Android: Slacker Radio, the customizable internet radio service that’s previously landed on iPhones, offers an Android app that offers the same on-the-go streaming tunes, but with the big bonus of background music playing.

The app apparently arrives customized on the new Droid and Droid Eris phones taking their bow today, but works the same on any Android device. The “Lite” free version intersperses visual and audio ads into your stream, and allows you a limited number of “Skips” per stream. There’s a whole host of categories to listen to your music in, with a good variety across years and genres. We don’t see an option to customize your stream and determine how many favorite artists get mixed into it, or ban certain artists, as with the iPhone/iPod app, but it seems you can do that from Slacker’s web radio site. The audio streaming seemed consistent and of good audio quality, on Wi-Fi and 3G.

Slacker Radio is a free download for Android, as well as iPhones and BlackBerry devices.

Windows: The latest beta release of Google’s Chrome browser ups its dynamic page building speed by quite a bit. What users are really going to notice, however, is the built-in bookmark syncing, a feature previously available in bleeding-edge development builds.

If you grab the beta of Chrome 4, either as a version upgrade from Chrome or a new install, you’ll get an option in your “wrench” menu to synchronize bookmarks, enabled through your Google account. We’ve shown you this feature when it was an optional switch, but this feature looks to make it into the final build of Chrome’s Windows release.

Google touts Chrome’s DOM Core speeds (i.e. jQuery powers) at its blog post, continuing in the tradition of browser makers constantly changing their speed metrics. The other big change users might notice is that extensions are disabled in the latest beta build, as the developers are said to be reworking the add-on framework. If that sounds like a reasonable trade for more dynamic page speed and bookmark syncing, Chrome 4 Beta is a free download for Windows systems only.

The new iMacs, and most of their predecessors, make for a mostly cordless computing experience. Using two pieces of IKEA furniture meant for laptops and modems, one iMac fan hid the remaining wires and upped the elegance.

Gérard writes into the IKEA Hacker blog with a different use for two different LUDVIG products from the Swedish furniture giant: a laptop shelf/charging station and a router/modem wall cabinet. He used the wall cabinet to hide his wired keyboard and mouse cables beyond its edge, along with a surge protector, headphones for when he needs them, and other gear. The laptop shelf makes for a nice slide-out keyboard and mouse rest, and the iMac’s stand sits neatly on top of the router shelf at eye level. Being white, you could easily paint either piece if your dwelling space doesn’t quite match up with Apple and IKEA’s primary design aesthetic.

Yelp is fine and good when you want passionate/brutal rants (and, occasionally, raves) about any and every store. For a more focused, and likely refined, local search, try long-standing foodie site CHOW’s new restaurant guide.

CHOW, the site hosting the forums better known as Chowhound, pulls reviews and comments from its deep forum archives and articles to provide lists of the best-reviewed grub around, as well as fairly sophisticated category filtering. Tastes are personal, of course, but where CHOW might really come in handy is finding a certain cuisine in a particular city. “Where can I find good X food in Y?” is a fairly common query on the Chowhound forums, and getting those questions and answers sorted in a search is a helpful thing indeed.

Android: If you dig the idea of Motorola’s socially integrated interface but aren’t planning on rushing out to get a new phone, Asurion’s AddressBook can match up contacts with their service profiles, letting you quickly contact someone across multiple channels.

As a stand-alone contact manager and dialer, AddressBook looks a bit slicker than Android’s built-in handler, with a swipe-right-to-call feature that saves you at least a little finger-pecking. The real features, though, lie in the plug-ins you can download for the major social networks—Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, and even Amazon Wish Lists, as of this writing. Install those plug-ins from the Market and allow them to auto-connect your contacts, and you’ll be able to quickly write a Facebook message, a Twitter DM, or leave a comment on a friend’s latest Flickr or YouTube content.

The auto-matching isn’t perfect, however, especially if you’ve got the messy, double-entry Google Contacts list that seems to be the default. Luckily, you can manually undo and re-match contacts to networks, though a long-scrolling approval list would be a nice pre-matching option. The other killer option in AddressBook is business listings, which allows you to add a business you frequent or work with, and have that listing offer quick directions, business hours, and other information from YellowPages.com.

