La Liga: Atlético Madrid 2-3 Real Madrid

Real Madrid are just a point behind leaders Barcelona after they prevailed 3-2 in a thrilling derby contest against city rivals Atlético Madrid at the Vicente Calderón.

Kaká put the visitors in front after just four minutes when he rifled a shot past Sergio Asenjo's right hand and into the top corner.

Marcelo increased the lead on 25 minutes and Gonzalo Higuaín appeared to seal the game in the 64th minute.

But Atlético were handed a glimmer of hope when Sergio Ramos was sent off for tripping Sergio Agüero on the edge of the box.

Diego Forlán gave them hope with 11 minutes remaining and Agüero set up a grandstand finish when he slotted home on 81 minutes.

Barcelona have yet to taste defeat in the league this season as they cruised to a routine 4-2 win at home to Real Mallorca.

Promising forward Pedro Rodríguez curled a shot around Dudu Aouate to give Barcelona the lead in the 11th minute, but was shocked to see José Carlos Nunes level things up nine minutes later.

Pedro, though, restored his side's lead on 41 minutes when he pounced on a rebound after three straight saves by Aouate.

Thierry Henry headed home his first league goal of the season just before half-time and Lionel Messi stepped off the bench to convert an 87-th minute penalty.

Substitute Alhassane Keita added some respectability to the scoreline when he bagged Mallorca's second of the night in injury-time.

Juventus strengthened their hold on second place with an impressive 5-2 away win against Atalanta.

Mauro Camoranesi stunned the home side with a quickfire brace in the 36th and 37th minutes to give Juventus a 2-0 halftime lead.

Jaime Valdés reduced the arrears early in the second half, only for Felipe Melo to restore Juve's two-goal cushion in the 55th minute.

But Juventus' poor defending again allowed Atalanta back into the game when Fabio Ceravolo curled home on 70 minutes and set up an exciting finale.

However, Diego finally killed off Atalanta's hopes with a fourth Juventus goal five minutes from time and David Trezeguet wrapped up the win with his 177th goal in Italian football two minutes later.

Takayuki Morimoto had a number of opportunities for Catania while Cristian Llama tested the Napoli goal but they were not able to break the deadlock as the match ended goalless.

Free-scoring Arsenal moved to within two points of leaders Chelsea after hammering Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 at Molineux.

Two own goals, from Ronald Zubar and Jody Craddock, handed the visitors a commanding lead inside 36 minutes.

Cesc Fàbregas then fired in a third after a typically slick move on the stroke of half-time and Andrei Arshavin added a touch of gloss to the scoreline in the second half.

Wolves pulled one back on the stroke of full-time when Craddock powered home a header from substitute Matt Jarvis' corner.

Big-spending Manchester City were held to a fifth successive draw as they played out a six goal thriller with Burnley at Eastlands.

The visitors stunned Mark Hughes' side by flying into a two-goal lead inside the opening 32 minutes. Graham Alexander's penalty put the Clarets ahead and Steven Fletcher exploited some slack defensive work to double their lead.

But Shaun Wright-Phillips hauled the hosts back into the game shortly before half-time when his shot took a wicked deflection off former City defender Stephen Jordan.

City raised their game after the interval and leveled matters as Kolo Touré was on hand to convert Joleon Lescott's pull-back on the stretch from Gareth Barry's free-kick.

And it got even better for the home side just a few minutes later when Craig Bellamy finished Wright-Phillips' low cross smartly for his 100th league goal in English football.

However, Kevin McDonald's late equaliser silenced the home support to leave City's title dreams faltering.

Darren Bent endured an afternoon of frustration as he missed a penalty for Sunderland in a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Robbie Keane put Spurs ahead on 12 minutes as he bundled home from close range Peter Crouch's towering header back across goal from Benoît Assou-Ekotto's cross.

