You wouldn’t believe how much I drool when I look at other people’s pretty stationery. I have a ton of RSS feeds in my blog reader dedicated just to showcasing the business cards and designs that amazing designers create.

So, much to my delight, my own set of new business cards came in. Please just indulge me for a minute while I share my excitement.

Here are my lovelies. They are neither glossy nor matte, but something in between. They are called silk cards, because the paper has a coating that is silky smooth and velvety.

Here’s the front.

I designed them to be minimalistic and modern—with a surprise.

When you look at the business card at the right angle in the light, you’ll find a spot UV coating that shows my name and logo embellishment. The cards are thick and substantial. The back is printed in my signature turquoise blue color.

I love how understated they are. My business cards have been through several revisions. Pretty much all of them have been a little “meh” design-wise. But these… ah… This is the first time I’ve been truly excited about my own business cards!

Squee!

I had photographed his gorgeous mom when she was still pregnant, and I’m just swooning over how I was able to continue mom’s story into baby’s story. This was perfect time to do some cute newborn poses and to record a precious and fleeting moment in time.

I got the chance to spend some time with fellow photographer and mother, Ajira of Ajira Darch Photography. We had tons of fun just hanging out at the park and letting our kids play. What a joy it is to talk to someone who shares a common passion.

It was also a treat for us to take pictures of each other and our kids. We moms (photographer and non-photographer alike) are so often behind the camera and rarely in front of the camera. It’s a shame that even though we spend so much time with our kids, there aren’t more pictures of us with the kids.

Here’s Ajira’s little boy, Chesaweh. Despite his blue eyes and blond hair, he is the spitting image of his mom. And oh, do his blue eyes sparkle! Chesaweh was putting everything in his mouth! Yum, wood!

I’m a sucker for baby lashes.

Chesaweh had gotten hurt and started crying.

This is what Ajira calls, “the lip.” Heart-breaking, isn’t it?

Mom makes it all better.

If there were just one thing that I could tell you about Ajira, it would be that she is such a compassionate woman. When we were checking out a little cafe as a pit stop, there was another mother who came rushing out with a crying baby. The woman was frazzled and upset and desperately trying to calm her baby. Ajira’s heart clearly went out to this woman, who was a complete stranger! I could see that Ajira wanted so much to reach out and help.

Here’s a serious portrait of Ajira.

In reality, most of the time was spent like this. We laughed a lot.

Thanks for hanging out with me. We must do it again soon!

I started this series to help parents take better pictures of their kids (but of course, you can apply these tips to nearly anything, not just children). There are lots of photography tutorials out there, but here, I make my tips fast, easy, and achievable with your everyday point-and-shoot camera. You are what makes a beautiful photograph, not an expensive electronic contraption!

We’re back with another One Minute Photo Tip! There are lots of photography tutorials out there, but here, I make my tips fast, easy, and achievable with your everyday point-and-shoot camera. You are what makes a beautiful photograph, not an expensive electronic contraption!

For more on this, check out the explanation in One Minute Photo Tip’s original post.

One Minute Photo Tip #2

Get Down.

No, stop dancing.

I mean get down low. Crouch. Kneel. Sit. However you do it, get your joints cracking, and get down low to your child’s view of the world. They are only about 3-4 feet tall, so you need to bring your camera down to this height. The younger your child, the lower you should go. If you have a baby, you should be lying down on the ground!

Let’s talk about a typical parent scenario. Little Jack is trying out his brand new bike that he got for his birthday or he’s suddenly doing something really cute—like cramming grapes up his nose. Quick! Dash for the camera and capture this precious moment forever!

Click! This photo was taken from the typical parent’s view.

What’s wrong with this photo?

The camera is too high up! Little Jack (actually, this is my little Nathaniel) has a really strained look on this face. He has to crook his neck to look at me. He has to squint because the bright sky is right behind me from his perspective. He also has that “say cheese” face. Everything just feels unnatural and stiff.

Now, let’s get down low to the child’s view.

