Robert Frechette asked:

Rings are a very popular form of jewelry! They can represent many things from culture, a commitment such as marriage, an achievement, or even a religious standard. Rings became popular during the medieval times. In those days they were made of silver, gold, copper and even iron. Jewels did not start appearing in rings until around the fourteenth century.

It was fun to learn about the history of rings. Early Christians used a Greek symbol that looks like a fish, the formal name being the Icthus, to identify themselves among other believers. I especially enjoyed the story of how the engagement ring came about. There was an Irish man from Claddagh which is a fishing village. Right before he was to be married, he was captured and became a slave working as a goldsmith. After he escaped years later, he came home to his love to find out that she had never married. They joyously reunited and he gave her a ring with the symbols of a heart, a crown and two hands. That ring is still used today to symbolize commitment of love and friendship that can never be separated. Christians call it a promise ring and wear it as a commitment to God to stay pure until marriage. Of course there is also birthstone rings which have stones to represent each month in the year. My birthday is in September so my stone is the lovely sapphire.

A ring is a significant piece of jewelry and Gilbert and Frech has one of the largest selections of gemstone rings to choose from. Our sizes range from 5 to 10. Once again, all of our rings are made from 100 percent sterling silver. We have many different designs and our artisans continue to create new ones as the fashion trends change.

It is still amazing to me know that there are so many uses for silver and that it has such a rich history. It is such a pretty color and reflects gemstones in a way that just enhances their beauty. I have so much more appreciation for my silver jewelry now and I view it as an investment. Next time you purchase a piece of silver jewelry take a few moments to reflect on this journey we have taken together. I know it will make your new piece just a little bit more special!

personalized money clips

Jarrie Wilson asked:

Silver jewelry has been around for a long time and has been enjoyed by generation after generation since as far back as 5000 B.C. According to historical investigations and reports Egyptians used silver for jewelry, ceremonial ornamentation, and for bartering and tombs have been discovered containing silver that dated back as far as 2900 B.C.

Although there are many modern technological ways to work silver today this wasn’t the case back when silver first began to be used to make jewelry. At the time the process for working jewelry involved either the use of a hammer to get the desired design and look or casting and pouring silver into the desired shape for a piece of jewelry. A third way that silver was worked into silver jewelry in ancient time was through filigree techniques. This is the process of taking thin silver and twisting it and wrapping it into intricate designs that can be held together by soldering.

All of these ways that were once used to work silver provide for a fairly rough, simple jewelry but it just goes to shoe how long individuals have been enjoying the beauty of silver and wearing it to make a fashion statement or as a sign of wealth. The beauty of the low cost precious metal has not been lost on a generation yet to date. You can find gorgeous pieces from all different points in history and from all different regions of the world.

Many Indian tribes used silver to make jewelry. Often you will see these pieces around still today; many of these pieces also have turquoise in them. Silver and turquoise go beautifully together and make for a lovely piece of jewelry. The contrast between the two colors is brilliant.

Another part of the world that is known for their use of silver is Mexico. Silver pieces made in Mexico have a wide selection of stones in them. These stones range from inexpensive coral, which is a beautiful red color, to a pricier boulder opal, which has a brilliant mixture of colors, to a simple emerald with all of its elegant beauty.

Other parts of the world that silver comes from include Peru, Chile, China, Poland, and Australia. All of these countries have been mining silver for many years with Mexico and Peru being the longest, mining silver dating back as far as 1546. And the silver that these countries mine is not only useful for jewelry but for other things as well, such as cutlery, and heat conductors.

Silver jewelry has been a profitable industry for many, many years and from all indications it appears that the inexpensive precious metal will continue to be popular in future generations too. Silver jewelry will not loose its elegance and simplicity from over years that can be worn anytime we want and for that may be compared with gold jewelry. I have a feeling that many pieces from the past will stick around to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Real Gold Cufflinks

Lovephileo asked:

Silver is a component which is acknowledged for its luminance and scintillating white color. Ever since historical period, silver has been sweepingly used in crafting beautiful and dazing jewelry and diverse versatile adorns. This is one vital rationality why sterling silver jewelry is reaping more devotees. And the twist of its low-cost and fashionable, sterling silver jewelry is breaking bully competition to gold and platinum jewelry.