Sunderland had the perfect chance to level the scores at the start of the second-half when Bent was felled in the box after rounding Heurelho Gomes. The Brazilian keeper was fortuitous to escape with just a booking and then exacerbated Steve Bruce's wrath on the touchline as he brilliantly saved Bent's low spot-kick.

Tom Huddlestone then extended the advantage when his first-time shot from the edge of the area rattled the underside of the bar before flying into the roof of the net.

Five different players were on the scoresheet for Aston Villa as they thumped a dismal Bolton Wanderers 5-1 at Villa Park.

Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor got Villa off to a flier before Bolton reduced the arrears on 45 minutes through substitute Johan Elmander.

But John Carew turned the game Villa's way with the third, before James Milner fired home after he had just missed a penalty, with a Carlos Cuéllar flick-header completing the rout.

Women's soccer player suspended for dirty play

A dirty play during a women's soccer match is getting some national attention because of the blatant violent roughness caught on camera by one player.

New Mexico junior defender Elizabeth Lambert is seen in video from the game against Brigham Young shoving one player, kicking another, kicking the ball into another's face (for which Lambert received a yellow card) and finally violently yanking an opponent to the ground by her pony tail.

Lambert’s actions have made her an Internet celebrity for the wrong reasons. Highlights have been airing nationally since Thursday night.

"I am deeply and wholeheartedly regretful for my actions," Lambert said in a statement released by New Mexico.

"My actions were uncalled for. I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation."

"I take full responsibility for my actions and accept any punishment felt necessary from the coaching staff and UNM administration.

"This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player I am. I am sorry to my coaches and teammates for any and all damages I have brought upon them.

"I am especially sorry to BYU and the BYU women's soccer players that were personally affected by my actions.

"I have the utmost respect for the BYU women's soccer program and its players."

Didier Drogba told to change behaviour by son

Didier Drogba has revealed that his recent attitude adjustment came after his son told him his behaviour after Chelsea's Champions League exit to Barcelona was wrong.

The Ivory Coast megastar launched his infamous wild-eyed rant at referee Tom Henning Øvrebø at the end of last season's semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge, which ended 1-1 and saw Barcelona through to the final on away goals.

"My son was watching with his friends from school and I was embarrassed by my behaviour," Drogba told The Times.

"The good thing was that Isaac came to me and said, ‘It’s not right what you did, Dad, you should have had more penalties, but it’s not right to do that to referees.’

"I told him never to do what I did. He’s 8 and plays for Chelsea Under-9s, but is very different to me. He’s really calm."

He added: "It was really difficult after the Barcelona game because I made a mistake, but was frustrated that people didn’t understand why I reacted.

"I apologised and everything, but I also wanted to show I’m not the person people think I am. I’m not a bad guy, I just want to win and sometimes I react.

"The passion drives me. It’s a part of my behaviour I need to improve, but people are human beings."

Sunderland striker Darren Bent insists his time at Tottenham Hotspur was a "horrible" period in his career.

The 25-year-old heads back to White Hart Lane for the first time since his acrimonious £10 million summer exit.

He feels he was never given the opportunity under Harry Redknapp to justify the £16 million fee paid to Charlton Athletic in July 2007, and he had to ditch Spurs to salvage his confidence.

Bent told The Sun: "It was horrible at Tottenham - people doubted me and my confidence took a battering.

"When you are not playing you're never going to make an impression."

The four-cap England international reached his lowest point in January this year when he missed at sitter in a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth - a chance Redknapp later claimed his wife Sandra would have tucked away.

He added: "It was a difficult period in my career, there were times I doubted myself.

"When people are levelling criticism at you it is not nice to take."

Former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso has backed his former manager Rafa Benítez to turn things around at Anfield.

Alonso has seen his former team-mates fall off the pace in the Premier League since his summer departure to Real Madrid and Benítez has come under fire from supporters for his sale of the midfielder.

"It’s not the Liverpool way to sack a manager after a few bad results early in the season. They have full confidence in him and he is the right man for the club," Alonso told The Times.

