Jonathon Hill-Jacquard at the Nightlight

I spent some time last week helping a friend get ready for a show hanging at the Nightlight for the month of March. You can see some of his work at his website hill-jacquard.com, however, if you’re in Portland try to swing by the Nightlight to see the work first hand.

I really like the direction he’s taking the work too. As Jonathon put it “we’re no master carpenters”, which is true, but I think we made some pretty decent frames for some pretty stellar art. You want to see the final product? I might remember to take the camera once it’s up, of course you could go see all of his work yourself!

Ride Oregon

I came for the content, I stayed because of the design.

I don’t know, maybe it’s because there’s a pseudo bike enthusiast inside this web designer, but something about this site really made me go “wow, this is great”. It’s nothing amazingly inventive, but it’s well done, from both the general user and a designer standpoint. It flaunts integration of intuitive ajax interaction, customized google maps api, and clean typography integration (see still a web geek).

It’s part of the whole, “Oregon is great, be a tourist of an awesome state” shpeel. But also, if you’re part of the bike scene, consider this as one of your resources, or at least a cool reference for web design.

Office Design Gallery: Pretty pretty offices

Ok, this site kind of makes me jealous.

It’s a blog showcasing design agencies’ workspace. They feature various size businesses ranging from huge New York flats to almost freelancer apartments. I know I’m just one (poor) dude without my own design agency that has to keep up a visual image like these guys, but I wantz! It’s something about the mixture of professional aesthetic, high quality, and creativity. Agencies each have their own style, but in general, they create a space of sweet eye candy that quite frankly, makes me a bit envious.

Wow. This is pretty amazing. It deserves full screen, (go to vimeo for HD if your computer can take it).

What is it? Well, it’s a work of art by one man. I guess it’s a comment of photography and architecture. Created almost entirely with CG (you won’t really believe it until like 10 minutes in when physics start to bend). My description of it? Freaking beautiful.

The League of Moveable Type

Here’s a quick design/web geek link worth checking out. If you’ve spent anytime creating the web, or been around someone who is, you’ve probably had discussions about fonts on the web. Typography has always been a major point of differentiation between print and web design. In print, any of the worlds thousands of fonts (maybe millions if you count the multitudes of home-made fonts) you can get your hands on can go into your work. On the web, you’re limited, no, I mean limited. We’re talking less than 10 “web safe” fonts. You want something more than that? you have to resort to images, or clunky work around technologies.

We’re on the cusp of a new era for web fonts though. The future of web programming is starting to include ways to include any pretty, custom font you want to use on your website. What’s the problem now? Legality. Putting things on the web means other people can get to it, the creators of most fonts aren’t so big on that. It’s a growing battle that is mirroring many past battles (such as the record industry trying to control music sharing). We’ll see where that goes. But for now, you got to watch what fonts you use. The League of Moveable Type is a cool site of free, open source fonts that don’t come with any strings, there’s only a handful of fonts, but they’re pretty top quality!

Long in the making, but dare I say… Worth it

First, sorry I’ve been lagging on the posting, my ‘idea box’ has actually been growing, I just haven’t gotten to actually completing posts lately. And here’s one of the reasons for that! We have launched the new Kinesis website. We had our previous website for at least 5 years (eons in website years) and all agreed Kinesis needed to put the time in for an upgrade.

Feel free to let me know your thoughts, and it doesn’t have to be all positive, anything just not jiving with ya’ is fine. You also could send comments over to Kinesis directly, I see those too