This is so much better!! His expression and body have relaxed completely. His beautiful eyes have opened up. This view also completely changes the relationship we have, as viewers, to the subject. It’s no longer a dominant-to-subordinate relationship as it was when the camera was high up in the parent’s view. The emotional distance has shortened, and the photograph has become more intimate. When the viewer and the subject are in an equal relationship, the viewer can be drawn in to the depths of expression and emotion of the subject.

And isn’t that how you want to remember your child and family—as thinking, feeling people with interests, opinions, and emotions? Capture your child’s memories from his perspective of the world.

For a bonus, there are actually two more major photography “mistakes” that occurred in the first photo. Do you know what they are? If you do, tell us in a comment below. If you don’t, that’s ok! I’ll be covering them in upcoming One Minute Photo Tips! Yay!

So there you go. One more way to improve your family photography. When you want to take a picture of your child:

Get Down.

That was easy, right? Now, go out and use this tip! If this helps you, please leave a comment or join the conversation!

I’m launching a new series for my blog and newsletter that gives back to you—The One Minute Photo Tip!

When I started to think about exactly how I wanted to deliver my photography tips, I knew I wanted them to be simple and fast—for my readers and me. I’m a mom, and most of my readers are parents, too. It’s hard to add one more thing to our plates, with little ones constantly asking for another snack or asking to play. I totally get that! Family time is important. We have work to do and lives to live!

So, my tips are designed to help you improve your photography, in one minute or less. For you, that means that you can use these tips very easily on an everyday basis. You can use the point-and-shoot camera that you already have, or even your camera phone. For all the tips in this series, I’ll be using my very old, but reliable Canon G5, so I can show you the results that you can realistically expect. You do not need to buy an expensive camera or equipment.

In the end, I think this is very empowering, because this means that you are what makes a good picture. You, the thinking, feeling, artistic human being. Your camera is just an un-thinking machine.

On my end of things, I will do minimal processing/retouching of the images. Just a little contrast and brightness adjustment and a little color correction.

That’s all!

This is also designed to show you what you can realistically expect, without the benefit of professional post-processing or two hours spent at your computer.

Ok, without any further ado, here it is.

One Minute Photo Tip #1

Turn OFF your flash. OPEN your window shades.
(when you’re indoors)

The word “photography” literally means “writing with light.” To make a photograph, you need light—and plenty of it! When you are in a dark room, your eyes naturally adjust to see everything clearly. The human body is a natural miracle at doing these types of things!

A camera is not so good at doing this. A camera sensor (or film) can capture only so much light in the time it takes for the shutter to open and close. When in a dark room, the camera wants to brighten everything up by using the flash.

Flash ON

This is my son, in his natural state. Not dressed up. Sitting on the couch, with his PS3 controller . Here’s what a photo looks like when your flash is ON in a dim room. The flash removes all dimension from his face and features and throws hard shadows behind everything. Everything looks flat and two-dimensional! It’s not so pretty!

Flash OFF

How do you fix this? Look for the button that looks like a lightning bolt with an arrow at the end. It looks like this:

Turn OFF your flash. Your display or menu will look like this: Here’s what a photo looks like when your flash is OFF. Much better! My camera was able to pull in enough light from the room during this time, but when you are taking pictures in the evening indoors, it’s especially important to get up and open those shades and curtains. Open them all up as widely as you can! It only takes a second!

Flash OFF and Window Shades OPEN

Even though there was enough light in the picture above, the “Flash OFF” picture still looks a little flat and plain. So, here’s one more picture with the window blinds opened up:

Aaahhh, beautiful! My son’s face has dimension, his hair and shoulders have highlights, and his soft expression becomes the focus of the image. My son has exactly the same expression in the “flash ON” photo, but here he doesn’t have that deer-in-headlights look.

Since there was more light, my camera automatically changed the ISO to a lower number. When you have more light and shoot in a lower ISO, your pictures are less grainy. Less grain means bigger enlargements!

Before and After

Here are all three side-by-side for comparison.

That was easy, right? Now, go out and use this tip! Please leave a comment below or send feedback on whether this helps you!

Turn OFF your flash. OPEN your window shades.
(when you’re indoors)
