Um nicht nur in der digitalen Gesellschaft anzukommen, sondern sie auch mit zu prägen, müssen sich Politk und Bürger Deutschlands entscheidend verändern. Die von Newsweek jüngst festgestellte deutsche “Technophobie” muss einer technologie-freundlicheren Haltung weichen, die begreift, dass Deutschland schon längst ein Global Village ist. Für die Mehrheit der Generation Y sind geografische und nationale Grenzen obsolet, und Konzepte wie Privatsphäre lediglich ein Feature von Self-Branding und Reputationsmanagement.

Der Staat sollt sich als Impulsgeber sehen für bürgerliches Engagement, als Inkubator für Social und Political Entrepreneurship. Initiativen wie Obama’s Office for Social Innovation in den USA würden auch Deutschland gut zu Gesicht stehen, und die Nutzung von Sozial Media zur Bürgerbindung und Förderung von Sozialkapital betreibt ja sogar schon der Vatikan – nicht aber die deutsche Politik. Hier und in anderen Bereichen scheint mir die deutsche Gesellschaft weiter als die deutsche Politik, die deutlich aufholen muss.

Don’t leave it to today’s companies to solve these problems, as they will only perpetuate the same habits they have already adopted. There needs to be a new vision for the future of the web, one that is sensitive both to the human individual and the human collective, just like real life.

The internet chapter of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a secret copyright treaty whose text Obama's administration refused to disclose due to "national security" concerns, has leaked. It's bad. It says:

* That ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.

* That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.

* That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.

* Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM, even if doing so for a lawful purpose (e.g., to make a work available to disabled people; for archival preservation; because you own the copyrighted work that is locked up with DRM)

"Serial founder and investor Lukasz Gadowski constantly taps new online markets. In his latest venture, the entrepreneur from Berlin ( who is best known for his part in the success of Spreadshirt, StudiVZ, Brands4Friends and many German startups) now has plans to emulate Citizen Kane and become a major league publisher.
The European is the name of his new online publishing venture for debate and opinion. More than 20 high class journalists will be using it to cover global issues. This could end up being the European Huffington Post (at least, for Germany)."

Mich faszinieren unsichtbare Informationen um mich herum, die sich nur mit Hilfe eines Geräts sichtbar machen lassen. Wo ich nichts sehe, können Tonnen von Informationen versteckt sein. Augmented Reality bekommt in diesem Bereich gerade die meiste Aufmerksamkeit, bei der jemand Informationen in einen Raum/an ein Objekt legt und ich muss durch eine präparierte Kamera schauen, um sie zu sehen.

Neben der AR faszinieren mich persönlich fast noch mehr die Dinge um mich herum, die physikalisch da für mein Auge aber trotzdem nicht zu erkennen sind wie z.B. Funkwellen. Wie würde es unser Verhalten im Raum verändern, wenn wir all die Strahlen und Funkbereiche von Handys, WLANs und Bluetooth-Geräten sehen könnten?

Genau mit diesem Thema haben sich Jack Schulze und Timo Arnall in ihrem neuen Film nach Nearness beschäftigt, in dem sie das Funkfeld eines RFID-Lesers sichtbar gemacht haben. Ausführliche Artikel dazu bei Berg und Touch.

The products we design now are made with new stuffs. Service layers, video, animation, subscription models, customisation, interface, software, behaviours, places, radio, data, APIs and connectivity are amongst the immaterials for modern products.

Immaterials are the new substrates for opportunity and risk in product design.

Blogger-Seedings scheinen immer noch das beliebteste Mittel im offensichtlich sehr begrenzten Werkzeugkasten der “Wir machen jetzt auch dieses Social-Dings”-Agenturen zu sein. Selbst ein “Ups, ich hatte ja mal ein Blog”-Blogger wie ich bekommt fast täglich Anfragen, über irgendeinen Müll zu schreiben. Das meiste ist langweilig und wird sofort gelöscht. Manches ist so dreist scheiße, dass man eine sarkastische Mail zurück schreibt. Nur ganz selten macht sich jemand richtig Mühe, recherchiert die relevanten Blogger, schreibt eine freundliche Mail und sucht den persönlichen Kontakt. Und da so jemand heute Geburtstag hat, möchte ich ihn heute mal als Leuchtturmbeispiel zelebrieren.

