Had an impulse idea, so I figure I would post it here in the spirit of this Experiments section.

The idea is overlapping letterform of the alphabet, A to Z, reduce the opacity of each one, and see what comes out.

Theoretically, I thought that reducing the opacity of each letter to 1/26th of 100%, the area where all letterforms overlap would create a 100% black. But that didn’t happen, not even close. (See first image) That’s why I bumped the opacity to 10%. (See second image)

Here are what only A and B look like with 4% and 100% opacity, and the bottom right is all letterforms at 100% opacity.

Except for the tail of the Q, you can almost get a symmetry from the “blob.”

Do this twenty-four more times and you get twenty-six sets of letters (including “PUZZLE”). Change one letter in each set, rearrange them to get an English word.

What is this English word?

Take the names of the American version of the seven colors of the rainbow, in the order that they’re often described. Rearrange the names of the colors into a particular order so that you can take one letter from each color/name to spell out “RAINBOW”. Then, using this new order, take one letter from each color-word to assemble two words that have relatively opposite meaning.

Hints

The two words express emotions.

The first word can be experienced on the road.

The second word can be used online.

This isn’t really a hint, but it’s where I got the idea for this puzzle. It’s from the Sunday Puzzle on NPR with Will Shortz. See the “Next Week’s Challenge” on this page.

No pretending at all that this is an original design. The original design read “John& Paul& Ringo& George” and was created by Experimental Jetset. Since then, there had been many imitations, with the names of members of different bands.

In any case, someone needs to make a shirt like this. A quick search online resulted in no such shirt, which was surprising, since the original was so beautifully simply designed and has appeared in the Helvetica documentary.

Here’s black on white:

The kerning with this design is a bit off to me. It’s just not as clean as the original Beatles version. I had to do some type modification, especially with some descenders.

I feel like only a real amateur designer would do this following design, because it’s too easy and it just loses the original Beatles design quality.

CMYK on gray to bring out the CMY’s.