AddressBook is a novel attempt at a better contact manager for Android, and worth checking out if you’re as frequent on Facebook or Twitter as you are on SMS. It’s a free download for Android phones only.

If you’re a frequent tester or tinkerer, you know that Windows likes to “highlight” your newest installed apps and program folders in the Start Menu, and doesn’t turn it off until you take notice. Stop that with a little-known setting.

If you never thought to look in your Start Menu settings, there’s a simple toggle, located in slightly different places in XP and Vista/7, that turns off the highlighting of newly-installed programs that can be rather irritating. Both toggles are found under the “Customize” menu tucked into a button in your Start menu’s properties, which can be accessed by a right-click. Firefox: If you liked the look of Zen Habits’ Minimalist Gmail adaptation, but don’t usually roll with Greasemonkey scripts, a coder has put together a single Firefox extension that can hide header, footer, and sidebar elements for an elegant look.

After installing the extension, you’ll get a “Minimalist Gmail” menu in the upper-right corner of Gmail. Click it, and you’ll have the option to hide whatever pieces of the Gmail interface you want. They’ll still be accessible by keyboard shorcuts, of course, and the header itself (with the very important search bar) is accessible through a tiny arrow placed in the upper-left corner. The same day that GazoPa’s similar image search graduates from beta, Google upgrades its own Google Labs similar search experiment to a full-fledged Google Images feature. A “Find similar images” link under certain pictures pulls off the trick.

From a cursory few searches, Google’s own similar image search seems to perform a bit a bit more accurately when it comes to hunting down real-life images that look like other captured images. You can’t upload or draw your image basis, as with GazoPa, but then you get greater results filtering with Google as well—exact dimensions, color saturation, file type, and more.

Both sites are worth keeping bookmarked if you’re often digging around for something just a little different than what you’re working with.

A friend of mine, and many commenters here and elsewhere, had issues receiving, downloading, or simply executing the $30 “student” Windows 7 upgrade. Microsoft has admitted some issues, and now offers tools for getting your upgrade done.

Ask anyone who runs the eye-catching Plex media center on their Mac about Snow Leopard, and you might see them wince. A new update fixes that painful Apple Remote incompatibility, and also improves audio for those without 5.1 sound systems.

The most important fix in Plex 0.8.3 is the successful integration of a Candelair driver to prevent the Apple Remote from launching iTunes, FrontRow, and other apps while a user’s simply trying to navigate their Plex media center. Also worth noting, thought, is a “Mixdown Volume Boost” that makes dialogue and other audio more audible in films with 5.1 sound playing over standard stereo speakers.

There’s a few other goodies included in Plex’s latest release, including a sophisticated sleep/shutdown timer, that media center fans should check out. Plex is a free download for Mac OS X systems only.

Hitachi-powered image search site GazoPa (boy, they’re really out of web names, no?) is a fairly robust engine for finding same or similar images. Its differentiation comes in hunting similar videos, digging through Flickr, and letting you draw your search.

Yep, you can use GazoPa’s simple drawing tool to roughly outline the type of image you’re looking for, and GazoPa will use its search prowess to find, well, something akin to what you scribbled. As you can see from the test result below, it knows the basic shapes and color tones you’re going for, but we don’t have to worry about CyberNet overtaking collective human intelligence just yet.

For images you’re passing on a URL or upload for, GazoPa seems a lot more serious and useful. Hover over an image to get a good deal of info, or to perform another similar search for that picture. The Flickr integration is very useful, allowing for Creative Commons licensing filters, and video search worked for a quick Google demonstration frame I uploaded.

Google Docs has officially thrown open their data doors, allowing users to back up all their documents to whatever formats they choose and compressed into a ZIP file. It’s serious peace of mind for those concerned about the cloud.

The feature seemed to arrive very recently without any official blog post or explanation, but it seems to be working for more than just a select few testers. The only catch to using it is selecting all your files, as the Google Operating System blog explains. I frequently “hide” (or basically archive) documents I’m not using frequently, so I only had to head to the “Hidden” view in the left-hand view selector—those with more complex filing schemes should try the “All Items” view, or a wildcard asterisk search to pin down what they want.

