Turkish club Samsunspor survive after train crashes into bus

Members of the Turkish top flight Samsunspor narrowly, and thankfully, averted tragedy after a train collided with their team bus early on Tuesday.

The team was apparently on their way home from an away match against Kardemir Karabükspor when the bus was side-swiped by a slow-moving train.

Miraculously, not only were no players killed in the shocking crash, but only defender Hakan Arslan and midfielder Serdar Özkan suffered significant but not life-threatening injuries.

Speaking to the press, bus driver Recep Terzi explained: "It was midnight. The ramps were up when I was about to cross.

"While slowly crossing, I realized a train was approaching and had its lights off. I immediately accelerated.

"After I stepped on the gas, the train hit the left back wheel of the bus and pushed us aside.

"If I had not seen the train at the last second, it would have hit the middle of the bus and that would have led to great damage and could have even cost many lives.

"The players awoke in panic; many later said they were lucky to have survived."

The same club experienced a similar train-crash accident 23 years ago in which the technical director, the coach driver and three players died.

Sunday saw Londrina draw 1-1 at Iraty in Brazil's Campeonato Paranaense, and the opener scored by the visitors was truly breathtaking.

It looked impossible for Londrina striker Alexandre Oliveira to score as a right wing cross was fizzed into the marksman, as he was stationed with his back to goal and with a defender for company. But that only raised the quality of the golazo which duly unfolded.

After flicking the ball up with a beautifully cushioned first touch, Oliveira executed an incredible bicycle-kick from the edge of the Iraty box that flew like a tomahawk into the far top corner.

Liverpool were held to their eight home league draw of the season following a goalless stalemate against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds set the tone at Anfield but they could not find a way through the resolute Spurs defense.

Instead it was Gareth Bale had the best chance of the night after being played in one-on-one late on but shot straight at Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina.

Juan Mata scored a scorching volley as Chelsea threw a three-goal lead to draw with Manchester United in one of the games of the season at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Blues went ahead nine minutes before half-time when Jonny Evans put through his own goal following clever work by Daniel Sturridge.

Chelsea then doubled the advantage with a contender for goal of the season from Mata 25 seconds into the second half.

Fernando Torres got the ball in space on the right flank, and picked out Mata with a pin-point cross before the Spain international rifled home a sumptuous volley that threatened to rip the netting out of David de Gea's goal.

And just five minutes later, the home side had a third, after Mata's free-kick was flicked on by David Luiz and turned home by Rio Ferdinand's shoulder.

But Wayne Rooney finally sparked United into life with two penalties midway through the second half and the champions' frenzied pressure was rewarded when substitute Javier Hernández rescued a point with a header six minutes from time.

Substitute Javier Hernández came off the bench to bring Manchester United back from three goals down to draw 3-3 with Chelsea in a thriller at Stamford Bridge.

The game remained fairly balanced towards the end of the half, but then out of the blue, the Blues struck the first blow courtesy of Jonny Evans' unfortunate own goal.

Just seconds had elapsed when Juan Mata doubled the advantage with a goal of the season contender before Rio Ferdinand joined Evans in putting through his own goal when he deflected in David Luiz's header from a set-piece.

United battled back manfully as Wayne Rooney kept his nerve from the penalty spot twice to reduce the deficit to a solitary goal, after referee Howard Webb adjudged first Patrice Evra and then Danny Welbeck had been fouled in the area.

More drama was to follow when in the 84th minute substitute Hernández nodded in from close range Ryan Giggs' cross after Petr Čech had parried Rooney's snapshot.

AS Roma secured a crushing 4-0 home victory over Inter Milan to move to sixth place in the Serie A standings.

Two first-half goals from Juan and Fabio Borini gave the capital giants a commanding lead going into the break at the Stadio Olimpico.

Borini added a third shortly after the restart before Bojan Krkić put the seal on an emphatic win in the closing stages.

Portugal midfielder Hugo Viana scored the winner from his own half in the last seconds of injury time night as Sporting Braga booked their place in the Portuguese League Cup semi-final.

With 93 minutes already played, and the score 0-0, Braga won a free-kick just inside their own half.

Viana, showing the vision that has been a trademark of his style throughout his career, noticed the keeper off his line and lobbed Portimonense's Sergio from his own half.

"I saw the goalkeeper advance, the ball was there and I took a chance and it went flawlessly," Viana said after the game.

"Is it the best of my career? Yes, maybe, it is a goal from 50 metres, it's not just any goal is it!"

Everton came from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic after a bizarre mistake from goalkeeper Tim Howard looked to have gifted the hosts the win.

The Latics, struggling at the foot of the table, have been short on luck this season but they certainly got a huge slice of it in the 76th minute as Everton gifted them the softest of goals.

Wigan spread the ball from right to left and Jean Beausejour's cross hit the foot of Phil Neville and seemed to be rolling into Howard's hands.

