Josep Maria Bartomeu left the Barcelona presidency in October 2020 with the club in severe financial difficulty.

His tenure had produced major sporting success, including four La Liga titles and the 2014/15 treble, but the cost of maintaining that success had become increasingly difficult to sustain.