Once you’ve selected or searched for what you want to export, you’ll have to scroll all the way down until all the documents are exposed, then hit the checkmark box to select them all. Finally, right-click somewhere in your selected docs, choose “Export,” and tell Google how to export your word, spreadsheet, and PDF files.

While you’re securing your Docs data somewhere other than on Google’s servers, take a peek at other free tools to back up online accounts—you’ll feel a bit less tethered to the whims of various server administrators and account security representatives.

Want Google’s computers to tell you which RSS feeds should be looking at in Reader, and which feed items to read first? It’s now possible, as Reader introduces a “Sort by Magic” filter and an “Explore” section with recommended feeds.

Both features are actually improvements and interface lifts to older features. The “Explore” section is nothing more than the Recommended Items list that Reader has always offered, but given its own left-hand sidebar section with green-colored icons. They also threw a “Popular” feed into Explore, letting you skim through items across the web that have been frequently read, liked, and linked, then have them delivered in an order based on “what we think you’ll like best.”

Sound cryptic, overly personal, and a tad bit 1984? Then you’ll probably want to avoid using the “Sort by Magic” option in your Feed Settings drop-down. Paranoia aside, this seems like a helpful option for those who frequently skip the folder-by-folder view and head right for their burgeoning “All Items” mega-feed.

Unlike the old “auto” ranking, this new ranking is personalized for you, and gets better with time as we learn what you like best - the more you “like” and “share” stuff, the better your magic sort will be.

The U.S. Postal Service has launched a mobile-sized version of its web site, with only the most useful links out front: package tracking, post office location, and two-way ZIP code look-up.

The site works from any mobile phone that heads to m.usps.com, though it seems sized for the Android/iPhone/Pre browser. The links leading off the page are similarly pared-down and mobile-sized, with simple text input boxes and search buttons. One request we’d make of USPS’ webmasters? Consider including location-aware post office and ZIP code searching on devices that support GPS and Wi-Fi location—that would be more than a little helpful.

Tech thinker Anil Dash gets “uncharacteristically nerdy” and breaks down the process he used to install Windows 7 in Boot Camp—and then get access to it from OS X, without rebooting, using the free virtualization software VirtualBox.

This isn’t installing Windows 7 by itself into a new VirtualBox image/appliance—it’s taking the hard disk installation made with Boot Camp and making it accessible from VirtualBox in OS X. It’s only two terminal commands on top of the standard VirtualBox setup and startup, and it’s a pretty handy tool for quickly opening a Windows 7 program you need or testing out a web site in a Windows-only browser. All platforms: Fedora’s released a bootable beta of their upcoming 12th release, “Constantine,” that speeds up system updates, makes Bluetooth an on-demand service, and optimizes CPU and graphics performance on netbooks, among other improvements.

That said, the blog that said Google was in “late stage talks” to buy Twitter claims that the Mountain View firm might try and launch a music service in the U.S., either with streaming or pay-for-download offerings from major labels. It’d be interesting to see where it fits into Google’s web strategy (and would fit nicely with what the “GDrive” is supposed to offer), and you’d have to jump beyond the evidence that major labels are hesitant to give a firm like Apple too much control over pricing and distribution—much less a giant like Google. Yesterday we heard that an unknown something from Mozilla is headed to iPhones, but Firefox’s maker is being a bit more specific about Android: A mobile browser is in the works for the open-source phone.

Om Malik details a bit more of an onstage talk held last weekend with Mozilla CEO John Lilly and VP for Mobile Jay Sullivan, the latter of whom we interviewed in August and reported that Mozilla was “looking at” Android development. Malik reports Lilly as saying that “Mozilla will release Firefox for Windows Mobile and then Android,” and hears from Sullivan that releases on devices other than Nokia’s Maemo tablets are slow coming because the mobile team has worked to get faster JavaScript and page rendering times on mobile ARM processors. As expected, add-ons, desktop synchronization, and AwesomeBar-style navigation are all expected to appear in Fennec, the code name for Mozilla’s mobile browser.

Symbian and BlackBerry fans might have to do without, however, as Sullivan has misgivings about developing for either BlackBerry’s Java-based app platform or for Symbian’s phones. On all platforms, Mozilla is also looking for wider adoption of HTML5 standards for content and multimedia, to avoid the effort and complications of developing altered browsers for each platform.