Markus Albers ist inzwischen bei mir längst in der “Freund”-Kategorie unter “1.0″. Wenn immer ich in Berlin bin, versuchen wir uns auf einen Kaffee zu treffen. Er hat mich für sein neues Buch interviewt. Wir haben auch durchaus schon über gemeinsame Projekte nachgedacht.
All das hat mit einer Mail von ihm angefangen, in der er mir anbot, mir sein Buch “Morgen komm ich später rein” zu schicken. Mit seinem Thema und der Nebenbeierwähnung, dass er auch für Monocle schreibt, hatte er sofort mein Interesse. Durch den persönlichen Kontakt angeregt, habe ich das Buch sofort gelesen, rezensiert und es seitdem, wo ich nur konnte, promotet.

Das sollte auch zeigen, dass ich gerne Werbung für Produkte mache. Ausschlaggebend ist, wie oben beschrieben einfach, ob mir Produkt und die Person(en) dahinter sympathisch sind bzw. ob ich einen persönlichen Bezug herstellen kann. “Social Media” kann so einfach sein.

Bisher war ich von der High Line nur durch Vorträge und von fremden Impressionen beeindruckt. Nun war ich endlich selbst da und konnte mir das ganze vor Ort ansehen. Klares Fazit: die Aufmerksamkeit, die das Projekt eines Gartens auf einem stillgelegtem Hochgleis zwischen Meatpacking und Chelsea in Manhattan bekommt, ist mehr als berechtigt. Man merkt vor allem an den Details, wie lange die Initiatoren des Projekts mit dem Architektenteam an dem Konzept gearbeitet haben. Alles ist darauf ausgerichtet, den New Yorkern einen nahen Ort der Erholung und der Gemeinschaft zu schaffen. Und der Andrang sollte andere Stadtplanner mehr als aufmerksam machen, wie gut uns solche “Naherholungsgebiete” tun.

Ich war schon wieder in New York. Yeah. I know… Ich verdanke das Twitter. Eine alte Freundin hat vor ca. einem halben Jahr angefangen, mir zu “follown” und mochte wohl, was ich so an Links und Inhalten twitterte. Da ihre Gruppe von Social Entrepreneurs sich letztes Wochenende in New York traf, hat sich mich kurzerhand dazu eingeladen, um ein bisschen Inspiration und Feedback zu aktuellen Entwicklungen und daraus resultierenden Möglichkeiten zu geben.

Und plötzlich war ich wieder für ein paar Tage in New York und habe es genossen, mit einer ziemlich ungewöhnlichen und leicht verrückten Gruppe (zwei Britten, zwei “Southern”-Girls, ein großer, dünner Kiwi und, äh, Brad) unterwegs zu sein.

Open publication – Free publishing – More werte

Ursprünglich war es mal als einmaliges Non-Profit Konzeptmagazin zu Weihnachten geplant. Aber nachdem FROH! letztes Jahr auf so viel positive Resonanz gestoßen ist, haben sich die Herausgeber entschlossen, es auch weiterhin zu besonderen Ereignissen im Jahr herauszubringen.

Nun ist die zweite Ausgabe erschienen und kann auf der Webseite bestellt werden. Ausgehend vom 20. Jubiläum des Mauerfalls dreht sich diesmal alles um das Thema ‚Wenden‘.

FROH! nimmt den 9. November zum Anlass, um von Menschen zu erzählen, bei denen sich alles gewendet hat. Und von Orten, an denen das Wunder passiert und die Geschichte neu geschrieben wird … Die Arbeit an Wenden hat unser Redaktionsteam die letzten 5 Monate beschäftigt. Wir sind in jeder Hinsicht „froh“, dass wir auf die Unterstützung hochkarätiger Autorinnen und Autoren bzw. Gestalterinnen und Gestalter bauen konnten.

