Real Madrid moved further ahead at the top of La Liga with a 3-1 win over basement boys Real Zaragoza at the Bernabéu.

Zaragoza started well with Ángel Lafita scoring an 11th-minute opener, but Madrid fought back and drew level just past the half hour mark when Kaká found the net.

Cristiano Ronaldo's 24th goal of the season put the hosts in front just after the break before Mesut Özil sealed the win with a third on 56 minutes.

Pep Guardiola's were particularly poor in the first half, while the second period saw them denied by a stout defensive performance and some good saves from Diego López.

Juventus extended their lead at the top of Serie A to four points with a 2-1 win over Udinese at a snowy Juventus Arena.

Alessandro Matri gave Juventus the lead just before half-time before Antonio Floro Flores drew Udinese level on 56 minutes.

But parity lasted just six minutes before Matri grabbed the winner for the home side just past the hour mark.

A 98th minute free-kick from Bruno Zita saw co-hosts Gabon storm into the into the African Cup of Nations quarterfinals at the expense of dark horses Morocco.

In a frantic finale, Gabon had looked to have claimed the win as two goals in three minutes late on through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Daniel Cousin saw them overturn a first-half deficit to lead 2-1 heading into injury time.

However, Morocco captain Houssine Kharja, who had earlier given his side a 24th-minute advantage, sent a high-pressure spot kick into the bottom right corner in the last minute of normal time to level up the scores and seemingly earn his side a vital draw.

There was still one late twist though as deep into stoppage time Gabon won a free-kick on the left corner of the penalty area.

And Zita stepped up to curl a superb effort inside the near top corner and send the home fans into raptures.

Reports has claimed that Liverpool owners were convinced to part with £20 million for Stewart Downing after watching a faked video of his footie skills.

Reds owners Tom Werner and John W Henry logged on to YouTube when manager Kenny Dalglish voiced his interest in the then Aston Villa player.

The Liverpool Echo quoted Werner as saying: "There was some footage of Stewart where he is kicking footballs into five different trash cans. It was brilliant.

"John and I said, 'Oh my god, this player is brilliant, we have to figure out a way to make a deal'."

It was only later that Werner and Henry realised the footage had been doctored by marketing brains at Villa Park as part of a viral advertising campaign.

A Villa source said: "There is a message after it which reads: 'Seeing is believing,' which we thought was a giveaway. Obviously it wasn't a big enough clue."

It will never be known for certain, but was this mock-up responsible for Liverpool increasing their offer from £18 millon to £20 millon when the two clubs were haggling over the fee last July?

Daniel Alves struck a world-class goal as Barcelona edged their way into the Copa del Rey semi-finals with a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid at home last night.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Madrid managed to concede another goal in the 43rd minute through substitute Pedro.

Then, just two minutes later, Alves made it a 4-1 lead on aggregate with a stunning second.

Xavi's free-kick deflected off the chest of Lassana Diarra and into the path of Alves, who sent a blistering shot into the top far corner past outstretched Iker Casillas.

Cristiano Ronaldo pulled a goal back in the 68th minute from time and four minutes later the visitors were level when Karim Benzema slammed home.

It was not enough for José Mourinho's side, though, as they were elimintated 4-3 on aggregate.

A trademark old-fashioned Alessandro Del Piero goal helped Juventus to a 3-0 win over 10-man AS Roma on Tuesday and earn a Coppa Italia semi-final berth.

The Old Lady opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Emanuele Giaccherini latched onto a searching Andrea Barzagli pass and kept his cool to place an angled drive over the on-rushing Maarten Stekelenburg.

Juve captain Del Piero then doubled their lead on the half-hour mark with a simply stunning goal, which used to be called "alla Del Piero".

It was in his style, charging forward, cutting back past his marker to find space on the edge of the box and curling a sublime shot across Stekelenburg and into the net via the crossbar.

The goal was Del Piero's first of the season and it was also a fitting way for the 37-year-old veteran to break his duck in Juventus' new stadium.

And the popular forward was resoundingly applauded when he went off 13 minutes from time, with coach Antonio Conte also joining in the lengthy standing ovation.