Ubuntu 9.04 disabled the semi-crucial keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, that used to force the X graphical server to restart, and made it wonky to re-enable. Luckily, Ubuntu 9.10, due out in nine days, has a single setting to restore it.

The I am a Ubuntu blog pins down a little check box, under the System->Preferences->Keyboard settings, that restores the hard-reset shortcut familiar to long-time Linux users. Head to the Layouts tab under Keyboard settings, click the “Key sequence to kill the X server” option to expand it, then check “Control + Alt + Backspace” to set it.

This might be a general change in the latest GNOME desktop software distributed across many Linux variants, so if you see a similar option in Fedora, openSUSE, or elsewhere, let us know in the comments.

Windows: Google Image Search is great at showing thumbnail results, but not so hot at making full-size originals easy to download. Free and portable app Multi Image Downloader is a two-step bulk downloader that’s really simple to use.

Multi Image Downloader can’t do its own searching, but instead asks you to copy and paste the URL address from any Google Image Search. Given that Google now lets searchers pin down exact sizes and color tendencies, it makes some sense that this tiny app wouldn’t bother to re-create its own search interface.

Once you’ve entered your search, your only other jobs are to limit how many pages of search results you want to grab from, limit file types, if necessary, and choose a download location. You will almost certainly get duplicates on searches for popular items and scenes, given the lack of filtering, but working with your images locally is a lot easier and snappier than clicking through endless page re-directs from Image Search.

Windows: Looking for a text editor that helps you write text or code and doesn’t get in your way? Sublime Text lives up to its name. It’s a white-on-black, keyboard-friendly editor chock full of powerful, but unuobtrusive, features.

Without digging into the menus, you’ll notice from the get-go that Sublime Text is fairly familiar, at least if you’re a programmer—white text on a black background, with line numbers and row/column counting in the lower left corner. Jump up to the menus, though, and you’ll find a whole lot of power user features if you want them. Macro recording, code helpers and context highlighting, savable text snippets, project organization, extensive layout tools, and more than we’ve had the time to really dig into this morning.

You could just use Sublime Text for when you need to get writing done and nothing else—it comes with distraction-free full-screen views, and only the “Mini-map” on the far left is showing when you’re typing, though that’s a fairly handy tool for skimming around your text. Realistically, though, you’ll want to take a deep dive into Sublime Text, learn its keyboard shortcuts, and dig into the features that save you time and automate the grunt work of writing.

Sublime text is free to download for trial use; a license for a single user on infinite machines, with free upgrades, is $59. There’s seemingly no limit set on the trial, but when you peek around this program, you’ll hopefully feel that the designers have earned their keep.

It hasn’t reached everyone yet, but a number of Twitter users are seeing “Lists” appear in their web view, allowing them to group together who they’re following into common groups and follow other users’ batch lists in one click.

Similar to how you might hit up a friend for their RSS feed OPML bundle (if you’re like us, anyways), Lists also allows you to indulge your narcissistic tendencies by seeing which Lists you’ve been made part of. If you head to any user’s page, you can also click their list to check out a sample feed of what their stream looks like.

The weird quirk at the moment is that you can’t add users to your own list from anywhere but your “Following” page, which requires paging through dozens of followees at a time, or from individual user profile pages.

You may get a lot of Google Docs links emailed to you, but their URLs tell you nothing about what’s inside. A new Gmail Labs feature shows you the name and a text preview of Docs files shared via Gmail.

The Docs previews, enabled by heading to your Labs beaker icon or in Settings, is in line with the YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, and Yelp preview Labs, giving you a cursory glance at what you’re being linked to. Hit “Show Preview,” and a simple text or cellular spreadsheet preview drops in beneath the attachment link.

Given that Docs is a realm less vigilantly guarded for spam, and one in which the URLs are fairly indecipherable, there are probably very few negatives to getting a reassurance that what you’re being asked to look at is really what you’re looking at—and that it’s worth your time to download or read in full.

Windows/Mac/Linux: It’s not the official beta of Firefox 3.6—that’s been put off for a week. But a “test build” of Firefox 3.6 has landed, with Windows 7 compatible taskbar thumbnails, visual tab previews, and a new rendering engine.