"I think he’s a great manager. He’s capable of managing the squad he has got right now. He has been making decisions for a long time.

"It wouldn’t be a good decision to change the manager. I still have great respect for him. I’m very grateful to him for the five great years I had at Liverpool.

"He knows the squad very well and works with them on a daily basis. The situation isn’t the best right now but he knows how to turn it around."

Atlético Madrid star Sergio Agüero admits he is flattered to be linked with a move to Chelsea, but insists that he is happy to stay at the Vicente Calderón.

The Blues are understood to be long-term admirers of the 21-year-old and Agüero could have only enhanced his appeal with two stunning goals in their midweek Champions League clash.

"It's nice that people say I could play in a team like Chelsea, one of the best in the world," Agüero told AS.

"I like that. It makes me happy but I am the same person as ever and I think the same as before.

"I know that people were saying they wanted me during the summer and that there were several teams tracking me but nothing ever came to me and I am happy at Atlético. Though now things are going badly.

"I have been here for four years. I came as an 18-year-old - very young. I feel almost as if I was born here.

"This club has given me great joy - and sadness too - but this is a place where I feel good. I want to fight for Atlético to the death."

Arsenal virtually booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League after a comfortable 4-1 victory over AZ Alkmaar at the Emirates.

Cesc Fàbregas opened the scoring for the Gunners on 25 minutes with a low strike and then a fine goal from Samir Nasri doubled the home side's lead before the half-time whistle.

Fàbregas made it 3-0 seven minutes into the second half when he curled a delightful effort into the far corner and Abou Diaby notched a fourth on 72 minutes when he added the final touch to a rapid counter attack.

Substitute Jeremain Lens pulled one back for AZ towards the end, but there was no way back for the visitors.

Lee McCulloch opened the scoring after 79 minutes with a powerful effort from outside the box.

Fiorentina are now five points clear of their Group E rivals Liverpool after their third successive win saw them dispatch Debrecen 5-2 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Adrian Mutu opened the scoring on 14 minutes with a controlled header before Gergely Rudolf squared things up on 38 minutes when he volleyed home at the back post.

Captain Dario Dainelli regained his side's lead with a brave header on 59 minutes before substitute Riccardo Montolivo added a third and Marco Marchionni scored a fourth two minutes later.

Adamo Coulibaly nodded one back for Debrecen after 70 minutes, but it was nothing more than a consolation, and Alberto Gilardino rounded off the hosts' victory with a fifth 16 minutes before time.

Chelsea played out a 2-2 draw with Atlético Madrid which was enough for them to progress to the knockout stages with two games to spare.

Atlético went ahead just after the hour when Sergio Agüero - who started the match on the bench - slammed an unstoppable volley from just inside the box as John Terry headed clear from Antonio López.

The Blues then came back strongly and Didier Drogba, who missed the first three games of Group D through suspension, popped up with two goals in the last eight minutes to turn the game in Chelsea's favour.

But there was still a late twist as Atlético netted an injury-time equaliser when Agüero curled home a wonderful free-kick from 25 yards out to seal a share of the spoils.

Olympique Marseille found themselves just a point behind joint group leaders AC Milan and Real Madrid after a 6-1 rout of FC Zürich at the Stade Vélodrome.

The opener came from Fabrice Abriel's superb inswinging free-kick from the left which Silvan Aegerter could only head into his own net at the near post.

Abriel then got on the score-sheet and it was almost a carbon copy of the opening goal, except this time nobody got a touch and the ball flew straight into the corner of the net.

Zürich got back into the game on the half-hour when Alexandre Alphonse hammered the ball home from the edge of the box after a fluid passing move from the visitors.

But their hope was fleeting as Mamadou Niang soon restored his side's two-goal advantage on 52 minutes, lobbing Zürich keeper Johnny Leoni after being played through by a superb one-two with Bakari Koné.

Marseille then moved into overdrive with three goals in the final ten minutes as Hilton, Benoit Cheyrou and Brandão all scored.