Pure silver is really a weakly metal and requires to be blended with alloys for more strength and potency. Sterling silver is actually a combination of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of alloys like copper. The word sterling came forth in England in the 13th century which credibly meant ‘potent’, ‘solid’ and ‘stable’.

Sterling silver jewelry is ideal for casual use. It is impregnable enough to resist adversities of day-to-day wear. When matched with pro attire, sterling silver produces a fashion command of its own. Sterling silver earrings teamed up with a simple sterling silver necklace prepares you look classy, stylish and naturally, a straight professional.

For social function like cocktail party or political party, sterling silver jewelry helps stress your dress to bring it the sought-after elegance. Sterling silver jewelry tokens impart you the complete appearance at two-thirds the cost of gold or platinum jewelry. This is also one of the reasons why they are so popular with the young particularly teens and college-goers. Bracelets made of leather with sterling silver plates are a fad with guys. The girls fairly love the soft swinging sterling silver earrings with parti-colored gemstones. Voguish, trendy, swish, versatile and refined-sterling silver jewelry provides every style in the fashion account. If style is all about carrying your posture, sterling silver guarantees your attitude exhibited in a powerful mood and at the proper time.

Overstock Silver has a custom of excellent customer service that we will endeavor to maintain. With award-winning company service, superior silver jewelry and affordable prices, Overstock is definitely the home for fashionable and classy sterling silver jewelry.

Skull and bones Cufflinks

Melanie Spark asked:

When it comes to caring for your fine jewelry, it’s important to choose something that’s safe for your specific metal and/or gemstones. With so many jewelry cleaners and polishing cloths on the market, it can be difficult to know which is the best and safest choice. Below are instructions on caring for your treasured jewelry collection:

Sterling silver. This precious metal contains at least .925 pure silver, and is the closest look to white gold and platinum available. In order to prevent your sterling silver jewelry from tarnishing, it’s best to store your collection in a box or zip-loc jewelry bag. In addition, keeping it protected from direct light will also help to prevent tarnishing. When it comes to cleaning your sterling silver jewelry, a polishing cloth specifically designed for silver will restore your items to their original shine.

Cubic zirconia. Because cubic zirconia measures 8.5 on the scale of hardness, it’s a very durable stone. When it comes to cleaning cubic zirconia jewelry, the solution is as simple as mixing some warm water with soap. This combination will provide a sparkling look for your jewelry, and will be safe for cubic zirconia. To dry your jewelry, use a soft cloth or towel for the best results.

Gemstone jewelry. Like cubic zirconia, most gemstones can be cleaned with warm water and soap. The only exceptions are those that have been treated with oils, such as emeralds or other similar gemstones. Not all commercial jewelry cleaners are safe for your gemstones, which is why it’s important to understand how to best care for your treasured collection.

In conclusion, it’s important to care for all of your jewelry by putting it back in its box immediately after having been worn. Regardless of the metal or gemstone, it’s equally important that you put your jewelry on last thing (after applying any makeup and/or lotion) before walking out the door. Either of these can cause your jewelry to appear dull, and may also require additional cleaning to restore its shine.

Stainless Cufflinks

Rod Low asked:

Silver should be cleaned immediately after use, especially after contact with food that may cause corrosion or contain acids such as eggs, tomatoes, mayonnaise or salt. Wash in hot soapy water using a mild soap and rinse in clean hot water. Dry immediately to avoid spotting. Avoid lemon scented detergents and those containing chloride. They can be harmful to the silver.

Do not soak your silver overnight. Prolonged immersion in water may damage the metal. Washing in a dishwasher is not recommended, as the extreme temperatures may loosen hollow-handled pieces. If you do use a dishwasher, remove the pieces before the drying cycle.

How should I store my sterling silver flatware?

