It's only been about a year since her debut album Crazy For You was released, and two years since her lo-fi, sun drenched and fuzzed out tracks started permeating into ears. By the blog watch, two years seems like a lifetime; but in terms of palpable success, Cosentino has been using those last two years to steadily climb not only the charts and away from the cat obsessed stoner public image that she herself had built during that time, but also into more rarefied circles of fame and fortune.

It was just the other day that she was rubbing shoulders with Tina Fey and being asked by Tracy Morgan to sing 'Respect' with him. She had a video directed by Drew Barrymore featuring a host of young stars including Chloe Moretz and Donald Glover, and in the witheringly backhanded compliment, has been a notorious target for HipsterRunoff's personal brand of caustic and ironic wit.

On second look, maybe she is in fact, deeper than just cats and weed. In fact, I might be inclined to think that, on one hand, she takes herself very seriously. And on the other, not seriously at all. Perhaps it's more that she takes her position in pop culture seriously, but herself not so much - though perhaps a little more with each HRO post. Cosentino seems cautious in her responses, and at times even defensive. She's frank though, and even speaks at length to explain her intentions and actions.

Tuesday March 6 2012:

We first interviewed Bethany back in September 2010. I did this interview with Cosentino about a year later in October 2011. With the recent buzz surrounding her new range for Urban Outfitters dropping into stores in May 2012, it seemed an appropriate time to let y'all read the unedited conversation. This cat-and-weed-meme-indie girl with the songs about the everyday tragedy of heartbreak and love set to warm and fuzzy guitar has proven far more than a blip on the radar and doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. To be honest, I prefer Best Coast less when she's talking and more when she's singing. Less meme and more music, I say - and it seems, so does she.

INTERVIEW AFTER THE HUMP >>

› Read the rest of this entry noreply@imyouare.com (Christel Escosa) Mon, 05 Mar 2012 13:49:00 +0300 http://imyouare.com/1390/Interview_--_BEST_COAST_2 Gratuitous Burger Post http://imyouare.com/1393/Gratuitous_Burger_Post

» gallery
noreply@imyouare.com (Christel Escosa) Fri, 24 Feb 2012 03:46:00 +0300 http://imyouare.com/1393/Gratuitous_Burger_Post Interview // The Rapture http://imyouare.com/1391/Interview_--_The_Rapture
All images and media via Popload

'How Deep Is Your Love' is a song title claimed by multiple bands. Most recently, The Rapture took it for the lead single from their latest album In The Grace Of Your Love. Its a fun fact to note that self-proclaimed bad boys of late 90s R&B, Dru Hill (which also happens to be a park in Baltimore that the band are named after) also lay ownership to the song title. "Sisqó and I are from the same state," Gabriel Andruzzi, the band's multi-instrumentalist (and the best goddamn cow-bell dinger I've ever seen) announces. "And actually, I was at dinner next to Dru Hill two nights ago."

Last night they played the newest shiniest jewel in São Paulo's venues, Cine Joia. And now seems the perfect time to share the interview we did with Gabe, where he shares his thoughts on Sisqó, frustration surrounding the bands evolution and what he's going to do about being scared shitless to be one of those ageing rocker bros.

Since the unexpected announcement of the release of another album, it's been well documented that The Rapture have spent the past few years getting through and getting over lots of stuff. Births, deaths, break-ups, make-ups and finally, an album produced by Philippe Zdar that deals with it all. 'It all' being any number of the hurts and resentments that happened which in turn, enabled the band to find some redemption and acceptance enough to make an album themed with that very process. It's been greeted critically with mixed reviews, but regardless of what people think, the boys are happy with the record. And so they should be.

Interview after the jump ----->>>

› Read the rest of this entry noreply@imyouare.com (Christel Escosa) Thu, 26 Jan 2012 17:38:00 +0300 http://imyouare.com/1391/Interview_--_The_Rapture MTV CK ONE Brazil // ft Sky Ferreira http://imyouare.com/1389/MTV_CK_ONE_Brazil_--_ft_Sky_Ferreira

There was plenty going on in São Paulo last Tuesday night, amongst which was MTV's CK One Party, featuring none other than CK One poster girl, Sky Ferreira. Open bar aside, I was curious to see Sky in real life. Because even with her fame/notoriety and papp-ability, her music career never really quite happened. Considering her myspace/Michael Jackson hype, her epic record deal signing and the truckloads of money that was thrown at her (and subsequently, squandered by her), the fruits of her talent have yet to appear. Unless you call an oversexualised, over-hyped and eventual flop of a video that looks more like a make-up advertorial, a fruit.

One by Sky Ferreira

Not that a million plus views are anything to be sniffed at; but when at least that much was spent making an album that was never released, the value of it has to be questioned. And not saying either, that Sky isn't a hard worker (I have no idea whether she is or not), or that any of it is her fault.

