I read this article by Patrick Sarkissian this morning, where he expresses that analyzing metrics in advertising campaigns are killing the creative process of advertisers. In fact, he goes so far as to say that when the economy takes a nosedive, clients are apt to stop supporting the creative ideas that come from their advertisers, and just look at the numbers.

Patrick works for an ad agency that has to be accountable to executives from the companies that are paying them.  As an affiliate marketer, however, you answer to nobody but yourself.  So, the question is, are your metrics killing your creativity?

I’ve said it a thousand times, and I’ll say it again, the most important thing in a successful online advertising campaign is the analytics. Without analyzing the performance of a specific campaign, banner, or landing page, it’s impossible to understand whether or not you are reaching your target audience, and we have to keep trying until we find the formula that works.

Perhaps commenting on Patrick’s article is a little bit unfair as the circumstances are somewhat different, and that’s part of what makes being an affiliate marketer so great: that testing and analyzing the performance of your advertising campaigns online is what encourages creativity and because you’re only accountable to yourself and not a room full of executives, you can try new things until you find what works.

There is a tendency to panic when sales begin to decline, whether you’re a top executive at a Fortune 500 company, or an affiliate marketer with one or even 50 websites. The challenge, at this point, is in the interpretation of your metrics. What does it mean when you’re getting fewer conversions? Does it mean that your banner placement is wrong, or does it mean that you’re not effectively reaching the audience that is best for the product you are marketing.

I would, however, not necessarily encourage anyone to start making changes too quickly, as another important aspect of this business is making connections for the longtail. In his article, Patrick says, “We are forgetting that brand preference is built on emotional connections.”

The goal for affiliate marketers who promote specific brands, is to create a connection between players and the brand they are promoting, so that even if that visit to the site does not immediately convert into a deposit, it may eventually do so. But the goal here, is to get them to convert on your site, not someone else’s who is promoting the same brand.

The challenge then, is for the affiliate site to become the brand that players trust. Regardless of the casino, poker, or bingo site you are promoting, there needs to be a combined trust built into the mind of the player before they will give up their hard-earned money. As much as you are selling the product, you are also selling yourself.

Do you find the way to do this in the results of your analytics, or does it come about as a result of the creative process? There’s no easy answer, but it’s evident that both of these factors should be taken into consideration. But if you use your analytics in conjunction with the creative process, you will find out what works best.

The goal will always be to convert as many impressions as possible into deposits. So, as I’ve said before, don’t be afraid to get creative and find new ways to get those conversions. The great part about working online is that we can change our strategies quickly and easily, and even run several tests at the same time to find the one that works best. Don’t let the metrics kill your creativity; instead, let them bring out the best in your creative process.

Cheltenham (like other major sports betting events) attracts a huge amount of press, and as such also attracts a huge number of rookie punters.  At the same time, it can also be assumed that it will attract a high level of participation from veteran punters, who will likely place more bets, and in higher amounts, then during the rest of the season.  These two opportunities, while both excellent for affiliates, present a bit of a dilemma, as these types of players are very different, and must be approached uniquely if you are to achieve the highest revenue performance from this big event. In this article, we look at the pros and cons of each type of punter, and how to cater to each.

Rookie Punters

Pros:
*No established player accounts > No need to worry about them already having an account, and thus not being tagged to your affiliate account.
*More likely to lose money > More money for you as an affiliate.
*Easier to rank for the terms they enter (more on this below)

Cons:
*Low player value > More likely to bet once and never return.
*Needs more “convincing” (more on this below)

Rookie punters are, more or less, the life blood of the industry. While everyone likes to dream about that single high roller player who earns you $10,000 a month, the reality is that, more often than not, high roller players are not profitable. If they WERE losing more than they were winning, they probably would not be betting $10,000 a month. In reality, as experience goes up, profit margins go down, so bookies need to keep those new players coming in to stay in the black.

So how do you tweak your site to get more rookie punters?

The first thing to realize is that they are not searching for the same terms as veteran punters. Terms like “Freebet”  and “odds comparison” probably haven’t entered their vocabulary yet. Instead, they’re more likely to be event enthusiasts, searching for information about the event. This means they will be searching for a wider range of long tail keywords, as well as things like “betting guide” “bookie review” and “tips”. This is a good thing, as you’ve got a much better shot for ranking for some long tail keywords with a few good articles about the event than you do ranking for freebet, odds comparison or the like.

Now that you’ve got them on your site, you need to give them info. The more info you can give them to make them feel confident about their choice, the more likely they are to convert. It doesn’t hurt to throw an appealing freebet or other promo offer into the mix either, but make sure that you don’t overly focus on the promo and forget to give the in depth analysis the player is looking for to feel confident.

Finally, focus on big brands. With new punters, a brand like Victor Chandler or Ladbrokes Affiliates in the UK, or Centrebet or Canbet Affiliates (in AUS) are much more likely to instill trust in the punter than a lesser-known, mid-tier brand.

Most of all, Remember that once you’ve got the players landing on your page, your work is not done. Put extra effort into building out your content and really selling the tip (and the bookie), and you will definitely see the results.

Veteran Punters

Pros:
*No nonsense – No need to “sell” the betting tip or the bookie.
*Long-term players > If they like the bookie, they will stay and play.
*”High rollers” > These guys spend big, and when they lose, that means $$$ for you.

Cons:
*More likely to already have an account with the big bookies
*More likely to win.
*Harder to rank for the terms they enter (more on this below)

Veteran punters are pretty much the opposite of rookie punters. They want less fluff, and more of the key info, made available quickly. They’re more likely to know exactly what they are looking for, and bounce from your site if they don’t find it.

And what are they looking for? That depends.

Some are just looking for more freebets or other  promotions. Some are looking for odds comparison, to find the best rate on the event. Others are looking for specific insider info, or to read insight from well-known authorities on the event. On these last point, a word of caution: Don’t try to fake being an expert tipster. Veteran punters can sniff out BS and will bounce from your site if they feel like it’s a sham. If you really are a good enough tipster to keep the veterans interested, then you probably don’t want to be giving these punters tips, because you’ll make no money from them.

If you’re going after the vets, keep your site tight. Clean, clear evaluations of the brands, the promo offer, and the odds on the event in question, so your visitors can read through quickly, make an informed decision, and get going. Try focusing on the advantages of a lesser known brand (but only if they are REAL advantages), as the vets are less brand sensitive, and as mentioned in the pros and cons, more likely to already have accounts with the top ranked bookies.

No matter which type of punter you go after, remember to put yourself in their shoes, and remember that the better you know your market, and cater to their specific needs, the better your conversion rates, and long term revenues, will be.