Your silver should be stored in an airtight silverware chest, in Tupperware, or in bags made of tarnish resistant cloth as exposure to air will accelerate tarnishing. Storing loose in drawers will cause scratching, and some woods contain acids that will stain the silver. Keep silver away from dampness and direct sunlight. Do not wrap in plastic, newspaper or foil or bind with rubber bands.

What is the best way to polish my sterling silver?

Polish with a soft cloth with any brand name silver polish, following directions. Dips are not recommended; they will remove the oxidation from intricate designs in the patterns. Never use toothpaste.

The universal fineness mark for sterling silver is “.925″ which is stamped inside the item for identification as sterling silver. Sterling silver is a beautiful metal that will last for generations with proper care.

What causes sterling silver flatware to tarnish?

Tarnish is usually caused by the contact of the sterling silver to gasses in the air and food particles.

Many people are concerned about their sterling silver tarnishing, but if you use it every day, it will actually tarnish less. Frequent use removes the need for polishing. Over time, your sterling items will develop a warm, rich tone called a “patina”. A slightly darker shading (oxidation) in the design will develop and enhance the definition of the pattern.

Caring for your flatware will take some work but it is well worth it since you have paid so much for it and its value will increase overtime should it remain in excellent condition.

Designer cufflinks

Melanie Spark asked:

Sterling silver is a precious metal that just so happens to be affordable and, for those in the know, it’s also a very versatile accessory that will look brighter than the summer sun when paired with the perfect tan. This article is designed to show you how to get the most out of your sterling silver jewelry wardrobe and enjoy a variety of looks that are sure to be timeless.

If you own an 18″ fine link sterling silver necklace, such as those commonly used as pendant chains, you can wrap it twice around your ankle for a feminine two-strand anklet design. Of course, this will only work if you can wear a 9″ anklet. If you wear a 10″ anklet, you can use a 20″ fine link necklace and wrap it twice for a perfect fit. Using this method, you have two looks in one because you can wear the chain as either a necklace or an anklet. You can use the same strategy to create a multi-strand bracelet.

Speaking of which, current trends center around multi-strand styles, but it may not always be feasible to purchase this expensive design . Instead, you can purchase a single 36″ necklace and wear it long with a pendant for a very modern look or you can wrap it around your neck twice for a two-strand 18″ design. If you can wear a 16″ length, you can pull one of the doubled strands up closer to your neck and have the look of two necklaces. With this option, many people like to wear a pendant on the shortest length. If you own a long necklace featuring loop links, consider wearing it as a belt and attaching the clasp to one of the chain’s links. The excess links will drape nicely on the hip for a trendy look.

If you want to wear a particular style of necklace but find that it’s just a little too short to wear with your chosen attire, don’t fret. If you don’t own a necklace extender, you can use a matching bracelet to increase the length of your necklace. If you own a rolo bracelet, you can use it as a custom extender by attaching the clasp of your necklace to any of the small loops in the bracelet for the perfect fit. The excess extension, if any, will drape down your back and will keep the necklace from turning around. Translation? Nobody will know about your shortcut and you won’t have to worry about the clasp finding its way to the front.

One of the hottest looks is that of a multi-strand necklace with a polished heart in the center. We all know the design and we all know the price tag that goes with it. You can get a very similar look if you own a floating heart pendant (without a bail) and two necklaces of equal length. First, take your polished heart pendant and lie it flat on a table. Take one of the necklaces and loop it through the left side of the pendant. Next, take the other necklace and loop it through the right side of the pendant. For the final step, lift the necklace and place it around your neck. Fasten the back by opening one of the clasps and attaching it in the same way you would any other necklace.

If you own a sterling silver pin that would look stunning as a pendant, try sliding a fine link necklace through the closed pin back and see how it looks. You may just find a look that you would love to ’stick’ with.
Gemisimo Ltd. asked:

HPHT Treated Diamond

History of HPHT

The history of HPHT treatments dates back to 1955, when the General Electric Company first discovered the process for creating diamonds in the laboratory. This led to the creation of HPHT process, whereby GE first created a press where the required pressure and temperature could be maintained for the process. One thing led to another and HPHT treatment evolved through various presses like the tetrahedral, BARS and finally the cubic press. What began as an experiment for diamond color modification in synthetic diamonds has today evolved into usage for natural diamonds also.

