Dambrauskas gradually established himself as a senior coach, taking charge of Lithuanian clubs including Ekranas and Zalgiris before moving abroad.

The idea that British players struggle abroad has been around for decades.

Ian Rush famously became associated with a quotation about his experience in Italy being like "living in a foreign country," although the former Liverpool striker has repeatedly denied ever saying it.

Whether the quote was genuine or not, the stereotype it represents has proved remarkably persistent.

There have, of course, been notable exceptions.

John Charles remains one of the most revered British players in Juventus history, whilst Paul Ince enjoyed two impressive seasons at Inter in the 1990s. But successful British players in Serie A were relatively rare throughout the 20th century.

Some of England's biggest names struggled to adapt. Jimmy Greaves' time in Italy was brief, whilst Paul Gascoigne's career at Lazio was disrupted by injuries and off-field problems.

The prevailing assumption became straightforward: if an English player wanted to succeed, staying in England was usually the safer option.

That mindset is changing.

John Stones wanted a new challenge

Stones' move is perhaps the clearest example of a player actively seeking a different footballing experience.

The defender turned 32 in May before leaving Manchester City when his contract expired the following month. After spending his entire professional career in England, including a decade at City, the prospect of experiencing another country was too good to ignore.

It was something I had always wanted to do.

I want to learn new things, understand a new way of playing and experience a new league.

That motivation is significant.

Stones is not moving to Italy simply because he has reached the later stages of his career. He is deliberately stepping outside his comfort zone and testing himself in a football culture that places different demands on defenders.

And Serie A remains one of the best places to do exactly that.

Why Serie A is such a different test

Italian football may no longer enjoy the overwhelming global dominance it possessed during the 1990s and early 2000s, but its tactical reputation remains intact.

For defenders in particular, Serie A can demand a different kind of intensity.

Fikayo Tomori, who has experienced both English and Italian football, previously explained the contrast to The Athletic.

In England, intensity is, "We've got to be at them, run harder than them" - everything like that. Here, it's mental not only in the preparation for the game and dealing with outside pressures and fan expectation.

Having that intensity, in terms of concentration, in terms of we can't make a mistake, or we have to make as few mistakes as possible. Obviously it's impossible to not make a mistake, but to make the least mistakes possible to win this game.

It is a different form of pressure - less about constantly sprinting into battles and more about understanding positioning, anticipating danger and avoiding the one error that can decide a game.

For a player such as Stones, who has spent much of his career in Pep Guardiola's highly structured City system, that should make the transition particularly interesting.

Djed Spence already knows the challenge

Spence has an advantage that Stones and Jones do not.

The full-back already knows what it is like to play in Italy, having spent six months on loan at Genoa during the second half of the 2023/24 season.

Rather than being put off by the experience, Spence wanted another opportunity abroad.

You learn so much when you play abroad. I can say I became a man when I was abroad and I'm grateful for the experience.

That experience could prove valuable at Inter.

Spence already understands some of the tactical and cultural differences involved in playing in Italy, whilst his versatility gives Inter another option across the defensive positions.

Curtis Jones was sold on Inter by the San Siro

Jones' move arguably tells the story best.

The support from the fans is unbelievable. The Inter supporters really are the 12th man.

I was out on the San Siro pitch and I could hear them singing and supporting the players throughout.

There is another reason why the moves make sense.

The football used by Diego Maradona for his infamous "Hand of God" goal against England at the 1986 FIFA World Cup has sold for $3.35 million at auction.

The Adidas Azteca match ball was sold by Heritage Auctions in Dallas on Saturday, after bidding opened at $2.5 million. Its final price fell considerably short of the auction house's pre-sale estimate of $10 million or more.

Despite missing that ambitious valuation, the sale places one of football's most recognisable pieces of memorabilia firmly among the game's most valuable historic artefacts.

Heritage had described the ball as potentially the most valuable football item ever sold and arguably one of the most famous balls in sporting history.

The ball behind two legendary goals

The ball was used during Argentina's 2-1 quarter-final victory over England in Mexico in 1986, when Maradona produced two moments that would become central to his legacy.

His first goal came in the 51st minute. Maradona rose to challenge England goalkeeper Peter Shilton and used his left hand to steer the ball into the net.

The officials failed to spot the infringement and awarded the goal.

Maradona later gave the moment its famous name, saying it had been scored "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God."

Four minutes later, he produced something entirely different.

The ball was first sold at auction in 2022 for $2.37 million.

It was then offered again in 2023, but the sale failed after bidding did not reach the reserve price. Reports put the unsuccessful top bid at around $2.04 million.

Heritage's latest auction therefore delivered a higher price, although still nowhere near the $10 million level anticipated beforehand.

The latest result also falls considerably short of the price achieved by another piece of memorabilia from the same match.

Maradona's shirt from Argentina's quarter-final against England sold for nearly $9.3 million at Sotheby's in 2022.

Josep Maria Bartomeu left the Barcelona presidency in October 2020 with the club in severe financial difficulty.

His tenure had produced major sporting success, including four La Liga titles and the 2014/15 treble, but the cost of maintaining that success had become increasingly difficult to sustain.