"Finally, he scored an amazing goal, he's been trying for a while," Conte said. "He will always be the answer for us and never a problem."

Del Piero added: "It was a nice goal and I'm happy to have scored it on such a particular day in this club's history - the anniversary of Gianni Agnelli's death.

"It was also nice to score because the goal wasn't just a moment, it came during a good performance, made up of plenty of movement and exchanges with teammates."

A second-half red card for Erik Lamela and a late Simon Kjær own goal eventually ensured that the Bianconeri would progress with the minimum of fuss.

In a friendly match on Monday between Metalist Kharkiv and Dynamo Moscow, Ukrainian-based Argentine left-back Cristian Villagra scored a golazo that will be an instant viral hit.

Metalist were awarded a free-kick in the middle of their own half of the pitch, and the eagle-eyed Villagra spotted the Dynamo goalkeeper wondering about 10-yards off his goalline.

Without a moment's pause Villagra took the opportunity to have a pot-shot on the Russian and the result was simply spectacular.

Gareth Bale scored a stunning goal against Manchester City but could not prevent Tottenham Hotspur losing in a five-goal thriller at the Etihad Stadium.

City took the lead in the 56th minute when Samir Nasri crashed the ball into the net after latching onto David Silva's delightful through ball, and Joleon Lescott then doubled their advantage minutes later scrambling in from a corner.

Spurs responded immediately and with Jermain Defoe capitalising on an error from Stefan Savić to beat Joe Hart and finish into an empty net.

Moments later, Bale looked to have completed the comeback for the visitors with one of those goals a keeper can only shrug their shoulders at being beaten by.

The Welshman took Aaron Lennon's pass outside the area before hitting the ball first-time with a languid swing of the left leg that sent it curling over Hart and into the top corner.

It was a sensational strike, even though Harry Redknapp has seen it all before.

"He scored one better than that in training yesterday, the most amazing goal you’ve ever seen," said the Spurs boss after the game.

But the hosts secured a dramatic late victory when Ledley King brought down Mario Balotelli in stoppage time and the Italian made no mistake slotting home from the spot.

Danny Welbeck struck nine minutes from time to give Manchester United a 2-1 victory over Arsenal 2-1 at Emirates Stadium.

The Red Devils went ahead inon the stroke of half-time as Ryan Giggs whipped an inch-perfect cross to the back post where Antonio Valencia beat Thomas Vermaelen in the air to nod home.

Arsenal drew level 20 minutes from time when youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain squared for Robin van Persie and his reverse shot flew through Jonny Evans' legs and in off the post.

But Welbeck saved the day for United in the 81st minute after Valencia turned provider, allowing the young striker to slot home from close range.

Mario Balotelli stepped off the bench to net a stoppage-time penalty as Manchester City recorded a thrilling 3-2 success over Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium.

After an uneventful first half, City took control with goals from Samir Nasri and Joleon Lescott before Spurs hit back to level through Jermain Defoe and a Gareth Bale beauty, with all four goals coming in the space of 10 manic minutes.

But substitute Balotelli secured the success for the league leaders with his penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time, picking himself up to calmly score from 12 yards after being brought down by Ledley King.

Fernando Llorente fired the visiting side ahead on 13 minutes before Marcelo charged into the area to pul Madrid level in the 25th minute.

Ronaldo then added two penalties before José María Callejón capped off the victory with a late fourth.

After a goalless first half, Ibrahimović broke the deadlock for the Rossoneri on 57 minutes when he latched on to Massimo Ambrosini's through ball and fired a shot past Samir Ujkani.

Giampaolo Pazzini scored a controversial winner as Inter Milan came from behind to beat Lazio 2-1 at home and extend their winning run to eight consecutive victories in all competitions.

Tommaso Rocchi put the visitors in front after half an hour, but Diego Milito levelled just before the half-time break.

Pazzini completed the comeback with a debatable on 63 minutes, latching on to Lúcio's long header from an offside position to lob the ball over Federico Marchetti and into the back of the net.