Usage of HPHT Diamond Enhancements

HPHT treatments basically serve two purposes

Creation of synthetic diamonds

Color modification in natural diamonds

Creating synthetic diamonds: To obtain synthetic diamonds, carbon is put inside a grapite capsule. A seed is then inserted into this capsule and a catalyst is added. The diamond grows on the seed while the catalyst enables the crystallization to take place.

Color modification: Different type of diamonds react differently when exposed to HPHT treatments and a range of colors are obtained. For example, diamonds containing aggragated nitrogen, when exposed to HPHT can cause it to become single substitution nitrogen. In such cases, diamonds having green, orange and yellow hues can be created. In diamonds where nitrogen is negligible, the process is often used to produce colorless diamonds. Thus brownish diamonds when HPHT processed can obtain a colorless hue. A light pink color may also be obtained in some cases. In case of diamonds with negligible nitrogen and presence of boron, HPHT can alter the color. Thus brownish diamonds will lose the brown tone and boron will make the stone bluish in color.

Popular presses used for treatment

Belt presses: This was the initial form of press used for treatment. Here pressure is created by the usage of two high strength pistons that provide equal pressure in opposing directions on a sample. A series of rings surround the sample in order to contain the pressure.

Torid press: In this method, the two pistons apply pressure in a single vertical direction.

Cubic press: This uses many pistons that provide pressure from different directions. It is also known as a tetrahedral press.

Procedure of HPHT

If a customer intends to give diamonds for this treatment, the following procedure is used,

The stone is first inspected by diamond experts for cracks, fractures etc. Stones are also subject to chemical analysis using scientific equipment. Once it is confirmed that the treatment can be undertaken, the same is informed to the customer.

Depending upon the properties of the stone, the color that may be obtained after treatment is deciphered and the customer is informed about the same.

Pressure of over 1,000,000psi is applied by placing the stone in an internal pressure medium that distributes the pressure on the entire diamond equally.

The internal pressure medium is placed into a heat generating sleeve where temperatures start at 1800 degrees centigrade.

Pricing of treatments: Cost for these treatments varies with the size of the diamond. Also the total number of stones given and additional services like repolishing are charged extra. While these treatments are expensive,

Organizations and HPHT

Because HPHT is controversial, different bodies follow different guidelines for HPHT. As per the Federal Trade commission, HPHT treated diamonds must be disclosed to the user. General Electric follows this norm and all diamonds that are HPHT treated are laser inscribed with the terms ‘HPHT PROCESSED’, IRRADIATED. If GIA notes diamonds to be HPHT treated, it also specifies them as ‘HPHT ANNEALED’ or ‘Artificially Irradiated’. Such details are displayed prominently on the grading report under ‘origin’ in the ‘color’ section of the report.

Pros and cons

The HPHT treatment of diamonds is a controversial issue because it has both advantages and disadvantages. These are further discussed as under.

Advantages

The treatment is permanent and diamonds are stable in the normal conditions of wear and care.

It can dramatically alter the color of brownish diamonds to make it more appealing. Light brown color diamonds can be rendered almost colorless using this process.

Disadvantages

The process causes surface graphitization and the diamond needs to be polished to remove it.

It is difficult to differentiate between regular natural diamonds and HPHT treated diamonds.

It can cause marginal weight loss in a diamond.

It can reduce the clarity of the stone.

Disclosure

As HPHT has become more commercially available, today there are various methods available to detect if your stone has been HPHT processed or not. At the basic level diamonds over 0.5 carat can only be HPHT treated. A trained gemologist may use equipment like the SSEF spotter and crossed polarization filter to detect the same. DiamondSure is also used to separate cape diamonds from the rest. At the next level FTIR and UVVIS spectroscopes are used and synthetic and PT treated diamonds can easily be identified ere. Besides this, renowned laboratories have many other proprietary procedures that they use to identify such diamonds.