I'm Just Saying.

Anyway, so the music didn't quite happen for Sky; but fashion on the other hand, has always loved her. And girl sure can work a camera angle, as is evidenced with her burgeoning career as a model allowing her to showcase her music somewhat. But in spite of all that: Sky Ferreira can actually sing. And I was curious to see her in the flesh.

With MTV's gorgeous Gaía Passarelli and DJ duo Database on the decks, as well as Brazil's own Copacabana Club in support, Sky came onstage superbly late. She looked more than a little dead-eyed, though with freshly straightened and possibly touched up roots. She did a few unmemorable songs with an acoustic guitar played by her boyfriend (so I was told) before singing to a backing track a number of songs including the very CK appropriate, 'One'. But she could definitely carry a tune. And work a diva hand. What more does a pretty girl need?

Here are some pics of the sets, first up with Copacabana Club, then Sky:

» gallery
noreply@imyouare.com (Christel Escosa) Thu, 24 Nov 2011 15:22:00 +0300 http://imyouare.com/1389/MTV_CK_ONE_Brazil_--_ft_Sky_Ferreira Diplo gets his Vogue on http://imyouare.com/1388/Diplo_gets_his_Vogue_on

HIYA // Wes and MikeQ

So aside from the terribly old news of his contribution to taking the third world to the first, Diplo is now trés mode with such first world accoutrements as GQ and Vanity Fair (though it pains me somewhat to identify him as 'that 'Paperplanes' dude – guys, for me, that was a totally mediocre tune. Go listen to some of his less lamestreamed stuff). In fact, he's actually a columnist at the latter. Diplo's latest column exploits a night out at Vogue Knights Tuesdays – and I don't mean the rival magazine kind.

I'm kinda fuming – just a little – out of jealousy, here. A Vogue Ball/Night was one thing I really had trouble trying to get a hold of last time I was in NY. Like most people who see the film, ever since I encountered Paris Is Burning, the Vogue Ball scene and culture has held great fascination for me. Earlier this year, I met father of the House of Ninja, Benny Ninja, survivor of the legendary Willi Ninja when he hit the runway in Sydney for Australian Fashion Week (I squealed when he glided out) and that only fueled my desire to get my Cindarella on and be at a damn ball.

Anyway Diplo, despite his modest claims of not knowing a lot about being black/gay/cool, having gleaned all his knowledge of that particular Bermuda from DJ MikeQ and Maluca, was the white/straight/'uncool' guy, perfect to go to a vogue ball in Manhattan a little while ago. Documented by Vanity Fair contributor Shane McCauley, Diplo takes us through his Knight on a Vogue Tuesdays (though unfortunately, the exact location and club isn't disclosed, except that it's right next to the Comfort Inn somewhere in Midtown, amongst a bunch of emtpy warehouses. Respect though, it'd not only get shit if that littled secret got outed online at Vanity Fair, but it'd probably have already moved on anyway by the time anyone hauled ass over there).

Check some of Shane McCauley's pics from the story below and in the gallery, but head over to Vanity Fair for Diplo's full commentary (or full MikeQ plug, as it were, scene aggregator extraordinaire that he is). And incidentally, I caught the producer's name at the credits, and it turns out that a friend I'd thought was lost in the wilds of Japan was responsible! Hey you, Corvin Dhali! It's just a shame that they haven't ever quite gotten the attention they really deserve. We were so excited when a new EP dropped last December with an impressive couple of tracks including the excellent 'Slippery Slope'. I've been listening to a version of their newest LP, now entitled Both Ways Open Jaws, since at least the very start of this year; and here it is finally getting it's full international release starting in Continental Europe on the 28th of October, with Australia, the UK and the US following on November 11th, 14th and 15th accordingly.

And it's a beautiful album. The thing is, a lot of bands only have a certain window in which to release music in - after all, you need to be on the wave to be able to ride it. But with some acts, even if it takes them ages to release an album they wrote seemingly forever ago, the time passing doesn't take anything away from how good their actual music is (plus Olivia and Dan are like, total babes).

To catch you up on our lack of keeping you up; here's 'Slippery Slope', the awesome first single off of Both Ways Open Jaws, in it's hypnotic, tribal-folk and addictively odd glory (the video for which we posted last year):

- [mp3]

From 'Slippery Slope', The Dø change their tune and show their range in the second track, 'Too Insistent'. The melody, sung by Olivia's aching, childlike vocals, tug at strings you never knew you had, whilst Dan's production is intimately close yet somehow expansive; sweetly warm and jangling in perfect accompaniment to Olivia's voice. But not mystery in that annoyingly contrived, inaccessible, or aloof kind of way; just in a quietly-going-about-business, but-listen-here kind of way. Now Paul Dixon's discreet labour has come to fruition, with the debut album for David's Lyre due for release on the 24th of October. It's called Hidden Ground, which is also the title of it's lead single.