But the American goalkeeper was deceived by the spin and the ball looped into the net for an own goal.

Everton rallied almost immediately, however, levelling the scores with eight minutes remaining when substitute Victor Anichebe headed home a Leighton Baines cross.

"It was a complete freak goal. I could hardly believe it. It took a big bobble," Everton boss David Moyes told Sky Sports.

"The pitch here is poor. It's very heavy in the middle. Probably with the rugby coming I can see it getting worse."

Robin van Persie bagged a hat-trick as ruthless Arsenal hammered 10-man Blackburn Rovers 7-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners captain tapped home in the opening two minutes before a spectacular free-kick from Morten Gamst Pedersen restored parity shortly after the half-hour mark.

Van Persie restored Arsenal's lead on 38 minutes before turning provider with a sumptuous pass to feed in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the third two minutes later.

A forgettable opening 45 minutes for the visitors was compounded shortly before the interval when Gaël Givet was shown a straight red card for a lunging challenge on van Persie.

Mikel Arteta lashed Arsenal into a three-goal lead six minutes into the second half and Oxlade-Chamberlain grabbed his second of the game on 54 minutes.

Van Persie swept home number six, and his third of the afternoon, on 62 minutes and substitute Thierry Henry put the icing on the cake as he bundled home a seventh in stoppage time.

Manchester City moved clear at the top of the Premier League table with a 3-0 victory over Fulham at the Etihad Stadium.

England winger Adam Johnson was at the heart of the action in the first half and, when he went down in the area following contact with Chris Baird's leg after nine minutes, Sergio Agüero stepped up to tuck away the penalty.

Just before the half-hour, City doubled their lead when Baird could only divert Johnson's attempted pull back into the danger area beyond his own goalkeeper.

The conditions worsened markedly after the interval, with the groundstaff called upon to clear the lines on several occasions, before Edin Džeko got on the scoresheet on 72 minutes with a simple finish after unselfish play from Agüero.

Reigning champions Barcelona remain undefeated at the Camp Nou this season as they clinched a narrow 2-1 win over Real Sociedad.

Youth player Cristian Tello opened the scoring for Barça after just nine minutes before Lionel Messi added another goal on 72 minutes, ending the Argentine's three-game run without a goal.

But just when Barcelona looked likely to cruise to another comfortable home win, Sociedad substitute Carlos Vela got behind the defense and coolly slotted home two minutes later to ensur the hosts were unable to rest easy.

At least 74 people were killed and 248 injured following a massive pitch invasion in Port Said, Egypt.

Al-Masry defeated bitter rivals Al-Ahly 3-1 in an Egyptian league game, but the result overshadowed by incredibly shocking scenes at the full time whistle.

Thousands of Al-Masry fans flooded the field and began assaulting fans and players of the Egyptian champions Al-Ahly.

A nasty game of cat and mouse was captured on TV as the Al-Ahly squad literally ran for cover whilst Al-Masry fans threw rocks and bottles at them.

One man told state TV he heard gunshots in the stadium, while a lawmaker from Egypt's powerful Muslim Brotherhood said the police didn't prevent fans carrying knives from entering the stadium.

The two clubs have had a fractious relationship for some time, with several clashes occurring between fans over the years.

The melee was the worst cases of football violence in Egypt and the deadliest worldwide since 1996 when at least 78 people died and 180 others were injured in a stampede at a stadium in Guatemala City before a World Cup qualifying match between Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Meanwhile, horrific quotes from Al-Ahly players have reached the wires.

Mohamed Aboutrika: "The security forces left us, they did not protect us. One fan has just died in the dressing room in front of me."

Sherif Ekramy: "There were people dying in front of us. It's over. We've all made a decision that we won't play football any more. How will we play football after 70 people died? We can't think about it."

Inter Milan were held to a stunning 4-4 draw by Palermo at the San Siro despite Diego Milito scored four goals for the Nerazzurri.

Andrea Mantovani broke the deadlock for Palermo on 16 minutes, but Milito's quick response ensured scores were level at half-time.

Fabrizio Miccoli restored Palermo's lead on 52 minutes only for Milito to equalise for a second time from the penalty spot three minutes later.

Milito gave Inter the lead for the first time on 61 minutes but Miccoli levelled the scores at 3-3 in the 66th minute.

Argentine ace Milito grabbed his fourth goal of the game on 68 minutes, but Miccoli had the last laugh as he bagged a treble of his own, with his 85th minute strike forcing the two sides to share the spoils.

Late goals from Hernanes and Tommaso Rocchi gave Lazio a 2-0 victory over AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico.

The hosts went in front on 77 minutes when Rocchi fed Hernanes inside the box and his right-footed strike towards the left corner of goal beat Christian Abbiati.

Rocchi capped off a wonderful evening for the hosts five minutes from time, firing home from 10 yards after being found by Senad Lulić.

Arsenal missed the chance to move above Liverpool into fifth in the Premier League after being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.