With all sophisticated equipment it continues to be difficult to detect HPHT processed diamonds at many instances. It is thus important that you purchase diamonds from a trusted vendor online or offline. Diamonds accompanied with a certificate from a reputed laboratory like GIA also ensure that diamonds are completely natural. You could also choose signature or top of the line branded diamonds to protect yourself. Finally, if you cannot afford GIA stones, make sure to opt for a diamond that is accompanied by a certificate from a renowned laboratory.

unique enamel Cufflinks

John Diamond asked:

So, is it safe to buy diamonds online? Yes and no. It is only safe if you follow these essential and simple rules:

EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT DIAMONDS

This may sound like an obvious tip but it is very important to understand the differences between diamonds. All diamonds vary based on four characteristics that you should be aware of. They are commonly known as the 4 C’s:

Cut – Here we are talking about the proportions of the diamond as opposed to its shape. If the angle at which the diamond was cut is not perfect, the brilliancy and scintillation of the diamond won’t be optimal. For instance, if the base of the diamond is too deep, light will be absorbed inwards instead of being reflected. Think of it as the diamond’s sparkle. Usually, a diamond’s cut will be referred to as Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. We recommend that you leave out Fair and Poor and aim for Very Good or better.

Clarity – Here we are talking about the number and the size of tiny inclusions within the stone or on the surface of the stone. The diamond’s clarity is referred to as FL (Flawless), IF (Internally Flawless), VVS1 VVS2 (Very, very small inclusions), VS1 VS2 (Very small inclusions), SI1 SI2 (Small inclusions) or I1 I2 I3 P1 P2 P3 (Inclusions, visible to the naked eye). These inclusions can block the light and affect the brilliancy of the diamond. Flaws are also visible to the naked eye starting from I1. Therefore, we do not recommend that you buy anything rated lower than SI2. You should preferably aim for VS2 or higher.

Color – Diamond color is usually rated using the letters D through Z. The rating D is the best color as it represents a colorless diamond. On the contrary, the rating Z is a brownish yellow. The rule is quite simple, the closer the diamond is to colorless, the more valuable the diamond will be. We do not recommend that you buy anything worse than J. So the only acceptable choices are D, E, F, G, H, I.

Carat – Carats always refer to the weight of the diamond. Therefore, it also refers to the size of the diamond, as diamonds always have the same density. We strongly recommend that you find the size that you want in real life and then buy it online. If you buy your fiancee a .30 carat diamond and she is expecting a 1.0 carat diamond, you may get in trouble!

CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONLINE RETAILER

Only buy from a reputable online retailer that only sells certified diamonds. The most common certifications are GIA and AGS. The certificate will ensure that you are getting the 4 Cs that the vendor advertised. You can research a certain online retailer’s reputation by looking at their reviews. For Canada, http://www.redflagdeals.com/deals/main.php/ratings/retailers/ provides an excellent source of reviews. Due to possible customs charges, outlandish shipping fees and possible legal warranties, it may be better to make the purchase from a retailer that is based in your country. It is also important to confirm that the vendor offers a 100% free 30 days return policy. That is the norm for good online retailers of certified diamonds.

LAST MINUTE TIP

Finally, we always recommend making your purchase through a credit card. If you have problems with a retailer and have exhausted all possible recourses with the company, it may be possible to fall on your credit card company for assistance. For example, VISA and MasterCard both offer purchase and fraud protection for certain tiers of their credit cards. Consult your credit card issuer for actual terms of service and carefully read the insurance policies as some clauses exclude protection for jewelry.

unique enamel Cufflinks

Gemisimo Ltd. asked:

What are the imperfections affecting diamond clarity?

A perfectly clear diamond (FL) is rare and expensive from a vast number of stones just a very small percentage are flawless, a great example can be seen in our diamond price comparison engine where you can easily notice that from our huge diamond database only a dozen are flawless (FL) diamonds and their prices are 20% higher from similar VVS loose diamonds. Most diamonds have imperfections; these flaws can be present externally as blemishes or internally as inclusions within the diamond.