Wir sind es gewöhnt, Dinge zu berühren, um sie zu aktivieren. Von Knöpfen bis zu Touchscreens, dieses Verhaltensmuster hat sich tief in uns verwurzelt. Das lässt sich täglich an den Eingangstüren der Agentur beobachten, wo praktisch jeder seine Zugangskarte auf den Sensor tippt, obwohl ein kurzes Davorhalten in wenigen Zentimeter Entfernung auch schon genügen würde.

RF(ID) und NFC sind Technologien, die uns das Aktivieren durch Nähe statt Berührung ermöglichen und dadurch unsere gewohnten Muster hinterfragen. Mit diesem Thema haben sich Timo Arnall und Jack Schulze für Touch beschäftigt. Man fragt sich ja hin und wieder schon mal, ob hinter der Marke, die man gerade so geil findet, auch coole Leute stecken. Nicht auszudenken, wenn man z.B. feststellen würde, dass der tolle Shop um die Ecke nur ein Marketingtestlabor von C&A ist. Ein bisschen ging’s mir gerade so als Andre (@abettertomorrow) mir gerade virtuell den Link zu einem Besuch von Notcots Jean Aw bei Incase rüberreichte. Aber schon der erste Blick reicht, um sich beruhigt zurück zu lehnen. Das Incase-Büro fällt ohne Probleme in die Kategorie “Darf ich bitte morgen bei euch anfangen?”

David McCandless erstellt großartige Informationsvisualisierungen, für sein Buch (The Visual Miscellaneum: A Colorful Guide to the World’s Most Consequential Trivia) und für sein Blog (Information is Beautiful). Und da ihr Pyramiden zu eurem Medienverhalten ja zu mögen scheint, konnte ich euch diese hier nicht vorenthalten, wobei diese ja so ein bisschen in die Kategorie “Wahrheit, die weh tut” fällt. Im Februar hatte ich für das T3N-Magazin einen Artikel über “unmenschliche Lifehacks” geschrieben, in dem es darum ging, dass in der Wissensgesellschaft unser industriell geprägtes Verständnis von Produktivität nicht mehr passt. Vielmehr geht es darum, neue Rahmenbedingungen für die kreative Kopfarbeit zu schaffen, mit der die meisten von uns inzwischen ihr Geld verdienen. Der Artikel ist inzwischen auch auf der Webseite von T3N abrufbar.

Seth Godin leistet in diesem Vortrag von der Behance 99%-Konferenz in New York einen spannenden Beitrag zu dieser Suche nach neuen Mitteln und Methoden, in dem er zeigt, was für Kreative die größte Hürde zum Erfolg ist und wie man sie überwinden kann.

Ich selbst werde am 12. Oktober beim Webmontag in Frankfurt die Diskussion um die neuen Methoden anstacheln.

Sonntagmorgen im neuen Wohnzimmer, Musik aus Spotify, frischer Kaffee aus der French Press, gesättigt vom selbst gebackenen Brot und Sonnenschein durch die Balkontür. Eine hervorragende Gelegenheit, um die letzten Wochen ein bisschen Revue passieren zu lassen.

Angekommen sind wir. Aber ich bin noch dabei, den neuen Alltag zu entwickeln.

ist derzeit meine Antwort auf die ständige Frage, ob ich mich den schon eingelebt hätte. Wie vermutet hat sich der Alltag für mich mit dem Umzug nach Offenbach ziemlich umgestellt und ich bin dabei, die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten der Gestaltung auszuloten, bevor ich mich auf bestimmte Routinen festlege und andere bewusst vermeide.

