Along with pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, SEO is one of the twin pillars of an affiliate’s SEM strategy. The more effectively an affiliate search-optimises their website, the higher it will be listed in the organic search results of search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo! Obviously, the higher an affiliate’s ranking, the more traffic it will receive, which can then be driven on to operator websites – resulting in greater revenue figures for everyone involved.

The Basics: What’s in a Word?

First of all, let’s get down to basics. How do affiliates optimise their websites? The foundation of all SEO is keywords. These are the group of words people type into search engines when looking for websites and information online.

To optimise their websites, affiliates need to select the words that most appropriately represent their site in general, its individual pages and the brands of the operators with which they’re affiliated. This is accomplished by first analysing their offering and then conducting research using, for instance, Google AdWords’ Keyword Tool.

Don’t Let People Search in Vain

Newcomers to SEO are often tempted to take the term ‘keywords’ literally and limit their choices to one or two words with high traffic in the relevant market. Almost as bad as these ‘fathead’ keywords are longer keywords where the additional words continue to reflect the affiliate’s website in only the vaguest way. For example, if an affiliate’s site specialises in advertising sportsbook brands, the temptation is to come up with broad terms like “sports betting” and other equally unfocused sets of words.

Known as ‘vanity’ keywords, these general terms end up getting the affiliate’s website buried by search engines due to the fierce competition from other websites for these keywords. And SEO that leads to low rankings for a website is worse than no SEO at all, which at least doesn’t involve wasted time and resources.

Longtail Keywords: A Long-Term SEM Solution

So if ‘fathead’ keywords and vague ‘vanity’ keywords aren’t effective as an SEM solution, what is? A Slingshot SEO study found that keywords using three or more targeted words generated 3.5 times more organic monthly traffic than ‘fathead’ keywords. Keyword phrases featuring three or more keywords, though preferably no more than five, are known as ‘longtail’ keywords.

Developing ‘longtail’ keywords involve finding an affiliate website’s niche, where competition is lower. Returning to the sportsbook example we mentioned previously, if we carry out more detailed research we ascertain that the affiliate offers players the chance to check sporting odds and also gives them betting advice. As a result, we replace the vague ‘fathead’ keywords of “sports betting” with ‘longtail’ ones like “betting odds, daily bookmaker tips”.

‘Longtail’ keywords like this will drive targeted traffic – the right sort of traffic that’s likely to convert. Indeed, another SEO study suggests that ‘longtail’ keywords are 2.5 times more likely to convert into a sale – or, in affiliates’ case, registration with an operator – than their ‘fathead’ counterparts.

The choice is simple: cut out ‘fatheads’ and ‘vanity’ keywords and use ‘longtail’ ones instead for a long-term SEM strategy.

Along with pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, SEO is one of the twin pillars of an affiliate’s SEM strategy. The more effectively an affiliate search-optimises their website, the higher it will be listed in the organic search results of search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo! Obviously, the higher an affiliate’s ranking, the more traffic it will receive, which can then be driven on to operator websites –resulting in greater revenue figures for everyone involved.

The iGaming industry is a young one whose roots only go back to the late 1990s. Nonetheless, since then, the industry has grown rapidly for both operators and their affiliates. iGaming is now the fifth highest-spending sector for online performance marketing with annual investment totalling more than $800 million, according to the UK Internet Advertising Bureau.

Those who’ve been involved in the industry from the beginning look back on online gaming’s early days around the Millennium as a time of great change and opportunity for affiliates. At Income Access, we think that those times have returned following recent technological and regulatory developments.

Technologies Socialise & Mobilise

At the time of the Millennium, Facebook was merely a figment of Mark Zuckerberg’s imagination. The social networking site he set-up in 2004 changed the Internet forever, including iGaming.

Just three years later, the social game company Zynga was founded, releasing its first game, the free-play Texas Hold’Em Poker, on Facebook. Zynga moved into real-money gaming in October 2012 by partnering with Bwin.Party, with the two companies rolling out ZyngaPlusPoker and ZyngaPlusCasino in April for UK players, as the US remained a closed market. Social gaming had come of age.

While social gaming expanded, another important technological development had been going on – the smart phone revolution. The first BlackBerry device was launched in 1999, but it wasn’t until the release of Apple’s iPhone in 2007 that smart phones started to be adopted by the general public. In 2013, they’re almost ubiquitous: more smart phones are now being manufactured than traditional cell phones, according to research firm IDC.

This technological shift has led to the rise of mobile gambling apps, which generated annual revenue of close to $5 billion by 2011. Sportsbooks William Hill, Paddy Power and bet365 report that more than 30% of their gross gaming revenues comes from mobile and tablet customers.

Before the Floodgates Open…

The current revenue originating from mobile gambling is set to get a whole lot bigger. Gartner forecast that mobile revenues could hit $11.4 billion next year, while Juniper Research is even more optimistic with its projection of revenues of $48 billion by 2015. Importantly, both forecasts are based on gambling regulation opening up in Europe and the US.

Belgium is the latest European market to loosen its online gambling laws. Sweden and the Netherlands are keen to follow suit. Everyone in the iGaming industry, however, has their eyes focused on the US, which is only just beginning to open up. Legislation for online operations has finally been left to individual states. On April 30, Nevada became the first state to allow residents to legally gamble online, and New Jersey is very close to approving legislation. The regulatory floodgates are about to spring wide open…

Seize the Opportunity to Socialise & Mobilise

At Income Access, we think the opening up of the US to online gaming represents a huge opportunity for affiliates. We also think that social and mobile gaming’s roles in the iGaming industry are only going to get bigger down the road. As a result, affiliates should seize the opportunity represented by the US market and transform themselves into social and mobile affiliates. This diversified breed of affiliates stand the highest chance of profiting from iGaming’s changing times.

Make sure to check out Nicky Senyard, Income Access founder and CEO, who’ll be speaking on social gambling at the iGaming Super Show in Amsterdam. The session, titled Strategizing today for monetization tomorrow – how affiliates can capitalize on social gambling, takes place at 10:35am on June 13th!