Inclusions can be in the form of minute spots of black, white and other colors or as colored and uncolored crystals. These are usually caused due to trace minerals in the stone from which the diamond is extracted.

Blemishes include the presence of scratches, cracks or pits on the surface of the diamond. While minute cracks may not cause any major problems, some cracks may cause the diamond to split.

Depending upon the various imperfections diamonds have, the GIA has devised various grades for determining the degree of clarity. These grades are given to diamonds based on the number of inclusions, position on the stone, composition and size. Using a magnification of 10X, diamonds are ranked with the following grades. Here are some examples from our online loose diamonds search results:

•· Flawless (FL) Diamonds

•· Internally Flawless (IF) Diamonds

•· Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1) Diamonds

•· VVS2 Diamonds

•· Very Slightly Included (VS1) Diamonds

•· VS2 Diamonds

•· Slightly Included (SI1) Diamonds

•· SI2 Diamonds

•· SI3 Diamonds

•· Included (I1) Diamonds

•· I2 Diamonds

•· I3 Diamonds

As the abbreviations explain the grading, FL comprises of flawless diamonds while IF comprises of diamonds that are flawless inside but have slight blemishes outside. VVS1 and VVS2 diamonds have minute inclusions that are difficult to detect even by experienced graders. VS1 and VS2 diamonds have minute inclusions too while SI1 and SI2 have noticeable inclusions. Finally the I1, I2 and I3 diamonds are those which have imperfections that can affect the brilliance and transparency of diamonds.

Modes for enhancing a diamond’s clarity

Today various technologies have evolved for enhancing the clarity of diamonds. One example is laser drilling where lasers are used to drill out the internal spots and acid is used to wash them out. Cracks on diamonds can also be filled easily, but the treatments are considered temporary in nature. Ask for certification and if the details state that a diamond is ‘enhanced’ then be sure to compare the price. Enhanced diamonds are treated diamonds and as a customer you have the right to ask which treatments have gone into enhancing the stone, for further info refer to our Diamond Enhancements article.

What diamonds buyers must look for!

A perfectly clear loose diamond is not only beautiful but highly expensive when buying. Moreover, in an era where synthetic diamonds are in fashion, imperfections only go on to tell that the diamond is original. While perfect clarity is not the main criteria to look for while buying diamonds, buyers must keep the following issues about diamond clarity in mind while purchasing.

Type of flaw: A large visible crack may cause the diamond to break and must be avoided. Similarly a large blemish may also cause the stone to look dull and lifeless. Consider the kind of flaw your diamond has before purchasing one. Ask for certified diamonds such as GIA certified diamonds or EGL certified diamonds.

Location of flaw: Consider where the flaw is located and how it affects the appearance of a diamond. Flaws are visible only when diamonds are put in a particular position and one must avoid that while setting the diamond in jewelry.

Size of the flaw: Look for a diamond that appears clean to normal viewing. If the flaw is of a bigger size, it would be visible to the naked eye. Trends indicate that most diamond buyers opt for stones with VS1 and VS2 grading over perfectly flawless stones.

Number of flaws: Finally if a stone has a large number of flaws, it would reduce the brilliance. Thus look for a diamond with fewer flaws so the brilliance of the diamond can be appreciated.

So before you buy a diamond go and take a look at the certificate, the drawing of the diamond will show you exactly how serious are the imperfections even if you are not a diamonds pro, you can also send us a copy of the certificate and we will do our best to explain to you about your chosen stone.

Diamonds dug out of mines surprisingly, only 20% have clarity suitable for usage in jewelry. The rest 80% diamonds are put to industrial usage. Among the 20%, many have visible inclusions and very few are flawless. How ever negative the term inclusions or flaws may sound, they do have benefits. The price difference between a flawless stone and a VS stone is enormous and thus by buying a beautiful diamond that has slight inclusions that the naked eye cannot notice you save big. If you are still unsure whether the diamond you plan to buy is a high quality one or not, experts at gemisimo are there just to guide you through a buying process.

unique enamel Cufflinks
