If you want a good podcasting setup for 2 mics then you should have a look at the M Audio Fast Track Pro. I started using one of these about a month ago on a podcast and it`s a star! The M Audio Fast Track,a MacBook, and the included GarageBand from Apple are a great combonation! That and some $25 dollar Sony Mics. We haven`t really tested anything else on the unit but if it works as good as the podcasting does…..Its a WIN WIN!!

The set up is a breeze:

Plug in Fast Track Pro to the MacBook via USB

Plug in the mic(s)

Make sure GarageBand is using it in the preferences

Set each might to a left and right mono channel

Check your levels with a few tests

Start recording the podcast

Once you figure out the best levels it`s a done deal!!

Leo and the team over at TWIT have just raised the bar a little higher for the independent producer!! Colleen has created a monster, and it’s called the Skypesaurus!!!. What is the Skypesaurus you might ask? Well it’s 4 computers combined to make the ultimate set up for a multi-person Skype session.

Why do you need 4 computers you might ask? Well Skype only allows one instance per computer so to get around this you have to use more than one computer. Skype is also a memory hog so in order to have it optomized it’s better to have it running with it’s only CPU and memory. This is why Colleen came up with the idea. If you look at the picture above you can see that TWIT know has a way to show 4 guests on the show. No mere mortal can make a Skypesaurus and get it to work. It takes lots of planning, thinking, and a mixer to feed in all the audio.

For the full story head over to Leo’s Blog and of course check it out in action on TWIT LIVE.
If you are going to be doing an IPTVshow or podcast then chances are you will want to show your desktop on the stream every once in a while. For Mac users this is very easy! The program of choice that all the show producers are using is called Cam Twist.

Cam Twist allows you to either show the full desktop or do a PIP (Picture In Picture) type broadcast with either the camera view or the desktop in the PIP window. It’s a very easy application to use and there are endless setups you can make, and then save. For example you can have a flickr slide show, an iTunes playlist, an IRC channel, scrolling text, and of couse all the animated things like snow and fire. The best thing about this application is that it is free, as in Free Beer!!
To use CamTwist with your favorite streaming provider (See Helpful Links below) you must have it installed and start it before launching the stream. Then CamTwist becomes one of your camera options. Select CamTwist as your camera and from there make all the selections you want in the CamTwist application. That’s it!! Now just mess around with the app and find what suites you best.

Jason Calacanis of Mahalo is starting a new podcast this week with a cohost about startups. It will be an audio podcast and he will stream video using Stickam. It will be called This Week In Startups (TWiST). As you know if you ever listen to Jason on This Week in Tech (TWIT) he really loves talking about business and startups. So this is a perfect show for him to start. From what we know so far he is going to have discussions, interviews, and cover startup news.

The podcast and video will be filmed at the Mahalo studio in Santa Monica. He has also mentioned on TWIT that he wants other to come down and use his studio for free as long as they give a little plug to Mahalo. That is a pretty good deal if you live in the area.

So you want to be like Leo Laporte and start a little Internet TV Station. Well in the grand scheme of things it’s not really that expensive, if you compared it to how much a real TV studio costs to set up. A real studio costs probably several hundreds of thousands of dollars to in the millions!! An internet studio can be had for a small fraction of that.

Let’s break down what Leo Laporte has in his studio:

1. The main component of his studio is a Tricaster. The Tricaster can control up to 6 Cameras and acts as a switcher and control center.

2. Next you are going to need some video cameras. Leo uses XL-1’s and GL-1’s and they work good, but it would be better to go with some newer HD cameras instead of copying his setup. He just happened to have the cameras so those are the ones he uses. A good choice would be to get some Canon HV20’s or HV30’s with some wide angle lens, that way you can have an HD studio. A 1 to 3 camera studio should do just fine to begin with.

3. Third you are going to need some lighting. There is nothing worse than having good cameras and a tricaster and having bad lighting (almost as bad as having bad sound). You will want to get LED based lighting to save you electricty and to prevent you from cooking yourself. At TWIT they use Lite Panels LCD lighting.

4. Then with the good lighting you are going to need good sound. Bad sound will ruin the best HD footage, so do the sound right!! Heil Sound PR40 is Leo’s mic of choice. You cant go wrong with these mics! They have some of the best sound in the business.

5. To connect and control all the sound sources you are going to need a mixer. The TWIT studio uses a Mackie Onyx 1620. You will need this to control the sound from the mics and computers.

6. Then you will probably want to have some headphones to monitor the sound. Any will do but these are the ones that Leo uses, so you can trust that they do the job nicely.

7. An account on Stickam, Justin.TV, or Ustream. These are services that allow you to stream your content 24 hours a day for free. They are all ad supported, which hopefully pays for their bandwidth. If you are good enough they will make deals with you are feature your content on the front page, and maybe even dedicated some extra servers to your video stream.

8. Finally you are going to need some CONTENT to broadcast on the internet!! Content is king and if you don’t have good content and produce it regularly you are not going to last very long.

Wow has it been that long? In 2005 the IPTV scene (New Media or Podcast) was very young and a group of guys and one girl out of Virgina jumped into the scene. Their show called Hak5 mixed technology, hacking, and humor into a great show monthly show. Fast forward to today and Hak5 has joined Revision3 and now produces shorter shows but releases them weekly.

Darren and the crew at Hak5 continue to bring the content to you along with a little humor. Their hacks are always interesting. Recently they have been streaming live on Ustream.tv so you can check out their set or the editing camera.