You can grab your early build of Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 from Mozilla’s FTP servers—select the OS and processor platform from the folder list, and grab the binary inside. There are bound to be some bugs, as you might imagine, and the actual beta is now set to launch Oct. 21, the day before Windows 7 launches.

Along with tab previews in the taskbar, you can check out visual previews of tabs when you switch through them with Ctrl+Tab. It’s not enabled by default, but as with the 3.6 alpha, you can enable them by heading to about:config in your address bar, searching for browser.ctrlTab.previews, and setting that value to “true.”

You may have noticed a few changes around Lifehacker this morning. Apart from the design tweaks here and there, this update is packed full of new ways readers can contribute to Lifehacker.

Since we opened Lifehacker to comments four years ago, our commenters have played an extremely important role in the site.

Readers add their expertise to our posts, pitch in and help both us and one another out, and have supplied tips that have led to many of our best stories. In fact, several of Lifehacker’s editors (myself included) worked their way from commenter to writer with helpful comments.

Yet we’ve mostly required that tips are sent in by email and mediated by our editors; that discussions stay on topics that we determine; and that our writers are the only ones who can initiate stories on the site. No longer.

With the launch of Lifehacker Open Forums, we’re allowing readers to post tips, tricks, photos, and video directly from a form on the front page. Readers can also initiate discussions on any topic they choose simply by including a Twitter-style hashtag in their post. Whenever you add a hashtag to a post, your post will automatically end up on that tag page. In fact, if no such tag page exists, your hashtag will create one.

So let’s say you entered #newdesign inside a comment or post. A new “forum” will be created at http://lifehacker.com/tag/newdesign that will contain your post and any other posts sharing the same hashtag. Handy, huh?

We have no idea what uses people will make of these “forums.” But we suspect that many of them will be mischievous. And that’s fine—the open forums are where readers can talk about whatever they want.

Readers can now:

Post tips tricks, photos, and video clips directly to the site—whenever you choose, not when we decide to post on a topic. If you’ve got something to say that’s not on-topic with a post, you can just create your own hashtag and get talking. Create “forums” where you can chatEven if you don’t want to Last, you can still respond to any post or to another comment—in fact it’s easier than ever to keep track of those discussions: our new system now alerts you to responses to your comments at the top of the page. (You can still use Tawker to get reply notifications by email if you prefer.)

With flu viruses, swine and otherwise, heading everywhere this winter, tidying up your house is a strong defense against the spread of disease. This Old House offers a few tactics for keeping your house from becoming a carrier.

The veritable home improvement site suggests a few highly-trafficked, germ-catching areas, like television remotes and desk surfaces, to clean regularly. But the items you clean with, like hand sponges, mops, and rags, should themselves be cleaned up to prevent spreading, according to Charles Gerba, author of The Germ Freak’s Guide to Outwitting Colds and Flu:

Beware of dust rags, dishrags, mops and other cleaning tools. Unless sanitized between uses, they only spread around the germs you are trying to kill. “It’s a free ride for the virus,” says Gerba. Some of the cleanest houses he’s tested had the highest germ counts. And get this: a few untidy bachelor pads tested very low for germs, which he attributes to lazy housekeeping. “They don’t move anything around, everything is in the sink or the garbage.”

Allergy Consumer Review recommends color-coding mops, or at least their handles, for different areas of the house, and dunking the heads in sanitizing solution for 15-20 minutes after each use. And we always recommend disinfecting sponges in the microwave—but only when they’re wet, unless you enjoy making the evening news.

Firefox: Google Wave probably isn’t part of your day-to-day routine yet, but it might help to know when new waves are waiting for you. Google Wave Notifier does exactly that, checking for unread wave messages on an interval you prefer.

Chad Smith, author of the similarly helpful Google Voice Notifier, patched together this 0.0.1 Firefox extension from a rewrite of his Voice add-on, so there are definitely a few kinks to work out, especially if you use a Firefox apart from the mainstream build. Smith’s Google Wave Add-On (as it’s technically, generically titled) does exactly what it promises, though—stores your login credentials, checks for messages every X minutes, as you specify, and puts a number in your status bar if you’ve got unread waves. You can jump to Google Wave from a right-click—though it probably should take you there with just a single, standard click.
