly I'm aware of it, but really, what I'm committed to do is doing the best job that I can to fill all the musts and the needs on this football team to the best of my ability. And certainly, you want explosive players, explosive playmakers, you want guys who are core-position players, you know, corner, pressure players on defense, you know, ball-hawking safeties or quarterbacks or running backs, those are all sexy positions, but they're also very important positions for a franchise to take the next level, if they're explosive. Sexy... that doesn't really come into our evaluation side of things, but explosive does.

Jason Cole: Ireland too distant, and first-rounder less and less likely to be QB

Yahoo Sports senior NFL writer Jason Cole joined me on the show on Tuesday, and I wanted to share his comments regarding Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland:

Q: Is the Miami Dolphins coaching job still a sexy job? What do people think of it?

A: It's a good job in that you can attract players down to South Florida. ... But, look, the management situation has a lot of questions out there. And this is what Jeff Fisher was talking about was, he wants to make sure the structure's in place that a head coach -- especially a guy with his kind of resume coming in -- would have more say over the situation. Now, somebody's going to take that job, and it's probably going to be a pretty qualified guy, and maybe it will work. But, that guy's going to have to deal with layers of authority, you know, whether it's Jeff Ireland, whether it's Carl Peterson, whether it's the owner, in which he's going to have to navigate his way through, getting what he thinks he needs. ... With Stephen Ross, because he is so new to it, and he's figuring his way through it and kind of fumbling his way around, nobody's quite sure how this thing operates and how it's going to go. It's the same issue that we keep coming back to: What is the structure of this team?

Q: Jeff Ireland receives so much criticism, what do you think he deserves in that regard?

A: ... The one where I have a bigger problem with Jeff Ireland is, he's become the .... he disappeared for a good seven months. He talked in April at the draft and the we didn't hear again from him...

Q: Well, he's way behind the scenes:

A: Well, that's not how you lead. I understand where there's a structure where the head coach should be the voice of the team, but you don't go completely underground. Jeff Ireland needs to learn that in order to be a leader of an organization, that doesn't mean you have to be the voice, but you have to be present and you have to answer questions every once in a while.

Q: You have to do everything you can to get one of the two quarterbacks in the draft, don't you? Or do you just say, 'It's too expensive' and move on?

A: Well, it's probably going to be too expensive, and the other problem you have is that Cleveland and Washington are ahead of you. So, all of a sudden, you start talking about three No. 1 draft picks. Like now, whoah, whoah, whoah. That's too much. But that doesn't mean you rule it out in January. ... I think you need to try everything you can to get up there. ... I would be pulling out every stop. That doesn't mean I can get it done. But they need a quarterback. They need to get it done. These 12, 13 years we're on since [Dan Marino] retired ... it's time to end it.

Columbus High star defensive back Deon Bush, who made a verbal commitment to the University of Miami recently, told me that getting a chance to play immediately was a factor: “I felt like I had an opportunity to come and try to compete for a job early and work hard for it. That’s the main thing, I just wanted the opportunity and a chance to be able to get put out there on the field early. It really impacted my decision a lot.”

Alex Marvez rips Dolphins: Jeff Fisher is 'Tony Sparano, but with a mustache'

Foxsports.com senior NFL writer Alex Marvez was on the show on Wednesday morning, and simply put, he ripped the Miami Dolphins as projecting "dishonesty" and "incompetence" in their coaching search, saying that owner Steve Ross apparently has never seen Jeff Fisher's offense play, calling Fisher "Tony Sparano with a mustache."

Q: OK, I want to ask you about Jeff Fisher, interviews with the Miami Dolphins, comes in on the helicopter...

A: What do the Miami Dolphins want in a head coach? Well, apparently the vision includes everything. Last year, the owner comes out and says, 'Hey, I want to go back to the days of Dan Marino and play exciting football.' Nobody has told Stephen Ross that Jeff Fisher does not play exciting football. 'Shhhhh! Don't tell him.' The guy's a power-running football coach. It's Tony Sparano, but with a mustache, OK? That's how it is. That's what Jeff Fisher does. But then you interview a special-teams coach in Dave Toub. What's next for the Dolphins and who's going to be doing the interviews. This is great, Carl Peterson sits in for some interviews but not other interviews. So does that mean that the ones that Carl Peterson sits in on, those are the REAL candidates, and the Dolphins are just going through the motions with the other guys? When the media finds out who Carl Peterson was sitting in with, and inevitably they will since the Dolphins can't keep a secret obviously about who's doing these interviews, well all of a sudden, are they a secondary candidate if they're hired because Carl Peterson wasn't around? Who do you answer to? Carl Peterson, or do you answer to Jeff Ireland? Who's got the real power in the organization? Great questions, right? And what are you looking for specifically in a head coach? What kind of vision of football do you have? Jeff Fisher has one vision. Dave Toub has one vision. It's not like in Jacksonville, where you're interviewing five offensive coordinators. I get it, they're going to hire an offensive coordinator. They'd love to keep Mel Tucker and his defensive staff on board. Here, the Dolphins seem to have no clue how to match up the personnel side of what they have with a head coach. It's typical Dolphins incompetence. And you know what, even if this organization, Joe, is doing a great job, and let's go ahead and, against every instinct in my body, I'm going to say the Dolphins are going to do this the right way, OK? And they're going to go ahead and get the right guy in place and turn this whole thing around. The image that they are projecting is one of incompetency and it's one of dishonesty. And that's the whole thing that really helps you lose credibility with people is when you just flat-out lie at opportunities when you don't even have to lie. Carl Peterson? Lying. Jeff Ireland in all this? We know where he stands with what happened with Tony Sparano last year. It comes across as a disingenuous organization. They have no credibility. So when you're a member of the media, you realize they have no credibility and that trickles down on your fan base that has tuned you out and led to so many great parking Sundays at whatever the name of the stadium is, since they can't get that right, either.

Q: Why can't they just come out and say Carl Peterson, whether you want to call him a consultant, a future president, a good friend who I trust, why are they trying to deny like he's got nothing to do with this.

A: Well, again, this is just how the Dolphins do business. It is so backwards, it's just so messed up. They just don't give the fan base any reason to feel confident that this organization knows what they're doing. That's the whole thing about it, it just comes across as a bunch of bumbling fools. ... This is what the Dolphins continue to do, time and time again. It falls on Mike Dee, it falls on the fact that the people don't understand media relations. They don't let Harvey Greene do his job. It's just such a mess, Joe. And I thank the lord every day that I don't have to deal with this on a daily basis like I did for eight years in South Florida.