I've been sitting on this track around, so whilst I'm at it, here it is:

- [mp3]

Whilst initially not as definitive as previous offering 'In Arms', 'Hidden Ground' takes a couple of listens to reveal how compelling a track it is, with it's double kicking beat, full of odd percussion, indeterminate whirring, molten guitars and pianos echoing out as if from the bottom of some deep cave. According to Dixon:

"Having spent the best part of the last 6 months in studios with no natural light I have emerged out the other side alive, with album in hand - albeit with sore eyes.

I am writing to proudly announce the free single 'Hidden Ground', a taster of my forthcoming debut album.

It has taken a while to get here, but really it's just the beginning. Simple. And strangely, leaves the eyes relaxed enough to actually just listen to the lyrics and the melody. A video clip that truly supports the song instead of distracting from it, or trying to make it better. Probably because the song is excellent in the first place, and doesn't need visuals to be fully appreciated or understood.

Admittedly, amongst all the things I've starred, bookmarked and dog-eared lately to check out/watch/listen to/read at some infinitely 'later date'; even though I'm STILL late on it, this clip is the first thing that I haven't procrastinated on and just watched. And I'm glad I did. It's a kind of David Attenborough observation of the habits of what I presume are some kind of deer. The band walk through the fields and forest in a joyful sort of manner, and that's it. It's kinda like Christmas; every year people seem to get the decorations out earlier and earlier. And I'm not sure I really *get* Halloween. I mean, I get it. But I guess I'm just not that into it, even though my birthday falls around the same weekend. Every year.

Of course I party down hard with the scariest zombies, spookiest ghouls and skankiest witches out on the night, but I don't need no Halloween excuse for that shit. It also wasn't a huge event growing up in Australia, though I was obviously aware of those eternal American pop culture references that Australian culture in so many ways soaks itself in (some of you may be surprised that Australia is way more American than it is English, despite being a colony).

Anyway, Halloween and it's shenanigans are approaching. Amongst the many parties that will be happening in various places, there's one that East London fashwan party fixtures The Broken Hearts will be DJing at alongside Queen of the Catsuit, Pam Hogg (and it'll be hosted by Ronnie Joice).

The Broken Hearts have made a cute little mix in anticipation of the event. They call it 'Circus Is Gone', I call it 'Changes'.''

- [mp3]

If you haven't already, check the interview we did with Twin Shadow this time last year HERE.
noreply@imyouare.com (Christel Escosa) Tue, 20 Sep 2011 18:53:00 +0300 http://imyouare.com/1374/Twin_Shadows_Changes Honey Bunny http://imyouare.com/1376/Honey_Bunny

The lyrics that Girls' Chris Owens sings in 'Honey Bunny' tell the story that despite seeming like he doesn't give a fuck, he does. In particular, he fronts about not giving a fuck about girls who don't seem to give a fuck about him. But actually, he DOES in fact, give a fuck, and wants a girl like his mum who loved him and told him that everything was gonna be alright.

According to the lyrics, them girls who he messed around with didn't like his bony body or dirty hair. In the 'Honey Bunny' vid, directed by Ivan Shumaker and the other half of Girls, Chet JR White, Chris' bony body is rocking a velvet midriff bearing top and tight black jeans, and his dirty hair looks great in a bob. You know why? Because his look is accessorized with that attitude. And that car (I don't have much of an idea about cars, and I find that car decidedly uncool - is it a Corvette? - despite it's obvious 'hot car-ness').

Girls look kinda like, happy in this vid. Healthy, even. And the video feels pretty real; unpretentious, smile inducingly awkward, a bit cheesy in parts, sure, but refreshingly real (probably because that's actually Chris' girlfriend, Hannah, in the Corvette with him). Entitled 'Thankless Thing'; a track that was recorded with long time collaborator and producer, Richard Formby at the start of the Smother sessions.

If you, like me, have been collecting all the B-sides from the previous singles off Smother, the single will be available on the 14th of November via digital download and on limited edition coloured 12” vinyl, together with all the b-sides. You can pre-order it HERE.

But back to this new b-side. 'Thankless Thing' is another beautiful track, loaded with everything I've come to know about Wild Beasts. Simultaneously sensual and spiritual, tender and unforgiving, 'Thankless Thing' is a lovely thing.

- [mp3]

noreply@imyouare.com (Christel Escosa) Tue, 20 Sep 2011 14:09:00 +0300 http://imyouare.com/1375/Thankless_Thing
