Pakistan in the News

Last month I traveled to Pakistan as part of a UPIC (US-Pakistan Interreligious Consortium) delegation led by the Reverend Robert Chase, founder of Intersections International, a ministry of the Collegiate Church of New York. My involvement came through a sponsoring organization called Convergence, a bi-partisan group based in Washington DC.

Reflections and Memories from Pakistan

When I was young, I learned a prayer-poem that is sung in many Urdu-speaking families in India, where I was born and lived until I was eight. The poem is also sung all over Pakistan, uniting Pakistani and Indian Muslims across borders and tense relations between the two countries through a shared appreciation for the famous Pakistani poet Allama Iqbal.

A Surprising Start

My second day as Manager of the Veteran-Civilian Dialogue program at Intersections International was a day of surprising invitations, one seemingly having nothing to do with the other.

Why We Gather

(From Abu Dhabi) I have a long layover in Abu Dhabi, time to share what happened just a few hours ago in Lahore as our UPIC delegates gathered in our final session. We were dog tired, but we were determined to create a concrete action plan for next steps in our ongoing effort to build mutual respect and understanding between the US and Pakistan.

Combating the Lust for Certainty

(Lahore, Pakistan) We have moved to Lahore and the final two days of our US-Pakistan Interreligious Consortium (UPIC) gathering. A relatively uneventful trip (one bag lost) and some interesting conversations onboard during our brief flight has led us to the campus of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), one of our sponsoring partners.

Hard News, Good News

(Islamabad, Pakistan) On the first full day of our UPIC gathering here in Islamabad, interfaith delegates from the US and Pakistan dug deep into issues that divide our two countries. The exchanges were always respectful, but at times, the content left me gasping for air as I considered the distance between our societies and the pain that we have inflicted on one another.

We Have Seen “The Other” and They Are Us

LIFE (AND DEATH) INTERVENE AT UPIC

(Islamabad, Pakistan) As American delegates to the US-Pakistan Interreligious Consortium (UPIC) began to depart on Sunday for Pakistan, I was once again reminded that life is complex, that we as individuals are ultimately not in control, and that we have many entanglements that challenge us and—if we are attentive—present us with opportunities for deepened understanding of the

Believe Out Loud Update

March was an especially Holy month for Believe Out Loud: From celebrating the reflective and joyous season of Easter, to participating in the historic Supreme Court hearings for marriage equality, Believe Out Loud was front and center for it all.
