JIL CALLS OFF 31ST ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION; Villanueva calls for National Day of Prayer

The Jesus Is Lord Worldwide Movement today announced it is cancelling its annual grand celebration in Luneta Park set for Oct. 4 in the wake of the massive calamity that hit most parts of Metro Manila and its neighboring areas.

Sis. Dory Villanueva, Executive Director of JIL, said in a press conference that their congregation will instead donate funds to the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.

In place of the Luneta Park celebration, which usually draws about a million followers, JIL churches all over the country and in 44 others countries, will hold a simple service in their respective churches that will focus on praying for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.

There will also be a simple thanksgiving celebration at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, where JIL was founded 31 years ago. Bro. Eddie Villanueva, founder and Spiritual Director (on leave) of JIL, will leave the thanksgiving service at 3pm on Sunday.

“The silent and loud cries of Ondoy’s victims move us all to pray. We are making this great sacrifice (of foregoing the annual grand celebration) because we believe that is the right thing to do. Jesus admonished his followers to care for the downtrodden,” Villanueva said in a press briefing at their office in Ortigas.

Ito ang mensahe ng ating Panginoon sa mga taong nag-aabot ng tulong sa higit na nangangailangan nilang kapwa.

TULONG. Kung mayroong mang isang umaalingawngaw na pagtaghoy ngayon ang minamahal nating sambayanang Pilipino, ito ay ang taimtim na pagsusumamo para sa ating sama-samang maagap at nagkaka-isang pagtulong sa lahat at bawat biktima ng nakalipas na Bagyong Ondoy.

Hindi kayang isalita ang nakapangingilabot na mga larawan ng pinsalang nilikha ng bagyong maituturing na isa sa pinakamapanganib sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas. Sa pagtaya ng National Disaster Coordinating Council, nitong Setyembre 30, umabot na sa 2.25 milyong katao ang naapektuhan ng nasabing kalamidad, 246 naman ang naitalang nasawi, di pa matiyak ang aktwal na bilang maliban sa 42 nawawala, habang tinatayang P4.7 bilyon ang napinsala sa kabuhayan at pananim.

Napakalaki ng pagsubok. Napakalaki ng pangangailangan. At napakalaki rin ng pagkakataon upang maabot natin ang bawat pamilyang halos ay panawan na ng pag-asa. Tunay na napakalaki ng oportunidad natin upang maipa-alam sa kanilang may nakaririnig sa kanilang paghihinagpis.

Sa minamahal kong mga kapatid, kamanggagawa, at tagapaglingkod ng Panginoon sa Jesus Is Lord Church, sa nakalipas na 31 taon ay napatunayan natin kung paano tayo kinalinga, minahal, iningatan, at pinagpala ng ating Diyos na matapat. Dumaan man tayo sa maraming pagsubok at dagok ng buhay, ngunit itinawid tayo ng Panginoon sa bawat imposibilidad. Dahil dito’y maaari nating patotohanan na hindi Siya nagpapabaya, hindi Siya nakakalimot, at hindi Siya malupit na Diyos.

Ending speculations following the announcement of Sen. Mar Roxas that he is backing out of the presidential race, Bro. Eddie Villanueva today announced he would stay on and continue the vision of Bangon Pilipinas.

“The only way to achieve Bangon Pilipinas’ vision of a new Philippines and platform of righteous governance is to stay on in the race,” Villanueva said in a statement.

“Bangon Pilipinas respects the decision of Senator Mar Roxas to give way to his fellow Liberal to take on the torch of the Party’s leadership for the 2010 elections. But the Liberal Party’s move does not influence Bangon Pilipinas’s own plans,” Villanueva added.

Bangon Pilipinas Party is grateful to the Philippine Daily Inquirer for its coverage of our Party and Bro. Eddie Villanueva’s renewed bid for the presidency. We trust that you will continue to find our crusade to change our country’s politics newsworthy as the campaign for the 2010 elections further unfolds.

May I respectfully call your and your editors’ attention, however, to a seeming consistent error whenever the Inquirer covers our party. As in past instances, the report “It’s official: Bro. Eddie is running again” published on the front page today, August 22, inaccurately describes Bangon Pilipinas Party as “JIL’s political party.”

The tragic deaths of 23 soldiers in Basilan last week “is clearly a criminal neglect of the AFP Commander-in-Chief — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo herself.”

So said Bro. Eddie Villanueva, leader of good governance group Bagong Pilipinas, Bagong Pilipino Movement, as he took to task the Arroyo government for the neglect of Filipino soldiers in the midst of lavish spending elsewhere.

“The blood of our soldiers are on the hands of Mrs. Arroyo and her cohorts. Amidst lavish and wasteful squandering of money, patriotic soldiers in the battlefields lose their lives for lack of needed modern weapons and gadgets,” Villanueva said in a statement.

The mammoth crowd that brought former President Cory Aquino to her final resting place Wednesday was “an indelible sign of a changing of season.”

So said Bro. Eddie Villanueva as he lauded those who braved the rains and the heat to show last respects to the former President, one of the country’s greatest pillars of democracy.

“For so many years now we Filipinos have tried to contradict the disappointingly low regard of many foreigners on us. Today, with another State of the Nation Address to be delivered in a little over 24 hours, the nation is once again led to look back to the now more than eight and a half years – 8 years, 6 months and 6 days or 3,109 days, to be exact – under the leadership of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who, with the exception of Ferdinand Marcos, has occupied the highest office of the land far longer than any other president of the country.

This, as every Filipino knows, is much more than what our hallowed Constitution would normally allow for the leader of our nation.

Madame Arroyo has had much more time and opportunity to use the tremendous powers of the Presidency to uplift the lives of 92 million Filipinos.

Regardless of what many say, it is almost sacrilegious to put all three – Bro. Eddie Villanueva, Bro. Mike Velarde, and (ex-priest) Gov. Ed Panlilio – in one category. They have, by any stretch of imagination, no significant character similarities with one another except that all three of them have been known as men of faith.

Bro. Eddie Villanueva spent his youth fighting for the rights of the poor and the oppressed. Even during his college years he already led rallies against factory owners in behalf of underpaid workers. His compassion for the poor was so much he, together with some families, was one day found challenging a hospital management and directors over their inhumane practice of withholding medical services to patients who could not give down payments or deposits.

Before being arrested by the calling that would eventually shape his non-negotiable integrity Bro. Eddie already knew what selfless service was. His incredible empathy for the poor literally endangered his life; he came under fire twice while defending the rights of oppressed workers, but he got away unscathed on those two occasions.

“When all else fails, prayer works, “ says Villanueva who adds that he has issued a directive to the more than 6,000-member churches of Intercessors for the Philippines and the Philippines for Jesus Movement to continue praying for the recovery and healing of Mrs. Aquino. Aside from this, he says that all the Jesus Is Lord Churches in the Philippines and in 44 countries worldwide will also hold a dedicated time of “Intercessory Healing Prayer” for the beloved former president in all the church services this coming Sunday.