So bin ich diese Woche z.B. mehr auf’m Bike unterwegs gewesen als im gesamten letzten Jahr (und wäre sogar noch deutlich mehr gefahren, wenn das Wetter mitgespielt hätte). Das Pendeln per Bike war eine der Hauptpunkte, auf die ich mich vor dem Umzug gefreut habe und bisher wurde ich kein bisschen enttäuscht.
Seit letzter Woche nenne ich dieses Baby mein eigen. Feste ~~Narben~~Nabe (bekannt als Fixed Gear) sind bei den Hipstern dieser Welt ja nach wie vor die meist gefragte Form des Bikens und auch auf mich üben sie mit ihrem extrem reduzierten Design und dem Fahrgefühl der direkten Verbindung zur Straße einen großen Reiz aus. Allerdings will Fixed fahren gelernt sein, weswegen ich mich für ein Singlespeed (freie ~~Narbe~~Nabe, nur ein Gang) entschieden habe. Ich war nicht ganz sicher, ob ich so ohne weiteres auf weitere Gänge verzichten mag, aber nach der ersten Probefahrt war sofort klar, dass ich zumindest im flachen Frankfurt mit dem einen, optimierten Gang nichts vermissen werde. Außerdem hat das Bike eine Flipflop-~~Narbe~~Nabe. D.h. sollte ich mich am Fixed Gear fahren ausprobieren wollen, muss ich einfach nur das Hinterrad umdrehen.
Mein Weg zur Arbeit geht hauptsächlich am Mainufer entlang und könnte kaum schöner sein. Je nach Uhrzeit taucht die Sonne das komplette Ufer in goldenes Licht und halb Frankfurt kommt, um den heraufziehenden Spätsommer/Herbsteinstieg zu genießen. Ein kleiner Zwischenstopp direkt am Wasser sorgt dann abends endgültig dafür, dass man den Stress des Arbeitstags hinter sich lässt. Einen Umstand, den ich wie erwähnt, die letzte zwei Jahre nicht hatte. Diese kleinen Dosen von Urlaub direkt im Alltag haben ungemeine Auswirkungen auf meine Psyche, und dabei bin ich erst zwei Wochen hier.

Die gesparte Zeit beim Pendeln geht derzeit vor allem in die Umstellung der Ernährung. Nachdem ich zwei Jahre praktisch nicht zuhause gegessen habe, gilt es nun Frühstück und Abendessen praktisch neu zu entdecken. Erste Anschaffung dafür ist ein Brotbackautomat und Daniels Brotrezept, die neue Ernährungsgrundlage. Brot kann so fantastisch sein. Gerade diese Wiederentdeckung eigentlich banaler Alltagsdinge macht derzeit ungeheuer Spaß. Als Nächstes geht’s dann ans Kochen.

Ein bisschen wehmütig war ich allerdings, als ich letzte Woche meine Bahncard100 zurückgegeben habe. Damit geht ein riesiges Stück Mobilität verloren. Sich einfach mal in den Zug setzen und Freunde z.B. in Köln besuchen ist nun nicht mehr drin. Dafür ist nun ordentlich Platz, Freunde zu beherbergen.

Auch ermöglicht die ständige Anwesenheit im Raum Frankfurt Dinge, wie z.B. abends noch beim hessischen Fernsehen vorbeizuschauen, um im hessenjournal ein kurzes Interview zum Wahlkampf im Web zu geben. Wieder zwei Minuten weg von den 15 Minuten Fame.

Ein neuer ‚Third Place‘ (der Ort neben Wohnung und Arbeit, wo man entspannt und Freunde trifft, klassischerweise ein Kaffeehaus oder eine Kneipe, je nach Gusto) ist auch gefunden. Das Försters ist ein Café und Restaurant zwei Ecken weiter mit entspannter Atmosphäre, freiem Wlan und sehr gutem Essen. So lässt es sich leben.

Der Start in Offenbach/Frankfurt macht also durchaus Spaß. Ein Umzug ist immer eine gute Gelegenheit, um unliebsame Gewohnheit abzulegen und neue zu entwickeln. Insofern dienen Artikel wie dieser vor allem auch der Selbstreflektion und Standortbestimmung. Also, nicht abschrecken lassen von zu viel Nabelschau
